Of course, Mr. Cheshire's probably just another creep claiming credit for a crime he didn't commit. You'd be surprised how many people get their thrills that way."

While he waited for Jinx to respond, he frowned at her and said sternly, "You weren't really thinking of working for him, were you? Whether he's the killer or not, a creep like that is dangerous."

Kazama Hinazuki arrived at his destination, entering the building with haste. His brain created a hurricane, a deep anger resides within him. He took the elevator to the eight floor, Takeda Edo's office, stating he was a businessman and needed a conversation with him. Before that, the security guard searched him from top to bottom, he found nothing. Then the metal detector test was needed, negative. No metal. "Thank you sir, I'll be on my way." And when he arrived at the eight floor, there lied Takeda Edo's lifeless body. Kazama kept calm, and knew he had to get out of the area quickly otherwise he'd be arrested for being a suspect. It was then he saw a hooded figure plunging a knife through the body's head.

Grin reappeared at the top of Tokyo's highest skyscraper, looking down at the humans below him. "To the world, they are but a single, tiny speck. To me, they are my source of entertainment. To them, they are everything. Keh heh heh! Humans, so interesting, yet so fragile. I'll just have to see what new entertainment they can bring me, it's been a while since I terrorized them, keh heh heh!" The midnight blue color of the sky faded into a dark black. People below him noticed how the sky changed color quickly, and when they looked up, they felt as if something was watching them.

A frightening face watched ominously at Japan, at first it appeared to be a strange phenomenon, but the movements of his mouth confirmed it was real. "HUMAAAAAAAAANSSSSSSSS!" His screaming voice thundered across the continent, scaring everyone who heard it. As soon as his voice stopped spreading, the face made a wink, and disappeared forever. Instantly, people began responding with screams of their own, they were going crazy from the mere sight and sound of the Shinigami. What awaited the human race? Doom? Evolution? Who knows, many think of gods as all knowing beings, but in truth, Grin, along with all other forms of gods...


Are all just as clueless as humans...

Dodgson watched the girl walk away until he was lost in the crowd. "Be safe, Jinx. Be safe."


He beckoned with his hand and drone flew down and landed at his feet. He picked it up and set off in the opposite direction, back to UEC.


On the way, he stopped at a diner for some coffee. When the waitress brought him his cup, he muttered, "Too old to walk these streets? When I was her age, we never called anyone old 'til..."


The waitress herself could not have been more then twenty-five. Dodgson looked at his reflection in the chrome napkin-holder, noticing the bald head, the wrinkles on his face, the strands of gray appearing at the temples. Over the diner's speakers, the radio was playing Bob Seger's Rock and Roll Never Forgets.


"...'til they started complaining how things were better when they were young."


The music on the radio was interrupted by a new bulletin, too fast and frantic for the few words of Japanese Dodgson had learned to do him any good. The waitress understood and started babbling some nonsense about people seeing the face of Death in the sky.


Dodgson glanced at his reflection again, then looked at the waitress with a faint smile. "Death's coming for all of us, kid. Always has been." He calmly sipped his coffee. "Just don't be too afraid to live because of it."

Superficially, the computer lab at UEC appeared to be a sanctuary of normalcy compared to the chaos Dodgson had seen on the streets, but that was deceptive. There was the usual scattering of students, hunched over their keyboards, staring at their screens. All of them were wearing headphones, so the only sound was the clicking of their keyboards, but Dodgson could tell a great deal just from the rhythm of their strokes. The students were not coding, not playing games, they were sending messages, the same quick, urgent messages over and over.


Dodgson stepped into a side room and snapped the drone into one of the recharging brackets on the wall. From there, he went back across the lab, stopping in the break area for a can of cola and the last luke-warm slice of pizza. He threw the empty box in the garbage and a generous donation in the jar marked Pizza Fund, then went up a short flight of steps to his office which overlooked the lab. Placing his impromptu supper on his desk, he sat down and spun around to face an array of six large monitors on adjustable arms.


The center screen lit up with a pattern of multi-colored dots, resembling the type used to test colorblindness, but far more sophisticated. They were designed to take advantage of the small quirks in his perception that made it unique. The characters he saw clearly would appear as either different characters or random dots to anyone else. He typed in those numbers, the screens all sprung to life and a synthesized voice said, "Good evening, Dr. Dodgson."


A young man, a grad student named Satoru, rushed in. "Professor, I'm so glad to see you. I thought you were caught out in that madness."


Dodgson looked up from his screens. "I was. Hopefully, I've gotten some information that'll help us figure out what's really going on." Turning back to his computer, he said, "Cody, give me the results of the scans I requested."

What had unfolded before him was traumatizing, but Kazama still managed to maintain his calm attitude. "What in the!" Moments after, the face of death was in the sky. He didn't waste any time, and got out of the building as soon as possible, "So my genius deduction wasn't wrong... I thought I was crazy for a second there, but I wasn't wrong." But before leaving, he made sure to take the note and sprint off hastily. "Wait... This is encrypted right?" Kazama was far from the reaches of the crime scene, and conveniently right outside of Dodgson's lab, shouting curses, and rude remarks into the air. "FUUUUUUU!!!!"

Before the computer could reply, another student, an undergrad named Taiana, poked her head into his office. "Professor! There's a man outside...he's shouting and very upset and I didn't know what to do."


Dodgson firmly said, "Cody, wait." Then he told the student, "Think. Call Security if he's a problem. What else would you do?" The girl just stood there with a very distressed face, so he let out a deep sigh and got out of his chair. "Alright, Security's probably got enough to handle already and it seems I'm becoming the resident expert on weirdos. Let's see what's wrong."


Dodgson followed Taiana out to where the man was shouting and cursing. He rubbed his forehead, then walked over to him. "Okay, fella, what's the problem? You're upsetting my students and they've gone through enough already."

"Huh?" Kazama Hinazuki looked over to Dodgson and instantly recognized him. "Oh hey, I know you." And then his instincts kicked in. "We need to have a talk in private. He took out his wallet and searched for 'Fafnir's' ID and showed it to him. "As you may know, Dracul von Stein is working on this case to solve the murder. I am his associate, and I need to speak with you as soon as possible."
