roman godfrey was never one for social events.

as a child, he would be constantly dragged along by his parents, only to scamper off to hide in the grand rooms and read the books he would sneak in his backpack. it felt like a personal hell, it only got better once he made friends there; not the fake friends - the ones who would grin and only speak to him during the fancy events - but real friends, who remembered his name and cared. roman enjoyed the moments he had with his friends, the adventures he had with his friends were something irreplaceable, so once everyone left, roman felt like he was stuck being dragged by his parents again.

after school had finished, with roman (unsurprisingly) graduating as valedictorian, he watched his friends and peer drive away. his parents were kind enough to go on a very long trip in europe and left the keys to their only son, leaving roman in the small town he grew up in while they travelled the world. roman didn't mind, he couldn't complain really, any excuse for his parents to leave him alone was a good excuse. the male had no plans for life, no defined purpose, so he ended up working as a librarian. roman enjoyed helping kids find books, encouraging their imagination and curiosity, and to see the glitter of hope that sparkled in their eyes filled the loneliness that sometimes consumed roman.

the day he received the letter was a weird day. after working at the library, he found the envelope at the porch of his house with the details printed neatly. roman, as mentioned before, wasn't a party person, but for some reason he decided it was a good reason to go. maybe it was for the nostalgia factor, to walk down the halls that was filled with positive memories of his teenage-hood again, or maybe it was for the food, or even to see how his class had turn out after all the years of being apart.

roman dressed himself in the cleanest outfit he could find, something that was classy yet still casual (hopefully) for the reunion. the ride was swift yet nerve-wrecking for him, as his mind raced with terrible social outcomes, it was calming to focus on the pedals of his bike instead of imagining a possible plane crashing into the school building. once he had arrived, unfamiliar faces gave roman a badge with his name and pointed him towards the auditorium. a wave of disappointment crashed over him once he realised none of his friends came, possibly because they were too busy, or maybe they had new lives they would rather live; he couldn't blame them.

once he floated around the sea of people, gripping onto a plastic cup of water and muttering polite "hellos" to strangers who had forgotten his face, roman felt alone again. his heart raced with stress, like a tiny mouse on a wheel, as he decided to take a breath outside. the sound of people happily chatting was replaced with muted silence as roman headed out into the hallway of lockers, the light from the auditorium dimly lit the hallway which was enough for him. his back relaxed into the brick wall as his breath slowly calmed down. a hand ran through his black hair, the touch of his soft locks grounded him in reality as he peeled the sticker tag from his sweater. roman's eyes only stared at the messy hand writing, debating whether or not to rip the sticker up and go home.

It was only a few weeks ago that Kadara had received an online invitation to her high-school re-union. It was about time that they had a get together. Now Kadara was even surprised she was even invited in the first place.
Kadara, especially because of her fathers' businesses, she was more away rather than present which resulted in more absences than anything. However, it was only her last two years that she had them recovered. She managed to stick around for two years. Enough to get herself past it. In those two years, despite all the bad experiences that every high-school brings there was also the good ones. Like for example, her little group of friends that she met prior in one of her fathers' galas. They attended the same school. In fact, it was only because of them she actually considered flying back 'home' to attend this re-union. She even made it a point to surprise them.
The flights she had to catch were booked so abruptly that she had to prepare herself before them, she was dressed very classy compared to other passengers who seemed to only be dressed in simple tees and sweatpants, unlike her. That being said, seeing as she was staying in Dubai already, she had only one flight which was directed to America which added up to approximately 14 hours if not more. It was going to be exhausting but it needed to be done. A few weeks or so in America were not going to harm her. A big break from travelling even and enjoy her loved ones a bit. Boarding late at night, Kadara arrived in the States early in the night the following day which was right on point. She had enough time to drop her luggage down at her old house and get an uber to the school where the re-union was currently taking place.
Upon arrival, her nerves were getting the best of her. She did not know how her friends would react. How Roman would react. They texted one another each and every day when they could and she knew he followed her blogs because she started them for her friends initially. Till the views started blowing through the roof. So the fact she didn't text or blogged anything this past week or two due to preparations would raise some suspicions. However she did reply telling him that something came up and that she was busy.
Her high heels gently tapped with the concrete pavement as she stepped out of her uber. Arranging her orange-red dress with her coat the female slowly proceeded through the cobblestone path that led to the entrance steps and to the main hall. As she walked along the hallway, her mind replayed the usual laughter and loud ruckus that inhibited it during school hours. The shouting and the slamming of lockers. The rushing to get to each lesson on time and the ones that ditched. As much as she hates to admits, she missed it here. She missed the crazy things mini her, Roman, Nico and Tarus used to do in between lessons or during recess. The many nooks and crannies they explored. It had always been a thing of theirs. Adventure was in their blood when they were just little young-lings.
Her stomach was tossing and turning, doing its own gymnastics routine in there as she pondered about the fact that none of them were even here. Nico and Tarus she knew they were a no show as they had stated so and she saw roman writing something about it but she didn't know if he would make a present or not. Especially since she knew Roman and his awkwardness about such gatherings with lots of people. He would rather be in a room with his precious books than interact with people. As she proceeded halfway into the hall, a blonde approached her squealing. She hugged her tightly as she screamed her name which left Kadara in no motion but wide eyed. Kadara did not register who it was until she recognised that sharp harpy like cackle. It was none other than Emily. The back in the day most valued prep. You could say Emily loved Kadara but she did not reciprocate. "Oh hi Em! It's been so long," Kadara tried to sound excited when in reality she wasn't. Emily couldn't have agreed more with her genuine excitement or so she assumed. She handed Kida a sticker which she did not bother to stick on her dress. She did not want to ruin a high quality dress with some sticker glue. No way.
As she was talking to her best gal pal, from behind the blonde's shoulder she noticed a familiar silent, nervous bookworm. Relief washed all over her face as a smile slowly formed on her lips as she recognised his posture. Kadara cut Em's never ending hello, "Excuse me Em, I'll catch up with you soon!"
With that, she side stepped her and her heels proceeded to click against the marbled floor before they halted towards the said male. The brunette bent forward a bit, trying to meet his gaze which was directed towards the same messy sticker she just gotten, knowing very well what was going through that head, "Hey there stranger, bored already?" she mused with her usual dimpled smile and giggle.

as time ticked by, the quiet voice that begged -- plead -- roman to go home was becoming louder. the male wasn't even sure why he came in the first place, it wasn't like he was an all-star jock that his peers adored. he was a mere librarian, stuck in the same place he grew up in. roman's lanky fingers twirled with a loose thread from his dark sweater, unsure how the strand became rebellious and loose in the first place. while he debated on leaving, there was a small sliver of him that wanted to stay, hoping the universe would be kind and allow one of his close friends to show up.

roman was lost in his own world as he continued to fiddle with the loose strand, watching is grow bigger as he continued to play with it aimlessly. the environment around him became nothing more than a blur of noise. however, the male was brought back to reality when he heard her voice.

"hey there stranger, bored already?"

surprised and slightly confused, roman glanced up and noticed a small woman standing next to him. the universe finally listened to him.

"kida," roman managed to sputter out, an awkward yet grateful grin tugged at his lips, "i- i thought you were busy travelling?"

questions buzzed through his mind. his eyes studied kida, taking in all the small details that appeared in front of him. it was clear she hadn't changed much since their time in high school, she was still tiny (or maybe he grew? roman wasn't very sure) and her hair was longer than he remembered. past the noticeable changes, the new style and make-up, her bright smile was still the exact same as before. as the questions slowed down, one thought hummed in roman's mind: he truly missed her.

She couldn't help but let out a soft chuckle as he inquired about her schedule. Her typical dimpled smile dancing on her lips, "You would honestly think I would be too busy to attend our school re-union? Don't you remember I promised I would at least attend a reunion? I had to literally beg and plead one of my fathers to drop me off here while we were in town."
The female gave him a quick scan, the lighting was not really appropriate for making observations but from the way he towered over her she could notice one thing for sure. He had grown over the course of years. She still remembers meeting Roman alongside the other two when they were just little kids. It was the joy of her life finding out the four would be attending this school together as they grew up. Even though Kadara was more absent then present due to her travelling conditions. Despite that she can get why Roman was not that enthusiastic about this reunion. He was the kind of person that preferred to be alone with his history books rather than here. She was surprised he was here in the first place. Even if it was toying with his loose thread.
Kadara brought his awkward self into one of her warm hugs, leaning her head against his chest, "Gosh... I missed you Roman. Travelling was always much more fun with you guys!" With a soft sigh she parted their hug and took his hand. "Come on. I know you would rather be anywhere else but here right now." Kadara wanted some time with him and being interrupted by a lot of their peers was not ideal. See, Kadara came from a different social group during her school years. She was part of the cheer squad and so her popularity was to the roof among her peers.
"Also, how many times have I told you never play with loose threads? You'll loosen the sweater. You ruined so much already." she muttered with a chuckle. She started motioning down the corridor, sliding him with her.

after being apart for so long, kida still looked as optimistic and bubbly since graduation.

there wasn't much change in the woman that stood in front of him. she still had the same rich, brown hair and matching dark eyes were still doll-like as ever, with her long eyelashes appearing like long legs of spiders. roman was certainly awe-struck to say the least, even if he awkwardly towered over her, kida still had the same effect on him. no matter how hard he tried, roman always found himself scrolling endlessly through kida's blog, wishing they were all back in the same lavish kitchen, munching on grapes and pretending they were explorers, on a mission to find the sweetest dessert they could grab their hands on.

life was so much more simple back then.

a soft chuckle left roman's lips as kida spoke about her dads. he'd met them once or twice at the many events he was dragged along to by his parents and every time he greeted them with a boyish smile before running off to escape the adults' glaring eyes. it wasn't that kida's dads were terrible people, it was more the fact he was absolutely terrified of them, but he wasn't the best when it came to socialisation anyway. "your dads are in town as well?" he absently asked yet his voice was quickly cut off.

the sudden hug shouldn't have come as a surprise to roman, yet his heart raced with the touch of kida's petite arms around him and her head resting against his chest. an awkward chuckle escaped his lips as roman slowly placed his hands on kida's back, gently returning the hug as a awestruck smile grew on the edge of his lips. "i missed you too, kida." the words easily fell off his tongue, truth dripping from his words like sweet honey. roman cherished the moment, it felt like the world stopped just for them, and for that he was grateful.

roman blinked back as he watched kida unravel herself from him and take his hand with a smile. "was it that obvious?" he dryly chuckled, his feet picking up the pace to follow wherever she was leading him. a quiet laughter followed kida's scolding as roman glanced at the thread for a moment, returning his gaze back to kida. fixing his sweater would have to come later, all he wanted to focus on was her.

Kadara let out a soft chuckled as she parted their hug. A hug that she greatly missed more than anything. She loved how she just fit in his arms. How it felt.

She stayed silent as her heels clicked all the way towards the silent comforts of the library, her hand still in his own as she dragged him with her. She remembered the countless times that the pair ran in here with their friends whenever they learnt about something new or whenever they wanted background checks for their latest conquests. She just wished she could rewind back to those times. True, Kadara was more absent then present due to her travels but the few times she was there she cherished it.

"Well, kind of? I mean I can tell that this is not your type of scenarios Roman. You looked like your were going to collapse out of boredom any second." she taunted with her typical giggle. "To answer your question, no, my dads are still back in Dubai. I decided it was time to come home for a few weeks because who would want to leave a certain Godfrey suffering through this horrific high school reunion alone, hmm? Besides, we couldn't have you missing me too much now could I?" Kadara gave him a wink before letting go of his hand to open the library door and leaning against the wooden oak.

Gesturing with her hand towards the interior of the school library, Kida awaited Roman to enter, "Shall we, Messer?"

Kida was simply glad that she was here at the moment, with him. Her eyes drifted from his loose thread of his sweater up to his eyes, those mysterious eyes which occasionally gets covered with loose strands of his dark brown hair. How his poker face started to light up when she surprised him. How it was still lighting up. She did not come for the stupid reunion. True, she had status back in high school but he was the real reason that she came back.
