Realistic or Modern A Summer to Remember

KAEDE ALLISON FLETCHER

"Thanks," responded the female, a grin tugging at the corners of her lips. Most others weren't a fan - perhaps these people had the potential to be pretty good for hanging out with during the break. She offered her own hand and gave an affirmative nod just as Kayden too, came over. "Yeah, sure."

The other female seemed to be making an attempt to converse with Xavier, so she let them be without interrupting. Kaede was more of a person to just respond to conversation rather than start it, until she had a feel for a person's personality.

"For the summer," Kai nodded, falling into step beside the boy. If there was one thing he was actually happy to be doing this summer, it was making new, cool friends he could talk all about when he returned to Hawaii in the fall. His goofy smile still played on his face as he stretched a fist towards him for a bump. "I'm helping my uncle out at his new restaurant back in town. It's Kai by the way. What about you?"

@Semblance

Elliot was a little peeved at the girl who'd just introduced herself. Butting in on a conversation was easily forgivable, but just ignoring someone who was introducing himself in spite of was just plain rude. He held his composure--for the most part. "Well, hell, am I a pile of bricks?" he mumbled, scratching his head, "I don't see any place better to sit that doesn't require some effort." he said, leaning on a pole that was so conveniently placed near him. "Where are you guys from? Names? NI numbers?" he asked, snickering a bit.

"How about you start?" he said to his new found friend, seriously wanting to get to know him. The air was a bit more somber around the guy. It wasn't a problem, but there wasn't a reason why Elliott couldn't get to know the man. And if that required chipping, he'd put in the work. The blonde girl seemed like fun on a bun, as Bender would say**. Elliott was sure they'd be swell if they put the effort in.

Aiden looked down at the boy's outstretched fist, hoping for a fist bump. He raised one of his eyebrows just slightly and extended his own fist slowly to meet his. "For the summer, too. We're on a... family vacation, you could say," he replied, smirking to himself. The only reason why his parents had brought him here was because he caused too much trouble back home, so they hoped that being isolated by the lake would soothe his law-breaking tendencies. "Aiden," he added simply when the boy introduced himself.

Just then, as they neared the lake, the familiar scent of tobacco filled the air and Aiden breathed in the tempting smell. His light brown eyes looked in the direction of the smell and found another boy with a skateboard smoking a cigarette at the edges of the group. He chuckled to himself- that guy was almost his twin. Without a word, he sped up the pace until he reached the ragged cluster of people. "Hey man, mind if I get a drag of that?" he asked the boy with the skateboard, looking at his tempting cigarette. His parents had made him dispose of all his cigarettes before the trip in an attempt to get him to quit smoking.

It had occurred so quickly that Delilah had no time to process, she stared warily as a group of teenager who seemed to be within her age range socialized amongst one another and instantly moved away. It would be better to avoid the failed attempts at social conventions rather than make them run away due to her awkwardness and eccentricities. Delilah stood before walking towards the dock and seating herself on the very edge, brown eyes peering into the murky water. It would be easy to slip in, to allow the water to surround her and protect her from the world.

Kai followed behind Aiden---his new friend, he'd decided simply---at a more lax pace. When he noticed what had made the other male speed towards the people they'd both been looking at earlier, his face immediately soured. He scrunched up his nose as he neared the bunch.

"Ugh, I don't mean to talk stink," Kai began, some Pidgin slang slipping into his speech, "but you guys are crazy smoking that crap." He made another face like he was retching when the smell hit his nose. Shaking his head, he let his smile come back as he turned to the others around him. They seemed to just be getting acquainted with one another. "Anyways, aloha! What's going on over here? A party or something?"

Xavier smiled at the girl, not really sure what to say back other than a polite nod. He bit his lip at the conversation growing, and he made it even worse by asking for himself to start. "Uh, well, Xavier Bennet." He said, smiling sheepishly at the crowd slowly forming around him. "Uh, we--" Xavier was cut off by a boy who seemed to be eyeing out his cigarette. He noticed the other boy who was scrunching up his nose. He winced slightly at the thought that it was only him that was smoking. Xavier took one last drag before passing it to the male. "Finish it." He said, offering him a sheepish smile.

Kaede's lips parted slightly as a response to Elliot's question was just about to be said, following Xavier's introduction - however she was interrupted by another new face.
Well, there's certainly a lot of teenagers here, commented the blonde mentally. It was a bit much to have to try and communicate with so many people at once, but Kaede would try her best. After today anyway, she'd know who she got along with and who she didn't exactly see eye to eye with.

"Just introductions," she explained to the newcomer, a slight shrug of her shoulders following. "Kaede Fletcher." After her addition to the list of names being shared, her gaze waited to move to the next person who'd choose to speak up. They had two smokers, two skateboarders, someone from .. was that a Hawaiian accent? The blonde was certainly curious to discover what other kinds of people were around, but decided she'd probably prefer if it wasn't all at once.

The old Toyota truck rattled along the road in the predawn hours. It made it's way through the gentle winding roads, through a wood whose inhabitants were just starting to wake up. The truck came to a lake, and skirted along it's edge for a while before pulling down a rough gravel driveway. It came to a rest outside of an old, yet homey, trailer home by the water's edge.

Michael stepped out of the truck and yawned, it was still very early. Maybe it hadn't been a good idea for him to set off for the lake at such a late hour...He checked his watch, he'd been up for almost twenty hours. Oh well. He'd sleep good tonight. Michael walked to the trailer home. It was small, less than the length of a schoolbus. It's original color had been white, but now the entire thing was tinged with a faded yellow from it's aging process. He retrieved the hidden key from underneath the floor mat right in front of the screen door.

Another yawn, and Michael unlocked the door after the screen door and walked in. It was surprisingly better looking inside. A clean mini-kitchen, albeit lacking a lot of supplies, was to his right. In front of him was a small fold-up table and chair sporting a lot of dust. And shoved in the far left corner was a queen sized mattress with a mess of old hand-knitted quilts on top. Michael, nor any of his family, had been here since the winter. He would be the only here, his mother couldn't afford to take time off her job and his sister had to stay with Momma. He flipped a switch on the wall, and a meager light-bulb in the center of the trailer came on. It would do.

Michael headed back to his truck while he stifled another yawn. He knew exactly what he needed to wake himself up. He dug around through some of the junk in the back, and procured two of his favorite things. A nice fishing rod, and a rack of beer. Satisfied, Michael walked around the trailer towards the lake. They didn't have a dock, but there was a beat up pontoon boat tied off to a metal stake stuck in the grass on the shore. It was a small three-seater, with a regular motor in the back and a trolling motor in the front. Already very sure that the regular motor would require some work to start, Michael decided to use the trolling motor.

Three minutes later, Michael was happily sipping on a drink with his fishing rod in his hand. The pontoon boat was slowly peddling across the lake, the electric hum of the trolling motor was barely audible. Michael drew the brim of his hat lower over his eyes to block the sun, which had risen even more. He took another sip, and allowed the boat to take him down the lake a ways.

"Opinions without 'p's are just onions, kid." Elliott sighed. "I take it you're young. The world is full of difference, learn that now." he said, pulling his own pack of Marlboro Smooths from his pocket and bringing a butt to his lips. He flicked his A Clockwork Orange Zippo and took a deep drag, igniting it.

Snickering at Kaede's tone, he turned his attention to the other newcomer. "Well, there goes the originality." he laughed, seeing the similarities between the two skaters ended with the boards themselves.

It wouldn't harm her to at least be polite. Delilah stared longingly at the group of teens and wished this happened to be true, truth be told she had never had a companion before. Being alone was her forte and something she had become quite skilled at, her eyes roamed across their faces and she cringed inwardly at the slightly rugged appearance of one of the boys. Standing, she carefully made her way over towards the group, her voice barely a whisper when she spoke. "Greetings."

Drees rubbed his eyes when he realized it was the morning. Usually, it would be the sun that wakes him up, but today he was super tired to notice it. That's wasn't the thing that woke him up. It was his parents arguing from outside the room, debating in whether to wake him up or not. He could hear his father saying how he should get up and go ahead outside, do something productive, but his mother wasn't listening to him. She was replying with how she should let her "baby" rest a bit. It had been a tiring day after all. Even though he agreed with his mother, he never hated his father. His father cared for him and he guessed his understood his reasoning.

So Drees got out of his bed, making a squeak which let his parents know he was awake. The arguing stopped immediately. With a smile, Drees got outside, greeted his parents, and then went to get him something quick to eat. As usual, his siblings were there to tease him and mess around, stealing away some of the things he needed to make his food. But Drees managed to get his breakfast and then looked outside. Wait. There were actual teenagers there. Teenagers. "I have to see this," he muttered, heading to the door. He looked back at his siblings and said, "Tell Dad I'm out socializing." So he headed outside and went to where all the other teenagers were. He didn't know who to speak to since he wasn't the social type. But he decided to stay there and maybe try something out.

It was the combination of the soothing electric hum of the trolling motor, and the steady flow of drinks that put Michael to sleep. He drifted off while leaned back precariously in one of the seats on the boat. His fishing rod was still in his hand, and the bait was still trailing in the water behind the boat. The pontoon boat lazily drifted without command for a little while, steadily moving towards the group of teenagers as Michael dozed.

A small tug on the end of his fishing line was the bite, and it was enough to wake him up. The fish wasn't strong enough to yank his rod straight into the water, but it did yank it out of his sleeping hands and land at his feet. Michael was just fast enough to snatch it up before it was pulled off the boat entirely. He reeled in the fish with an ease that boasted of many hours spent fishing. The fish was a largemouth, and by Michael's guess it weighed about eight pounds. A decent catch. Michael was about to toss it back in when his stomach growled hungrily. He realized that the only calories he'd brought for this vacation was in his beer. He decided that the bass would make an acceptable dinner, and he tossed it in the pontoon's container.

Michael was just finishing sloshing water into the fish's container when he heard a few voices being carried across the water. he looked up, and saw that he'd actually drifted very close to the bank again. There was a nice dock, and a group of kids round his age chatting each other up. Michael allowed the boat to continue it's course for the group. As he neared them, their words became more audible. Michael steered the slow moving pontoon alongside the bank, now very close to the group.

Aiden smiled at the male with the skateboard and accepted the cigarette gratefully. He took a couple drags and breathed the smoke out slowly, allowing the tobacco to line his lips and the smoke to fill his lungs. "Thanks, man," he said after a bit, still reveling in the taste of the cig. "I can repay you with some alcohol," he added, his brown eyes meeting the boy's eyes. Although his parents had forced him to dispose of all his cigarettes, he had managed to sneak a couple handles in his luggage. Looking around, he figured it would be more fun to drink with others than by himself. After all, he definitely had enough to go around.

"You guys down to drink tonight?" he asked the others in the group, not really bothering to ask for their names. Aiden was just looking for a little fun; he knew that the summer was temporary, so he didn't see a point in putting in too much effort to bond with them. However, he did find his brown gaze focusing on the blonde female in the group, admiring her slim figure.

Alcohol? Delilah had never had the opportunity to drink alcohol before due to her parent's restrictions on the beverage. She observed quietly as the boy smoked his cigarette before crinkling her nose in distaste at the overpowering stench of tobacco. "I do not believe it is wise to partake in alcoholic beverages on such a humid afternoon."

@Semblance

Kai didn't understand what the clearly-British man was saying, and not because of the accent. What did being young have to do with his distaste for cigarettes? He furrowed his eyebrows with a small frown, making his confusion known. All Kai knew was that it was bad for his health and that Mamá would kill him if she caught him with one of those white sticks between his lips. He was just lucky that she didn't seriously maim him for drinking. If she saw him smoking, she'd definitely kill him and then his friends for letting him smoke. Then she'd probably kill herself for letting her first born and only son do that to himself. Kai didn't think it was because he was only 17 that he didn't want his mom to commit suicide because of his actions.

"I still think you're all crazy," the manong decided. More and more people kept coming towards them and Kai had to wonder how many teens actually came to this lake for the summer. It was only his second time on the mainland, and even if Hawaii got plenty of tourists, he still found the people weird. Nevertheless, they were potential friends.

"I'm Kai," he introduced himself to the rest of the group. At the mention of drinks, Kai visibly perked up. He didn't actually drink much, but it sounded as thought they were getting a party together with all of the people hanging around. "I'm down! Party by the lake, woot woot!"

"It seems a bit early for drinking," mused the blonde, weighing her options. "But, sure - why not?" She was out here on summer break to have fun, so a couple of drinks wouldn't hurt. After she had spoken though, another girl piped up with her opinion. Apparently the latest face to join the group wasn't into that kind of thing, by the sound of it anyway. Kaede wasn't one for excluding others, nor for forcing people into anything they didn't want to do. But, it would be awkward for the girl to hang around with a bunch of drunks if it went that far.

The Hawaiian kid was obviously down for it, judging by his optimistic hollers that brought a grin of amusement to the blonde's features. Catching Aiden's stare, she quirked an inquisitive brow. Her back was facing the lake, and thus, the teenager didn't notice the boat that had only recently gone out on the waters.

Xavier smirked back at the boy who had asked for a cigarette. "Of course." He liked this guy. He seemed like someone who had a lot of common interests with himself. Xavier perked his eyebrow at the girl who had also came over which seemed to be pretty formal. He bit his lip. The guy was straight obviously, but he couldn't help but feel that he was very attractive. "What you got?" Xavier asked, wondering that sort of drinks he had.

"Well, my house is empty." Elliott suggested casually, looking off toward the sky. It'd be nice to have some people over at the place. "Matter of fact, screw it, party at my place--as long as you guys help me put breakable shit away first." he said briskly. He really hadn't decided if he was moving here or not. "What do you say, guys?" he asked, pulling his gaze down to Xavier and Kaede. He decided he liked them the most so far, compared to the ramblings of the others. The Booze man seemed cool too, but Elliott got the feeling he shouldn't get attached.

Aiden took one last drag of the cigarette before putting it out in a nearby trash can. As he allowed the foggy smoke to slowly exit his mouth, he noticed the new girl seemed disapproving of his drinking and smoking, but he didn't really care. He was just trying to have some fun. He saw the blonde girl's inquisitive brow, but instead of looking away at being caught staring, he gave her a charming smirk.

His light brown eyes redirected their attention over to the guy who had given him his cigarette and looked into the distance thoughtfully. "Absolut vodka… Bicardi rum… and I may have a handle of Fireball too," he replied, trying to think of all the drinks he had brought. "That might not be enough if all of us are trying to get wasted, especially for the whole summer. But I have a fake ID so we can just get some later if we run out," he added, remembering the liquor store they had passed by on the way here. His fake was the one thing that he never left the house without, as it had supplied him with a lot of alcohol as a result.

He looked over at the guy who had offered his house and gave him a grateful nod. "Sounds good. Your house, my drinks," he smiled, glad that he had found people similar to him. Perhaps he wouldn't mind getting close to these guys after all.

Michael brought the pontoon to a stop by the grassy bank to go talk to the group. He wanted to tie it up at the dock, but the dock looked really nice, and he didn't want some snobby rich person getting pissy about it. There wasn't any really good way to secure his boat from floating off. Michael solved this dilemma by using the anchor. It was small, only eighteen pounds. It was simply meant to keep the boat from being moved away in case of a strong breeze. Michael tossed the anchor, and it landed with a loud thud on the grass. Confident that his boat would remain unless an incredibly strong breeze came by, he disembarked the boat.

Michael's boots landed with a squelch in the slightly muddy grass. He walked towards the group. Michael had never been the type afraid of socialization. He didn't mind if people liked him or not. Michael was pretty indifferent. He could be happy in a group, or he could be happy by himself, fishing. Half finished beer in hand, patchwork jeans, and a T-shirt so faded the logo on it was unreadable, Michael was hoping these people wouldn't mind his appearance too much. He adjusted the brim of his ballcap once again to meet the demands of the rising sun, and glanced once more at his boat as he neared the group.

The only words he caught as he walked up were alcohol and party. Unsure of what to say to such a large group of teenagers, he pitched in. "I've got a few brews to donate if y'all count me in."

Delilah practically tripped over herself as she spun around, catching sight of the bother boy who had a tinge of a Southern drawl in his voice. This was an exceedingly bad idea and Delilah was unsure whether she didn't want to tag along with the others or whether getting intoxicated seemed to be a bad idea. Her parents were not very worrisome due to her tendency to stray away from people however it wouldn't hurt to drink just once. She turned towards the other boy before nodding her head. "I believe I would prefer to try this beverage.."

If he was attempting to weaken her knees with his charm, it wasn't working on Kaede. She was always quite lackadaisical in regards to suggestiveness. It took a lot to catch hold of the blonde's interest in that way. But, the teenager chose to humour Aiden anywho with a slightly exaggerated wink.

"Awesome - let's go then!" The addition of
another teen would have brought a groan forward from Kaede, if he hadn't offered more alcohol and had one of those cool southern accents.

The rapid responses of the people involved impressed Elliott. He smirked, listening to another man with a more southern drawl pitch in for some of the fun. Was this really the first way to start out in the States? Probably not. But then again, what else did any on them have to do? The young Englishman looked around for more people, since it apparently was the place to be. He spotted a tall, muscled guy in the distance. He could tell the lurker had nice eyes. He groaned, having a feeling he was coming toward their starting village.

"I guess if we are gonna do this, we do this right. We need more booze, right?" he nodded to the Booze guy. "We can obtain it together, since im on a Visa and the English drinking age is 18. Kaede," he looked to the girl with a sweet smile on his lips, "Can you tackle food stuffs? Like...in bulk?"

"If it's food you need, leave it to me!" Kai says merrily, draping his arm over the shoulders of the girl who'd introduced herself as Kaede as though they'd known each other forever and were best friends. Kai didn't really get personal space. Or unfriendliness. Or why they weren't already heading over to this guy's house. Still, he was happy as could be, with no signs of his mood dampening any time soon. He looked to her and the other girl in their bunch. "Help me out, though, ladies!"
