Nation Building BeckonCall's Fantasy Nation-building RPG thread

We never found out what happened to the creepy guy from the Muurdan empire who hitched a ride in the jewelry. I imagine he is still in a hold on that abandoned ship? He will add a whole different element, we sort of been like the kids from Lord of the Flies thus far. It will be like when the school teachers find us.

Actually I think a very big hint was dropped that the Fetch did in fact survive the trip, and he's currently living inside the reinforced building in the square.

"It" I should say, actually. And the post I'm referencing is when Cassandra was walking through the Platz by order of Caellis and noticed all the weird magical things happening at once.

Interesting, I have to work on my reader comprehension skills. I must have overlooked this. I envisioned he was on the Island. Why would he have locked himself up? Is he not supposed to be guiding us?

I need to go back and read posts. You seem to have read very carefully, and I commend you on that.

Well there's no definitive details, but the description mentions a figure in the windows of the building that seemed to warp light around it (indicative of extraplanar beings), and that it had two glowing eyes of blood and wind. Those were the two tears of divinity that the Corvus took with them before they left Port Cestus, so to me the pieces fit.

So uh... I miiight have gone back into my old notes and drudged up a bunch of things that I've loosely researched for my own projects. Felt like sharing the love here in one big push, see what comes of it. Hopefully this doesn't distract Beck too much. :\

Inuit myth of the Qalupalik

A type of armor you're probably familiar with, but you might not know that Inuit people also had something similar in their culture. (Scroll to their section)

No, this is not a joke. These men are fighting with long, thin pieces of steel which are, for all intents and purposes, whip swords. Highly dangerous and takes decades to learn how to use them without injuring yourself in the process.

I can't find any references for this, but I think I got this from a documentary about ancient warfare. Apparently the ancient Egyptians would seed caches of supplies out in the desert for when they took their armies on campaign.

Another thing I can't seem to find any reference for, but I took notes on it so I got some good details. In ancient days there were some common practices that were imposed on conquered nations by their new conquerors. Obviously things changed and each ruler had their own flavor, but these were pretty standard actions to be used against your new vassal country.

1. The conquered leaders must swear fealty to their new rulers.

2. The conquered leaders must pay appropriate taxes to their new rulers.

3. The children of the conquered leaders (often all the boys and some of the girls) would be taken as captive vassals to live in the capital of their new rulers.

Obviously the last one is the most interesting and unique out of the three, but it makes perfect sense. If you have your enemy's children held captive then your new vassal country will be far less likely to rebel.

Ancient peoples were actually very concerned with records, far more than we gave them credit for. The Palermo Stone gives us records from ancient Egypt that describe festivals, taxation, sculpture, buildings, warfare, and even specific measurements of the height of the Nile during the year.

For those that want to get into the legitimate history of magic and alchemy, a good starting point is the Three Philosophical Principles.

Again something that I can't find any reference for. But I do recall from a National Geographic (or maybe Discovery Channel) documentary that small packs of wolves will actually echo their howls off nearby trees to trick prey into thinking there's more wolves than are actually there. Natural mental warfare!

This one doesn't really need a reference because it's something like common knowledge. Whenever gold miners go out prospecting they look for quartz deposits since quartz and gold often form in similar regions and climates.

Float Copper: Copper that is found 'free floating' in soft earth or some other easily mined substance such as ice. Also describes copper deposits that have been exposed to the air from erosion or other natural forces.

One little thing concerning horse nature. If the rancher wants the mare to go somewhere she doesn't want to go they'll often grab the foal instead. The mare will usually follow her foal wherever it goes, despite her own reservations. Stallions on the other hand are always unpredictable bastards. :P

Just before the weekend is over! Now I have to read this before I hit the sack for tonight. Many thanks Beck! :)

The Island Caper (up to the first decision point) has been posted -- hopefully if that is responded to in a timely fashion the entire caper can be neatly tied up (or at least considered complete -- heh-heh)

I'm back in my groove and will be posting the carry-forward for the Mud-Elf Pursuit/ambush -- going to break and eat and get back to that. If those short-term capers get tied up there should be nothing stopping us from picking up some serious speed with all players...

If you made some decisions, even just PMing me what you wanted to do in short-form, it would advance things considerably. @KamiKahzy

It's my hope to wrap up pursuit/island (or come close enough) to open up the passage of time more to the rest of the players.

I'm already thinking about refining/streamlining stuff like this so that momentum can be maintained. Thanks for Playing on, everyone!

I'm actually doing pretty good, to answer your question. I'm working out the Island Rescue with Beck and things are going as well as I can hope them to be right now. We're nearly done with it so you should see a post with the results in a few days. Some interesting developments I must say!

We can negotiate what you want to accomplish in Pm, @Prince Vaethorion ... As long as your orders are not so daunting they big down the game, we may handle more for you. The island caper is pretty settled, and Kami and/or I will post it soon.

After that the pursuit is resolved, and I'm glad we took a little extra time before resolving it... Turned out more interesting than I thought, at least for me.

After that (very soon I hope) there will be fitting song and fanfare for the end of spring! (SEASON ONE!) -- summer may be a time of broader strokes, more development, and time passing fast enough to see how momentum in the spring bears fruit.

As always, thanks for patience and investment. We have only begun to fight!

Island caper is pretty much in the can, @KamiKahzy has said he'd write it up from our PMs so I could settle to the business with Aymarans and Highborn. If necessary I can make slight adjustments or inclusions (ie: the reactions of the highborn to events)... but I'm hoping Kami gets that up before or around the time I get the pursuit tied up.

Then... More fun and intrigue ahead!!!

I'd like to apologize for taking up most of Beck's time with the Island Caper. I think things were running smoothly for most of it, but I did take up a large chunk of his time with the back and forth. I'll try not to monopolize the GM in the future, I promise.

It's all good. It takes time to on ramp a faction and this is your debut. I am looking forward to seeing how the different factions intermingle with each other.

If anyone cares to look, I added a pretty long overview of the Eastern High Elves on the overview page including information about the Eastern High Elven kingdom, , it's military, some history and the Prince's family. I even put accordion spoilers which initially simple, but then I had screwed up and it took me an hour to fix. I had written this before I was introduced (which delayed my introduction and was completely unnecessary). Beck was like, um that's great, but not what I asked for. I was like, oh, well I wanted to have a feel for the faction. I decided I might as well post it now that I put the accordion thing. Perhaps later I will modify the entire page so it's neater.

I took from all High Elven lore, but admittedly (obviously) took a lot from War Hammer and made some of my own embellishments. The art is from War Hammer because I cannot draw to save my life and that genre has the best art for High Elves.
