Prompt:

Word Limit: 100 minimum, 600 maximum

Time Limit: 50 hours

Have fun and good luck.

So I've been lurking here for quite a while now... And I want to join the fun so here's my first entry :P

---

My feet dangled in the air as I sat with James in the edge of our roof.

“James, what's your wish?” I blurted out.

“What?” He said, a bit surprised.

“Well you could fly and go anywhere. I'm sure you'd visited a lot of amazing places. I was wondering if you had a wish.”

“Oh, I never thought about it.” He paused. “But now that you'd asked, how about you?”

“Well.. To discover things?” I looked ahead and wondered what lies across those buildings, across that ocean. “I am so tired of the usual: go to school, find work, get married, then die, I want more! We are given this life for some reason and I want to spend every time I have with unforgettable moments. I want something new, something extraordinary!” When I realized my voice have gotten louder, I sighed. “Guess I'm not making any sense, but that's what I want.”

James didn't reply for a moment.

Suddenly, he stood up. I looked up at him, “Going already?” I tried not to show my disappointment.

“No. Stand up.” He offered a hand. I grabbed it and pulled myself up.

We stood together on the narrow platform of the roof. “What now?” I asked.

He didn't answer and instead grabbed my arms to lace them around his neck. I can feel the tips of his blonde hair tickling my wrist. “Hold on tight.”

“Wha--OH.” We started to ascend from the roof. Our legs dangling in the air.

I looked down, then looked at him again, “The last time I recall, you don't have superhuman strength.”

“Believe me, you weigh like nothing.” He smirked. He didn't show any signs that he had difficulty on carrying me, so I believed him.

We flew up until I couldn't see my house. Then we move forward, slowly at first, then fast. Below me were the tall buildings of New York. The cars on the road was nothing but orange-yellow ants. Different sizes of different colors twinkled below me. I felt like I managed to get close to the stars and was now enclosed in them. It was so breathtaking.

We flew vertically, him under me, as if he was lying in the sea of stars. I stretched my arm and felt the wind against my hand. I imagined I could control the wind, form it into different things. It was so refreshing, it felt extraordinary.

James then went horizontal again and I put my arm back around him. He went up and up, past a dark cloud, drenching us wet.

“Hey!” I blinked away the droplets on my eyelashes. “You did that on purpose, did you?” With my ears popping and the wind hissing in my ears, it was difficult to hear his reply but I felt his chest vibrate as he laughed.

He started to descended on the roof of the Empire State Building. When I was sure it was safe, I unlaced my arms around him and stepped back

In front of us was the gorgeous skyline of New York. Despite of having lived in the city for almost all my life, I have never seen it in this point of view. I ran to the thick stone block and leaned. I could only mutter “Wow” as I gawked and tried to take everything all in.

“Now I know what's my wish.” James said behind me.

I turned, “What is it?”

He stood beside me and smiled, “To have someone beside me as I travel the world. I wouldn't be alone then.”

It's a cliche I know but shrugs. kill me kill me kill me kill me

“I wish to fly.”

Four words, spoken softly, were enough to throw the world into chaos. It wasn’t the words themselves which caused the consternation, but it was the speaker. Death wished to fly, and the denizens of the air began to argue and debate amongst themselves, each demanding to know which of the others would give up their wings so that Death could fly.

“I cannot!” the mighty Dragon roared. “Without my wings I am no longer a dragon. I would not be able to hunt nor to avoid those new creatures… Men they call themselves. It must be another.”

“I could give him mine,” the Eagle replied. “Yet if I do this, who would inspire the world? You cannot Dragon, for all who see you know fear. It is my soaring flight which inspires dreams. Let this burden pass to another.”

“As the Dragon, I cannot live without my wings,” chirped the Hummingbird. “I would die of starvation before I could walk from one flower to another.”

“How would I do my job of clearing away the dead things without my wings?” asked the Vulture.

On and on they argued, each presenting the reasons they could not give their wings to Death. For days, then weeks the debate raged across the sky as argument and counter flew back and forth. Then, as yet another day dawned upon the furor, Death appeared. Instantly all fell silent, staring fearfully at the cloaked figure, wondering why he had come.

“I have flown,” Death said. “It was truly the most magnificent thing that I have ever experienced. So far above the world, I could forget, if only for a moment, the grim task to which I have been called.”

“But…” stammered the Dragon, “We have not chosen.”

Death said nothing, merely setting aside his fearful scythe, then slowly withdrawing a small body from his cloak. It was the Sparrow. The tiny brown body was still, yet Death cradled it as though it were the most precious thing in the world.

“He came to me while you were arguing,” Death said, his voice full of wonder. “He said that flying was the greatest joy that he had ever known, and he could not bear the thought that someone who wished to fly would be denied.”

“But my wings are too small for you,” Death said, in the voice of the Sparrow. “I know only one way to give you my flight. I give this to you freely, that you may know the joy you have been denied.”

“He hopped to my shoulder,” Death continued in his own voice. “Then he breathed his very life into me. In that instant, I lived every beat of his heart, every flap of his wings. I felt the world fall away below me as the wind carried me along upon its breath. He gave me everything he was. Now, I ask you all. Help me repay his gift.”

Each of the birds came forward, each leaving a single feather to form a huge pyre, upon which Death set the tiny body. Then the Dragon stepped forward, bathing the pyre in his fire.

“Now little one… Arise!”

The Phoenix paused in his tale, looking at the expectant faces of the fledglings.

“I think,” he said gently, “That we should finish this tale another day. Now off to sleep with you.”

Not to interrupt, but is it still possible to submit a prompt, or is judging going to happen soon? This looks like a pretty neat thing to try out, honestly!

If I'm not wrong with my calculations, you still have an hour and seven minutes to submit an entry before the prompt is closed. Things change, though. He might extend the deadline.

Thanks! If anything, I'll just lay low and wait until this one is over, but thanks again!

You can still participate. There's still two and a half hours remaining for this prompt, if you wish. I only have two people to judge at the moment, anyways. ^_^  You can wait for the next prompt, though, if you wish. You don't have to participate in every one.

(After submission: Hmm, apparently when I signed in it sent me back to page one and I saw @asharasahara's 34 word final moment prompt from back in like July. Oh well, Ima keep this here because I am proud of it.)

Since 34 words are hard enough, I'll make it harder by writing in Haiku form.

Final Moments

Unseeing eyes peer
Their color all washed away
Slowly he now speaks

Loved ones gathered near
Silently listening to
His words of wisdom

Standing in silence
Weeping together softly
His final moments

32 words, 34 counting the title. For those who do not know; A Haiku is a Japanese poem that has verses that contain exactly 17 syllables. The first line of the verse contains 5 syllables, the second 7, and the third 5 again. They do not have to rhyme and most do not.

@ViralBadger Nice haiku. It's very well done. Sorry the site played with ya and you got an old prompt. ^_^  Do stick around and put in for the next one. I would love to see what you come up with.

Which leaves me two people to judge.
xD  With all the likes I got on my prompt, I was expecting more. Aw well.

@Obsessed I'm glad you joined us. Yer first entry is really well done. I enjoyed the story, even if it was supposedly cliche. ;)  It was sweet and heartwarming.

@Tarmagon Thank you so much for putting that in. I absolutely loved it. It was well written and amazing and, honestly, I'm a sucker for stories like yours. xD  Please keep writing.

Winner

@Tarmagon

Well done, both of you. Please keep up the great work and I look forward to more things from both of you and the next prompt.

It's night, and you comfortably sleeping in your soft foam bed. All of a sudden you feel a powerful force from behind you.

It's Shrek! And I can't say anymore because It's explicit and rpnation would ban me.

Prompt

Well, THAT certainly wasn't supposed to happen!

Limit : 300-500 words

Duration : 48 hours from this post.

Thanks for the kind words @asharasahara.

As the sun had set, she looked at the clouds above her and sighed. Stress, stress that she had yet to discover more of. She wondered when her father would come, an occasion to meet him once again. The wonders of seeing her father again after two years flew in her wild imagination. Her and her father dancing to the happiest jazz tunes, enjoying the time they would have. Daydreaming with her head laying on the ground, she had eventually fallen asleep. It seems as if she had been foolish enough to sleep in the middle of a grass field, alone. Half an hour passed, one hour passed, but suddenly, Sana woke up with a huge load of energy and excitement when she felt a tap on her shoulder. "Dad?!"
A huge heap of energy was heard in her voice. As she turned around, she saw a familiar face, but not her dad. She had a small frown and said "Y-you're not my father." He replied quietly, "N-no, I'm not your dad. I was wondering if I c-" Then, before he could say what he wanted to say, Sana cut him off and said, "I don't think you need anything from me. If you would leave, that would be great." And with that, the guy walked away a bit bummed at the girl's attitude.
She didn't care about the guy. Not at all. All she cared about was seeing her dad. Only every two years they get to see each other, but that guy ruined her attitude and her emotions. How stupid of her, to think and call that guy her dad. She glanced at her car and back at the sky. Should I leave? No. Don't think like that, Sana. With the thought of leaving, Sana got a call f-from Mother? Huh? What's going on? A worried signal hit her. What's happening? She answered the call and said,"Mom, what's up?". Her mom answered with a worried voice,"Hon-honey, your father was on the way to meet with you, but....". It seemed as if her mother couldn't continue. With a worried voice, Sana answered, "Mom, calm down. It's okay. Just tell me." Her mother had sounded like she was about to burst into tears, she said a bit quietly ,"Y-your father has been taken to the hospital." Sana felt a tear roll down her cheek and eventually tear after tear came down. What? Why? This was unexpected. How come couldn't make it safely?
She fell into a state of tears and eventually, she had heard what she didn't want to hear. The beep of the buzzer that signaled the death of a person. The sound no one would want to hear. Something that haunted her. She hung up the line and walked slowly to her car. She drove back home, a far place away from the spot where the news was leaked. A state of shock. When she got home, crying in her room was all she needed.

“ You act like i meant to do it Lily. “ Rose cried to her friend from across the room. Lily spun around, a wave of blonde following her head.

“ Rose. You did it. You heard the legends. You heard what the others said and you still did it like the idiot you are. “ Lily said glaring at her friend.

“ Okay so yes i did it. I didn’t mean for this to happen. It wasn’t supposed to. “ Rose said frantically stepping towards the girl.

“ But it did. “ Lily said, turning away, starting down the street.

“So what. Are you just going to leave the Earth on its own? Leave humans to rot because of my mistake?” Rose asked walked after her.

“ Yes Rose. That is exactly my plan. Humans have owned this world for centuries. They ruined it with their touch. They can all go to hell for all i care. “ Lily turned around and spat. Rose stopped in her spot, looking at Lily with sad eyes.

“ What happened?” She asked shaking her head.

“ What happened to what?” Lily snapped.

“ You. You used to care about the humans. “

“ That was over a century ago. “ Lily said. She was frustrated by this now. SHe had unfolded her wings. They were bright and golden like light itself had graced them.

“ So that’s it. You’re just going to fly away, back to heaven and leave Earth to die. “ Rose said looking up and down at Lily who had already started away again.

“ There’s no reason for me to stay. “ Lily said.

Rose shook her head. “ You know. The humans will die from this damn apocalypse. Than after they are gone the Demons will take earth. If they can climb up from hell you really think they can’t climb their way to heaven. “

“ Heaven’s gates are closed to the likes of you. “ Lily said harshly.

Rose laughed. “ The likes of me. Yeah. But you forget friend. That i still know all the tricks. “ She said unfurling her own wings. Unlike Lily’s they were black and had feathers falling from them.

“ Your wings. They are broken I see. “ Lily said.

“ You’re scared aren't you?

“ No. “ Lily said.

“ You are. You know what i can do. Hell, all of the angels do now. I bought the damned apocalypse down. I wonder what else i can do. Like i don’t know lead demons into heaven. “ Rose said walking to Lily until their faces were inches apart.Lily Stiffened  “ And you know i can, don’t you angel?” She asked with a grin.

“ I certainly didn’t mean to bring on the apocalypse, but I’m sure glad I did. “ Rose said. Lily, unsure of what to say disappeared.

Rose shook her head. “ Damn angels. “ She muttered as she walked away from the scene.

This is actually from a story I was writing years ago. I thought a scene like this would be funny as it would fit the characters perfectly, especially the last one mentioned xD.

Please excuse the writing, it's late and I need serious sleep but this was the only time I'd be able to post up.

Hope it's enjoyed.

Where was she?

“Do you see her?” Not having been paying much attention to her surroundings except for the search, Solange jumped, turning to see the criminal.

“All of this shit wouldn’t have fucking happened if you hadn’t wanted to stop here because you saw the damn guy from before. Matter of fact, none of this would have happened if we never stopped to get you! What’s stopping me from reporting you now!” She hissed, her eyes now searching frantically through the crowd of the carnival, landing on the police relaxing not too far from them.

His eyes followed hers and a loud growl left him as he pulled her close.

“Look, I know you’re being all emotional right now but I promise you that reporting me and the others is the last thing you want to do.” He hissed, revealing the gun in his waistband.Sol could feel her stomach drop at the sight. He wouldn’t use that would he? The flashback to him mercilessly killing the young man a few nights ago told her otherwise.

“Yo!”

Both turned away from the other, the sight of the second criminal of the group waving his arms. “We found her!”

Relief washed over the girl, her shoulders dropping as the other nodded. “Aiden you’re a lifesaver!” She called out to him as she ran over, Aiden keeping up with her with ease as Cameron followed from behind. “Where was she?”

“You’ll never guess it. It’s literally the last place you’d look.” He said, snickering slightly.

“I don’t like the sound of that…” Solange muttered, noticing that the crowd was getting a bit thicker, people cheering for something though she didn't care to see why. She just wanted to find the last person of their party, leave this forsaken carnival, get these guys to their spot, and get home before her parents did. Though with every adventure they went through, home seemed to be getting further away.

“Trust me, you won’t. Tried to stop her but-“

“Stop her? Where in the hell is she?” Solange groaned, growing panicked as they came to a stop. Her eyes flickered this way and that, trying to find the lost member of the group. She would be stopped though by Aiden, his hands taking a hold of her and turning. “Right there.”

“Woo!” Came a cry of joy, that caught her attention.. Sitting on the mechanical bull, riding like it was nothing was none other than Leslie Belchito. Solange’s 72 year old grandmother.

A small whistle left Cam, “Yeah, no… This wasn't supposed to happen…”

Blushing furiously, Solange watched as her grandmother rode the bull like a pro, gesturing to the crowd as they went wild, eating up the view before them. Not knowing what else to do, Solange could only watch in fear and shock as the old woman lived up her life like there was no tomorrow.

“GRANDMA!!!"

The smoke and dust billowed out around them and they were all coughing because of it as a roar filled the air.

"Whelp," she commented, grinning around her coughs. "That wasn't suppose to happen."

"How the hell is that a happy statement," he snapped, trying to clear his lungs quickly. "You were supposed to banish the damn thing, not turn it into a dragon!"

She shrugged, still grinning. "I like dragons."

A hand clasped her shoulder and she looked up. "Thank you for trying, Belinda. Let us take it from here."

The white haired figure stepped passed, their long hair swaying in its ponytail. Belinda watched them and another walk towards the dragon, her gaze going to the blond beside her. "Sisu?"

He gave her a hard look even as it turned fond. "Still not pleased about the damn thing being a dragon now."

She grinned at him. "I know. Should we help the leaders?"

There was a burst of magic somewhere in the smoke they couldn't see. Sisu shook his head. "No. We're better off not interfering."

A body flew at them and Sisu grabbed Belinda, dragging her to the side. It flew past them and hit something beyond their sight. "We need to clear this smoke and dust," Sisu grumbled, standing.

"I can do that!" Belinda exclaimed, grabbing for her magic tomb. Sisu's hand snatched at her wrist, holding it tight. He glared at her. "You have already done enough."

She grinned at him. "Then you do it," she challenged.

He gave her a flat look but complied. Belinda watched as his gaze became unfocused as he turned his focus towards his task. She waited with bated breath, looking for it. The first sign was minute, small, but she saw it. She grinned as the magic suddenly became visible around Sisu before expanding rabidly, engulfing the area. Suddenly, the wind kicked up and the field was cleared.

Belinda looked around, frowning. "Sisu, where are we?"

He sagged against her, grumbling, "Great. Now it's my turn to say that wasn't suppose to happen."

Belinda beamed at him. "See? I'm not the only one that messes up."

"Shut up, Bella," he chastised, though his exhaustion bled into his words as he tried to stand without her aid. "Come on. We have a long way to walk."

She pulled one of his arms around her shoulders and gave a cheeky grin. "Want me to turn something into a dragon?"

He glared at her. "No."

Submissions for the current prompt are now closed. I will review all entries again this evening, and will announce the winner by 8 pm EST. Thank you for your wonderful submissions and patience while I make my decision. Tarm.

Okay, time for the serious stuff. Before I start,  let me say I'm not a grammar nazi,  if I can understand the general gist of the story I'm good. I'll only say something if it's so bad it detracts from understanding the story. So,  let's get started.

@Literally That was a very poignant tale.

@Awkwardpotato Interesting take there. Angel and Fallen I assume.

@Paranoid  I had a bit of difficulty understanding the flow of your story. I had to make some assumptions about the background, but even then the underlying character connection was, vague.

@JujuBee That was unexpected in a good way. GRANDMA!

@asharasahara That was also quite unexpected, and also in a good way. Magic is full of the unexpected.

But, there can be only winner, and you've all made it a hard choice. So, without further delay, congratulations @JujuBee! Grandma on the mechanical bull clinched it.

Yay!! Grandma is always for the win.

Okay, so I've been on a bit of a binge with the horror genre of things so that's what inspired this prompt. I used to have picture I had planned on using if I ever won but it got lost. So now I'll try a new one. So here it is:

PROMPT:

"It took us three days before we started seeing shapes in the fog."

Good luck! Can't wait to see what you intelligent people come up with!!

“Did we lose them?” Shane gasped, struggling to stay upright under the weight of his pack as he fought for breath.

“I… think so,” I managed to get out around my own great gulps of air. The straps of my pack dug into my shoulders despite the extra fabric I had cut from the hem of my skirt to pad them, and after a moment’s hesitation I dropped the cursed thing to the damp ground. Shane’s pack hit the ground a moment after mine, and he sank down onto a fallen log with a groan. I joined him a moment later, my exhausted groan a perfect mirror of his. Five interminable days we had been in this strange place, and our party of six had been reduced to Shane and me.

What had started out as a simple bandit eradication had taken a turn for the worse when we caught up with the brigands. It seemed that the reason for their success was the barbarian shaman that had taken up with them, and he objected to our pursuit most emphatically. Rather than a disorganized rabble, we had been confronted with disciplined ranks, headed by a figure in an outlandish costume of feathers, bones, and beaded fringe. Before we could fully register what we were seeing, the figure had gestured with a carved stick topped with what looked like an animal skull, and a wave of blackness had swept over us. When the darkness had left our vision, we had found ourselves here.

Damp ground underfoot, dense grey fog blotting out anything more than a few feet away, the only light an anemic orb low in the sky, barely visible through the cloying fog. We had camped where we found ourselves. Without trees to cut for poles or wood for a fire, we had arranged ourselves in a circle, and Dina had raised a shield over us. When the mist lightened the next morning, both the shield and Dina were gone. We wasted nearly half the day searching for her, but there were no tracks, no sign. In the end, we picked a direction and headed out.

The end of the second day found us at the edge of a blasted forest, twisted trees reaching out of sight in the mist that had still not abated. This time we had our tents, a fire, and set watch. It didn’t help. Corin wasn’t there when the rest of us awakened. He had been on the last watch, and simply vanished.

We wasted no time beyond that which it took to strike camp to call for him, then we moved on. It took us three days before we started seeing, shapes, in the fog. Dim forms, barely perceived out of the corner of the eye, paced us the remainder of the day. We doubled our watch that night, Shane and I taking the first together, then resting fitfully as Kern and Lyrissa watched.

All of the fourth day the shadow shapes paced us, never coming fully into view, never making a sound. Our nerves were wrung out, our bodies exhausted as we made camp. Once more, Shane and I stood first watch, huddling by the meager fire until Kern and Lyrissa woke and took over.

Seemingly moments later they were shaking us awake, and we began to strike camp. The shadows struck as we were settling out packs. Kern and Lyrissa vanished into a mass of shadow soundlessly, and Shane and I did the only thing we could. We ran.

The sun was out but it wouldn't burn off the thick fog. The clouds had been overhead longer than the fog had and he didn't expect that to change. His footfall was soft in among the trees as he made his way through the forest, his gaze sweeping the fog.

"They say it just appeared one day."

He stopped, looking back. Three others were walking behind him, each carrying a child on their back. The one behind him met his gaze and she nodded. He returned it, looking to the other two. They nodded as well. Turning forward again, he started walking.

"People started vanishing without a sign."

He picked up his pace.

"It took us three days before we started seeing shapes in the fog."

The trees were whipping passed him as he dodged one and then another with relative ease. The bonus to being what he was.

"That's when the bodies started showing up."

There was a snap to their left and he dug his heels into the dirt, scraping to a stop. The other three came to a stop around him, all of them looking towards the source of the sound.

"Someone said that the fog was driving people to murder."

All they saw was the forest.

"I believe them."

And the fog.

"I'm worried that....."

He turned to continue on but out of the corner of his eye, he saw a black mass and he whipped around.

"I'm losing my mind, too."

 There was nothing there.

"There's no way out."

He jumped at the touch to his arm and looked to the girl that had been following him. She wasn't looking at him.

"I keep seeing the shapes in the fog."

He turned slowly.

"They keep speaking to me."

He felt himself instinctively bristle.

"Keep calling my name."

He couldn't move.

"They won't leave me alone."

Couldn't breathe.

"And no one else believes me."

The masses in the fog stared at them.

"They don't understand how dangerous these things are."

He moved to reach for the girl beside him.

"That once you enter the fog...."

The masses were upon them before his hand reached her.

"You're dead."
