Thursday August 13th Route 38.

Team: Azurill (Aquamarine), Flaaffy(Tesla), Cleffa (Ruby), Igglybuff (Parfait), Ledyba (Iris)

The mud-slap doesn't do a thing to the bug given its hovering in the air but ase the grimes decides to shrink itself down, Andy has the Ledyba use another Swift. However, all 5 stars now directed to the grimer only. Since they do have a sort of tracking, that minimize if anything, wont really help too much, the stars possibly hitting a bit harder due to the smaller size of the poison pokemon. Speaking of poison, its taking its toll on the bug as well.

Ledyba (iris) moves: Supersonic, swift, Mach punch, reflect

Reggie hummed as he thought of what he could do now. None of the attacks he had could home in on the target except for Swift, and while he could use Hone Claws, his Zorua just got hit by the Mud-Slap, destroying her illusion and making her unable to see. The place was starting to get more and more covered in smog and he covered his nose. "Eugh..." That's when he got an idea.

His contest brain was trying to think of anything he could to push the smoke away, but the smoke was denser than air marginally. Thus, it would require a bit more wind/sound movement to make it swirl and move elsewhere. Or... He can make a Swift storm...

He grinned, uncovering his nose briefly to speak to Yako. "Yako, make your Swift stars go around in a circle."

Yako, trying to shake off the mud that got in her eyes, nodded as she sent a flurry of stars around the battlefield. Reggie didn't know if the smoke would be moving, but he did know that the stars were closing in on the two opponent's Pokemon.

Swift and Swift again. Koffing and Grimer took the hits. They weren't doing much damage but the chip damage was starting to pile on. It was time to fight back.

"Time to make them sick, with more Toxic!"

Koffing sent out a wave of nasty sludge towards the Zoroa. At the same time, Grimer moved amongst the shadows of the battle, its tiny form barely visible to anyone.

"You can't run, you can't hide, you can't escape this defeat, with our Shadow Sneak!"

Grimer once more stretched its shadow out towards the Ledyba, ready to strike it from behind.

With both Pokemon feeling sick (including Reggie), Reggie was even wondering how long either of them could hold out. Sure, Ghost and Bug-Types resisted Poison, but that didn't stop the tick in energy loss from being poisoned by the earlier Poison Gas.

Thankfully, the Koffing wasted a turn with Toxic. Even though a Pokemon was already poisoned, that didn't mean they could become Badly Poisoned. So, while it did hit the poor Zorua, she didn't get anymore sick.

"Hang in there, Yako." Reggie can barely even see the Grimer. He looked to Andy, feeling like he was about to puke. "Yo, Andy, our Reflect is up, so let's just go all out with Swift. We can't hit them with anything else." He said, before looking back at his Vulpix.

He heard the last girl chant something about Shadow Sneak and he knew that was going to be for the Ledyba. He shook his head. "Yako, to Ledyba's side."

With a slight nod to keep herself from being even more nauseated, she dashed over to Ledyba's side, aiming to bump her carefully out of the way so the Shadow Sneak could be used on her and phase through. "Now, Swift."

Yako created a flurry of stars that honed in on both opponents by jumping and somersaulting. She was already getting dizzy, the poison ticking away at her health.

Slightly more expectant of the shadow sneak this time and a little hrlp from a certain zoura , Iris is able to only have this graze her more than that first time but the poison and chip damage were bringing the poor bug to the end of its rope so to speak, Iris gives Yako a nod of thanks despite being very much sick.

It's here Reggie has an idea, Yo, Andy, our Reflect is up, so let's just go all out with Swift. We can't hit them with anything else." Andy nods hearing this having Iris use another set of swift to mix in with Yakos to form an even stronger barrage of stars. " I just hope its enough" he says

"One last shot, make it count or not, just don't cry when you lost!"

Grimer slid under his patner while both shot a blast of Sludge. The sludge swirled into a bigger one as it headed towards the united opponents. But as it hit through the reflect, it went down in size, allowing the power up Swift to blast through it and directly at the awating poisong types. The two pokemon stumbered backwards until the Koffing fell on the Grimer and both Pokemon laid out knocked out.

"Wow! Great battle!" Both twins sung in harmony, "Thank you for the training session!" They both giggled as they returned their Pokemon back into their Poke Balls. They both skipped away towards a Berry Tree. Just then, somehow, a Fearow came crashing down.

"And that's the bottom line, because Reina Said So!" Reina cheered as Bird Keeper Toby returned his Fearow. Reina's Nidorina stood on her side of the field trying to catch her breath. "That was so amazing Sapphire! Who knew you could do something like that!"

Reina walked over to pet her partner, avoiding the horn on her head. "Get some rest, okay? We can train more once we reach Violet City." Reina returned the blue Pokemon while Diva and Ivysaur cheered on. The Metztli trainer got up to her feet and her eyes found her traveling companions. "Whoa, you guys stink. How did your battle go? Me and Nidorina had never been so synced before, it felt amazing."

Finally, that was so close. Reggie gave a relieved sigh, happy that they won. However, he had let himself slip up. He had forgotten Yako wasn't like his more trained Pokemon. As the twins left, he watched as a Fearow crashed around their battlefield. When the bird keeper returned said Fearow and left, Reggie looked back at Reina and smiled. "I'm glad, but I wish I got to see it. And uh..." He waved his arm in front of his face, nose curling. "Yeah, Grimer and Koffing duo. Stinky. We won at least, even if our Pokemon are both poisoned. You alright, Andy?" He asked, hoping he and his Ledyba were okay. "I got a special meal made specifically for poisoned Pokemon."

He went to pick up his Hisuian Zorua, but a blur whizzed right past him. Then a blast of cold wind blew out from the white and red fox figure. Icy Wind, but it wasn't made to hurt anyone. Sure, it was cold, but it held no bite in its frost, nor force in its winds. The force was just enough to blow away the stinky smoke and smog from the two Poison-Types earlier, leaving the three trainers able to view the tall and imposing Hisuian Zoroark.

"Revenant...?" He asked.

The white Zoroark gekkered at Reggie, her mouth open and letting out a threatening hiss and a series of chirping barks. A warning. Reggie held up his hands, sighing. "Revenant, if you want Yako to be stronger, she has to battle. You can't keep protecting her." His eyes narrowed and he also yelled. "Do you want her to be weak?"

The Zoroark paused and closed her mouth, staring at Reggie then to her daughter in her arms and against her chest protectively, who laid there sick and looking a tad green. Then, her piercing red gaze went to the other two trainers, gauging their reactions, having never met them before.

Reggie sighed. "Revenant, this is Reina. My girlfriend. This is Andy, our friend." He said, gesturing towards them both when he introduced them. The Zoroark's heated gaze cooled down a little, but she still stood there, staring at them.

Reina held on to her hair as the wind blew it on her face. Her green eyes looked around until the culprit was visible to her. It seemed Reggie knew exactly who it was and was even talking to the Pokemon. However, that didn't stop a certain dragon in Reina's team to take the threat lightly. Before Reina could even began to present herself after Reggie mentioned it, the pop of Maya's Safari Ball was heard.

The long blue Dragonair landed in front of her trainer. Maya coiled up around Reina and rested her head on Reina's shoulder, like if she was about to squeeze her. But, Reina was able to move fine. "Calm down, Maya. I think she's a friend of Reggie's."

The Dragonair's eyes remained on the Zoroark, glaring and preparing to launch and attack in any moment.

The powered up version of this swift I'd able to slice through the sludge thanks to the sludge hitting that wall first it lost some power. The swift then crashes into both poison types, thankfully fainting them sealing this battle as a very lucky victory. This was lucky in more ways than one as once the congratulations were given out, the small bug starts glowing a soft white that gets brighter within a few seconds. Iris now getting a tiny bit bigger as it becomes a Ledian, sadly it was still poisoned.

"I got a special meal made specifically for poisoned Pokemon."

"Thank you very much Reggie, that would be welcome " he responds as a Fearow crashes down near where the 2 girls were. "I see Reina won her battle against the bird " he nods looking back in her direction for a moment before an icy wind grips the area sending chills down Andy's spine and Iris' carapace. This wasn't due to the icy wind itself, rather the user of the icy wind, an imposing Hisuian Zoroark stares at Reggie giving the others a once over and getting iris to hide behind Andy in fear of being made into sushi.

Andy isn't any more comfortable around the ghostly fox watching it in terror. "W-what is that Zoroark doing here?"

3 1/2 weeks. It had been 3 1/2 weeks since Naka had dropped Theo off at the Olivine City Gym like a parent dropping off their child at daycare. In those 3 1/2 weeks Theo worked harder than he ever had in his entire life. His days were filled with training and learning. He spent his time training his pokemon, and just as importantly training himself. If he was going to leave Olivine City one day he needed to be more physically prepared for whatever he might face than he currently was. His training mostly involved battling the other Gym trainers so both trainers could stay on their toes. When he wasn't battling, Theo could be found either doing physical training with his Riolu or his nose buried in a very thick book titled Pokemon Training for Dummies. It was a surprisingly informative read, breaking down some of the more complicated aspects of pokemon battling and raising in to terms even he was able to understand. It had taken him a few days after being hired to completely grasp the language of the world, but now that he had it memorized he could read it as well as he could his own language.

That all changed when the fire nation attacked reports began to come in of pokemon acting strangely on the nearby Routes. As Gym Leader, Jasmine was in charge of keeping Olivine safe to the best of her abilities. She dispatched her Gym trainers to the Routes both above and below Olivine to investigate, with Theo being assigned Route 39. He took the assignment too seriously at first, and found himself in a battle with a wild Farfetch'd. While catching the pokemon proved to be too much of a challenge for him at the moment, the battle wasn't completely in vein. In the aftermath of the battle his Shinx form was bathed in a blinding blue light, and when it faded a newly evolved Luxio stood in its place.

"Huh. So that's evolution. That's gonna take some getting used to." He muttered, pulling out his phone and opening the pokedex app. Luxio, the Spark Pokemon, and the evolved form of Shinx. Strong electricity courses through the tips of its sharp claws. A light scratch causes fainting in foes. It tallied off, Theo nodding. "Right then. Luxio. Ready to head out?" But unlike before, the Shinx turned Luxio merely looked off in to the distance, as if looking for something. "...Luxio? Maybe I'm saying it wrong. Lucio? Helloooo" he knelt down, whistling and clapping his hands to get the electric cat's attention. He opened the app and again played the Luxio data entry, nodding a confused nod. "Yeah. Luxio. I'm saying it right. Yo Lux!" He called out, the Luxio still ignoring him. "Ya know. If I had known you were going to go through a rebellious teenage phase when you evolved, I would've asked you to stay a Shinx." It was at the mention of his previous evolution's form did the Luxio turn to look at Theo, offering a deeper than normal but still happy mew. "There it is! Alright Luxio. Let's hit the road." he stood and turned to leave, glancing back to see that his Luxio was still seated, looking at him with a confused look. "What? It's time to go. This way. Cmon." he motioned with his head, the Luxio standing and taking a few steps forward. "Shinx, we gotta go." He said absentmindedly, the Luxio mewing happily before bounding forward as it had so many times before. That's when Theo realized it. He eyed the Luxio as it bound around, jumping farther than it had in the past and landing in a patch of grass it normally wouldn't have been able to land in. "You're....still answering to Shinx, aren't you?" He asked the cat, who turned to him with a happy mew.

That had been a week ago.

In the current here and now, Theo was once again on Route 39, his trusty Luxio walking by his side while a new addition to his team floated alongside him. A metallic sphere of a Pokemon with magnets on either side of its singular eye kept its pace easily with Theo, slowly floating up and down while looking in directions Theo wasn't. "I don't understand. It's been a week. I haven't even seen a Zubat. Am I really someone they should be weary of, or am I just completely oblivious?" He mutters to himself, his Luxio looking in the direction of every sound his sensitive ears picked up on.

  • Esther R. Sophys

    August 15th, 8:15 A.M.

“And I can take you for a ride on my big green tractor,
We can go slow or make it go faster~♪
Down through the woods and out to the pasture,
Long as I'm with you, it really don't matter~♪”

Legally, it was questionable; morally, it was dubius; personally, Esther loved it! Somehow—against better judgments and all good sense—funnier minds prevailed and Esther found herself 5ft off the ground, a wide, toothy grin behind the wheel of a big (not-green) tractor. It was the biggest thing she’d ever driven—in fact, it was the ONLY thing she’d ever driven and frankly, she couldn’t believe her luck! Guess licenses & permits were more of a suggestion when you owned vast tracts of land! Not that she was complaining, heh.

With a recommendation from Naka, Esther found herself gainfully employed at one Moo Moo Farm & Ranch, just north of Olivine City. It wasn’t a stressful gig: the farm focused on one type of Pokémon and the production of its titular Moo Moo milk; and, after preliminary research, the local Pokémon also weren’t a big danger to the farm’s Miltank. Esther’s day would consist primarily of leading the Miltank out to pasture and watching their diets: a healthy mix of fibrous hay and nutrient dense berries resulted in the highest quality Moo Moo Milk. Apparently, their ratio was a patented trade secret—they’d even required her to sign an NDA.

Crazy stuff, but it had Esther thinking of her own Pokémon and their diets. Maybe there was a lesson to be learned.

In any case, her tractor was loaded up and Esther had a lot of trips to make. With a wide grin, Esther put pedal to floor!

    “YEHAW!”

While Ledyba evolved, it was unfortunately overshadowed by Revenant’s arrival. Reggie wanted to make it a point to celebrate her evolution, but it’ll have to be after he calmed down Revenant somehow. He heard Reina’s Pokéball pop open and looked over, noticing a Dragonair had encircled her protectively. He sighed, shaking his head.

While still not used to these gadgets, the Hisuian Zoroark wasn’t phased as she stared at the Dragonair and decided that she was not a threat. Not because she wasn’t strong, but because the Dragonair’s priority was to keep her human safe. She looked over to see the freshly evolved Ledian cowering with the equally terrified human on Reggie’s other side.

She then looked at Reggie. Having come all this way - with the help from Reggie’s parents, of course - she felt like the odd one out. It felt weird, and she didn’t like it. She looked at her sick Zorua, a pitiful frown on her face full of indecision.

Reggie nodded encouragingly. “I have items and food that can heal her. Trust me. We fall down, get hurt, but we have things to heal ourselves and stop the pain. We can afford to have mistakes.”

Revenant looked back at Reggie, then gave a tired sigh. She sent the Zorua down and backed up, her ears flattened back. Reggie breathed a sigh of relief as he walked forward and picked up the still sickly Zorua, no hesitation in his walk, just a bit slow. The Hisuian Zorua smiled up at him, or tried to at least. Reggie chuckled. “After all that, and you’re still smiling.”

He turned back around to answer Andy’s question, apparently not caring if his back was turned to the ghostly fox. “She’s a Hisuian variant, and this Zorua is her child. She was the normal Dark-type one before her and her daughter died atop Celestial Tower in Unova. They took on the resentment after their death and were reincarnated as their ghostly versions. At the beginning of July, I had to stop them from oppressing the Ghost-Types there and preventing anyone from going into the tower to see their lost family and friends. As for how she got here…” He looked back at Revenant with some exasperation. “I have a mansion that's haunted that I got for cheap since no one wanted it. My Ghost-Types have been living there and, when I’m gone, my parents tend to the place and my Pokémon. Unlike Yako, Revenant doesn’t have a Pokéball, so she’s still pretty wild. She probably came by after hearing I was in Johto and got my parents to fly her here.” He sighed.

Revenant also looked sheepish, choosing to lay down under a tree as she watched Reggie like a red-eyed Braviary.

Reggie just shook his head and picked up his heavy red hiker’s backpack, and began unpacking things for food, Yako curled up in the crook of his arm. “So, who’s hungry~?” He grinned as he spoke with a sing-song tune, completely not letting Revenant’s arrival damper his excitement. “I gotta make something special for Iris, since she just evolved too. Don’t think I haven’t forgotten about that.” He then looked at Reina, hoping she goes along with whatever he’s doing rather than worry about Revenant.

He wouldn't dare take his eyes off the ghostly Zoroark for fear of getting instantly sliced in half from her claws, same with the now Ledian who is still terrified of her. As a result, Andy kinda zones out as Reggie explains why Revenant is even here, as a result of the dangerous pokemon, the evolution is kinda overshadowed at least till Andy gives headpats to Iris and Reggie mentions making something for her. At least the Zoroark hadn't attacked yet, Andy still not looking away worriedly.

🗺️ Route 37 - Noon

As Rick and his pokémon were nearing Ecruteak, his eyes were locked at the Bell Tower as the building came to view. Whereas most people would look at what was the tallest building in Johto with awe, Rick couldn't help but let out a sigh of frustration. "We were that close. What a waste!" He exclaimed, with Pearl also giving away a sad expression. "Chris! What do you have for me?" Rick asked, touching his headset. "I was looking to give you better news, but aside from a stall in the Safari Zone, the only store that sells Dusk Balls in Johto is in Blackthorn." Chris told. Rick rolled his eyes. "Wow! They couldn't be any more distant from each other." He sighed. "Blackthorn it is, then. In the meantime, Pokéballs will have to suffice."

🗺️ Ecruteak City - Noon

Iris skid into a halt as she crossed Ecruteak's archway. "What the clusterfuck is this?" Upon arriving at Ecruteak City, Rick's eyes widened as he looked around and saw nothing but chaos, with Mankeys and a couple Primapes running around the streets, swinging over the buildings, and causing havoc in what was supposedly a tranquil city. "And I thought Mahogany had a problem." He muttered.

It didn't take long for the Mankeys to notice the newcomers. Rick didn't have a backpack as it's typical from travelers, so they probably couldn't take much from him. Nevertheless, that beltpocket would probably be worth checking out. Good stuff comes in small packages afterall. A sly Mankey went ahead and hopped onto Iris's rump, pushing Zephir off his seat and taking a peek at Rick's beltpocket. Alas, there was no food in there. But there was an envelope, and it had cash in it. Profit! Rick glimpsed at the snatcher with disapproval, grabbing them by the arm and holding them aloft. "And what do you think you're doing?" The two stared at each other for a moment, until the Mankey reached out the can of Max Repel with its tail and sprayed right at Rick's face. The resulting burn caused him to let go the Mankey and fall off Iris, whimpering on the ground as he rubbed his eyes. "Why you bastard!" Pearl spurted some water to help clean the substance. Still rubbing his eyes, Rick pointed at the general direction the Mankey had ran towards. "Get 'em!"

Iris rushed in and easily cut ahead of the fugitive. The Mankey, with the envelope in one had and a can of repel in the other, came to a halt, staring at the mare as she stood in front of them. Iris lowered her head, growling at the Mankey in a threatening manner to have 'em drop the stolen items. The Mankey, however, wasn't convinced. They pointed the can at Iris and sprayed it at her face just the same, which caused her to rear back in pain. The Mankey took the opportunity and ran underneath. They didn't go much further before Pearl flew past them, and unlike the previous two, her head was way out of that can's reach. Zephir jumped off Pearl to face the thief. The Mankey pointed the can at the cat, but it got promptly knocked off with a slap of his tail. Iris then came from behind and stepped on the Mankey's tail, who immediately threw the envelope and started flailing in pain. Rick picked up the envelope and repellent, and put them back onto his beltpocket. "What made you think you were getting away with this?"

Iris took her hoof off the Mankey's tail, who started rubbing it in to alleviate the pain. Upon seeing Rick and Zephir hopping back onto Iris, the Mankey threw a tantrum. "If you have any complaints, please send them to the IDGAF Department! Don't expect a response anytime soon though." Rick said, coaxing Iris to turn back. Frustrated, the Mankey ran up to Iris and kicked at one of her legs. The mare gritted her teeth and instantly kicked back at the Mankey, sending it rolling against a tree. "This is a human settlement! Learn your place, you monkey pig!" Said Rick, as they made their way to the Mart where he would buy the Pokeballs.

Upon entering the store, he approached the desk and waited for the cashier to come. Moments later, a Primeape came in . Rick raised an eyebrow. "Where's the cashier?" The Primeape tapped its chest. "Oh, no! I want the real cashier!" The Primeape narrowed its eyes, tapping its chest once again. Rick sighed, rubbing his face. "Aww, my goodness... Fine! Just... give me five Pokeballs, whatever!" He said, putting the bills in the counter. However, the Primeape denied the payment, pointing at the pokeball's price tag. Rick looked up and noticed they've drawn an extra zero on the right, effectively making them 10 times more expensive. "Oh, no! That's a ripoff! Set them back to the regular price, or we're gonna have a problem!" The Primeape didn't like the human's tone. In an outburst of rage, Rick was sent flying through the door and off the store, head first. Flabbergast, his pokémon that were waiting outside went to check on him. As Rick got onto his knees, he also got hit by a pokeball thrown at his head by the "cashier". Jokes on them, he actually got a Pokeball for free! Rick sighed. "I wanna get out of this place."

While Rick was still getting his bearings, another Mankey took the opportunity to snatch the radio from Rick's belt and started running away. "Oh he's stealing! He's stealing!" Rick shouted at two police officers who were nearby, while pointing at the running Mankey. However, as said "officers" turned around, Rick realized that the Mankeys had been stealing more than just people's goods. "Wait... What?!" He rubbed his eyes to make sure he was seeing properly, and they were in fact Primeapes wearing police uniforms. "Can't believe it! These guys are stealing people's jobs, too!" He exclaimed. The officer Primeapes disregarded Rick's call and simply walked away, as they saw no illegality going on. Rick gritted his teeth as he got up, and with a little help he got back onto Iris. "After them!"

The Mankey ran towards Route 38, and Iris quickly darted ahead and cut its path. This one wasn't armed with a repel at least. "Hand over that radio! You're not faster than either of us!" The Mankey glanced at the radio, and after a brief thought, threw it at Rick, who raised his hand to grab it. However, another mankey swinged overhead and snatched the radio before it could reach Rick's hand. The accomplice continued their escape on the treetops. "Oh, come on!" Rick sighed, before continuing the chase. "Bring 'em down!" Rick commanded to Pearl. Zephir also waved at her for a ride. Since Iris could only follow on the ground, the two went to chase the Mankey on the treetops. Zephir took position behind a trunk and waited. As the Mankey passed by, he swung his tail to try and knock them off, however the Mankey simply hoped over the cat and to the next branch. Pearl flew ahead from below and fired an Ice Beam at one of the branches. As the Mankey tried to swing on it, they slipped, falling off the tree and down to the ground as Iris passed by. "Now we got 'em!" Rick said.

Iris braked and turned back. The Mankey rubbed his butt before getting up and tried to run back, but got intercepted by Pearl. And for extra measure, Zephir also grasped the escapist with Grass Knot. "I enjoyed the chase, very fun indeed! Now give it back!" Rick demanded, as he dismounted and walked over to the tied Mankey to take the radio. Then, out of a sudden, an uncurbed Tauros rushed out of the thick bushes in a headlong charge, and it didn't seem like it was gonna stop anytime soon. "That's bulls-" Everyone moved out of the way to not get trampled. Except the Mankey, which was still wrapped in vines in the middle of the path and thus was taken in for a rodeo. "Seriously?" Rick ran to Iris and quickly mounted. "We can't let that thing reach the city and cause more problems than there already are!"

Iris raced alongside the Tauros, while Rick used the Escape Rope he had purchased before in Violet City for a lasso. As he threw it at the bull's horn, the latter shoved Iris aside, causing her to falter and forcing Rick to switch mounts as the mare fell behind. Leaning on the bull while he grabbed it by the horns, the Mankey that had taken the spot first, jumped on Rick's back and started smacking him in the head. "Why you son of a bitch, I'm unwillingly saving you!" He shouted, before grabbing its arm and taking the radio off its hand. "This is mine by the way!" He shouted. The Mankey kicked Rick in the face and almost knocked him off the Tauros had he not grabbed the rope. The radio wasn't so lucky though, as Rick let it go to hold himself. He kicked his legs up and returned the favor by smacking the Mankey in the nose and off the Tauros. Persistent as it was though, the Mankey still managed to grab onto the bull's tails. Rick rolled his eyes, as the Mankey pulled themselves up. "Give your worst!" As the Mankey lunged at him, Rick grabbed it by the leg and threw it off to the bushes. "Pesky little creature!" He exclaimed, before focusing on his task.

Rick gritted his teeth and gave the rope a few more turns around the horns and neck of the Tauros. Moments later, Iris came in at full speed with Zephir on her back. "This thing won't stop for nothing!" He said. Iris's eyes narrowed, as she accelerated. After getting ahead and putting some distance, she turned around and braked. Rick gritted his teeth and started pulling the rope as much as he could. "Brace yourselves!" He shouted. Both the Tauros and Iris glared at each other. An aura transferred from Zephir onto Iris as the former used Helping Hand. Iris gritted her teeth, before rearing and stretching out her front legs and she neighed. As the two pokémon collided, Iris was pushed several feet across the road, her hooves struggling to gain traction and with little signs of letting up. Pearl eventually caught up to the party and wrapped her body around the Tauros, at which point the bull finally started to slow down. "Grass Knot!" Zephir jumped off Iris and started pushing at her leg, all the while his body glowed green and multiple vines started to grow to ensnare the Tauros's feet. Once it came to a full stop, Rick jumped off. "Thunder Wave!" Pearl's neck orb lit up and started pulsing, as it released rings of static electricity.

Tired, paralyzed and restrained, the Tauros eventually collapsed on its belly. Rick and Iris also dropped to the ground, panting heavily. "What the hell is going on with these pokémon?" Rick murmured, before he turned to Pearl. "Can you go back and pick up the radio that I left behind? While I rest a little bit? Please?" He asked, before lying flat on the ground.

🗺️ Ecruteak City - Afternoon

Rick and his pokemon dragged the Tauros all the way back to Ecruteak, where the rangers would take care of him. After taking a breathing, Rick called. "Rangers called to the western gate, please!" A group of Primeapes wearing ranger uniforms came in to check. "Aw, fuck this shit!" He threw the rope on the ground in exasperation. At that point, Rick had had enough. He headed to Ecruteak's Gym to talk to the gym leader. That, of course, assuming his place hadn't been taken by a Primeape yet. He shoved the doors open, and was at least relieved to know that the gym trainers were actual trainers and not some roleplaying pokémon.

Among regular trainers who came to train, Mediums and Sages stood along an "S" shaped bridge over some thick, dark fog, waiting for the next challenger. Gastlys and Haunters floated around, barely visible. The Gym Guide eventually approached Rick as he walked in. "Greetings, trainer! If you wish to challenge Gym Leader Morty, please walk over that bridge. You must first prove your worth by defeating our Gym Trainers. Be mindful of your steps." He told him. Rick however, was having none of that. "I have nothing to prove, sir. Nor do I have time nor patience for that Gym Challenge of yours. Now I do need to talk to Morty. Urgently!"

The Gym Guide and all the other trainers turned towards the platform at the far end of the bridge. As the Mediums blew their candles off, two torches lit up at the furthest platform, where a man walked out of the shadows. He stared at Rick with hands in his pockets and a serene expression. "I'm Morty of Ecruteak City Gym. If you're not here for a challenge, then what brings you here in a time like this?"

Rick narrowed his eyes walked a few steps in before speaking. "It's a jungle outside! Mankeys have taken over the city! Heck, the Primeapes are even taking over people's jobs!" He complained, waving his arms. The Gym Leader closed his eyes in what seemed like discontentment. "Yes. That's the repercussions of the Sanguine Swarm. Mankeys are moving towards South to avoid the swarms of Zubats in the North, and Ecruteak just happens to be in the middle of it. There's plenty of food here, and Zubats don't attack the cities. So a lot of them choose to stay." He explained.

"Well, you're the Gym Leader! Just kick them out to where they came from! Surely this is not a problem for you. I could even help with that and it would give me some satisfaction after what I've been through since I arrived."

"And they would just come back after a few hours, except now they'll be angry and vengeful, and some might even evolve because of that anger. You're not solving the problem by using force. You're escalating it. That's the last thing you wanna do when our health care is having complications."

Rick crossed his arms and tilted his head. "What do you mean complications?"

Morty frowned. "Mmm... so you haven't checked the Pokémon Center yet..." Rick's eyes widened. "You don't say..." He rushed out of the gym and towards the Pokémon Center. The automatic doors opened and he ran to the center of the hall. "Nurse!" He called. A pink haired figure, wearing a white coat and hat, stood behind the reception desk. "Oh, no... please, no..." As they turned around, it was revealed to be a Primeape in disguise, with make-up and a wig.

"AAAAAHHHHhhhhh!!!!"

Rick bursted out of the building, with hands in his head and kneeling. "Give me a big! Fat! Fucking! Break!" He shouted, as he pulled his hair. Moments later, Morty came to him. "So? What do you think?" He asked. "What do I think? I miss the Zubats already! At least those only cause trouble at night. Mankeys cause trouble the whole day!" Rick whined. The Gym Leader nodded, rubbing his chin. "Well... I don't blame these pokémon given the circumstances." Rick sighed, and stood up. "If you could help the authorities finding out why these Zubats are acting like this. The Gym Leaders can coordinate with the Aces and Rangers to make sure the cities don't fall in too much disarray. But we can't reach everywhere." Added Morty.
Rick crossed his arms. "I was on my way to search the caves before this whole Mankey madness."

"Mt. Mortar is right ahead on Route 42. Mind you, it's not an easy cave to navigate." Morty warned. "Then I better get moving and make the most out of my time. And I need pokeballs to capture some Zubats along the way for examination. Reasonably priced, that is." Morty nodded. "I'll provide." The Gym Leader handed a couple Pokéballs to Rick. Such generosity, Rick wondered if he could get more out of it. "Dusk Balls?" He asked, smirking. Morty scowled. "Now you're asking too much. If you want those, you'll have to buy them at Blackthorn's Mart. To be honest, I don't expect you to find many opportunities to catch Zubats anyway." Rick raised an eyebrow and crossed his arms. "Well don't mind if I disappoint you." He went to retrieve his Escape Rope, then mounted on Iris and headed towards the Eastern gate. "Don't forget to report to the authorities if you find anything relevant. Best of luck! 'Cause you'll need it..." Morty said, before walking off towards his gym.

🗺️ Route 42 - Dusk

Rick stopped by the western-most entrance of Mt. Mortar. Going by Route order, this was the first cave system for him to check. It was also the largest in the region. It could be argued that he should cover the smaller ones first before tackling what would be the most time consuming. But he didn't feel like going back and forth when he could just get one out of the way. "Alright! Those Zubats should be leaving for dinner in a couple hours. In the meantime, let's spread out and take a look around! If you find anything that shouldn't belong here, call!" The three pokémon nodded and spread out. Pearl went to check the lakes first, before scouting from the sky; Iris went to check the cliff sides, while she benefited from a higher point of view to the base of the mountain; and Zephir would check the woods. Rick found a hidden place where he could get a clear view of what came in and out of the cave. At least from that one. With multiple entry points, it would be impossible for him to keep an eye on all of them. But he expected Pearl and Iris to have those covered. "And now we play the waiting game. The most boring part of the job." He mumbled.

As the Sun started to set, Pearl and Iris returned to Rick. He looked at them and closed his mostly empty notepad. "Nothing I presume?" The two pokémon shook their heads. "I wasn't expecting anything anyways! He shrugged, putting his notepad back into his beltpocket, and stood up, stretching a little bit. "If there's something, it's inside the caves. Now, we better find some nice hiding spot. Don't need those blood addicts to ruin our tour before it even starts." Zephir eventually came in from his search, a little later than the other two pokemon, and started tapping at Rick's leg. "Yes?" The cat started pointing with his tail before running towards the woods. Rick's eyes narrowed as he followed the leafeon to a nearby tree, which had a camera attached to its trunk. Zephir sat in front of it, grooming and making himself beautiful for the camera. Iris got close to it, sniffing and take a close peek. Rick eventually came in from the side and out of view. "A trail cam, huh? Or a privacy taker, as I like to call them. Don't ask how I learned the so called "mysteries" of pokémon breeding." He nodded, rubbing his chin.

"Hold on! How old were you?" Chris asked on the radio. "Oh, I don't know... 15? It was before I got Iris. They gave me a cheap one for birthday, and I had to put it to good use. I believe it was a Miltank and a Tauros? I didn't know pokémon could do those kind of things." Rick told. "You watched that kind of content before you were 18?"

"And then I uploaded it on Mewtube, yes. Really, adults should stop hiding things from kids. So when they do learn the truth, they won't be surprised. They always told me it was magic. Turns out it is very... umm... natural." He added. Chris sighed. "But I digress! When I see one of these, poachers is the first thing that comes to mind. And what do we have here?" Tilting his head and peeking from the edge of the camera, he saw an identification tag. "Hm... nevermind, it's from the Sinnoh Research Lab." He muttered, now walking in front of it. "In Johto?"
"Well, after Kanto it's the closest Region, so it's not that weird. Maybe they're afraid it might reach Sinnoh through South. And what else..." Reading a bit further below, he saw a name and contact that were familiar. "Naka!" He exclaimed.

"That woman is everywhere where's trouble!" Chris commented. "Well, at least someone else is being proactive about this. I won't even complain, means I don't have to do it all by myself. Which gives me an idea..." Rick pondered for a bit, then smirked. "If we're working on the same case, surely she won't mind if I borrow this thing for a few minutes!" He said, as he proceed to detach the camera from the tree. Chris, however, wasn't convinced. "Uh... Shouldn't you be asking permission first?"

"No time for that! Those things are coming out at any minute. But go ahead and do that for me! I left my phone on the table, remember?" As he meddled with the camera, a loud beeping sound came out of it, causing him and his pokémon to wince. "Damn... this sounds almost as bad as a Kricketune." He rubbed his ear and continued on. "Wait! What model is that camera?" Chris asked. Rick sighed. "Who cares? They all serve the same purpose, that is filming stuff. So long as it does that, I'm happy enough." He said, as he finished detaching it and juggled it in his hand.

"Well, if it's the latest model, you might regret touching it before you get confirmation." Chris warned. Rick grinned. "What is it gonna do, explode? That would be shocking!" And as he said this, he did indeed get shocked, immediately throwing the camera in the air. "What the freaking hell!" He shouted, while Chris could be heard laughing. "What is so funny about this?" Rick asked, grasping his hand. "Because that electric shock only triggers if someone on the other side presses a button." Rick raised an eyebrow, then glanced at the camera on the ground with a suspicious look. "Bitch..." He muttered, as he went to pick it up again. "I'm setting it back! Don't you dare press that thing again!" He talked to the camera with narrowed eyes, as he attached it back to the trunk. "Welp! Your loss! I was gonna give you a privileged view of the cave." He said, dusting off his hands. "But meet me at Mahogany by morning and I might give you a description. It won't be as good." He said, shrugging. Moments later, Iris groaned, and Rick gave a hurried look at the cave's entrance. "Shit! Here come those suckers. Everyone to your positions!" He said to his pokémon, as they went to hide.

Rick stayed crouched under thick bushes and watched, as a large number of Zubats, and even Golbats, came out from the cave's entrance like a plume of smoke. "Damn... how many are there..." He muttered. And that was just one side of the cave. He could see even more swarms flying off from the other entrances of Mt. Mortar by simply turning away. After waiting for several minutes, plus a couple more for reassurance, he finally left his hiding spot and ran towards the entrance. His pokémon soon joined up. He peeked inside the cave, then took a step back while he took the Max Repel from his beltpocket and started spraying it. "Alright, this is it! Iris will stay outside in case those Zubats decide to come back early. If anything comes up, neigh! The rest will come with me. Pearl, you light the way!" Pearl went first, followed by Zephir. Rick turned to Iris one last time. "I'll call if we need something. Make sure nothing gets in. Pokémon are all out of their minds these days." He told Iris. She nodded, while Rick petted her cheek before going in.

Esther R. Sophys

August 15th, 10:15 A.M.

“Oof, that’s the last of ‘em.”
Esther rolled her shoulders. With a limbering waggle, she shook off the lingering weight of hay bales. Step after languid step, she distanced herself from the neat, hard-stacked hay-squares until the entire stack was within view. Each hay bale sat in the ballpark of 30 lbs. and throughout the morning, Esther and her Pokémon had moved some 600 lbs. from the far side of the ranch to the barn where the Miltank took refuge.

The Sanguine Swarm and its vampiric constituents posed an obvious threat the pastoral residents of Moo Moo Ranch. One even more ‘complex’ than Esther had initially conceived. She’d gotten the run-down during orientation: Miltank were large Pokémon and prime targets for vampirism; and, while that wouldn’t normally be cause for concern, the number of Zubat out and about created an elevated health risk. Furthermore, even in situations where the Zubat didn’t drink enough to cause issue, blood loss itself negatively impacted the body’s ability to produce milk. That went for humans and Pokémon. It went without saying, but the Ranch wasn’t keen on losing profit and—to put it frankly—Esther’s real job was to maintain their bottom line.

“Alright team, take five! It’s lunch time!”
Farmwork didn’t tend to pay much, but what it lacked in cash it made up for In amenities. Case in point, the fresh Sitrus & Chople berries Esther had been provided to keep her Pokémon full and energized. Sitrus berries weren’t common: highly nutritious as they were, they came with an associated price tag that only compounded with volume. But not her bill, not her problem! Special ingredients like this deserved to be used for something with a certain…pizazz.

Reina patted the dragon coiling around her, but that didn't seem to calm Maya down. Instead she got a little tighter around her trainer, almost like a spring being pushed before releasing it. "Sorry, she gets nervous around trainers. I have to talk to her before meeting new people or she just gets all defensive."

Reina waved towards Reggie, as if to say it's okay, before turning her attention to pet the Dragonair. Diva seemed to be on the same plan though. She stepped from behind Ivysaur, totally not using her as a shield, and started scolding the Zoroark, from a safe distance. Reina just rolled her eyes and said "Callate Diva, no seas metiche."

Clefairy just growled and walked back to hide behind Flor, the Ivysaur who was just happy to be part of the group. Reina sighed. "Just ignore my Pokemon for a bit."

Reggie felt a little bad for everyone's discomfort. Seeing a ghostly fox that could easily beat everyone here was likely to set some concerns and perpetuate fear. Andy couldn't keep his eyes from her, Reina's Dragonair was like a coiled spring, and Reina's Clefairy tried to... scold the mother fox?

Revenant didn't give the Clefairy any heed, she just laid there, staring at Reggie as he created a sling from fabric to lay the sick Yako in.

Soon though, as Reggie pulled out his cookware, he began making food. Different aromas wafted from Reggie's pots and pans. Looked like he was grilling fruit, cooking meats, and making a hearty stew. He just hoped the aromas helped to ease everyone's nerves.

While Reggie would ask Reina on a normal day for a translation of what she said, he found that he wanted to fix the mood of the area around them. He sent out the rest of his Pokemon. While the Hisuian Zorua laid in that sling and close to Reggie's chest, his Kantonian Vulpix sat on a nearby rock, watching Reggie make food.

Meanwhile, his barely-a-Shiny Gengar floated over to Revenant and patted her head, petting her and softening her concerned gaze as he calmed her down. His Shedinja floated above the food, unable to eat but able to sense the smells of the food and getting himself excited.

A set of stone tablets laid there beside the food table, the Runerigus looking rather conspicuous as this was a forest route and he was trying to blend in. Meanwhile, his Drakloak and Dreepy partner floated about above them, humming before the Drakloak rested beside Andy, cooing and waving at him. Meanwhile, the Dreepy partner floated off from Drakloak's head to approach Maya cautiously, chirping and waving, then making a figure 8 as they wanted Maya to maybe fly with them.

A Drifblim - a very very large one at that, even rivaling some hot air balloons - sat in the background, humming to herself. A Musharna floated beside Reggie, cooing happily as she nibbled on some snacks Reggie had prepared for anyone who was still hungry before he could make his feast.

Having nine Pokemon of Reggie's settling around the area had the potentiality for some bit of chaos if the others followed suit, but the large ones or the potential problematic ones stayed either outside the inner circle or near Reggie. Despite the potentiality for chaos, they seemed to be chill for the most part, vibing with the relaxed nature they love when it came to smelling Reggie's food.

After making some more snacks (and two specific Pecha-special cookies), he put the snacks on two plates. He gave his Musharna one plate to carry to Andy, offering snacks for him and his Pokemon, and offering one of the Pecha-special cookies to Iris specifically. Meanwhile, after Reggie gave his Zorua the other Pecha-special cookie, Reggie came over with a platter towards Reina and smiled as he offered her snacks as the Zorua gave adorable nibbling noises as she ate the sweet poison-curing cookie. "For you and your Pokemon."

There were some snacks that were shaped like cute little hearts on Reina's platter specifically. The Dreepy who had asked for Maya to fly with them tried to steal a snack, only for Reggie to chuckle and snag the Dreepy by the scruff of its scaly back, pulling them away, the now upside-down ghostly dragon rested there like a limp noodle, crossing their arms and huffing in disappointment.

10 A.M and alls well.

Theo was supposed to be looking for threats. It had been several days now, and at the start of it all he wasn't even sure what it was he was supposed to be looking for. By now, given that nothing had happened so far, he felt safe enough to assume he knew what was normal and when something was amiss. With the lent Magnemite looking left, the Luxio at his feet looking right, and Theo himself looking forward, the three stooges continue forward step by step inch by inch until a Caterpie dips down in front of them on a <<String Shot>> and begins to sway side to side, letting out a happy shrill. "Hey buuuuudy. How ya doin??" Theo holds out an arm for the Caterpie to land on and crawl around on, the Caterpie shrilling again. Every few days since he started patrolling Route 39 he had found himself constantly encountering this same Caterpie over and over, and over the course of their encounters began a friendship with the small Bug-Type.

As the Caterpie spoke the Luxio at his side perked up, lowering his feline form and extending his claws as if getting ready to pounce as he heard something coming towards them. From the nearby bushes the same Rattata and Meowth he had text Esther about came out, continuing their game of cat and mouse. Luxio relaxed his stance, though kept an eye on the duo as they ran around the small gathering a few times. Theo chuckled, shaking his head and calling after the two as they ran off "You'll get him one day!!" he called after the pair of pals, ducking a few seconds later and covering the Caterpie with his free arm to protect it from their airborne attacker.

10:03 A.M and not all was well.

"Back to the tree!" he called out before throwing the Caterpie in to the air, the small green bug firing another <<String Shot>> in to the air and attaching to the same branch it had been hanging from, reeling itself in. At the same time Theo turned his attention to his would be attacker, spotting a familiar figure making a wide arc of a turn to make another attempt at his breakfast. "You" he said bitterly as he caught sight of the Farfetch'd coming back towards them, Luxio again crouching down. The Farfetch'd replies with a muffled caw of his own as it came back around, glancing around for the meal it had missed on its first pass. With his form outlined in a white energy the Farfetch'd dove at Theo, his <<Aerial Ace>> powered by both him using his full speed and letting gravity do its job. This human just cost him his breakfast, and this wasn't the first time their paths had crossed. "Not today Chachi. <<Spark>>, now!" As the Farfetch'd drew close Luxio pounced from his hidden spot, his entire form engulfed in blue electricity. With a loud cry Luxio crashes in to the side of the Farfetch'd with enough force to knock it off course, skidding a few feet in the dirt before coming to a stop at the base of the tree the Caterpie it was looking for with a confused look. What had just happened??

"Yeah, got your number now Chachi. Didn't like that did ya? This is your fault." He drew circles in the air pointing mostly at the Luxio that just knocked him off course. The Luxio narrowed his eyes at the Farfetch'd, daring him to try something. The Farfetch'd eyed the food costing trainer and then his pokemon companion, knowing he couldn't take another hit like that. Before it had evolved, maybe. But now? Farfetch'd knew when to call it quits. He shot the trio a bleheleleh and a wing pulling the lower half of his eye down in mocking before turning and flying away, Theo calling after him "Hey!" and giving chase. His cardio training was paying off, as both he and Luxio were able to keep up with the bird quite easily. And chase him they did, until...

10:15 A.M. and alls well.

Theo ran until he came to a barrier that kept him from giving the Farfetch'd any more of a chase: A wooden fence marking the edge of someone's private property. He leaned on it, shaking a raised fist at the flying bird as it flew away in to the distance. "I'll get you yet you...you.....bird!" he forgot the Pokemon's name. There wasn't any denying it. he turned and leaned against the fece for a moment in rest, sliding down it so he could rest his legs. He knew he was still on Route 39, but he wasn't 100% sure where. "Let me see....somewhere on Route 39 that would require a fence....has to be...here?" Momo farm? No, that's not it. MooMoo Farm. Moo. Dairy cow farm. It made sense the cows of this world would be pokemon too. he already had a bull, so a cow wasn't out of the realm of possability. "If I'm right, let's see what we have here." he muttered before standing, turning to look in to the fenced in area. It wasn't difficult to spot the pokemon the fence was meant to protect, given how many of them there were.

Miltank, the Milk Cow Pokemon. Miltank produces highly nutritious milk, so it has been supporting the lives of people and other pokemon since ancient times.

Huh. Wars had been fought over less back home. Looking at the image of the Miltank on his pokedex app, Theo leaned against the fence to rest a bit longer. "But...whys it pink?" Pink made it stand out like a sore thumb. Shouldn't it be...not pink, to more blend in with its surroundings? Ah hell what did he know. Watching the scene set before him Theo spotted someone in the fields of the MooMoo Farm, wondering if they could see him too. "Heyyy!!!!" he called out to the individual, waving to get their attention. "Good morning!!" He was slowly starting to reach out to other people. He actually had friends for once, and had tried being the one to initiate conversation with them. Maybe this person was the next step in that.

Maya just hissed in response to the small dragon, making small vibrating sounds while her ears and tail rattled. Reina rolled her eyes and starting squirming. "Vieja peleonera!" She said as Maya became loose and finally let Reina go. With another low growl, she wrapped up next to Reina's other two Pokemon. "Let's just enjoy a meal, okay?"

Reina sat down next to her team, with Diva acting all normal and happy while sitting next to her. Flor the Ivysaur just slumped right where she wasy. Being recently evolved took a toll on her and she wasn't used to having to consume much more energy. The sun was out and it was time for the bulb Pokemon to feed. Reina petted the attention seeking Clefairy and then took her backpack and shirt off. She was still wearing her black top, but it was hot enough to not require it. That didn't mean she didn't apply sun lotion just in case.

Her green eyes shifted between her Rotomphone and Reggie cooking. She would also ask Andy some questions about himself to get to know him some more. Once Reggie stepped up to her with some good, she smiled and giggled at the heart shaped ones. "Aw, give the little lagartija some!" She said as she watched him pull the ghost dragon away. Reina took a bite out of her food and...

I Love You Hearts GIF

She sighed in delight. More positive things to tell her mom about the guero she had fished up. She shared the food with her team, besides Flor who was soundly asleep with a smile on her face and some drool down her chin. Maya pretended not to like the food, but like her trainer, she couldn't hold back the blush on her face. Diva, enjoyed it openly, she might not like that blonde human grinding up her trainer, but she had to admit he knew how to cook.

That Ghost fox apparently got everyone on edge as Andy would slowly relax and try to at least enjoy himself a bit , the same isn't said for poor Iris who is still frozen in terror of the ghost type. The small bug having to eat the two special cookies made by Reggie in private away from that Zoroaks gaze and then immediately returned to her ball. The others remain decidedly neutral in terms of the fox.

Andy smiles enjoying Reggies cooking as well, this being followed by Reina asking him a few questions. "Well I don't have any relative aside from my parents who were breeders" he nods while enjoying his food as well. Speaking of foods all of Andy's pokemon do enjoy it but that ghostly fox would have their attention the entire time, wearing wary expressions the whole time

Something with pizazz…pizazz…what could she cook with pizazz? When Esther thought about berry-based treats, the forefront of her mind was filled with sweet juices, crunchy-juicy salads, and refreshing smoothies. And those were great. They were excellent snacks and ease on the taste buds; but when Esther thought about cooking up a special dish…a bit of slicing and dicing seemed…lazy…lackluster. That just wasn’t going to cut it.

Oh well, to the internet once more! Lesse—Compote, Cobbler, Crisp, Crumble…what’s with all the C’s? Whatever, Cobbler sounded doable. Buttermilk, lemon juice, baking powder…she was missing a few things, but Olivine was just down the road, and she had another hour before she was back on the clock. Yea, she could def—
"Heyyy!!!!"

“Heeyy? If you’re looking to purchase Moo Moo Milk, the farm proper is another five minutes’ walk down the road.”
Esther swiveled on her heels to face the third wanderer this morning and—
“Oh!"

"Hello stranger! How goes?”

Tagalong

With her Pokémon chosen for this moment - her trusty Sceptile and her healer Hatterene for multiple battles - Naka found herself at the foot of the Glitter Lighthouse. Amphy the Ampharos sat at the very top, being the beacon of light for those souls out at sea to come home to.

After asking around, she learned about the different kinds of people in the Glitter Lighthouse. Johtonians, some sailors. What they had were likely going to be Water-types, or those who were good against Water-Types’ weaknesses. Some most likely had Johtonian Pokémon, but it was also doubly likely for some of these trainers to have exotic Pokémon - those found in places like even Alola.

Honestly, Naka had no idea what she’d got herself into, but given that she was thinking about using Aero but realized the possibility of Water-Types, she was going to be glad she made the decision.

When she read the voucher for this, it was said that the battles get harder and harder as one went up. The reward? Petting Amphy.

Nothing else to it really. Naka didn’t see if there were any other rewards aside from spending quality time with the celebrity Ampharos of Olivine City, whose light saves many lives who come in from the vast seas. Despite all of that, Naka wanted to make something of it. The stakes weren’t too high and - honestly - the reward wasn’t a thing she wanted either. Not only did she allow the transparent view of all of her Pokémon’s Pokeballs so her Mienshao, Chikorita, and fiery Tauros could watch specifically, she decided to call Mason again, rolling her eyes as Mason picked up when the first ring barely sounded. “Hey hey heyyy, siiiis~. What’s up?”

Naka couldn’t help but wonder if Mason was just happy to talk to her again, or if he’s just happy he can torment her. She just shook her head before replying. “Yeah, I’m at the Glitter Lighthouse. There’s a doubles gauntlet. The reward is petting Amphy when you reach the top, but since there’s nothing else to it… I would like you to-...” She paused. Why was she so scared? Even though he wouldn’t be here physically, it felt like how they were back in Hoenn, journeying together and listening to Mason giggle as she made the wrong move. She continued, shaking her head. “... I want you to watch.”

There was a squeal on the other end of the line. “Hell yeah!” The realization that Mason still looked up to her - and got this excited to see her battle and potentially help her get better - hit her like a ton of bricks. And yet, she felt lighter… It felt good to know that he wasn’t against her like she had thought. Maybe she got it all wrong.

Mason chirped on the other line and there were some odd clacking noises, as if strangling his phone in a death grip. “Where’s the camera, where’s the camera? Let me seeeeeeeeeee!”

With a roll of her eyes, Naka turned on the camera and put the phone in her camouflage jacket’s breast pocket, the camera peeking out.

“Hell yeah! Wait…” Mason paused. “Why don’t you have a Rotom in your phone?”

Naka simply shrugged. “I don’t want one in my phone.”

“Paranoid it’ll scan your data and throw it around?”

Naka scoffed. “If it did that, then I’d have to return the Rotom for one that is properly trained in confidentiality.” She crossed her arms, of which Mason saw the arms coming together. He could just imagine the pout on his sister’s face, which made him laugh.

Rolling her eyes, Naka pulled her phone out and swapped the camera around so Mason could look at her. “Where’s your camera, huh? You giggling turd. I’m sure you’re gonna get a kick out of watching me fight just so you can throw insults at me again.”

Again, Mason laughed. “Oh man, it’s been so long to see such a grumpy look on your face.” The camera switched on and Naka can see Mason.

It… really has been so long. His unkempt black hair, his piercing blue eyes… She remembered how those sweet baby blues would be used on her to make her do what he wished, the closest thing anyone has gotten to using Baby-Doll Eyes and Fake Tears.

But now, they were filled with mischief and cunning and…

Was that sadness?

Naka sighed, staring at Mason rather defeatedly, her bright blue eyes as a kid now a stormy grey-blue, her blonde hair parted to the side with the sides and back of her head shaved to a buzz cut. She looked like a punk hiding behind professionalism. Mason’s eyes lingered on the scar that went from her left cheek down her neck. He didn’t know where it came from, and he honestly forgot that she got into enough trouble without him.

He nodded his head. “Hey… I never really asked about that scar.”

Naka touched her neck and cheek, then huffed as she felt the stretched, discolored skin. “Yeah… I was doing field work six years ago. I then heard some distressed noises and found a poacher had captured a weakened Nidorino. I went to save it, and the poacher sent out his Scyther. The Scyther nearly killed me. After I dealt with him and the Scyther, I went to save the Nidorino, but in a panic, he used Horn Attack on me. I was thankful that my Hatterene used Aromatherapy on me before the poison could kick in, but now I have a nasty scar on my tummy.” She sighed, looking away. “It’s nothing now, just a memory.”

“A memory that scarred your skin.” Mason quipped. “If you’re gonna treat everything that impacts you as a person or proves something about yourself as just a memory, you’re gonna have problems later. Some day, you have to admit that it changed you or set in stone what was in question.”

Naka hated hearing that, but she knew Mason was right. She just nodded, switching the camera over so Mason could watch ahead, put in a Bluetooth earpiece in her ear to connect with her phone, and put her phone back in her jacket’s breast pocket. “Just, please don’t give me tips in the middle of these battles. They’re league-sanctioned I think, so no need to help me.”

“Wouldn’t this be breaking the rules then? Wouldn’t it be safer to have a Rotom to make it look like you’re just recording all this? Or maybe… just don’t have your earpiece in.”

Naka rolled her eyes then sighed. “Fine, but I won’t be able to hear you. Talk to you later.” She put her Bluetooth away in her pocket, keeping the connection going so if Mason does talk, he won’t be heard by anyone or herself.

With a sigh, Naka looked up at the white and blue-accented lighthouse, all 354 feet of it. It had a total of six floors, with the light room being the sixth floor, and each floor having vaulted ceilings and reinforced flooring for battles. Some parts of the floor were even carved out to become battlefields and given proper suspensions and shock absorbers to the rest of the supporting floor, allowing even an Earthquake to be used in the middle of the lighthouse without it collapsing or even making it shake. Inside the tower itself, the third floor and fourth floor had a quarter of their spaces divided - mirroring the division - into subsections for stability, while the fifth floor had a wall that only went from the middle to the northern section of the wall. Within the northern end of this tower from the first floor to the light room was a sturdy elevator shaft, which was the main portion of its stability as walls went from this elevator shaft to the center of the lighthouse’s thick support beam. It was truly a feat of human engineering.

Naka went inside after steeling herself. The gauntlet started as soon as one entered.

Glitter Lighthouse, 1st Floor - 2 Trainers
Naka’s Silenus the Sceptile & Hattie the Hatterene VS Lady’s Miltank & Slowbro

Naka entered the first floor. The space would normally have tables and chairs on either side, with trees on either side of the designated walkway that led from the front door to the elevator. However, the potted plants, tables, and chairs were moved to avoid incurring any damage, and the elevator doors looked to be locked. On the left side of the elevator bay were stairs that went up to the second floor.

The first trainer was an older woman in the middle of the lobby, and the second trainer - a sailor - leaned against the wall for the stairs, staring at them and waiting with his arms folded. The older woman in front of Naka looked to have been a nurse. She noticed Naka first and she gave a slight bow. “I will be your first opponent. Good luck.”

She sent out both of her Pokémon: A Miltank and a Slowbro.

Naka sent out her own, her Sceptile and Hatterene appearing before her as Naka narrowed her eyes at the Miltank and Slowbro. She can tell that this Miltank doesn’t have Thick Fat, but she can’t tell if she had Scrappy or Sap Sipper. Moving onto the Slowbro, she saw that it had a rather blank expression which… didn’t tell her much. Most Slowbro had blank expressions. But considering this was a double battle, it was likely that Slowbro did not have Regenerator, but potentially either Oblivious or Own Tempo.

Considering these two Pokémon looked well taken care of, it was likely they were trained for double battles. However, she can tell that they weren’t that experienced compared to her own two Pokémon. Maybe they were as experienced as her Hatterene, but not her Sceptile. Naka can oddly feel some hint of resignation from the Slowbro thanks to her Water-Type empathy, but she didn’t want to focus on it for fear of a migraine and an altered state of mind. Thankfully, during her training, she had found that if she focused on a task, others' emotions wouldn’t cause her to act too differently, unless they were extremely potent.

Naka expected healing and disruption moves. Naka commanded, briefly forgetting that Mason was watching through the camera on her phone within her jacket’s breast pocket. “Silenus, Hattie, together, Throat Chop and Psychic Noise, Miltank.” She knew that the Miltank were either the main sweepers or were the “clerics” of the battle. She had to make sure that Miltank was put down for good, she didn’t want the Miltank to use Milk Drink on herself or any other sound moves.

“Miltank, Swagger. Slowbro, Iron Defense.” The lady commanded, the Miltank trying to sidestep the sudden chop from Silenus’s forearm and the strange and unpleasant psychic sound waves. However, she was hit by both, coughing and whining as her throat was hit, and her ears rang. She felt strangely blocked, but she shook her head.

Instead of using Swagger on Naka’s Pokémon, the Miltank turned and used Swagger on the Slowbro instead, as the Slowbro toughened up his physical defenses by hardening his body. Naka’s eyes widened as the Slowbro - who held some resentment for this - grew stronger in power but wasn’t confused. Which meant…

The Slowbro had Own Tempo. Knowing what the Miltank was going to do in beefing up the Slowbro, she had to get rid of the Miltank first.

“Focus on the Miltank. Silenus, Breaking Swipe. Hattie, Thunder Wave.”

Silenus was closer now to the two Pokémon, swinging his draconic blue tail at the two Pokémon in front of him, slamming them both that disrupted their physical attack’s power. Meanwhile, Hattie sent an electromagnetic wave at the Miltank, which hit as the Miltank was too busy using Swagger a second time, causing the Miltank to shudder from paralysis. However, the Miltank and Slowbro used the same moves again under the lady’s command.

From what Naka could remember, Heal Bell was something Miltank could learn. Not wanting to ruin the chances of the Miltank using it, she pointed her finger at the Miltank. “Silenus, Miltank. Throat Chop. Hattie, Slowbro. Thunder Wave.”

Silenus hopped over to the Miltank after his Breaking Swipe, using his darkened forearm to slam against the Miltank’s throat again, as the Thunder Wave made its mark on the Slowbro and paralyzed him. The lady clicked her tongue, sighing. “I’m sorry, Slowbro, this might be a loss… Miltank, Psych Up. Slowbro, Iron Defense.”

Naka was confused. Why apologize to the Slowbro and not both Pokémon? She also caught the lady looking over worriedly at her Slowbro, and she can feel the Slowbro’s… acceptance? Resignation? This made no sense to Naka. Why was the Slowbro neutral about this? Shouldn’t the Slowbro feel happy that his trainer felt upset for him? Or was there something deeper going on?

She watched as the Slowbro fought through the paralysis and used Iron Defense, maxing out what the Slowbro could for his physical defense. When Miltank tried to use Psych Up, she was suddenly prevented, her body seizing up from paralysis.

Naka shook her head. “Weird, but okay. Silenus, Breaking Swipe. Hattie, Psychic Noise.”

Silenus swiped with his draconic blue tail again, while Hattie made that strange noise towards the Miltank once again. The Miltank was having a hard time standing on both feet, while the Slowbro looked like he barely felt anything.

The lady sighed. “Alright then. Miltank, Helping Hand. Slowbro, Body Press.” Both Pokémon fought through the paralysis enough to use their moves. Miltank clapped her hands, offering the disgruntled Slowbro power as he charged Silenus, body glowing with fighting energy as he swung his tail around.

Silenus was smashed into, and he was thrown across the battlefield. He struggled onto his feet, huffing. Naka’s eyes widened and she shook her head. “Damn. Silenus, all out. Frenzy Plant. Hattie, Life Dew.”

Silenus, with his body glowing from Overgrow, slammed his glowing fists into the ground, thorny vines surging forth to slam into the Slowbro, dealing a massive blow. Hattie then covered themselves in healing water, healing them both.

The Slowbro was thrown back, struggling to get back up. The Miltank cleared her throat, finally able to use some sound moves. “Miltank, Heal Bell. Slowbro, Slack Off.”

The Miltank played a sweet tune, her singing sounding like that of a bell. Their paralysis was cured, and Slowbro rested on the ground, healing a portion of his damage. Naka groaned.

“Oh boy. Hattie in front of Sceptile and use Thunder Wave. Miltank.” Hattie hopped forward, shielding Silenus with her body as she sent that electrical wave at the Miltank again. It hit, but the Miltank wasn’t locked up again as she went to use another move.

“Miltank, Psych Up. Slowbro, Yawn.” The Miltank fought through the paralysis and copied the stat changes from the Slowbro, her body glowing and growing tougher and stronger. Meanwhile, the Slowbro yawned at the Sceptile, but it bounced back thanks to the brief shimmering glow from the Hatterene’s Magic Bounce when she shielded Sceptile. In turn, the Slowbro became drowsy.

“Hattie, Life Dew. Silenus, Giga Drain, Slowbro.” As Hattie covered herself and Silenus in healing water, Silenus got up and stood beside the Hatterene, sending a ball of energy towards the Slowbro, hitting, and bringing back the energy it stole. He felt a lot better now.

“Miltank, Rollout. Slowbro, Avalanche.” Naka’s eyes widened as the Miltank came charging in a ball and ice suddenly fell on top of her Sceptile. Silenus jumped back and out of the snow, shaking his head but looking a bit dizzy. Hattie was thankfully spared by the paralysis, the Miltank skidding to a halt.

“Silenus, Throat Chop. Hattie, Calm Mind.” Silenus charged at the Miltank, who was just getting up, slamming her throat yet again to prevent her from using Heal Bell. She fell back, coughing. Meanwhile, Hattie calmed her mind.

The Slowbro fell asleep, and both the lady and the Miltank looked at the Slowbro. Naka’s eyes widened as the Miltank fought through paralysis to use Wake-Up Slap on the Slowbro. Naka had never really witnessed anything like that before. The lady sounded apologetic. “It’s for your own good, Slowbro.”

While Naka would never consider herself doing anything like that, she heard herself in those words. In fact, she used those exact words on Mason all those years ago.

‘It’s for your own good…’ It startled her. Even if the Slowbro wouldn’t have gotten hurt by the attack that much thanks to raising its bulk and the attack being resisted, the Slowbro was resentful against the Miltank and the lady. But after hearing his trainer speak, he grew… complacent again. Resigned.

Naka wasn’t so sure if she was witnessing abuse or if this was some strange relationship she wasn’t privy to. But then…

If she wanted to consider this abuse, what would she consider her treatment of Mason all those years ago…? Scared of losing Mason’s support and idolization, scared of her parents’ disappointment as she was told before she shouldn’t be bossy or overprotective of Mason and thus felt like what she was doing was bad despite thinking it was a good deed she was doing for her brother?

She wanted to banish this thought. She shook her head. “Enough… Hattie, Dazzling Gleam. Silenus, Giga Drain.”

Silenus sent a glowing orb at the Slowbro, while the Hatterene blasted the two Pokémon with dazzling fairy light. Silenus healed more from the Slowbro, and the Dazzling Gleam combined with the Giga Drain knocked out the Slowbro. It was just the Miltank left, hanging on a thread.

The lady sighed, returning her Slowbro. “Miltank, Milk Drink.” The Miltank sat down and sprayed her own milk in her mouth, the sight making Naka feel weird, but the Miltank was now feeling a little better.

“Hattie, Psychic Noise. Silenus, Throat Chop.” Her Pokémon attacked once again, preventing her from healing and curing herself.

“Miltank, Rollout.” The Miltank curled into a ball and slammed into the Sceptile, and he fell back a little. The Miltank charged at him again, but she was suddenly stopped by her paralysis.

“Hattie, Psychic. Silenus, Brick Break.” Hattie sent forth a blast of psychic energy, and Silenus judo chopped her again, but with Fighting-Type energy. Unable to withstand the combined onslaught, the Miltank fell.

The lady returned her Miltank and bowed towards Naka. “Your Sceptile must trust you a lot, taking two very powerful moves at a disadvantage.”

Naka nodded, feeling a little weirded out and not correcting the lady that Silenus took the attacks well because there was an experience gap between even Silenus and Hattie, but Naka returned her two Pokémon either way. “Thanks, I guess.” She watched as the lady moved off towards the side, sending out her two Pokémon and letting the two of them cure and heal each other. The Slowbro went from resentful to feeling… good. Happy. Content.

It made something ugly stir in Naka’s stomach.

Naka’s Silenus the Sceptile & Hattie the Hatterene VS Sailor #1’s Poliwrath & Politoed

Naka’s next battle came as the sailor took the lady’s spot. He grinned at her, giving that battle-hungry look. Something Naka was used to seeing from Ron or herself. She sighed, chuckling as the man pointed at her in his cringe declaration. “Your ascension ends here! Go, Poliwrath, Politoed!”

Naka sent forth her two Pokémon, as well. Just as the four Pokémon hit the field - her Sceptile a little injured from the last fight - the first floor was now in a sudden downpour from the Politoed’s ability. The Poliwrath grunted and flexed, his body shimmering from the water, more so than a slimy Pokémon would shimmer in the rain.

That meant that Poliwrath had Swift Swim. Water Absorb nor Damp would cause the Poliwrath to shimmer that much or look that bolstered in the rain.

It was pretty easy to tell that this was supposed to be a synergistic Rain team set, and these two Pokémon seem to be closer to Hatterene in terms of experience. Despite that, she can feel the Poliwrath’s determination and aggression. This aggression was apparently being felt by the Politoed because - while she was also determined - there was an undercurrent of concern. Naka knew what she needed to do. She commanded her Pokémon at the same time as the sailor.

“Poliwrath, Belly Drum. Politoed, Icy Wind.”

“Hattie, Thunder Wave, Poliwrath. Silenus, Breaking Swipe.”

As the Poliwrath slapped his belly, hurting himself but making himself stronger, Silenus slammed his draconic-infused tail against the two Water-Types, lowering their Attack. The Politoed breathed ice upon Naka’s Pokémon, slowing them down, while the Hatterene slowed the Poliwrath down with a weak jolt of electricity.

Naka didn’t want the Poliwrath - the boost from Swift Swim canceled out by paralysis - to utilize his full power. So, Naka commanded again. “Hattie, Politoed, Thunder Wave. Silenus, Breaking Swipe.”

Once again, Silenus slapped his draconic tail across the two frogs, lowering their physical Attack again while the Hatterene successfully paralyzed the Politoed, halving her speed. The sailor was now getting a bit concerned. “On the Hatterene! Politoed, Encore! Poliwrath, Taunt!”

The shimmering ball from the Politoed succeeded to hit Hatterene, but it bounced back, and the Poliwrath was stopped by his paralysis, unable to utilize Taunt. Naka smirked as the man was irritated that he didn't think about Hatterene having Magic Bounce.

“Silenus, Poliwrath, Giga Drain. Hattie, Dazzling Gleam.” As Hattie fired off a dazzling light on both Pokemon, Silenus sent a yellow-green life-stealing orb at Poliwrath, the attack connecting and restoring Silenus’s energy. Naka was so glad for this healing redundancy, even though her Hatterene was unaffected.

The Poliwrath was starting to see stars from how weak he felt, but he shook his head, slamming his fists together. The man growled. “Politoed, Helping Hand. Poliwrath, Poison Jab!” As both frogs fought through their paralysis, the Politoed clapped her hands for the Poliwrath, whose fist turned purple and he charged at Silenus, slamming his fingers against Silenus’s chest. Silenus groaned, but he was safe from being poisoned.

“Hattie, Dazzling Gleam. Silenus, Aerial Ace, Poliwrath!” Once the Hatterene sent her second Dazzling Gleam, Silenus’s leaf blades on his wrists glowed with flying energy, and he slashed at the Poliwrath, the frog sliding back from the strength of such a move. The overgrown tadpole was panting heavily, shaking his head as he was seeing blind spots now.

“Don’t give up, Poliwrath! Poison jab! Politoed, Helping Hand!”

“Silenus, Protect!” Naka didn’t have time to assess why that tone sounded so familiar and why it was so aggressive. Silenus managed to put up a green barrier, protecting himself from the Poison Jab, the boost failing due to Politoed’s paralysis. Then, the third Dazzling Gleam came from Hattie, burning both Pokemon.

Not only that, but the rain stopped, and the Poliwrath was even more sluggish now thanks to his ability being no longer active.

“Silenus, Giga Drain, Poliwrath. Hattie, Dazzling Gleam!” Silenus sucked in Poliwrath’s energy with a grassy orb, while light dazzled and burned on the opponent’s side of the field for the fourth time, hitting both frogs. The double whammy weakness of Grass and Fairy hit the Poliwrath hard, and he was starting to get woozy as he slammed his fist to the ground, the Politoed feeling concerned.

Naka then paused. The tone of the man earlier reminded her of something in her past. But when the man spoke again, her blood ran cold.

“Now’s not the time for rest! Get up, Poliwrath, we’re not done yet until we win!” While that was supposed to be rousing, the tone was far too aggressive. She could feel the Poliwrath’s concern, frustration, and resentment, but it all melted away to determination. She didn’t know if those feelings were towards himself or the trainer. But, given the Politoed was worriedly glancing between her trainer and her Pokémon partner, Naka realized that this man had a penchant for pushing his Pokémon too hard in a fight.

Just like what she did with her Pichu. Granted, she was ten at the time, and she didn’t know there was a difference between how one cared for a Baby Pokémon like a Pichu or another base form Pokémon like a Shinx. But does that distinction even matter? It was still wrong of her.

The man broke Naka of her reverie as he said his commands. “Politoed, Hyper Voice! Poliwrath, Rock Slide!”

Shaking her head of the memory, she was going to stop this once and for all. “Hattie, Protect. Silenus, Earthquake!”

As Hattie protected herself in her green bubble from every AoE move the three Pokémon threw at each other, Silenus stomped on the ground with his feet, then punched the earth as it headed towards the two Pokémon. The attack was strong, the two Pokémon damaged and trying to stand steady. The Politoed screeched with a mighty bellow, the attack hitting Silenus. The rocks that fell missed Silenus, earning him a grin. Even so, the Poliwrath was knocked out by the Earthquake, unable to stand.

“No no! Poliwrath, get up!” Now, the man sounded like he was scolding the downed tadpole.

He was not getting up.

Naka cleared her throat, causing the man to snap his head towards her. He growled. “Politoed, Surf!”

“Hattie, Life Dew. Silenus, Giga Drain!”

As Hattie healed both herself and Silenus, the Sceptile stole more energy from Politoed. As the Politoed tried to summon water to send forth, paralysis stopped her. Naka sighed. “Hattie, Psychic.” Hattie sent forth a powerful wave of psychic energy, sending the Politoed back and into the wall of the lighthouse’s ground floor. There was no impact cracking the surface of the wall, but the Politoed did look too dizzy to continue.

The sailor was not having it. “Not you, too! Get in there!” The Politoed stumbled into the battlefield, shaking her head, trying to go on, but the concern only grew within her, that much Naka felt. Now she knew where those previous emotions were from. They were all from the treatment of their trainer. It reminded her of how her Pichu had stared at her, eyes full of tears as she couldn’t beat the tougher opponent, staring at her with an expression full of ‘why?’. Naka sighed.

“Politoed, Icy Wind!”

“Silenus, Giga Drain. Hattie, Psychic.” Naka’s Pokémon were faster, the onslaught of energy-stealing and painful psychic waves hitting the Politoed at the same time, causing her to suddenly faint, unable to use Icy Wind.

Gritting his teeth, the sailor returned both his Pokémon, and he walked towards the door. Naka couldn’t help but feel a little concerned. She moved to the stairs, only to look back in confusion and concern. Should she call this in? Make an anonymous report about both trainers on this floor?

She didn’t know, all she knew was that this was concerning and-...

Yeah, what she did back then was bad if seeing all of that as an outsider made her feel gross.

She shook her head, putting her Bluetooth into her ear as she pulled her phone out. She saw Mason, whose excitement had calmed since those first two battles, but even he held that reminiscing look. “Hey, I gotta make a call. I’ll call you back.”

Mason seemed… happy, in a bittersweet way. He just smiled and turned off his camera, so Naka could focus on what she needed to do. Sending the anonymous tip to the Olivine City police about a wellness check on the two trainers’ Pokémon, she gave them the exact physical description of the two trainers and the Pokémon they held, and her findings, saying that she saw the emotions on the Pokémon’s faces and not saying anything about her empathic abilities. She was suddenly sent two videos from Mason, which held the first two battles against those trainers. She smiled, not realizing he would do that, but she sent the videos along with the anonymous tips. She wasn’t so sure if anything would come from it, but she wanted to make sure those four Pokémon were okay.

Once it was over, Naka called Mason back and smiled as he answered just as eagerly as he did before. “That worried you too, didn’t it?”

Naka sighed, nodding. “Yeah.”

“Good. That means you’re not who you were about a decade ago.” Was that… trust she heard?

“Now, continue on with your gauntlet. You got… what? Three floors to go before a break?”

Naka chuckled. “Two, but yeah.” She put her phone back into her breast pocket, the outside camera facing ahead to catch her next battles.

Glitter Lighthouse, 2nd Floor - 2 Trainers
Naka’s Silenus the Sceptile & Hattie the Hatterene VS Gentleman #1’s Noct the Noctowl & Maro the Alolan Marowak

With Naka’s Bluetooth back in her pocket, she took the stairs to the second floor which was shaped like a giant ‘U’, the colors on the ground acting like a pathway leading around and over to a ladder on the other side of the giant wall that extended from the elevator shaft to the center section of this floor. She was sure that the two potted plants near the ladder would have been moved for this event.

Naka met face to face with the first of two trainers here - an older gentleman. He sent his two Pokémon without saying much, his grizzled features showing his determination as he sent out his Noctowl and Alolan Marowak. Naka hummed, looking between the two as she sent out her Sceptile and Hatterene, her Sceptile looking a bit weary from the last fight.

There was a special film around the Noctowl’s eyes, but she couldn’t tell if it was Keen Eye or Tinted Lens just yet. For the Alolan Marowak, she actually couldn’t tell if it had Cursed Body, Lightning Rod, or Rock Head. There wasn’t a good way to tell, but she did have Thunder Wave. If it got redirected, then she knew not to use it for this fight. Plus, Alolan Marowak aren’t known for their Special Attack, as their base spread - according to those battlenuts - were the same as that of a Kantonian Marowak. So, she felt okay to waste a move. Plus, these two Pokémon look to be the same experience level as Hattie.

“Hattie, Thunder Wave, Noctowl. Silenus, Throat Chop, Marowak.” Silenus charged forward and slammed his forearm against the Marowak’s throat, making her cough. Meanwhile, the electricity meant for the Noctowl was redirected and hit the Marowak instead, boosting her power. Naka now knew that the Alolan Marowak had Lightning Rod.

“Marowak, Will-O-Wisp. Noctowl, Feather Dance.” Silenus realized his mistake as the Marowak twirled her bone. He jumped back, using his speed to outrun the eerie fire to get behind Hattie, who jumped forward to the middle of their battlefield. The blast of feathers and the eerie fiery balls hit the Hatterene, which were then bounced back thanks to her Magic Bounce. Noctowl was hit with his own feathers, and the flames hit Marowak, but it did nothing thanks to her typing.

“Heh, Magic Bounce.” The gentleman seemed amused. He smirked. “Noct, Nasty Plot.” The Noctowl thought deviously to increase his power.

“Silenus, Earthquake. Hattie, Protect.” Hattie let Silenus hide behind her as she brought up a green barrier, while Silenus slammed against the ground to make it crack and hit the Alolan Marowak. Naka was personally grateful that there were battlefield sections carved out on each floor and gave the lighthouse more stability and durability to have these hardcore battles happen within.

“Maro, Endeavor.” The Marowak targeted the Sceptile, using a strange power to even out their current energy. The Marowak - once panting from exertion - felt more at ease while Silenus was panting heavily now.

“Hattie, Life Dew. Silenus, Aerial Ace.” Hattie covered Silenus and herself in healing dew while Silenus charged forward at the Marowak with glowing sharp wrist leaves, only to switch targets at the last second and head for Noctowl instead.

“Maro, Ally Switch. Noct, Nasty Plot.” Maro used psychic energy and twirled her bones to suddenly swap their positions, while the Noctowl continued to think deviously. The Aerial Ace ended up hitting the Marowak instead, who took the hit well.

Naka smirked. “Silenus, Breaking Swipe. Hattie, Dazzling Gleam.” Silenus slammed his draconic tail against the Marowak, hitting her into the still flying Noctowl, all while the dazzling light shone on them both, hurting them.

The gentleman scoffed. “Focus on Sceptile. Noct, Moonblast. Maro, Flame Wheel.”

The Noctowl channeled fairy energy and the power of the moon before blasting a beam towards Silenus, and Maro turned into a ball of flame as she rolled towards Sceptile. “Now, Protect! Hattie, Psychic, Noctowl.”

Silenus blocked both attacks, while the psychic energy hit the Noctowl. The Noctowl was now unsteady, as he tried to keep himself upright.

The Alolan Marowak used the momentum to jump back towards Noctowl, landing in front of him. Naka was noticing that there was some attempt at helping each other, but it almost felt lazy? Or maybe just not so synergistic.

“Noct, Roost. Maro, Icy Wind.”

“Silenus, Breaking Swipe. Hattie, Psychic Noise!” The Hatterene jumped in the air and blasted an eerie and strange noise at the Noctowl. As he landed, he wasn’t healing, Roost failing. Meanwhile, as the Icy Wind hit both of Naka’s Pokémon, Silenus managed to use his draconic-infused tail to block some of the damage. He then charged forward, only to lunge for their side.

The Marowak tried to use Flame Wheel, but Silenus beat him to it with a Breaking Swipe, slamming against both Pokémon again. The attack hit both Pokémon, the only Pokémon fainting from it was Noctowl.

The gentleman returned his Noctowl. “Maro, Retaliate.”

Marowak, enraged from her fallen comrade, charged at Silenus and tackled hard. Silenus was sent back, panting.

“Hattie, Life Dew. Silenus, Giga Drain.” While the attack was resisted, Overgrow activating mitigated some of that. Hattie healed both of them while Silenus healed himself, stealing the Marowak’s energy.

“Maro, Flame Wheel.” Thanks to the other two Breaking Swipes, the fire around the Marowak wasn’t very potent. She rolled herself towards Silenus, who tried lunging out of the way, rolling on the ground as he got up on both hands and feet, but the fire wheel was still heading towards him.

“Silenus, Earthquake. Hattie, Protect.” Hattie covered herself in a green barrier, while Silenus slammed the ground with his fist. The earth of the battlefield shook, slamming into the incoming Alolan Marowak. The last leg of the Flame Wheel hit Silenus, making him wince, but the Marowak landed in front of him, panting and exhausted. Then, the Marowak fell.

Naka won.

The gentleman returned the Alolan Marowak, sighing. “Good job. Four more to go before your break.” He grinned, leaving.

Naka sighed, shaking her head. “Alright, yes, four more to go.” She put her Bluetooth back in her ear as she returned her two Pokémon, listening as she heard Mason giggle on the other end.

“That was awwwesome! Though, you really would be better off with Disable or Taunt…”

Naka sighed. “Neither Sceptile nor Hatterene can learn those two moves.”

Mason rolled his eyes. “Whatevs. So, guess what that Marowak reminded me of?”

His cheekiness made Naka cringe. “No, and quit trying to shove the idea of our problems into every opponent we see. Just because the first two were very weirdly coincidental doesn’t mean we should conflate future battles with our problems.” She scoffed.

Mason laughed. “Oh, I barely said anything and you already nailed it. Does that mean you were thinking of it too~?” He teased. “Like, ohhh, how that man tried to make those two Pokémon synergize but it felt like either there wasn’t much there to work with or seemed lazy? Yet, he did try to keep the Noctowl from fainting with the Alolan Marowak. You know, like how you tried to protect me when you had noth-”

Naka groaned in exasperation, shoving her Bluetooth in her pocket to silence her brother’s voice.

… But he wasn’t wrong, even if he was stretching it a little.

Naka’s Silenus the Sceptile & Hattie the Hatterene VS Sailor #2’s Kingler & Audino

Naka approached the last trainer on this floor after taking a left, being the second sailor she ran into on this gauntlet run. The ladder sat pretty in the middle of the end of the hallway on Naka’s left, telling her she was almost done. The sailor sent out the two Pokémon, showing some reservation in his expression as his Kingler and Audino took the field. The Audino had an Audinite within a sailor’s ascot around her neck.

The two Pokémon looked about the same experience level as Hattie, and the Kingler’s outer shell didn’t have a more rugged appearance, which meant the Kingler did not have Shell Armor. He either had Hyper Cutter or Sheer Force. She remembered that Mega Audino only had Healer as the Ability, and Regenerator wouldn’t make sense in a double battle with only two Pokémon on each side. Klutz wouldn’t make sense if the Audino was Mega Evolving anyway, which meant she also had Healer in this base form.

She had to make sure that Audino couldn't heal.

With her two Pokémon on the field, the sailor mega evolved his Audino with a key stone on his own matching sailor ascot. Mega evolution light covered the Audino as the energy surged towards her, making her taller, her ears more upright, growing a fluff on her chest, and her pink pattern becoming a white doctor’s coat with fluffy feet. She revealed herself after the light dispersed, and Naka took this time to command first. “Hattie, Psychic Noise, Audino. Silenus, Giga Drain, Kingler!”

“Audino, Simple Beam. Kingler, Swords Dance.”

As the eerie psychic noise hit the Audino, she sent forth a strange beam towards the Kingler. It changed his ability to Simple, allowing him to gain double the Swords Dance boost while his energy was stolen by Silenus, the Sceptile feeling much better.

Naka felt Kingler was… resigned to this. Not happy, not necessarily unwilling though. Just… accepting that his ability was changed. Did the Kingler not want this? Did they not train for this? The Kingler seemed like he wasn’t keen on having his ability be swapped again, which made Naka feel confused.

Suddenly remembering that Audino could learn Misty Terrain and Psychic Terrain, Naka wanted to make sure Misty Terrain wouldn’t prevent this. “Hattie, Thunder Wave, Kingler. Silenus, Breaking Swipe.”

The sailor got concerned. “Audino, Misty Terrain. Kingler, Wide Guard!”

The Kingler created a rocky barrier that protected them both from Silenus’s Breaking Swipe, even if it had not hurt the Mega Audino, it would’ve disrupted the Kingler’s Attack boost. However, the Kingler was paralyzed as the Wide Guard only protected against multiple-target hitting moves, and then the Audino created a misty field around them.

With the Kingler now successfully paralyzed, Naka grinned. “Hattie, Psychic Noise, Audino. Silenus, Giga Drain, Kingler.”

This same combo of moves hit the same Pokémon as they did before at the beginning of the match, preventing the Audino from healing and stealing more of Kingler’s energy. The Kingler was starting to look a bit ragged, while the Audino seemed angry. Naka can feel that Kingler was… disgruntled. Again. The Kingler felt almost helpless… Like he can’t have a fight on his own without help. It hurt his pride.

Was… Was that how Mason felt when Naka tried to protect him from everything? Including failures?

Naka shook her head as the sailor commanded his Pokémon, also seeming a bit saddened. “Ugh, my Pokémon saved people on a stormy sea, and yet we’re getting beaten here… Audino, Reflect. Kingler, Guillotine, Sceptile.”

Naka’s eyes widened. The Guillotine - however - missed wildly, his shining claw hitting nothing but air, while the sailor’s side of the field was shimmering with Physical-dampening psychic power.

“Kingler, Stomping Tantrum, Hatterene.”

Naka looked concerned. “Hattie, Protect. Silenus, Frenzy Plant, Kingler!”

The boosted earthen power of Kingler slammed into the ground, sending splinters towards the shielding Hatterene.

“Audino, Light Screen.”

The Audino attempted to be faster than the Sceptile, the air around them shimmering. But, the thorny vines of Silenus’s grass power hit the Kingler before the Light Screen managed to take effect. The Kingler was thrown to the side from the vines, unable to get back up.

With Audino no longer feeling blocked, she tried to send a stray Heal Pulse the Kingler’s way, but it didn’t do anything. The Kingler was knocked out.

Strangely, Naka felt relief from the Kingler. Now, she felt like she had a vendetta against the Audino. “Don’t let up. Hattie, Life Dew.” Hatterene healed herself and Silenus again with healing dew, situating herself between Silenus and the Mega Audino, while the Audino turned her head back to the battlefield.

The sailor lamented with a sigh. “Mmm, this… reminds me of how I didn’t save them…”

Didn’t he just say he was a hero? Who helped save people? This was almost infuriating. How could he conflate his failure with that of deluded success, if this contradiction was shedding light as to what really happened?

She froze. That’s exactly what she did. Was this fate telling her about her past? What she had done? About what she was doing now? She just shook her head, not trying to let it distract her.

“Audino, Hyper Voice.”

“Hattie, Protect.”

The voice blasted the green barrier Hattie put up, shielding herself and Silenus partially from the attack.

Silenus shook his head, getting up from his exhaustion. “Silenus, Brick Break. Hattie, Psychic.”

Silenus charged ahead, slamming his forearm against the Audino, breaking her Reflect and Light Screen, while a psychic blast hit the Mega Audino, sending her back.

The Misty Terrain dissipated as the Audino’s form turned back to her base form, unable to get up.

Naka returned her Pokémon, while the sailor also returned his Pokémon. The man walked towards the end of the room that took him down, but not before revealing his Audino and Kingler again to make sure they were okay. The man was caring, the Audino sounded like she was scolding the crab. The crab, however, felt… needy for Audino. Felt like he failed her. Felt hollow without her. This codependency - as Naka surmised - felt awful.

But it reminded her of how she felt with her own brother. She shook her head, ascending to the third floor, not bothering to catch up with Mason.

Glitter Lighthouse, 3rd Floor - 2 Trainers
Naka’s Silenus the Sceptile & Hattie the Hatterene VS Bird Keeper #1’s Xatu & Honchkrow

As Naka climbed up the ladder and made it to the third floor, she was suddenly reminded of how deceptively small this space was. Even though each floor within the lighthouse had vaulted ceilings, it didn’t stop the battlefield from feeling a smidgen smaller than normal, given she was inside the ‘quarter’ section that was sliced out of the rest of the circle with an L-shaped wall.

She was met with the first bird keeper of the tower, with the second one - a woman - resting against a wall, watching. Naka was already shaken from the strange parallels she saw in the other trainers earlier (was it really all that common?), but she seemed thankful that this man might not have any Water-Types, and even more grateful that he seemed like a normal and kind person.

The young man chuckled a little as he saw her come up, a sheepish look on his face. “Ah, it seems you’ve had quite the journey. You’re almost halfway there, don’t hold back.” He said, sending out his two Pokémon. A Xatu and a Honchkrow.

Thankful that this almost felt normal, she sent out her Sceptile and Hatterene. They were already starting to feel the burn of the past four fights, their usage points on their moves starting to get to a little low. She needed to give them an Elixir when they’re done.

She studied the two Flying-Types before her. The Xatu either had Synchronize, Early Bird, or Magic Bounce. Unfortunately, there’s not much she could see just from staring at the bird of whether they would have either of those abilities. The Honchkrow either had Insomnia, Super Luck, or Moxie. Moxie would make marginal sense if they were wanting that additional power boost in knocking out one Pokémon, but Naka realized that might not be a good idea to bring here. Super Luck was a big thought, and this Honchkrow doesn’t seem to be too wired or super tired, so it was likely he had Super Luck. There was a chance that the Xatu had Magic Bounce or Synchronize, so Naka didn’t want to play with Thunder Wave until she was sure of Xatu’s ability and if Honchkrow was close enough.

Judging by the experience level, they were about the same as Hattie’s experience level, maybe a bit more experienced. Either way, she was careful of Roost. “Hattie, Dazzling Gleam. Silenus, Throat Chop, Xatu.”

The bird keeper smirked. “Xatu, Heat Wave. Honchkrow, Tailwind.”

As Silenus rushed to slam his forearm into Xatu, a heat wave escaped the bird. Silenus’s momentum had taken him through, slamming his forearm into the Xatu and sending her back. The Heat Wave also hit Hattie, who brought out a dazzling light and burned the two Pokémon and made the dark crow screech, even though the Honchkrow created wind to make himself and Xatu faster despite the burning pain.

Now that Silenus was in front of Xatu despite the opponent’s increased speed, Naka felt a bit better. “Hattie, Thunder Wave, Honchkrow. Silenus, Throat Chop.”

“Honchkrow, Swagger, Sceptile. Xatu, Ally Switch.”

The electromagnetic wave surged forth, but then Xatu had teleported the two birds around. Sceptile’s Dark-Type attack hit the now swaggering Honchkrow, making him confused as he grew stronger, but the attack did nothing. The Thunder Wave bounced back from Xatu, as it went back to Hatterene, paralyzing her.

Naka sighed, now wishing she hadn’t done that. “Hattie, Aromatherapy. Silenus, Breaking Swipe.”

Silenus tried to swing his tail, but hurt himself in his confusion, all the while Hattie fought through paralysis and cured herself of paralysis. Naka was really hoping Aromatherapy can cure confusion, but they’d just have to ride it out.

That’s when she got an idea. If Silenus was paralyzed, he would be saved from hurting himself. He seemed pretty deep in confusion as well, which only made her wonder if he’ll be confused for a long while. But… it also wouldn’t be good. Either way, she continued on as the bird keeper commanded his Pokémon.

“Xatu, Flash, Sceptile. Honchkrow, Quash, Hatterene.”

“Silenus, Breaking Swipe. Hattie, Thunder Wave.”

As the Sceptile tried to use Breaking Swipe again, only to hurt himself yet again, the Honchkrow kept Hatterene from moving with his dark power and Xatu flashed Sceptile’s eyes, making it harder for him to hit his targets. Finally, the Hatterene sent forth a Thunder Wave last. Still, it hit the Honchkrow now, paralyzing him and mitigating his Tailwind on himself.

The bird keeper narrowed his eyes in thought. “Xatu, Air Slash, Sceptile.”

Naka commanded her Pokémon too. “Silenus, Breaking Swipe. Hattie, Life Dew.”

“Honchkrow, Sucker Punch.”

Naka winced as she saw her Silenus take both a Sucker Punch and an Air Slash, thankful that Life Dew was in effect in the midst of those two attacks. Silenus slammed his draconic tail against the two Pokémon, lowering their Attack. The Tailwind had petered out thankfully.

Naka just hoped Silenus could continue to exist with this confusion. “Hattie, Life Dew. Silenus, Breaking Swipe.”

The bird keeper’s eyes narrowed again, confused as to why Naka did the same moves again. Unfortunately, Quash was a no-go. “Xatu, Air Slash, Sceptile. Honchkrow, Comeuppance.”

The Life Dew helped to keep Silenus partially awake as the Breaking Swipe hit the two Pokémon again. The Air Slash hit, and then Honchkrow let loose a powerful dark aura that blasted Silenus back. He was panting, and he looked like he was about to come out of the confusion. Naka hummed. “It’s okay, Silenus, we’re almost done. Hattie, Dazzling Gleam. Silenus, Protect.” Silenus fought through the confusion to create a green barrier around himself.

“Xatu, Air Slash. Honchkrow, Sucker Punch.”

The dark punch from the Honchkrow’s wing hit first (and Naka was deeply thankful that Hattie’s Fairy-typing resisted Dark-Type moves to make the hit neutral), and the Dazzling Gleam happened anyway. She was hit by the Air Slash afterwards, the blinding light burning the two Pokémon and the Honchkrow was starting to get a bit uneven in the air.

“Hattie, Life Dew. Silenus, Giga Drain.”

The attack was resisted, but with how low in energy Silenus had, Overgrow made the Giga Drain stronger, draining more energy from the Honchkrow while the Life Dew healed Silenus more. He looked a bit better now.

“Honchkrow, Haze. Xatu, Roost.”

While Honchkrow reset everyone’s changes with a black mist, Xatu landed and healed a little.

Naka smiled. “Silenus, Throat Chop. Hattie, Dazzling Gleam.”

“Honchkrow, Sucker Punch, Hatterene. Xatu, Psychic, Sceptile.”

The Honchkrow, panting, hit Hatterene again before she could get off a Dazzling Gleam, making her cry out in pain. Thanks to being more bulky, she managed to handle the critical hit, her attack continuing unimpeded. The Throat Chop landed on the grounded Xatu, while the light that shone burned them both.

Both Pokémon fainted, which had Naka feeling bittersweet about this win. They needed to focus on healing themselves in the next fight.

She smiled as they returned their Pokémon and the bird keeper gave her some well wishes, the next bird keeper meeting her right after.

Naka’s Silenus the Sceptile & Hattie the Hatterene VS Bird Keeper #2’s Delibird & Skarmory

Her next battle had her go up against another bird keeper, a young woman this time, who approached her. She sent out her Delibird and Skarmory, which had Naka grimacing in concern. She sent forth her Hatterene and Sceptile, humming. The two birds were around Hatterene in terms of experience, and the Delibird seemed less wired than others she’s met before, which meant this Delibird didn’t have Vital Spirit or Insomnia, so she likely had Hustle. From this distance, she can’t tell if the Skarmory had a film over his eye, but Naka was sure he had Sturdy or Weak Armor as the armor looked scarred. There was still a chance he had Keen Eye though.

Naka commanded her Pokémon. “Hattie, Life Dew. Silenus, in front.”

As the Hatterene went to manifest water, the bird keeper commanded his Pokémon. “Delibird, Fake Out. Skarmory, Iron Defense.”

“Silenus, Protect.”

The Fake Out hit the green barrier, then it fizzled away as Hattie healed them both with Life Dew, and Skarmory toughened up his defenses.

“Hattie, Life Dew.”

The Hatterene continued to heal them both, the bird keeper wanting to put on the pressure quickly. “Delibird, Brave Bird, Sceptile. Skarmory, Taunt.”

As the Delibird charged forth with flying energy, Skarmory also taunted ahead. However, Silenus zipped around and behind Hatterene. “Now, Frenzy Plant.”

Vines surged up from the ground, capturing the Delibird mid-lunge. The flying energy did cut through some of the vines, but not all. It was resisted, but it still hurt, and now Silenus was panting behind the Hatterene. The Taunt had hit the Hatterene instead, bouncing it back, forcing the Skarmory to use attacks. “Hattie, Thunder Wave, Delibird.”

“Delibird, Rapid Spin. Skarmory, Body Press.”

The Hatterene surged forth an electrical wave that hit the Delibird as they spun around to free herself of the vines and get faster. Meanwhile, the Skarmory flew high into the air and dove down, body filled with fighting energy as he slammed against the Hatterene, who moved in such a way to take the hit for Silenus.

She took it well, thanks to her double-typing, and even the little Rapid Spin that hit her didn’t really hurt her too badly, even if that was the hardest-hitting Rapid Spin she ever felt (there wasn’t much of a high bar anyway).

“Now, Silenus, Brick Break. Hattie, Thunder Wave, Skarmory.”

“Delibird, Avalanche. Skarmory, Steel Wing.”

Silenus slammed his forearm against the Delibird, who then tried to cover Silenus in icy rocks and snow in retaliation, but the move missed. Meanwhile, Hattie had hit the Skarmory with a weak jolt of electricity, even as she cried out from being hit by a super-effective Steel Wing.

Naka hummed. “Hattie, Life Dew. Silenus, Brick Break, Skarmory.” Turning on his heel, Silenus charged at the flying steel bird, slamming his forearm against his metal shell while the water healed both him and Hatterene.

“Delibird, Brave Bird, Sceptile. Skarmory, Body Press, Sceptile.” Unfortunately, while the Delibird wasn’t impeded by the paralysis, the Skarmory was. And the Delibird completely missed Sceptile, whizzing right overhead.

Naka smirked, as she noticed the Skarmory had recovered from being taunted. She waited.

“Skarmory, Roost. Delibird, Brave Bird, Sceptile.”

“Hattie, Dazzling Gleam. Silenus, Earthquake.”

“Wait-!”

As the Skarmory landed to heal and the Delibird had gotten paralyzed and fell to the ground, Sceptile slammed the ground and the battlefield shook, hurting both birds. The Skarmory tried to stay upright and the Delibird tried to stand up, even as the light burned both birds. They managed to get back up, and Naka smirked.

“Silenus, Frenzy Plant, Skarmory. Hattie, Dazzling Gleam.”

“Skarmory, Protect. Delibird, Destiny Bond.”

Skarmory tried to put up a green barrier, but was paralyzed. Vines surged forth, and while Skarmory resisted it, he didn’t focus on his Special Defense. It hit hard, and so did the Dazzling Gleam hitting both Pokémon again. The Skarmory tried to keep standing, even after he was thrown around by the vines and burned by fairy light, but he landed on the ground, tired and unable to get up.

The Delibird, however, fought through the paralysis to tie her fate with Hattie’s. As the fairy light burned her and she fell, so did Hattie.

Silenus was the only one standing. Naka chuckled, sighing. “Wow, that was close.”

Floor 3, Exterior - Break

Naka smiled as she thanked the bird keeper for that fight and left, going up another ladder to the fourth floor to be met with a very spacious three-quarters section of the lighthouse. She then looked out of the open window, seeing the view and the peril that would be if she fell. She went down the ladder that was there, making it to the outer section of the third floor - a balcony-like section that sat on top of the main section of the building, squaring off the lighthouse part of the tower with an open doorway that led to the three-quarters section of the third floor. She sat there, mentally tired, and her Pokémon very exhausted.

Since this was the break zone, she sent out her two Pokémon, giving Hattie a Max Revive, spraying Silenus with a Max Potion, and giving them both Max Elixirs. She stood there, leaning against the railing as the wind blew past her. She remembered that Mason was still watching, so she put in her Bluetooth.

“So, that was an interesting few battles.” Naka said, and she could hear Mason chuckling.

“Indeed it was. I thought that Skarmory was going to continue staying up.”

Naka hummed. “Yeah… But now, I’m starting to get concerned. Most of those Pokémon were around Hattie’s experience level. Which means that we’ll be battling Pokémon whose experience level is between Hattie’s and Silenus’s experience gap.”

Mason didn’t say anything aside from humming in acknowledgment, so they just stayed there, resting as they took a break, looking at the seas and the port city that was Olivine. It felt nice.

She caught sight of the Whirl Islands ahead, and she chuckled. “Oh yeah… There was this giant Blastoise that slept deep in the waters of Yellow Rock Isle’s waters. Me and a bunch of other people fought it, and one of my friends caught it. She ended up giving it to me for research purposes, and I held it for her for a time before she wanted it back. Then, we went to Red Rock Isle for the Whirl Cup and I won.” She smirked, feeling her brother’s awe in his coo. But then the smirk faltered. “But… because I was gifted by the sapphire-whatever, I can feel the emotions of Water-Types…”

Mason hummed. “Uhm… Are you… alright?”

Naka chuckled, glad he was showing some concern for her plight. “At first, their emotions drowned out mine and I started becoming influenced by their emotions. The more I fought the feelings, the harsher the migraine I got and the less I could control myself. I think I sort of got it down, I just can’t think about it so much. It doesn’t rattle me anymore like it used to, but I already sort of struggle with coming to terms with my own feelings.”

“Sooo… You’re sorta fine now.” Mason concluded, making her chuckle.

“Yeah.” They sat there for a bit longer, sharing some pleasant sighs to the wind and comfort that this sea breeze brought. Well, Mason couldn’t feel it, but she did hear him sigh when she did, copying her.

Naka hummed, looking back at her two Pokémon. They were stretching and looking at her eagerly, looking pumped. “Seems like they’re raring to go again. I’ll talk to you later.” She said, pausing as she held the Bluetooth against her ear.

“Talk to you later.” She could hear Mason smile, and then she pocketed the Bluetooth.

Now… It was time to continue on after having fifteen minutes to themselves. She heard a whistle from the fourth floor, so she returned her Pokémon and climbed up the ladder against the outside wall of the tower to get in to the spacious three-quarters section of the fourth floor, readying herself for her three battles as she sees three trainers: a gentleman - the second one so far - a lass, and a black belt.

Glitter Lighthouse, 4th Floor - 3 Trainers
Naka’s Silenus the Sceptile & Hattie the Hatterene VS Gentleman #2’s Arcanine & Togekiss

The gentleman came forward as Naka came in from the ladder through the window to battle within the three-quarters section of the fourth floor. Sending out her Sceptile and Hatterene, the gentleman sent out his two Pokémon: an Arcanine and a Togekiss.

As soon as the Arcanine was sent out, his imposing glare and rousing roar caused Naka’s Pokémon to shudder and take a step back. It was obvious this Arcanine had Intimidate. As for the Togekiss, she didn’t know if he had Hustle, Serene Grace, or Super Luck. Those with Hustle would take advantage with physical moves, while those with Serene Grace would take advantage of moves with secondary chances. Super Luck would take advantage of moves with heightened critical hit ratios, but Togekiss’s learnset didn’t include very many of those from what Naka could remember.

She also noticed how bulky these two Pokémon were, so this was going to be a long-drawn out fight. Plus, they do look a bit more experienced than her own Hatterene.

But, this also meant that she can use status moves against them. Unfortunately, her Sceptile would have to just do his best given his physical attack was lowered, a little rattled by the Intimidate. Considering these two bulky Pokémon weren’t too fast though, Naka knew she had the speed advantage. “Silenus, Aerial Ace, Togekiss. Hattie, Thunder Wave, Togekiss.”

“Arcanine, Bulldoze. Togekiss, Thunder Wave.”

The Togekiss targeted the incoming lizard, the Grass-Type’s leaf blades shining with sky energy as he slashed at the Togekiss, but the Arcanine slammed the ground and hit both of Naka’s Pokemon. The Thunder Wave also hit since he was so close, which had Sceptile stepping back and gritting his teeth. Thankfully, the distraction caused Togekiss to get hit by Hatterene’s Thunder Wave.

“Hattie, Thunder Wave.” The Hatterene sent another electromagnetic blast towards the Arcanine.

“Arcanine, Iron Tail. Togekiss, Air Slash.”

“Silenus, Protect.”

Silenus fought through the paralysis to create a shimmering green barrier, protecting him from the two attacks as the Arcanine slammed the shield with a steel tail and slashing wind came from the Togekiss after he fought through his paralysis. The Arcanine was hit by the Thunder Wave, now paralyzed, as well.

“Silenus, get back, Earthquake! Hattie, Protect!”

“Arcanine, Protect. Togekiss, Ancient Power, Sceptile.”

Sceptile began running back to his side of the field, his fist glowing with earthen energy as he jumped, only to slide onto the floor as the paralysis prevented him from attacking. Arcanine’s shield shimmered into nothingness, and the Togekiss manifested rocks to fire at the Sceptile. With Silenus’s closer proximity, Hattie jumped forward and used Protect, the rocks smashing against the barrier.

“Hattie, Aromatherapy. Silenus, Breaking Swipe.” She was concerned that the Arcanine knew some physical moves that were super effective, and she wanted to make sure his attack was weakened, as well. As the soothing smell permeated the area around the team and healed Sceptile of his paralysis, Silenus charged at the Arcanine, his draconically glowing tail slamming into the Arcanine and lowering his attack, while the attack did nothing to the Fairy/Flying-Type.

“Arcanine, Crunch. Togekiss, Air Slash.” The Arcanine bit down on Silenus’s tail after he was hit with it, and Togekiss sent forth another slash of air that hit Silenus. He roared, but continued to stay standing.

“Hattie, Life Dew.”

“Arcanine, Iron Tail. Togekiss, Ancient Power, Sceptile.”

“Silenus, Protect.”

The healing water healed both herself and Silenus, while the Sceptile protected himself with a shimmering barrier as the Iron Tail connected with the barrier. However, the Togekiss paused, unable to move from paralysis.

Naka watched as the gentleman looked like he was trying to think of something to break this stalemate. Naka could theoretically beat the gentleman through grit and tenacity by playing the long game, but that wouldn’t bode well with the rest of the matches she’s supposed to have today. The Togekiss’s set was something she’s heard about on the tournaments she’d listen to, where the Togekiss would paralyze and flinch the target into submission, while having moves that covered their weaknesses. Considering the Arcanine had Intimidate, that meant the Togekiss might have a redundancy in Charm to further weaken Naka’s team.

The Arcanine looked to be a bulky physical set, so she had to take that into account. Only that of Brick Break, Throat Chop, and Aerial Ace were good against Arcanine - especially Earthquake - but none of his attacks aside from Aerial Ace were good against the Togekiss. Then again, his bulk seemed to be made for special attacks. Meanwhile, Hattie’s Psychic and Psychic Noise were the only ones that were neutral against the other two while Dazzling Gleam was neutral against Togekiss.

Naka needed to get rid of the Togekiss first as it was the most annoying, and then they could focus on the Arcanine.

“Focus, Togekiss. Silenus, Earthquake. Hattie, Protect!” Silenus ran back to his side of the field, then smashed the ground with his fist, just as the Hatterene jumped in front of him and used Protect.

“Arcanine, Protect. Togekiss, Charm, Sceptile.” The Arcanine and Hatterene protected themselves from the Earthquake, while the Togekiss went in for a Charm. The hearts went for the Sceptile, but the Hatterene was in the way again, the hearts smashing against the barrier.

“Hattie, Dazzling Gleam. Silenus, Earthquake!” Hattie jumped back and sat atop the large Sceptile’s back, balancing as the Earthquake was sent forth by Sceptile’s fist making contact with the battlefield, protecting Hattie from the attack as she sent forth a dazzling light.

The gentleman was starting to sweat, feeling the pressure. “Arcanine, Iron Tail! Togekiss, Air Slash!”

Taking the Ground-Type hit, the Arcanine charged forward, only to trip from paralysis. The Togekiss also was unable to make that deciding flap for Air Slash, his body faltering in the air. They were both hit by the Dazzling Gleam, which burned. Naka was starting to realize that the Arcanine needed to be their concern right now.

“Arcanine, Temper Flare. Togekiss, Aura Sphere.”

The Arcanine stood up and roared mightily as flames surged around him from how frustrated he was that he couldn't land a hit. He charged forward, but was still slow.

“Silenus, Earthquake. Hattie, Psychic. Focus, Arcanine.” The Arcanine continued to charge as Silenus smashed the ground once again. Hattie still stood on top of the Sceptile, the Aura Sphere being made by the Togekiss was flung at them. However, the Aura Sphere wouldn’t make it in time as the second Earthquake and a strong Psychic had the Arcanine stumble, the Fire-Type freezing from paralysis once again.

The Aura Sphere hit the Sceptile, but he managed to keep himself steady. The Arcanine was on his last legs, and he started to back up.

“Arcanine, Protect. Togekiss, Thunder Wave, Sceptile.”

The Hatterene dropped down immediately, not like her Magic Bounce was needed as the Togekiss failed to use the move due to paralysis.

“Silenus and Hattie, Giga Drain and Psychic, Togekiss.” Taking advantage of the Togekiss’s paralysis, the two Pokémon sent their ranged attacks at the struggling bird-like creature. While the Togekiss was more specially defensive, he was starting to look worse for wear.

“Arcanine, Extreme Speed, Sceptile. Togekiss, Ancient Power, Hatterene.”

“Silenus, Protect. Hattie, Psychic, Arcanine.” The Arcanine was stopped short, having turned into a blur but not able to beat through Sceptile’s shield. Rocks came up and shot forth at the Hatterene, who took the attack while using Psychic, smashing the Arcanine with psychic force. With how far the Arcanine was blasted towards the side, Naka had to wonder if that was a critical hit.

The Arcanine struggled to stay standing, but he then fell, causing the gentleman to return him.

“Togekiss, Aura Sphere, Sceptile.” The Togekiss tried to create a sphere made of qi energy, but failed as he was interrupted by paralysis again.

“Silenus, Aerial Ace. Hattie, Psychic.” The two Pokémon ganged up on the hapless bird, Silenus slashing with aerial energy while Hattie slammed the poor thing with psychic energy.

The Togekiss flapped away and managed to get enough energy to fire off another attack. He tried Air Slash and managed to fire off a cutting gale that hit Silenus, but he took the hit well.

“Silenus, Aerial Ace and get back. Hattie, Life Dew.”

Silenus slashed upwards and used the momentum to jump back, where the Hatterene healed them both with healing dew. The Togekiss fell to the ground. He tried to get back up after landing on the ground, but wasn’t able to keep upright. The gentleman returned the Pokémon, and smiled as he nodded towards Naka. “Excellent fight. I hope you do well against the rest of us.”

With a sweet smile, he left down the ladder that led to the smaller portion of the third floor.

Naka’s Silenus the Sceptile & Hattie the Hatterene VS Lass’s Azumarill & Clefairy

The next opponent was a lass, who skipped up to her spot with a smile. “Hopefully your Pokémon are still able to fight.” She sent out two Pokémon, an Azumarill and a Clefairy. It looked like the Clefairy was holding a purple rock of some kind, like an Eviolite. The Azumarill looked dense, which meant that the Azumarill was likely super muscular and had Huge Power. Meanwhile, the Clefairy’s body shimmered, but Naka couldn’t tell what she had. It might be Magic Guard, but the shimmering effect was even extending to the Azumarill. Was it Friend Guard?

Either way, that meant they had to deal more damage and focus on one of these Pokémon when the time told them to, especially since they looked just as experienced as the last two Pokémon.

“Alrighty, let’s go!”

Naka’s Hatterene and Sceptile moved back to their side of the field, still a bit sore from their last fight. Naka wanted to make sure her Pokémon were fighting fit, but felt something strange from the Azumarill. Was that resentment? She mentally hated being able to feel these emotions now, and she was starting to get tired of feeling like she needed to help. But that’s when she noticed that the Azumarill’s determination flared as the lass called for the Clefairy first. Was that… more hatred or just disdain?

“Clefairy, Charm, Sceptile. Azumarill, Aqua Ring.”

“Single-file line.” Silenus and Hattie dove towards each other, Silenus standing behind the Hatterene, the Charm’s hearts from the Clefairy hitting the Hatterene instead and bouncing it back towards the Clefairy. “Hattie, Psychic Noise, Azumarill. Silenus, Earthquake.”

Hattie jumped up and landed on Silenus’s back as he smashed the ground, while sending an oppressing noise at the Azumarill. The two moves hit, but the two Pokémon were still standing, barely phased by the attack.

“No matter. Azumarill, Belly Drum. Clefairy, Cosmic Power.” While the Clefairy buffed herself up, the Azumarill slapped his belly and increased his physical attack even more so.

“Now, Clefairy, Follow Me. Azumarill, Focus Punch.”

Naka raised an eyebrow and gave an impressed nod, only to smirk as the Clefairy became the center of attention while the Azumarill charged and readied a punch. She wondered if the lass was doing this to make Naka nervous and forget that Follow Me doesn’t work against moves that target both adjacent targets or all adjacent Pokémon. “Nice try. Hattie, Thunder Wave. Silenus, Earthquake again.”

The electromagnetic wave hit the Clefairy, while Silenus smashed the ground and the attack hit both Pokémon and caused the Azumarill to stop charging the Focus Punch.

“Hattie, Thunder Wave, Azumarill. Silenus, Giga Drain, Azumarill.” With the Azumarill a bit closer, the Hatterene threw an electromagnetic wave, while Silenus absorbed Azumarill’s energy with a ball of light.

“Clefairy, Cosmic Power. Azumarill, Liquidation, Hatterene.”

While the Clefairy boosted her defenses again, the Azumarill charged at the Hatterene with a fist full of water to smash against the Hatterene. Unfortunately, paralysis stopped him in his tracks. Naka can just see the frustration oozing from the rabbit.

“Silenus, Frenzy Plant, Azumarill. Hattie, Psychic Noise, Clefairy.” The noisy psychic attack hit the Clefairy, preventing her from using any healing moves. Meanwhile, Silenus smashed the ground and thorny vines surged up to capture and beat down the Azumarill. The Azumarill was thrown back, and the Hatterene stepped in front of the panting Silenus, who was exhausted.

The Aqua Ring did heal the Azumarill a little since it’s been two rounds since he was last hit by Psychic Noise, but he was in danger of being knocked out soon. The lass stomped on the ground and groaned. “Ugh, no no no no! Azumarill, Bulldoze! Clefairy, Moonblast!”

The Azumarill slammed the ground, while the Clefairy released a ray of condensed moonlight as an attack- or tried. She failed due to paralysis. Naka smirked. “Hattie, Protect.” The Azumarill’s attack hit the shimmering force field, the attack barely able to hit Silenus behind Hattie..

“Urgh! Azumarill, Aqua Jet! Clefairy, Moonblast again!” Naka can feel the frustration, but she can feel an aversion towards something. If this Azumarill was made for singles while the Clefairy was trying to prove to him that she belonged in battle beside him, it would make sense why the Clefairy looked determined to fight and looked with concern at the Azumarill, while the Azumarill never gave the Clefairy the time of day, or even got upset whenever the Clefairy was commanded to make an attack.

With a hum, Naka commanded her Pokémon. “Silenus, Protect. Hattie, Dazzling Gleam!” Silenus crawled forward and blocked the two attacks with his own shimmering shield, showing great hustle while Hattie made a dazzling light that hit the two Pokémon. The Azumarill was panting now, frustrated that he bounced back from the shield.

“Hattie, Psychic Noise. Silenus, Giga Drain, Azumarill!” The two Pokémon targeted the Azumarill with that strange psychic noise and the healing grass energy. The Azumarill couldn’t dodge in time with Aqua Jet and was hit by both. He was knocked out, and the lass was about to throw a tantrum as she returned her rabbit.

“URGH! Clefairy, Moonblast!” The Clefairy shot another blast of fairy energy, but the attack ended up canceling as Clefairy was hit with paralysis once again.

Naka smirked. “Finish it. Silenus, Frenzy Plant. Hattie, Psychic.” The thorny vines from Silenus and the psychic onslaught from Hattie beat around the Clefairy until she fainted. The lass took in a deep breath as she returned her Clefairy, not saying a word as she went down the ladder that led to the little section of the third floor.

Naka sighed, shaking her head. Silenus and Hattie came back to their side of the field as the black belt entered the battlefield.

Naka’s Silenus the Sceptile & Hattie the Hatterene VS Black Belt’s Lee the Hitmonlee & Chan the Hitmonchan

Naka watched with some confusion as the black belt man didn’t really move or anything. When Silenus was done panting and shook out his body, the black belt then went for his Pokeballs. “I thought it best to give your Pokémon a very small break. They did well up until now. I’ll make sure to soften you up for the next two battles.” He smirked, sending out his two Pokémon. A Hitmonlee holding a pale circular berry with orange sacs came out beside a Hitmonchan wearing an Expert Belt around his waist. Naka hummed, noticing that the Hitmonlee lacked a trait in his legs that would give him the Limber ability, but she couldn’t tell if he had Reckless or Unburden. But, it would make sense if he had Unburden since he’s carrying a consumable item. As for the Hitmonchan, the Hitmonchan had punched its fists together and they looked tougher than normal, which meant it had to have Iron Fist.

They also looked as strong as the last trainer’s Pokémon, if not a bit stronger. Naka gave a deep sigh as she readied herself. The fighter commanded.

“Hitmon, Fake Out!” The two Hitmons clapped their hands, causing a flinching shockwave that spread out, which Naka was ready for.

“Protect.” The two Pokémon created a field that shimmered and protected them from the attacks.

“Lee, Blaze Kick, Sceptile. Chan, Bullet Punch, Hatterene.”

The two Pokémon charged, with the Hitmonchan being faster as he sped forward and began to hit Hatterene with steely fists. The Hatterene cried out, but she gave a soft smirk. “Hattie, Psychic. Silenus, Breaking Swipe.”

The fiery kick hit Silenus’s draconic tail as Silenus used Breaking Swipe, making him screech in pain as he continued with the attack, hitting both of the Hitmons. Naka noticed that not only did Silenus suffer a critical hit, but he was also burning up. She clicked her tongue, even as Hattie blasted the Hitmonchan back with Psychic.

“Hitmon, standby.”

Naka raised an eyebrow, then realized with some trepidation that they likely both knew Feint. She would have to be careful. “Hattie, Aromatherapy. Silenus, Giga Drain, Hitmonchan.”

As Hattie cured Silenus’s burn, Silenus absorbed energy from the Hitmonchan.

“Sucker Punch.” As Silenus was absorbing the energy from the Hitmonchan, the Hitmonlee dashed forward and kicked Silenus, causing him to pant.

With the Hitmonlee so close though, Silenus smirked that mirrored Naka’s. “Silenus, Aerial Ace. Hattie, Dazzling Gleam.”

“Chan, Ice Punch, Sceptile. Lee, Wide Guard.” As Silenus’s cutting Flying-type blade hit the Hitmonlee, the Hitmonlee created a transparent rocky barrier with a stomp to the ground, forming it between the Hatterene and his friend, blocking the Dazzling Gleam, all the while the Ice Punch landed on Silenus.

Naka hummed. “Hattie, Life Dew. Silenus, Breaking Swipe.” Silenus twirled about with a draconic tail, hitting both Pokémon as he made it back to Hattie’s side, getting healed by her as she also healed herself.

The black belt’s eyes narrowed and he huffed. “Lee, Axe Kick, Sceptile. Chan, Fire Punch, Sceptile.”

The two Pokémon came in, the Hitmonlee jumping high before landing with an outstretched leg on Silenus, while the Hitmonchan punched him square in the chest with a fiery fist. The pincer attack caused Silenus to hit the ground, panting as the Hitmonchan’s punch was really strong. It was like getting hit by one of Naka’s Infernape’s punches, but much worse thanks to the Expert Belt and the critical hit.

Silenus tried to get up, his body shaking. His body glowed with bright green energy as Hattie used another application of Life Dew, saving him from the brink of fainting. He was also confused, the room swaying.

Naka gave a sigh. “Silenus…” Naka didn’t say anything else, even though she should finish up the command. But she did that to mess with the black belt’s head. Would she call for Protect, or for an attack? Should he go for Feint, Wide Guard, or Sucker Punch? She was also using his courtesy against him.

She smirked, as she spoke again, and the black belt decided not to wait since the Hatterene had already made her third application of Life Dew. “Lee, standby. Chan, Fire Punch.”

The Hitmonchan came in with a fiery punch, only for Naka to finally make her command. “Protect.” The Fire Punch was about to hit, but the Hitmonlee sprung forth, using the power of Feint to carry him into the shield and hitting Silenus. However, while the Feint did hit, the Protect didn’t even get used as Silenus hit himself in confusion, as well as being hit with another Fire Punch.

Naka’s breath was also shallow. She can actually taste defeat, it was so close. “Hattie, Dazzling Gleam. Silenus, Giga Drain.”

“Lee, Wide Guard. Chan, Bullet Punch.” The Hitmonchan charged forward and punched the Hatterene as her attack failed against the Hitmonlee’s Wide Guard, the light fizzling out as it hit the transparent rocks. Meanwhile, Silenus absorbed energy from the Hitmonchan, not wanting the Hitmonlee to use up the energy from that berry. Silenus thankfully got out of his confusion, too.

The Giga Drain boosted by Overgrow did quite a number on the Hitmonchan, making him pant. The man smirked. “Lee, Fling. Chan, Drain Punch.”

The Hitmonlee flung its Liechi Berry to the Hitmonchan. While it was a really weak hit, the Hitmonchan ate it and boosted his Attack, while the Hitmonlee got faster thanks to Unburden.

The Hitmonchan went to punch the Hatterene, but he would quickly find that it failed. “Hattie, Psychic Noise.” The eerie noise made from psychic energy hit the Hitmonchan, the Drain Punch failing as the energy petered out.

“Silenus, Aerial Ace.”

“Lee, Sucker Punch.” The punch hit Silenus in the face, but Silenus slashed the Hitmonlee with a gale-filled blade, making the Hitmonlee stagger back.

“Focus, Hitmonchan. Silenus, Aerial Ace. Hattie, Dazzling Gleam.”

“Lee, Sucker Punch, Hatterene. Chan, Bullet Punch.”

Silenus slashed the Hitmonchan, but the two Hitmons went after the Hatterene, a jab and a series of punches hitting her before she sent forth a dazzling light. She managed to make the attack despite crying out from a critical hit from the Bullet Punch, burning both Pokémon.

The Hitmonlee staggered back again, looking to be tired, so was the Hitmonchan. With their attack lowered by the Breaking Swipes, they weren’t looking so good to continue.

“Hattie, Life Dew. Silenus, Giga Drain, Hitmonlee.” The Hatterene healed herself and Silenus, determined to keep themselves standing while Silenus went to suck the Hitmonlee’s energy.

“Sucker Punch, Lee. Chan, Ice Punch.” The two Pokémon dogged on Silenus again, jabbing him and giving him an icy punch that left Silenus staggering again.

“Hattie, Dazzling Gleam.”

“Lee, Wide Guard. Chan, Bullet Punch.”

“Silenus, Aerial Ace, Hitmonlee.”

The light fizzled out due to Wide Guard’s transparent rock wall again, while the Bullet Punch made contact against Hattie. However, Silenus came from behind and used an Aerial Ace on the Hitmonlee, causing him to take a knee.

He then fell onto his side, knocked out. Naka was panting as the man returned his Hitmonlee, her Pokémon able to focus on the Hitmonchan. “Psychic Noise, Aerial Ace!”

“Bullet Punch!”

The two Pokémon attacked as the Hitmonchan made contact with Hatterene again. She was left panting as she sent forth a Psychic Noise, and the incoming Aerial Ace caused the Hitmonchan to fall.

Hitmonchan was returned, and Naka felt like she could breathe again. The black belt bowed to her, which Naka returned, and he left.

With a sigh, she returned her two Pokémon and went down the ladder that took her to the third floor balcony. She then went through the door, going into the three-quarters section of the third floor, and then climbing up the ladder to the fourth floor’s first-quarter section to continue climbing the ladder to the fifth floor.

Glitter Lighthouse, 5th Floor - 2 Trainers
Naka’s Silenus the Sceptile & Hattie the Hatterene VS Sailor #3’s Quagsire & Salazzle

As she came up the ladder, the floor revealed itself to be similar to the second floor, where there was a wall that extended from the elevator’s shaft to the center section of the room.

In front of her stood the third sailor of this gauntlet, and she sent out her Pokémon. They were both exhausted, so Naka wanted to make sure they healed up plenty from this fight. The sailor gave a grin and sent out his two Pokémon - a Quagsire and a Salazzle. She can feel the Quagsire’s own inadequacy at her ability but she feels content and determined. Finally, a Water-Type that didn’t have something extra.

Naka hummed. “Silenus, Giga Drain, Quagsire. Hattie, Life Dew.”

“Salazzle, Fake Out. Quagsire, Yawn. On the Sceptile.”

While Silenus and Hattie were healed by the dew, Silenus flinched from Salazzle’s attack. The Yawn went to hit the Sceptile, but the Hatterene bounced in the way, the Yawn bouncing back and making the Quagsire yawn.

“Hattie, Life Dew. Silenus, Giga Drain, Quagsire.” With Hattie healing themselves with dew again, Silenus drained more from the Quagsire. These Pokémon looked to be quite strong, a little less experienced than that of Silenus. Still, that Quagsire took that Giga Drain like a champ. Naka’s eyes widened at the sheer bulk of this thing.

“Focus on that Sceptile. Quagsire, Swagger. Salazzle, Toxic.”

Naka clicked her tongue. “Single-file.” Silenus stood behind Hattie a bit better. Swagger and Toxic bounced back, confusing and increasing the attack of Quagsire before she fell asleep while the Toxic splashed all over the Salazzle. Naka was a little disappointed that the Salazzle didn’t get poisoned, but it was clear that the Salazzle had Corrosion because even she freaked out when splashed with it, only to smile when she didn’t get sick.

The Quagsire likely didn’t have Water Absorb as her partner didn’t know a Water-Type move, and the air didn’t feel damp so she likely had Unaware. Naka surmised that as much.

Which meant that if her Sceptile was affected by that increased attack and tried to attack the Quagsire, it would be like Sceptile wasn’t affected by it at all.

With a hum, she wanted to get rid of that Quagsire and fast, but first she’ll put the pressure on the Salazzle. “Silenus, Earthquake. Hattie, jump and use Life Dew.” Hattie jumped on Silenus’s back again and healed him, while Silenus smashed the earth.

“Protect, Salazzle.” The Earthquake hit the shimmering shield the Salazzle made, while the Quagsire was asleep whilst she was damaged, but she didn’t really stir. Unfortunately, she woke up quickly, standing back up and shaking her head, but still being dizzy from the self-inflicted confusion.

Naka smirked. “Silenus, Earthquake. Hattie, Psychic, Quagsire.”

“Salazzle, Protect. Quagsire, Avalanche.”

Seemed they were trying again, as the Protect succeeded on its second consecutive try and the Quagsire managed to stay upright, even as she was being hounded by shifting earth and powerful psychic forces that lowered her Special Defense. She sent forth an Avalanche, snow falling down on the two Pokémon. Hattie managed to jump out of the way, but the poor Sceptile was suddenly covered with snow.

The empowered Avalanche from this Quagsire dealt more damage than that Poliwrath a few floors down ever did. When Silenus came out of the snow, he was panting, legs shaking.

Naka sighed. “It’s alright, Silenus, we’re doing good. Giga Drain, Quagsire. Hattie, Life Dew.”

“Quagsire, Protect. Salazzle, Sludge Wave.”

The Quagsire tried to fight against the confusion, but ultimately hit herself in confusion and the Giga Drain sapped most of her energy, so when the gross wave of sludge did hit the two Pokémon, the Life Dew healed them well up to full stamina before the sludge hit. While they were both weak to the attack, they managed to stay standing.

The sailor gritted his teeth as he tried again. “Quagsire, Earthquake. Salazzle, Protect.”

“Silenus, Earthquake. Hattie, Protect.”

Silenus took the Earthquake rather well, but the Quagsire couldn’t handle Silenus’s Earthquake. She tried to stay standing, but she tripped over her own feet and collapsed on the ground, knocked out. Silenus shook off the damage, panting a little.

With the Quagsire now returned, their only concern was the Salazzle.

The sailor, having felt the pressure on Salazzle’s side, now realized he wouldn’t be able to win. So, he made sure they were weakened for their last battle. “Salazzle, Sludge Wave!”

Naka huffed. “Silenus, Earthquake. Hattie, Protect!”

While the Salazzle was busy trying to quickly pull off her attack, the Sceptile was faster and smashed the earth, the shifting earth hurting the Salazzle and preventing her from using the Sludge Wave.

The sailor clicked his tongue and returned his Salazzle, heading back down the ladder and leaving Naka with her last opponent. With a sigh, she returned her Pokémon, and walked around the corner.

Naka’s Silenus the Sceptile & Hattie the Hatterene VS Gentleman #3’s Wooly the Ampharos & Ruby the Klinklang

As Naka walked around the bend, she saw the ladder, sitting close to the center beam’s side and protected with some energy shields, while a battlefield like all the other ones inserted into the floors rested beside it, and the gentleman - her third this gauntlet - stood there before her.

He gave a kind smile, before chuckling. “My my, you’ve left quite a thunderous impression in your wake.”

Naka gave a sheepish chuckle as she likely realized all those Earthquakes and Frenzy Plants had likely still reverberated throughout the lighthouse despite the shock absorbers and suspensions. “Haha, whoops.”

The old gentleman held the two Pokeballs in his hand as he shook his head, the other hand on his cane. “No need to feel bad. It shows you’re serious about this despite the reward. I hope you can keep that momentum.”

He sent out his two Pokémon, which had Naka’s face falling as soon as she saw what they were. A Klinklang and an Ampharos stood there, the air between them distorting like it would with heat due to their connection. Naka surmised that this Ampharos must have Plus and the Klinklang Minus. What concerned her wasn’t the connection, but the Mega Stone that sat embedded within the Ampharos’s tiara and it looked electromagnetically stuck to her head.

Naka gulped as she sent out her two Pokémon, who still had quite a lot of energy left. When they both saw the Mega Stone however, they looked back at Naka with a concerned look before looking back at their opponents.

The gentleman grinned. “Ahhh, and to think you have a counter for me~. Even your Pokémon look concerned~.” It was almost grating with how he sang that just with tone, even though the timber in his voice tried to make it sound like honey.

“Magnet Rise. Light Screen.”

The two Pokémon obeyed, and Naka can tell their experience level was about as close to Silenus’s. She shook her jitters away and commanded them. “Focus on Klinklang. Silenus, Brick Break. Hattie, Thunder Wave.”

As the Ampharos created a shimmering light field around their side of the field, the Klinklang created a field charged with electromagnetic energy that defied gravity, making it float a foot off the ground.

Silenus lunged towards the Klinklang, smacking it with his glowing forearm and breaking the Light Screen. The Thunder Wave also hit the Klinklang, Silenus using his momentum to leap backwards.

“Cotton Guard. Gear Up.”

The Ampharos coated herself in wool, while the Klinklang powered them both up with Gear Up, the gears working in overtime as the power surge traveled through their magnetic link.

Naka realized this was going to end badly. She knew that Ampharos had to be rocking a special set, which meant using Breaking Swipe didn’t matter right now. But, they had super-effective moves, they just had to get rid of this Klinklang first.

“Brick Break, Calm Mind.”

Naka knew that the Klinklang resisted whatever Hattie could throw at it, so might as well beef up her Hatterene for the time being just in case.

Silenus charged forward again, smashing the gears with his forearm. He was a bit peeved that even with two super-effective hits, the attacks didn’t seem to do much. Was the Klinklang hiding its exhaustion?

“Keep at it, Ruby. Wooly, Cotton Guard.”

The Klinklang used Gear Up once again, churning those gears into overtime while the Ampharos covered herself in more wool, protecting herself further. Now, she looked like a giant pillow.

“Again!”

The gentleman was smiling, but it lost its polite edge. “Getting concerned, dearie?” He sounded smug.

Naka groaned, whilst her Sceptile tried again to smash the gears with a Brick Break and Hattie boosted herself more. It really seemed like those gears were impenetrable. Just how much were those gears trained in defense, and just how strong were they? Maybe they matched Silenus in experience or were even better, she couldn’t tell.

“You know, I should let you know I’ve gotten a few Prestige Badges in my time. Aren’t you lucky you get to see a fraction of my tactics?” The old man said, humming proudly to himself. “Ruby, time’s almost up.”

The Klinklang whirred, boosting itself and its partner further with Gear Up. How come it wasn’t paralyzed yet???

Naka’s brow knitted together, huffing. “Silenus, Brick Break! Hattie, match their boosts.”

Silenus smashed the gears again, but it really looked like it was doing nothing. It was always hard to tell with automata if they were exhausted or taking damage like Klinklang. Hattie also got stronger with Calm Mind, but it seemed like the man wasn’t worried whatsoever.

“Ahhh, now it’s time. Wooly.” He called out, and the Ampharos bleated happily. The Ampharosite glowed while the gentleman opened the top of his cane to reveal a Key Stone embedded within. He grabbed the bottom of the cane and pointed the opened top towards his Ampharos like he were a magician, the glow from the Key Stone erupting with energy tendrils to wrap around the Ampharos and transform her. The Ampharosite disappeared as did her tiara, as the light gave her a mane and a fluffy tail, while also making her horns segmented and pointy. As the light dispersed, there were more red spheres in her tail, while the one at the top of her head glowed prominently. The magnetic bond between the two ceased due to the Ampharos’s new ability, Mold Breaker.

Meanwhile, the Klinklang tried to set up Magnet Rise again, but he ended up getting paralyzed.

Naka gulped. “Silenus, Earthquake. Hattie, Dazzling Gleam!”

The gentleman narrowed his eyes before smirking. “Ruby, Electric Terrain. Wooly, Light Screen.”

Just as Silenus smashed the ground, the field was suddenly electrified, boosting all those who were grounded except for the Klinklang. The Light Screen was put up after Silenus made his attack, the sheep being faster than the Hatterene, so the dazzling light barely did anything to the two Pokémon, even with the Ampharos’s weakness. The Earthquake did something to the Klinklang at least, but the Ampharos looked unaffected.

Naka’s eyes narrowed. She let the Ampharos set up with Cotton Guard, so Earthquake would do nothing. Should she order Silenus to move off of the Klinklang and move to the Ampharos? The indecision was clear on her face, she didn’t know what to do.

She shook her head, huffing. “Silenus, focus on the Klinklang for now. Hattie, Dazzling Gleam!”

The ensuing Brick Break finally had Naka see some sort of reaction. The Klinklang was getting tired as it stuttered in its whirring. The smashing of the Light Screen also allowed Hattie to use Dazzling Gleam with great power, burning them with fairy light. The Ampharos however, only grew more determined.

“Wooly, Dragon Pulse. Klinklang, Lock-On.” The Klinklang tried to follow Silenus’s every move, even as Wooly blasted the poor Sceptile away with pulsating draconic energy, but he was paralyzed again.

Silenus wasn’t ready for how hard that sheep hit, and he shook his head as he struggled to stand.

“Hattie, Dazzling Gleam again!”

“Klinklang, Protect. Wooly, Discharge.”

Naka’s eyes widened. “Silenus, Protect!”

She shielded her face as Silenus’s shield came up, and Hattie was left shining the light on their opponents. However, she was blasted with the full force of the Ampharos’s Discharge. She was flung back and smashed into the wall. Naka’s eyes widened.

However, thanks to Hattie’s use of Calm Mind earlier, the attack could’ve been much worse. She pushed herself off the wall - no impact cracks thankfully thanks to how sturdy this lighthouse was - and she hopped back into the field. She wasn’t paralyzed either, but she could barely keep herself standing.

Naka was impressed she survived that, but she had to refocus. Electric Terrain was going to disappear and they needed to get rid of that Klinklang before it brought it back. “Focus, Klinklang. Psychic, Earthquake!”

“Magnet Rise. Dazzling Gleam.”

Silenus was faster as he smashed the earth and hit both Pokémon with the attack. The Klinklang managed to float back up in the air, but not without getting some more damage from that Ground-Type attack, and the Psychic that came at him had it finally stuttering.

The Ground-Type attack seemed to have done something to the Ampharos at the very least, which had Naka wondering if there was an experience gap between the Ampharos and the Klinklang.

Either way, she refocused her efforts. “Again, Brick Break, Psychic!”

“Ruby, Electric Terrain. Wooly, Dazzling Gleam.”

The gears were slammed yet again with Silenus’s forearm, which was starting to grow sore from repeated use. But, the Electric Terrain, as it petered out, was refreshed again. Naka grimaced.

The Psychic did hit home, and the Klinklang hovered uneasily in the air, its balance off-kilter.

Naka realized they were close, only to forget that the sheep had made a bright light. She covered her eyes and heard her Pokémon whine and yell in pain. Naka shook her head and looked ahead. Her Hatterene looked exhausted and like she was about to keel over, and her Sceptile was growing frustrated and panting. Naka huffed.

“Hattie, Life Dew. Silenus, Brick Break one more time!” With one final slam, the Klinklang suddenly fell to the floor into a heap, and Silenus jumped back to be healed by Hattie as she also healed herself.

The Ampharos looked at her fallen comrade and bleated sadly, as if to say ‘thank you’. The gentleman returned the gears, a small smile on his face. “Good luck. You’ll need it. Wooly, Discharge.”

Naka’s eyes widened. “Fuck, Protect!”

Both Pokémon put up their shields as the electrifying blast covered the battlefield, the light so bright she had to cover her eyes again. She shook her head, groaning. “Alright, Silenus, Earthquake. Hattie, Dazzling Gleam!” Hattie jumped on Silenus’s back to prepare for this, even as Silenus’s legs shook.

“Wooly, Dazzling Gleam.”

As Silenus hit the earthen battlefield, Hattie and Wooly covered the area in bright, burning light. Hattie screeched and Silenus hissed, while Wooly gave a disgruntled bleating. The Pokémon looked a bit exhausted, which had Naka realizing they were close.

“Again, Dazzling Gleam. Silenus, Frenzy Plant!”

“Wooly, Discharge!”

Silenus acted first, slamming the ground again as thorny vines surged forth, slamming against the Mega Pokémon. As light burned her, she let loose a torrent of electricity that burned most of those vines, which helped to shield Silenus from some of the blast. Hattie was blasted back by the blast, but Silenus managed to stand despite the pain he was in. He was exhausted though, panting as he stood there, glaring at the Ampharos.

Naka turned her head to see that her Hatterene was knocked out, slumped over against the wall. She gave a soft smile, returning her beloved cleric. “You did amazing.” She whispered to her before putting her Pokéball away.

The Ampharos glared down at the Sceptile, the sheep also panting. The gentleman chuckled, smiling wide as he held out his arms. “Now this… This was an amazing battle.”

Naka couldn’t help but smile back. “Indeed it was.”

The Ampharos sent forth a pulsating draconic blast, slamming the Sceptile back and out of the battlefield. Despite that, his arms and legs shook as he got up, panting as he crawled back to the battlefield. He glared at the sheep, and Naka grinned. “Silenus, Frenzy Plant, once more!”

With a bright green glow from Silenus’s Overgrow, he slammed both fists into the ground, roots flowing out of his arms as thorny vines surged forth.

“Discharge!”

Wooly tried once again to blast away the vines, the electricity actually managing to char a vine or two, but they surged forth relentlessly and slammed against her so hard she flew back. Her form glowed and she collapsed as her usual self, her tiara with her Ampharosite askew on her forehead.

The gentleman laughed heartily as he returned his sheep, bowing to Naka. “What a wondrous display of power! I’m surprised you haven’t given your Sceptile a Mega Stone yet.”

Naka was still in disbelief. She won? The whirlwind of those last moments had her reeling. She gave a relieved chuckle, hugging the Sceptile who bounded back to her happily, nuzzling her cheek. “Hah, yeah, that. I have never found one.”

The gentleman just gave a big grin. “You’ll be surprised. Fate works in mysterious ways. Sometimes, life is not what we want it to be, but what our actions make of it. If you feel like you barely have made any progress in something, keep at it, just like you did with this fight. You didn’t let your indecision prevent you from winning.”

With a flourish of his hat, he walked to get down from the lighthouse, while Naka was still in a state of shock. She sent out her Hatterene, healing her with a Max Revive and giving both of her Pokémon a once over with a Max Potion and a couple of Max Elixirs before returning them.

She ran to the ladder, the shield around it disappearing as she climbed up it to meet her reward.

Glitter Lighthouse, 6th Floor - Light Room
Pet Amphy

She stood there, seeing the aged Amphy, who bleated at her happily, standing there in the middle of the tall blue walls made of lenses that encircled Amphy’s home, which would swivel and turn to give the impression of a real light turning in place. Large window panes encircled the room, with an open door leading out of the lens circle. On the other side of the lens wall were the elevator doors. Naka chuckled, getting on a knee as she pet the Ampharos’s neck. Amphy bleated again, her stubby arm patting Naka’s head, making her chuckle. Amphy’s tail light shone bright, but not so bright where Naka was blinded. Amphy pointed at Naka’s belt and she released her two Pokémon.

Hattie and Silenus stood there, looking quite exhausted yet smiles on their faces. Amphy bleated and cheered for them, her tail wagging. Naka couldn’t help but laugh at how cute the Ampharos was.

Remembering Mason was watching and in the call, she put her Bluetooth back in her ear. She could hear Mason laughing incredulously and cooing at the adorable actions of Amphy.

“Who knew your last fight would be against an Ampharos, too? Holy shit, that was incredible! You really should get a Sceptilite, for real. Awwww, cutie little Amphy~.”

Naka chuckled, rolling her eyes. “Yeah, well. I did actually ask Sceptile if he wanted one. He was content with himself, so he declined.”

“Huh? Really?” Mason huffed, sounding a bit surprised. “I remember he couldn’t stand being weak when we were traveling through Hoenn, though that was after we nearly died going through Fiery Path.”

“Yeah. I was also surprised.” She watched as Sceptile sat down, his tail wagging as the Amphy tried to play with the bristles on his tail.

“Bring up your camera.”

Naka listened, pulling her phone out of her breast pocket and swapping the camera around so Mason could look at her. He laughed.

“Man, you should really relax or something. Take a bath. Your forehead’s all shiny, your hair is all frizzed up to hell and back-”

“Shut up!” Naka groaned, running a hand over her hair, the strands indeed being frizzy and sticking up at random points from what the Mega Ampharos did earlier. Her hand also brushed upon the sweat that had accumulated on her forehead, making her grimace from disgust.

Mason continued laughing, shaking his head. “You’re silly. Anyway, it was fun watching you fight. I should come by to Johto, watch you fight in person.”

Naka rolled her eyes, chuckling. “You better not be hollering at me in the middle of a fight. That’ll be embarrassing.”

Mason laughed. “No promises~.”

Naka groaned, but couldn’t help but smile at her brother’s insistence on being there for her. Did that mean…?

“Also, no, I haven’t forgiven you for that time.” Naka raised an eyebrow and looked back at the serious expression on her brother’s face. It must have been obvious on her face what she was thinking about, which got her flustered. However, the stoicism melted into a kind smile, making her pause. “Buuuut, your actions today make me want to. Keep it up, sis. May we see each other again.”

Naka smiled, shaking her head from the bittersweetness. “See you later…” She then smirked, cooing at him. “My cute li’l bro~.” She grinned, making Mason groan and shut off the camera and hop off the call from sheer cringe. Naka chuckled, putting her phone away as she just relaxed there with Amphy playing some sort of cute game with her Pokémon. Naka chuckled.

“I don’t forgive myself either, Mason… But some day, I hope you will convince me otherwise…”

She looked up and out of the light room, seeing the Wingull and Pelipper fly by, and the Skarmory doing drills from the Olivine Gym.

Today was a good day…

Purchase milk? What? No. He was just...wait a minute. That voice. Could it be?? Squinting and shielding his eyes from the sun he tried to get a closer look, grinning when he realized who it was across the way. "It uh...well, you know! It's going! Try...Why are we still yelling!?" he fumbled for a second to get this Rotom Phone out fiddling with it just a second. Yes. Rather than cross the distance, which would require him to likely trespass, he called her.

Once she answered he nodded, letting the phone go and float in front of him. "There we go. That's better. Jasmine's got all us gym trainers out here, keeping the roads safe and eyes open for anything out of the ordinary. What about you, stranger? Farm life suits you." It was good to see a familiar face. She put him at ease. He wasn't sure what it was, but she did. Floating in the background behind him his Magnemite floated up and down slowly, its attention on their surroundings. He wanted to ask her a thousand questions. But he didn't want to put her off whatever she was doing. Was she working? On a break? Did she own the farm now? Could property be wagered in pokemon battles? That was something to look in to. "Hey, um...is it...am I good to come over there? I mean if not it's cool. I'm just trying to not go to jail right now." He also didn't want to get her in trouble if it could be avoided.

An eyebrow cocked, a sour note in Esther’s expression. Why were they yelling? Why was he asking her? He was the one that initiated a conversation from a league and a half. What was he…Oh! Only a single ring passed before Esther answered her poketch.
“Gym Trainer huh…is that what you’ve been up to? Cool. Farm life? Heh, can you tell? I was raised on a farm ya know? Not Miltank or anything—bug types actually, but…it’s about the same.”

While she’d learned from Naka that Theo was working somewhere in the area, it hadn’t been in the Oblivian’s expectations to encounter him so soon. In fact, she had more expected brush shoulders while on a supply run in Olivine.

“Yea, hop right over the fence. Just be careful to not to startle the Pokémon. You don’t want to see what happens when Mareep stampede.”
Aside from the Miltank the farm was known for, a few Mareep—far more timid and likelier to spook—also inhabited the farm.

“You’ve got good timing, I’m on lunch. By the by, since you’ve mentioned it…did the Gym Leader give you anything to deal with all the Zubat?”
Truth be told, Esther was at a bit of an impasse and she’d take any hints she could get. Zubat? How in the MUK was she supposed to deal with those!? They were nocturnal! That was already an extra challenge, veiled in the dark of night and all, but on top of that, Zubat could fly! None of her previous experience had really prepared her for this. She couldn’t erect a fence or build trap that could be expected to stop an aerial target. But what other options did she have?

Hopefully Theo, or rather, the Gym Leader behind Theo—Jasmine—had already devised some kind of strategy. If not, Esther’s next best plan was…recruit wild Spinarak to weave a giant net over the farm? Enlist Hoothoot to the night guard?

Neither idea felt particularly sound…
