I'm happy to have silent checks. I've seen plenty of circumstances where requesting a check has had the player pull some meta-game chicannery:

DM: Uhhm, can I have some Perception rolls, everyone?

Rogue: Ah, fifteen

Wizard: Ten

Fighter: Urk, a five

Ranger: Cool, eighteen

DM: Okay, uhh, the air in the forest is cool and still this evening.

All: Preparing weapons....

DM: Why?

Captain Hesperus

In my tabletop game, I'll sometimes have the players roll dice just to make them paranoid. Its fun to watch them squirm.

Kaerri, thanks for the help, Danni, and group, sorry it's really hard for me to get used to how to use the forum's here. Not to mention I'm still trying to spool up to being a RPer again. I'm going to play the "strong silent type" for now, basically that means if I can't respond in a timely manner, Danni take it away. Now ya see why I'm a NCC (Non Combat Character). I could end up absent for a great while, or just not knowing how to use the forums. Now where the blazes is my character sheet... (Rummage rummage) No, that's a mech pilot, no, that's a nano-lord...

Re: dice rolling. I always roll dice for a purpose. And sometimes, I will ask the players to roll dice for a purpose. However, sometimes I tell them what it is for, and sometimes I don't.

I don't
want them knowing what the secret rolls are for. I just want the results so we can get on with the game.

The dice help me figure things out. Things that I don't want to fully come up with on my own. So I roll and see. It's worked pretty darned well for this long. Hah! =)

Re: Squirm. I know what you mean, Sherwood. I just don't have the heart to do it to my players. =)

Re: Back into RP-land for Killfire. No worries, bud! I want you to have a good time here. The rest of us sound like we've been RPing (at least semi-regularly) for years. Not you. You're coming back into role-playing after one hell of a hiatus. So, I'm willing to help you as much as I can (plus you're my friend and that's what friends do). I'll do this in Conversation (unless you want everyone's help?).

Re: Ventrilo. Last night, when Killfire and I were on the telephone, he offered his Ventrilo room to everyone here. It is not a busy channel (in fact, it's pretty quiet most of the time), and it's a great (free) place to jump in and talk if anyone wants or needs to. I have Killfire's information for anyone who would like it. Thanks, Killfire! =)

And finally... Re: Pecker. Pecker is alive and well and napping in Wolf's free arm (if Wolf so wishes) or in an empty corner (if Wolf has his hands free). Unlike Sparkle (whom we will get to in-game), Pecker wakes up "safely" with Wolf.

That said... I have a "funny" to share with everyone. =)

Last night, I was going to include Pecker in the post where Wolf and Powerpaw are meeting. It was late (for me) and I needed to go to bed, but that wasn't what stopped me. =) What stopped me was getting into Pecker's head (who at the time was "napping" in my mind). Now imagine this, if you please: Wolf and Powerpaw meet. And then suddenly Pecker wakes up in a dark and busy cage that smells like monster galore, indoors, with apparently no way out, and the first thing that fills the little fellows vision besides Wolf is big ol' warrior-cat Powerpaw? I'm grinning and thinking, "If you're a bird, and you get knocked out, only to wake up and see him, how in the heck would you feel?" =)

The only line that came into my mind involving Pecker last night was something like this. "Pecker wakes up, sees Powerpaw, and dies. After you rez him, he wakes up, sees the giant horned cat grinning at him, and dies again. You may be here for awhile..." And I couldn't write that! Ha ha!

A note on Powerpaw's most recent post (where he is replying to Wolf's question concerning his origins) - About an hour after I had written that, Powerpaw "told" me that his questions for Wolf would be different than the ones I wrote for him. So instead of Powerpaw asking Wolf to teach him bow skills (all rangers know how to shoot, don't they?), he asks his current questions instead.

This might happen in the future from time to time. If it does, I will edit the post as soon as I can with a note like this one, or if someone else has posted afterward, I will just leave it. I have long preferred to let my PCs and NPCs "tell" me what they want to do, instead of me telling them. But sometimes, I get it wrong.

Sorry for any confusion. Game on! =)

Would it be possible for the falcon to squeeze through the bars and thus escape? Maybe I could have him fetch the key.

There is the dagger-sized hole in the roof through which the moonlight shines through. Pecker can definitely fit through that.

@Sherwood I went through each of Luna's spells in her spellbook and came across no material components that appear to cost over a gold piece. That's one castin' and blastin' spellbook Luna owns! =)

All. May I have a Knowledge: Nature roll from any character with Druid levels, Ranger levels, or 5 or higher ranks in that skill, please?

I'm heading off to GenCon tomorrow, but I am going to bring my computer along with me so I will try to keep up on the posting in the evenings.

Have a blast, bud! Hope your dice are hot and you have a terrific time! =)

Cap. Your last post was really well done, bud! I loved how Otiorin felt about that "dead man talking" and the prayer he sent his way, plus there is good sense in his words regarding haste. Otiorin might not want to be a leader, but he seems to make one heck of an advisor! =)

Sherwood. Luna doesn't have the required 5 ranks in Knowledge: Nature. In fact (and I would have looked this up had I the time when I posted), I probably should have just found out who did have the requirements, and asked them alone to make the roll. Save everybody some time. On the other hand, you did just get rid of a roll of 3. And if you're going to roll low, that's not a bad place to roll it. =)

Wolf. Unfortunately, a number higher than 10 was required. Good try, though. =)

I will post again later tonight (instead of now) to give others a chance to post.

I must have looked at her Int bonus as her ranks instead of the two by accident. Sorry.

@Sherwood No worries! I goofed again too. Roll Spellcraft, please? Details below. =)

I was tired when Luna was making her Knowledge: Engineering check (result: 22), and I thought it was Luna casting a Force Missile somehow. Sorry! =) Luna's roll provides the following information. The wooden door's Hardness (6) and approximate hit points (35). Also, the bars reinforcing the door are made of solid steel, so while destroying the wooden door is possible, that still leaves the bars. Luna's check tells her the bars have Hardness (10) and hit points (20 per 6 foot section - destroying one will open a hole big enough for a medium creature, and destroying two will allow a large-sized creature through).

Furthermore, her Scorching Ray spell would likely damage it, but the
Fireball would be most effective (if everyone got to the opposite side of the room to avoid the blast). Plus, given Luna's gift (and experience, I will add) in fire magic, she would definitely know that all of the hay presents its own problem - lots and lots of smoke in a short time. However, between her Detect Magic spell, her levels in Wizard (I take this into account even if the book doesn't), her ranks in Spellcraft, and her roll in Knowledge: Engineering, Luna would realize that this door was custom-made to defy attempts of brute force of many kinds. And there does indeed appear to be a protective spell of some kind placed upon the door. Perhaps Luna can figure out what it is? Roll Spellcraft, please.

@killfire The floor is made from the same beautiful and obdurate wood that the wagon is made out of. Given Bronze's background and skills, he would know magically-treated, solid oak when he examined it. And by treated, I mean to say that Bilal bought things to last. This is some of the best wood one can buy for a wagon - the magical treatment makes it not nearly as heavy as normal oak, yet it retains its denseness and hardy nature and then some. The only way this wagon could have been made better is if a druid were involved... =) Either way, any of these wagons alone easily cost more coin than most villagers see in their lives. And that's not to mention the fine horses, crew, etc.

Sorry my latest posts are all so short and unremarkable. The game seems to be moving at a faster pace just when life slows me down, and at a slower pace when I've got nothing to do but post! Ironic *bark*

Wolf. No worries, oh dear candid canine; life is like that sometimes. I'm just glad you're having fun. =)

All. Wolf and Pecker have operated like this before and they make a great team, though sometimes some of you might have wished for the ability to ask Pecker yourselves what was going on, as Wolf and Sparkle are your only translators.

Also, Wolf does not have to roll for this information. I am taking into account he is a 6th-level Ranger who has been in the vicinity of Summerset long enough to basically know what's what in this part of the forest.

Thanks for the infodump.

But what can I do, or anyone else, until Otiorin uses that scroll to open the door? I miss something? :S

@Wolf Rawrrr Wolf can tell the rest of the team what's going on out there. He is the only one who knows what Pecker is saying. Everyone else is just hearing the combat outside with no idea as to who or what is causing it. =)

Or at your option, you can just say, "Wolf translates everything Pecker relays in these kinds of situations." What's your preference?

All. You may want to see the results of Otirion's use of the cudgel prior to reading this. =)

There are some items in my game that, while magical, require no special training to use. You might recall the Wand of Cat's Grace on the Starting Magical Items table? The last thing your Storyteller here wants is for only one or two persons in your team to be able to make use of an important item like the Cudgel of the Wayfarer (and heaven forbid, a one is rolled, or no one in your party rolled a person who chose Use Magical Device).

Were this a tabletop game (and how cool would that be, right? =) ), I would have asked Cap, in my own way, about the password. But this is the Internet, and I would enjoy this story sooner rather than later. =)

Oh. And I finally found a good picture for Stewart! He now has his own entry in Non-player Characters. =)
