I was going to ask that earlier, but assumed that the ST was already ahead of us. I'd be surprised if it weren't so ( ;) )

I wanted to roll and see if Wolf can remember the details for this particular type of wellspring (plus any other general info that might not have been included as public knowledge), but I don't know which Knowledge check that would fall under. Wolf may not be a druid, but as a ranger he'd have spent a fair amount of time in their company *woof*

Bren's going to roll for Monster Lore to see what he knows about minotaurs as a species. He knows a few in Highwind, but I don't think he's ever made a lore check on them.

Well then.( :D )

Nice roll. If it is to be known about the horny-heads, you know it!

@Wolf Rawrrr I am ahead (on that subject, anyway). Some pieces of information (like the existence and general purpose of wellsprings) I like to provide. Other questions (like the one you just asked), I wait to see if you ask on your own before I reward any additional details. =)

Please roll a Knowledge: Nature check here for Wolf. I am also allowing the same roll for any characters who have 5 ranks or more in Knowledge: Nature. Let's see what Wolf knows! =)

@Captain Hesperus Heya! Cap'n sez,

I'm willing to scout ahead, my Elf eyes are only slightly impaired by pitch darkness...
If you don't mind the correction, surface elves have low light vision (which is useless in pitch darkness). Low light vision must have a source of light of some kind (and effectively doubles the range of that source of light); Darkvision allows black-and-white sight up to 60 feet (on average) without any light whatsoever. Otiorin would know that elves of the Underdark (a.k.a. drow elves) possess this type of vision (at double normal range), but not low light vision.
@Kaerri Sounds like Bren pulled his Highwind Minotaur buddies aside and bought them some beers in exchange for information! What a roll! Bren knows just about everything there is to know about the Monster Lore side of minotaurs (both Bloodland and Highwind). Minotaurs do indeed have darkvision out to 60 feet (being cave dwellers at one point during their history). They do not have low light vision. Anyone else with Knowledge: Monster Lore may attempt this roll. Please add this species and result (natural 20!) to Bren's character sheet for future reference? =)

@Sherwood While Luna's thoughts on trap-dropping arcanists is generally correct, her knowledge in spellcraft (or personal experience or both) reminds her that the most common "trap-type" arcane spells (Alarm and Explosive Runes) can be cast in one standard action (as opposed to the pain-in-the-butt Fire Trap spell, that while useful, takes 30 whole minutes to drone out...).

Well, one cannot be stuck wondering what might be there, or you'll end up not doing anything and will be too late to do any good. I'm hoping that whatever spellcaster that might be there won't have those spells prepped and cast.

Quite true. Inaction is just as bad as not showing to the rescue at all. =)

So, let us sally forth into the breech! We have a plan, so lets go for it! The bad guys will never know what hit 'em!

Um, Sherwood? One major part of the plan is in question. See what I wrote Cap'n? Did you guys want to adjust or sally forth? Also, Powerpaw was asking if it was O.K. to loot?

Grumble grumble. Fine! We'll actually make some plans. Be that way, all reasonable and stuff. ( :P )

Hey, if you want your brave scout to stumble along in the dark blindly, have at! Ha ha! We can ask him to put on some minotaur horns and pretend he has darkvision! Hee hee! What do you say to that, Cap'n? =)

Seriously, your ambush could not have worked out better. To my surprise, those two minotaurs stood no chance. Vardadraug had succeeded in taunting one (but not both) of them. I found out he had taunted the one with the signal horn and the two personalities popped in my head and role-played the rest. But once they got into your killing zone, you guys lit them up like it was Highwind's 100th anniversary (think firework-like magical displays)! The minotaurs didn't even get a turn to act, all because of excellent planning. Great job! =)

This here killed it for me. Can't stop laughing. Today was a good day to be alive ;) *howl*

I will assume I can make both checks since we are not in a combat encounter; for the wellspring and minotaurs.

"No"on the Knowledge: Monster Lore check, but a definite "yes" on the Knowledge: Nature check. =) Please (preferably under Skills) note that Wolf did not make this Monster Lore check?

As for the wellsprings, it seems with a roll like that, that Wolf may have some first-hand knowledge (the best kind!). Whether he has visited a wellspring before or simply learned of them from lore, I leave to you.

Wellsprings 101

With a total roll of 20, Wolf has the basics down pat: A wellspring's power is in its proximity. One must enter a wellspring to gain any benefits. It typically takes at least an hour (sometimes a lot longer). No enemy of the forest can benefit from a wellspring (something evil creatures who make a similar Knowledge check understand); the minotaurs you just faced definitely fall into this category. Otherwise, wellsprings typically provide for any forest-friend or neutrally-aligned creature that needs it (there are tales of wellsprings helping other types of creatures, but as far as Wolf knows, those are just tales).

Furthermore, no wellspring comes with instructions, but Wolf (and Bren and other rangers) knows the trick - meditation. To meditate inside a wellspring is to gain some clue as to its function and operation. Then one can attempt to gain the wellspring's benefits. For the wise, this comes easily; the not-so-wise leave only with confusion. Speaking of function, Wolf is aware that there are as many different varieties of wellsprings as there are of, say, flowers. There are wellsprings of magic (which have provided bonus spells to the worthy), plenty (food and drink - all natural, no preservatives! =) ), restfulness (one requires half as much sleep as normal when sleeping here), prophecy (gain some powerful insight into a dilemma), animal kinship (Speak with Animals and gain Knowledge ranks temporarily), and more. Also, some wellsprings can only come into existence when other wellsprings are present (think of them loosely as seeds that bring life to a greater plant). This particular spring seems like such a place. Beyond these things, Wolf doesn't know much. Wolf has never heard of a Wellspring of Change before (though he did roll high enough to glean all of this).

@Kaerri I forgot to mention, rangers and druids can also make a Knowledge: Nature roll (regardless of ranks) to glean the information Wolf is enjoying. By the way, druids of certain levels automatically know things like this (a thing some rangers envy, but hey, you guys get to roll d10 instead of d8 for hit points now, unlike most rangers of previous D&D games! Ha!).

@Sherwood It is funny that you say this! Sherwood sez,

Nice roll. If it is to be known about the horny-heads, you know it!
In our table-top game, Highwind Minotaurs have constantly referred to each other as "horn-heads" for years. =)

Rolling for Knowledge: Nature.

[dice]5067[/dice]

Thanks, Wolf! But if you don't mind, please put the numerical result there (in addition to your own words)? A 10, for example, is a little less "clueless" than say, a 4, and is not misinformed (ask Kaerri about the time Bren fumbled his Monster Lore check on Drow Elves...). =)

In other news, Bren's Knowledge: Nature roll is the
exact same result as Wolf's! Looks like you two did your homework! And your fellow rangers said you two were always out girl-chasing... what do they know! =)

It's a good day here, too! That last post (starting Bronze's side-story) really has me smiling. =)

*woof*

I did not see the purpose in including the numbers when there's a whole wide explanation in their place that defines what Wolf knows much better than, say if it said "4", but alright I'll add the results too *woof*

Yeah, sorry. I should have mentioned this: The numbers mean something to me. =)

I like having both there for my own characters. Like Knowledge: Monster Lore. Lizard Men - Vaguely known (6), Ogre - Well known; can decipher Ogre Trail Markers (23). Etc. =)

O.K. Two more things and the Wanderers can get into the Wellspring of Change:

1. Do you want to take Sparkle up on her offer or have her stay "safely" with Luna?

2. Could I get a rough marching order, please? Something like: Otiorin (scouting), then Bren with Powerpaw, and so forth (so I can have a general idea of how the Wanderers will look on a map)?

Also, @killfire This side-story will go wherever direction you guide it; I am using the characters and subject matter because I feel Bronze has a serious interest in it (and this is his last chance to ask them questions before they break camp and head off for Summerset). Don't feel limited to that foundation though; go where you think Bronze would go and I'll do what I do on this end. =)

As usual, I am here to answer any questions. =)

Speaking of questions, here's one Powerpaw "asked" me this afternoon:

PP: "Hey, GM-face. Bet'cha can't guess my favorite website?"

GM: "Lolcats?"

PP: "Nope. Facebook! Hoo hoo!" =)

From what this Wolf gathered, this is roughly the plan:

(yes lunas got wolfs back and brias got otiorins back but dont try to make this into anything sexual pls ok)

MlCNzcP.jpg

Ha ha! Wolf, you are such a nut! =)

It's this formation except that Otiorin is scouting way ahead of everyone, right? And possibly with Sparkle? How far away from the party will he be?

I would suggest that he not be too far ahead. Perhaps 50-75 feet or so. Close enough that he can quickly get back to us (or us to him if he's in trouble), and far enough away that we won't be seen by the bad guys.

I just posted my response to that idea. I heartily endorse the idea, as long as it is ok with Otiorin and Sparkle.
