Oh question, I've been very vague with the backstory but Fred's around 8 when the fall started. Was I right to assume that the family was taken in almost immediately to the bunker to rebuild the community and didn't have to go through the hardships outside the bunker?

Yes, that's correct! They may have spent a few days to a week outside but would have been rounded up as fast as possible after that.
