Aria came from abusive parents, although never physically abused as a child, her father beat her mother repeatedly. It was something she witnessed on a daily basis, and something that has led her to turn to drugs and antidepressants. Self medicating with drugs helped her to escape the physical and mental pain she endured whilst watching her mother getting treated in such a disgusting and demoralising way.
One day, at primary school, Aria’s mother drew her out for a ‘dentist’ appointment. She reluctantly left, knowing her family couldn’t afford the proper dental care needed in the UK, both parents jealous of the free healthcare the under 18 was entitled to. It was a selfish and malicious cycle.
The car ride lasted hours, until they got to the airport. Her mother had arranged flights to the US. After endless hours of trauma and mistrust, they had escaped their father. Yet, after paying visa and flights, neither of them had enough money to buy proper property, not barely enough to eat. With just enough money to buy a trailer park in a rough part of town, her mother bought it. It was better to live rough than not at all.
As for keeping just enough money to live off of, her mother found a very illegal way to earn money, hence why Aria avoids the caravan as much as she could. Prostitution could be loud and messy. With her mother enduring it too, she can’t stand to be in the caravan, and would rather sleep on the beach than at home.
