Before the Worst

"Of course...don't you see the way I look at you?" Evan slurred. He brushed his head acrpss the curve of Darren's neck and trailed kisses, like he'd always wanted to do.

Darren was lost for words, blushing under Evan's touch. He knew he should probably move away, that he shouldn't let Evan touch him like this, but he couldn't. Instead, he tilted his head to the side, giving the boy better access to his neck, shivering as it sent chills down his spine.

Evan pulled back and smiled, his eyes hooded and low. "Darry...may I kiss you?" He asked, feeling his heart twist a bit. The magic of the booze was at full effect and Ev was completely curled up on Darren like a delicate rose vibe on a brick wall. "Please?" he begged as the vocals of Amy Lee pierced through the crowd.

Darren opened his mouth to reject the offer, but then thought of how Evan would feel if he did that. He bit his lip, thinking it over. It's not like it was serious...it's just one kiss, and that's all, he convinced himself. They probably wouldn't even remember it in the morning. He looked at the ground, then back at Evan, before nodding slowly.

Evan leaned forward and as he wrapped his arms around Darren's neck, he kissed his friend as softly and tenderly as he could. It wasn't anything like what he'd dreamed of--it was better in every possible way. Evan opened his moth a bit and let his tongue slide across Darren's bottom lip. The feeling was electric and he never wanted it to stop.

The moment Ev's lips touched his, something changed. Drastically.

It was if something had flicked a switch inside him, opening an entire chest full of unexplored feelings. Then...there was the power. As he complied, letting Evan deepen the kiss, he could feel some strange energy that was in sync with his own. It drew him in, and his hands went to rest lightly on the other boy's hips. Never before had he felt anything like this, and Darren

opened his eyes to stare at Evan, at the beauty he'd been oblivious to beforehand.

The feeling sobered him completely, rumbling from deep within his core. The glorious white wings behind him flared out into a grander set of flames. More he thought as he pulled the kiss deeper, radiating the force outward. He could hear and feel everyone around him. It was amazing and he loved the feel, the power. 'I've always wanted this.' he thought, bring the embrace closer.

Darren had half expected his wolf to reject the situation, but it was completely opposite to his predictions. It amplified the feelings within him, his blue eyes slowly changing to a glowing silver as he pressed closer to Evan, a low possessive growl sounding deep in his chest as he moved the other boy backwards.

"Mine." Was all Evan growled, his physical appearance changing drastically. The power burned within him, making his black hair lighten into a deep red color. His eyes first glowed a deep green before glowing a blinding white. His white panted darkened into a blood red, almost as if on his own accord. Not yet a woman's voice echoed in his head, and as quickly as it came, the power faded. A now exhausted Evan passed out within Darren's arms.

Darren cradled Evan close to his chest, pushing past several drunken patrons as he headed for the exit. His body was literally sparking, and his eyes had yet to return to their normal color. That, however, wasn't what he was worried about as he walked through the parking lot towards the car. No, what worried-and endlessly confused him was watching Evan transform into-well he wasn't really sure what the whole thing was. He walked to the passenger side, strapping Him in before going around and sitting in his own seat. He started the car, and pulled out onto the main road.

He pushed the thoughts out of his mind, knowing full well that if he wanted to get back safely he couldn't think about whatever just happened in there for too long.

When they reached the mansion again, he pulled into a spot and released the wheel only to find that it was melted where his hands were. "Dammit," he muttered, trying to figure out why his powers were acting all crazy. Careful not to shock Evan, Darren pulled him out of the car and took him into the mansion, making the least amount of noise possible.

Evan woke up with a start. He was in his own bedroom, with a pounding headache. "So this is a hang over." he groaned, pulling the covers off his body. He walked over to the bathroom and began his morning routine, showering and brushing his teeth.

As he stepped out and looked at the mirror, he thought he was seeing things for a second. When the realization hit him that the image was him, he freaked.

'What the hell?!' He yelled in his own head, it sounding louder and more forceful that usual. He heard and felt people flinch at his exclamation, causing him to fall backwards.

"What's going on?! Darren! SOMEBODY HELP ME!" he screamed, curling up in the fetal position.

Darren clutched his head as someone yelled in his mind, effectively waking him up and causing him to fall on the floor. Groaning, hi picked himself up off the carpet before hearing Evan screaming from across the hall. He immediately went for the door, pulling it open before jogging down the hall a bit to his friend's room, twisting the handle to reveal the boy that was curled up on the floor. He knelt down next to Evan, shaking his shoulder firmly. "Ev? Ev I'm here, OK?" He figured Even had just seen himself in the mirror - and he guessed that he himself would have reacted the same way...Darren was still utterly confused about what had happened to Evan.

Evan whimpered, feeling Darren next to him. The voices were loud and he knew all of them. Logan was talking to Storm about the events where they were pitted against the Avengers. Anna was worried about te events of last night. Darren...he was concerned about why Ev was curled up, screaming. He couldn't block it all out. It was all personal, qn invasion of both their privacy and his.

He wanted to puke, he wanted to shut everything up. Evan was scared, not knowing why everything was all wrong now. Hadn't he finally gotten what he wanted?

'Bring him to me.' A familiar, comforting tone rattled loud in his mind. He knew it to be the Professor. Evan groaned, not being able to stand or even move for that matter. "Help." he whispered to his friend, grimacing in pain.

Darren nodded instinctively, even though he knew the Professor couldn't see him. "Shh..." He gently slipped his arms around Evan, lifting him up slowly, careful not to jerk in his movements. "It's gonna be alright, just hang in there. You'll be fine," he reassured him, moving out of the bedroom and towards the elevators, pressing the button to take them to the first floor. His powers still weren't back to normal, and people moved out of his way as the blue sparks jumped around him when he continued to the Headmaster's office. Evan didn't seem to be affected by it somehow, and he supposed that was a good thing. He knocked on the door, and stepped inside when he was asked.

Evan groaned and turned over in Darren's arms. "They're so loud." he mumbled, dazing in and out as they moved down the hall. He felt a strange, electric sensation as Darren held him tighter to his chest.

"I don't know...what's happening to him..." Darren was trying to stay calm as the Professor inspected his friend. It did nothing to calm his nerves when he noticed the man getting more and more perplexed by the minute. What could be so strange that even Charles Xavier would be surprised by it...and why could he still feel someone digging around in his mind?

"It's started." The Professor wheeled his chair over to the two. "Something he was born to take control of his taking over his body. I think you know of the legacy that follows his name. I see more abd more of Jean in him, everyday."

"Wha - you mean Jean Grey? As in, the Phoenix?!" This was too much for Darren to take all in one moment. First, he'd let Ev kiss him-then liked it , witnessed his best friends entire physical body change and nearly burn down a building, and now he was being told that Evan was posessed by his uncle's not-so-dead girlfriend.

His face went white, and he felt a bit lightheaded. "So, what, he's a telepath now? And why are his powers, affecting mine?"

"I always feared he was a telepath. The fain murmuring in his head was a tell-tale sign I chose to ignore. And, with the energy signal given off this morning, we can label him Omega. Just think of the possibilities if he were to open his mind and hone that skill..." the Professor stroked his chin. "And you say the Lobos spirit reacted with the Phoenix? They are both forces of balance, good and evil--life and.death. Whatever it is about you two, I encourage you continue. Evan's sanity is now on the line. If he goes Dark like Jean did..." Charles trailed off, remembering the pure destruction at the hnds of his best student. "You guard him with your very life."

"I will," he replied, the words coming to him automatically. An Omega...no wonder he'd felt so protective of the other boy. Their friendship probably just intensified the bond. Then there was something else, some other reason why his wolf was so infatuated with Evan himself... Darren shook HS head at the thought of what his wolf was implying. No. No, that's not possible.

He left the office, bringing Evan back to his room, and setting him on the bed gently. "Ev..." He started, then stopped, realizing he had no idea what to say.

Evan groaned, slowly sitting up in the bed. As his eyesight adjusted, he squinted at Darren. He heard the boy thinking of things to say. A flash of the night before revealed the kiss that almost burned a building down. "Suddenly, I'm a telepath..." he grumbled, trying to mke sense of everything.

"The barriers I tried placing would not take..." Charles said to Logan as they sat in his office, contemplating the situation. "I have a feeling that this was it coincidence that he was giben her last name. It's been 7 years, Logan. Why is she trying to make contact now?" The man asked, lost in the pensiveness of his own mind.

Darren blinked. "Congratulations...?" He said, offering the boy a smile. As strange as Evan's new powers were, they gave Darren a reason to avoid the...thing...that happened between them the night before. "Feeling OK Ev?" He asked, tilting his head to the side.

---

"Dunno, Chuck," Logan responded, rubbing his jaw thoughtfully. "But the kid's not ready to take on all that power - hell he didn't even know he was a mutant before a few hours ago. Jean better know what she's doing."

"Not at all. I feel like a iron nail has been driven into my skull. And, I can hear you avoiding that kiss. Way to go, DC." Evan said, with an eyebrow raised. "I'm sorry....for all this."

Darren winced, completely forgetting his friend was telepathic now. Should have paid attention in class where they'd learned how to hide their thoughts from others...cause now it was all out in the open.

"I kinda hoped you wouldn't remember that..." He said, looking at his hands. "No need to be sorry OK? It was my fault, cause If I hadn't let you, none of this would have even happened!" He realized, scowling at the sheets. He hoped the other boy could read his mind well enough to sort through it all - because Darren couldn't even tell what he himself was feeling at the moment, and he wasn't sure he even wanted to know.
