Nation Building BeckonCall's Fantasy Nation-building RPG thread

Welcome Rat people! You will find the other races quite interesting and some very hungry.

Btw. Would a were-rat turn a rat into a human? j/k

Actually it would turn them into an even bigger were-rat than you would ever think possible. Bigger than the damn Aymaran's by comparison.

At least it does in my head. Whether or not that's how it works in this particular setting is up to our glorious overlord. IMEANGMWHAT?

@Beckoncall @Prince Vaethorion

Beck, should I wait for your response to this first or should I just respond to the elves on my own? I ask because I'm not entirely sure they'd be able to hear each other just yet, I never specified just how far from shore the vessel was going to loiter. I assumed it'd be a reasonably long distance, but I'll leave that one up to you.

@Heyitsjiwon :

Where in the world is the 3rd Sundered King?

I was under the impression your brother was at the Harun'taran garisson... Am I wrong in that assumption? If he is not garrisoned there, I may work him into the battle... but I was pretty sure that was the case.

Ahh, I have 3 Sundered Kings, but Caelis is not a Sundered King (at least in terms of manpower that I bought). So far, only 2 of them are named. Lothar is Caelis' brother, the other one, who I can't remember right now, was the Sundered King that led the expedition into the ruins earlier. The 3rd one has yet to be named or do anything. Effectively, he's been loitering around the platz.

I guess we resolved that one on our own. I got a PM message indicating you sailed into harbor and that the sailors were visible. I might have jumped the gun about range, or perhaps it could be assumed that the High Elves were just posturing. In any case, initially it was not made clear to me that it was a new player (that's ooc, until I saw your post) and nor was it clear to the High Elves that it was colonist (that's rpg), but I think we navigated it well. The GM later gave me detailed background on the Rat-folk (I rolled for it), and I will likely incorporate it into the story line.

Interesting choice of races. I was concerned initially it was going to be heavy Muurdan sympathizing human dominant game, but it became the exact opposite!

Btw, It's unclear to me if the forces at the Harun'taran garrison are aware of the battle at the Platz? I thought I read a post implying such. How far of a hike is it to the platz from there? Do the High Elves there know the Platz is under attack? What are the Sylvan Elves doing and the Tyrren?

It's my impression that none of them know it's happening so it's business as usual over there with the sylvan and Tyren starting their housing project/merger. There's a trio of Tyren on the way to talk business but I believe beck said that if things carried on at this rate they'd get there too late to do anything big.

@Prince Vaethorion

Interesting turn of events indeed. Glad we navigated that little encounter as we did, but I'm also glad there was that tension in the first place. Makes things that much more believable in my opinion.

I am unsure of the distances from the Tyrren camp to the Platz? How far is it? To my knowledge High Born there have nothing more to say and do. My intentions for them were to go there was to help in the battle against the Gnolls, and attend the meeting of leaders which seemed to have ended awhile back. Presumably, after the meeting ended they headed back to the Platz. I admittedly am a bit confused about how much time has passed between the battle with the gnolls, the meeting and the current battle in the Platz. I realize it's an abstraction. If any considerable time has passed then I Imagine they headed back to the Platz as there is nothing for them to do there while the Sylvan Elves and Tyrren are building up what appears to be their own satellite settlement.

@Beckoncall is it possible to get a scale for the map or does that go against the grain of abstraction?

This was mentioned in the OOC and I don't remember clearly. But, walking from the Platz to the Tyren settlement takes up the better part of a day if my memories hold true.

I remember something along those lines while I was reading through all the posts. There was a LOT to get through btw. :\

@Heyitsjiwon : Got you on the mixup on the sundere kings numbers. You have 4 cavalry -- caelis, his brother, and two more.

The last and only recently accounted for Sundered King is Sir Bors... who sidles up to you and your other rider, late -- as he has been before, because he was "Comforting the local lady citizenry" -- as he has done before. You dismissed it as bawdy chatter by his squire that he has at least twelve women in his makeshift "Domain of Repose" in the depression... but now you can't be so sure -- it would figure if there was not already a den of ill-repute in the colony, One would rise up around Sir Bors. Sir Bors, and his steed to boot, are Larger than even the standard cavalryman. Sir Bors' general plumpness and cheery attitude are not to be perceived as weakness. He is a man of appetites, and while prone to over-drink, over-eat, or over-sleep -- he's saved Caelis' life more than once... and defended his honor twice that and half.

That said, he's kind of a jerk. Not a lot of people like him.

(consider that you have an additional rider at the battle-- though he stinks of perfume and his gloves are slick with walnut-cake.)

Both of these things are true.

@Prince Vaethorion (AND EVERYBODY ELSE)

I am intentionally keeping ranges and distances abstract for a variety of reasons, which I will elaborate on if pressed... but more than anything I don't want math and logistics and rules to get in the way of a good story. It takes a full cart of goods almost an entire day to get to Harun'Taran from Center-platz. The average soldier force-marching might take 8 hours to cover that distance. Elves can make that distance considerably faster if they are hurried and/or not laden with gear. (a wood elf might make the distance in approx. 3 hours, or even less!) Though the condition this elf might be in on arrival is questionable.

A road, trail or even a designated path would make the trip much faster -- as it is terrain as well as distance that is a factor. Shadowplains have some depressions and rises that make movement difficult (including the odd ridge here and there which would suck to go around)

Boulder field is well travelled, but it's full of friggin' rocks... not as much as before, but between the odd hill, chunks of masonry, and patches of rocky difficult ground travel is slowed.

Also, most non-military folk don't favor traveling shadowfields even if it's faster than boulder field... because there is fear of enemies across the river, and is generally in the shadow of those initially inviting but now forboding redwoods.

TAME THE LAND, build roads or otherwise make things predictable and safe and speed of travel between the two areas will shrink CONSIDERABLY.

As far as coming back from the garrisoning -- there was no universal decision that the border with the gnolls was safe -- recall your troops and they will go home. Temporally it hasn't been very long since the troops garrisoned and the start of the battle for 'Platz.

It was hinted before but a great horn, signal fire, or other means of alarm might help in conveying urgency over the terrain. The communities will doubtless become much closer as farmland pops up and with greater access to materials. (if there was free access to wood, some people might not even settle in the platz but build farmhouses, or example.)

Anyway, Battle is getting processed today. Thanks for patience, and I'm glad there's been other stuff going on.

I friggin' love you, man. If we all "mind the store" everything gets easier to remember. xD
I'm halfway tempted to go through the entire thread again and make up a timeline/glossary of events.

Don't tease, but every once in a while accounting is going to need to take place, or something ambiguous hashed out. Since I can't be here 24/7 -- stuff like this is a balm to my heart. Seriously. <3
