also for the purposes of simplicity, I'd recommend doing 1v1.

Do a max of 2 if you're gonna lose. 3 will be against the "Champion" for whoever wants to get through. Only one player however.

The battle against the champ will be decided via dice and other factors.

I'm assuming these fights will be strictly 1 v 1 with a bracket, not a melee free for all?

Or maybe you start with a melee free for all of all the combatants that want to enter the bracket to narrow the field. The eight (or some number) who make it through the melee are paired off randomly and put in a bracket; they face each other 1 v 1 until we have a champion.

Alright, correction, there are 1 v 1 duels with brackets, but they're not as important as the full free for all melee. The melee is the second most popular event in tournaments like this, with archery coming in a bit below (usually used by the city guard to get more recruits), and the most popular being jousting, which is the most popular sport. Especially when someone is accidentally killed.

Presumably more people than can fit in a reasonably small bracket are going to enter this thing for their shot at the prize and the title.

That's why I recommend you start with a Melee of EVERYONE who tried to sign up. You are disqualified from the Melee if you're knocked out of the arena, incapacitated, or yield. Top 8 or so victors in the Melee move on to the bracket. They're paired in 1 v 1 matches based on their placement in the Melee. You lose if, again, you are removed from the arena forcibly, you're incapacitated, or you yield.

That way, we have a valid reason to exclude all other faceless, nameless participants from a tiny bracket that focuses solely on matches with our characters in them.

Dude, over half my post was a higly edited version of something in a really good mod. I will fully admit, most of that post I put up was plagiarized. My original idea for a post was shit. Trust me, you'll be fine.
