One perticular group I was in, ppl kept saying "No hate towards the roleplayer" and yet two ppl hate me so its like "If you hate me, dont rp with me."

One of my pet peeve is when someone asks for your discord to rp in, your guys plan out the whole thing and such..... They just decide to not only to ghost you, but unfriend you/kick you from the server you guys made.....

Another pet peeve I have is when you plan out the rp and characters, and as soon as the rp starts, they just ghost you.... And for no apparent reason either.. Like I'd understand if you guys have been rping for a long period of time and the rp is getting rather old.... But barely a couple of posts in..... Like if you hate it that much let me know, so we can agree to just end it or figure out how we can fix it....

1: When someone tries to pressure you into using a character you don't want to use is a big pet peeve for me. Especially since I have tons of characters.

2: One time when I was like, 15 or something, a dude begged me to rp a girl and when I finally did I said she was a child and then he made me age her up. (Note: he didn't say he wanted to do an exclusively f/f romance rp or anything beforehand.) I then proceeded to get petty revenge by making my character betray his at the end.

3: When people ignore already established relationships. That drives me absolutely nuts. One time this dude found out my character was gay and I guess he never rped gay romance before so he was hyped as hell. The only issue was that I had very clearly stated that my character was married and had two children. This was a group rp too and my character's partner was there too. The one guy kept flirting aggressively with my character despite the fact that my character wasn't interested what so ever, and the fact that his husband was with him. I have no idea what that guy expected to happen when he suggested we did this. Note: This wasn't planned to be romance based at all, he just did that.

4: When people instantly try and kill my character for bullshit reasons. I don't mind my characters dying, but it's very easy to tell when someone tries to make up excuses to kill your character because they don't like them. Like one of my characters was a criminal mastermind and I made sure to establish what he's capable of before hand, (this was in a group rp) and at least two people tried to defeat him at the way beginning when there was no motivation to do so. Like he didn't commit any crimes yet, people just wanted him dead instantly. I will admit it was kinda funny though lol.

5: People who think they know your character way more than you do and try and make them do things they wouldn't during the rp. People who try and take control of your character is already annoying, but its just plain infuriating when they make them act insanely out of character.

This is actually a really unpopular opinion I've learned. It's really hard to find people that just want to improvise. So many rpers get so excited about plotting instead of actually writing, and I've had people get ANGRY at me for not wanting to plot out a romance in a group RP before the RP even starts.

I don't like plotting. I love being surprised and discovering new things.

I'm so glad you also feel this way!!! Also GETTING SURPRISED IN RP IS SOOOO GOOOOOD. My best rp partners have been able to do so much with so little and I just can't... it keeps me on my toes and makes the whole interaction amazing.

Also that absolutely sucks about the group RP thing. I've found many times that my character doesn't actually work romantically with others and having a pre-established relationship can really kill that whole thing. I love simping, but ultimately my characters are their own thing and if they don't work it doesn't work. Wish more people understood that and had more spontaneous fun.

Only ever writing canons for other people and never having a chance to write my own characters made me all kinds of bitter.

I still love writing canon characters, don’t get me wrong, but in my experience requiring people to double severely cuts down on my fatigue. I don’t feel like I have to perform, and when I get time to write my own characters, I find I actually have more energy and motivation to write for the canon I’m responsible for as well.

As far as I see it, if you want to do just 1x1s, the only “fair” way to do it is canon x canon or oc x oc. Some people may love a canon enough to be willing to play them no matter what (I’m this way with a couple canons myself), but my partner offering to double regardless sure feels nice and is appreciated, even if it isn’t necessary.

I don't do fandom RPs but I've come across this base problem many times. People don't want to write more than one plot at a time. Like when the main characters are split up with us each suppose to be helping with whatever issue they are dealing with. We are suppose to be writing what they are both doing but they keep "Forgetting" to post their part of what is happening in my mains scene. Trying to claim they want to "Focus on this situation for awhile" or even trying to just do a quick run down OOC of what happened with my characters.

And I do notice this happens in situations where they want to do a lot of rather tedious focus on one OCs issues. As in I'm getting feelings of "They really need to write this in a short story themselves. I'm just a captive audience" Playing the other part and knowing the story will move eventually would make me feel more like a team player to play through it. But getting my characters ignored makes my "(censor) this (Censor)! I'm permanently done with this story!" button get hit.

Balanced Sex Ratios - I've never understood this one. Why do you need an equal amount of girls and boys? I get people do romance heavy RPs and so want a balance, but this still doesn't make a whole lot of sense as its built on the premise that it would all be heterosexual couples. If you have six characters and three are heterosexual females, one is a bi-sexual male and the last two are homosexual males, yea, you have balanced sex ratios, but you don't have 'three potential' couples. Its... just a weird thing I've noticed with a lot of people who really like having a balanced sex ratio regardless of the point of the roleplay or the sexuality of those characters.

Forced Doubling Up - I don't like making two or more characters. I've always found myself drawn more to one and start to dislike writing for the others and they become a chore. I don't mind it if they are NPCs, cause whatever, they aren't a character I have to worry about, keep involved and control over. They serve their purpose when they are needed and I have no issue doing that. So when its forced upon me, especially to meet some arbitrary sex quota, I roll my eyes so hard my skull almost cracks open.

Nepotism - I get friends matter, I get people wanna rp with their friends, but there are points where nepotism just really messes with everything. I can't tell you the amount of times I've joined an RP, noticed it was run by a group of friends [or joined by a group of friends], and it just doesn't work out because they tend to focus on each other and ignore everything else, they do things that bend the rules or theme of the story and get away with it because they are friends, or the one that annoys me the most, if you make an RP, and you have a friend who didn't even finish their CS and wants to join... they really should not be joining the RP until they get some stuff sorted. If someone can't be assed to fill out some blanks, not really sure why you think they'd be down to be a committed roleplayer for the long haul.

Over Stylized Font/Codes - I shouldn't have to spend ten minutes looking at a code trying to figure out how to open the damn thing, or worse, spend ten minutes trying to figure it out only to realize, oh, you can't open it because nothing is actually written yet. If a font is overly stylized, weirdly colored or just.. hard to read, its so annoying. I don't even bother trying anymore, if I think I'm interested, I copy and paste it into a word documents so I can read the silly thing without destroying my eyes, and if I am not, I just instantly hit the back button and go elsewhere.

I know people really like the aesthetics of post and CS and what not, but.. just don't go overboard with it.

Pre-Planned Characters - Nine times out of ten, if I look at an interest check and see a list of roles with character archetypes written out, I just hit the back button and don't look back. I'm not interested in playing Bad Boy #412, or Jock #50 or whatever role that has been preordained. Let me look at the RP, think of fun ideas that would add to it and write that.

Mind, I don't mind roles. Like 'Hey, we are doing X RP and for that we need a Prince, a Werezebra and a Squire,' those I get. What I dislike is, 'Hey, we need the *Insert character archetype, personality and relationship with other pre-existing archetypes*'

Meta Gamers - This drives me insane. Where a roleplay is less about creating an interesting story and narrative with others and, to them, is just a way to 'cheese' the system and treat it like a 'game' to make the bestest most strongest character eva. What... Where is the enjoyment in doing that? It truly baffles me. Know what my favorite way to settle IC fights are? Just hitting the person up and being like, 'Yo, I think it would be super cool if like X happened. Or like if your character like freaking impales mine and its this super awesome scene,' <- I feel like the actual fight scenes come out way better when there is a plan laid out for it, when both rpers know what is going to happen and what scene they want to make out of it over 'X slashes at Y!' 'Y uses teleport and then stabs at X!' for a page and a half.

Oh, I get this, too! There are SO many times I’ve thought to myself: “Oh, so what you REALLY want is a customized, interactive fanfic/novella for your character.” It’s a bad feeling.

Gonna add just one more here. I'm feeling a bit cranky this morning. =)
When you code the loving bread crumbs for a role play and no one applies and those who have go radio silent.
I am so bloody tired. That and people flocking to discord. It's so incredibly ridiculous. One, not everyone has access to that type of technology. Two, not everyone wants access to that technology. Having someone attached to my hip leaves me feeling toxically controlled. No. I'm not going to plot three hours at one in the morning with you when I should be sleeping for work. I just miss the days when you could write a post without plotting with anyone. And THAT was not an issue. Not to mention in discord its riddled with bullying. I like forum ooc where they can be monitored by the site owners. It just makes much more sense.
UUUHHHHHHHHHHHGGGG I feel like the era of true good role playing. You know those one's that last like three years with large chunky posts.
I think they are lost forever folks and I've seen this trend for a while. Even through the pandemic. I'm very suprised

I actually have the opposite experience with Discord. I like the convenience of being able to organize and create different servers for all my 1x1s. I also like that I can easily access my rps from every platform: My computer, my phone, my iPad… I’m never without my rp if I choose to do it. If people turn out to be toxic, I block them and move on. I’m very lucky that I’ve only had to do that about five times, but then again I try to very carefully vet out my partners before we do anything together.

This might be a really unpopular opinion but I really hate when people recycle characters. I get it you like the character but isn't half the fun making the character in the first place? What's the point if you're just going to PR the same thing over and over again? I get maybe doing it from your own pool once or twice if you have a personal story you aren't sharing, but I've known some people to just have a rotating stable of three to five characters.

I recycle characters a lot if I’m doing a fandom based rp, but then I generally have a “stable” for each fandom. I like familiarity, and I like trying my characters with different writers because inevitably something unexpected happens and I get to learn more about my characters as I continue to play them.

If I’m not doing a fandom rp, I make a fresh character but might use an existing one as a “skeleton”, if that makes sense. I get very anxious about not breaking the rules of someone else’s world (or my own!), so having that crumb of familiarity puts me at ease.

I JUST had this exact Discord thing happen with a really cool Yokai RP. I was all ready and gearing up then suddenly I woke up one day and literally everything was gone. Now I'm wondering if I should just do it myself, it's really hella frustrating.

I mean, at the end of the day, roleplay is supposed to be a fun hobby, right? We all enjoy that hobby in different ways. I’m not alienating anyone because having access to my writing and time isn’t a right anyone has. I mean, by this logic I could be alienating people who are interested in anime rps purely on the basis that I won’t do anime rps.

I can understand it may take a long time and be frustrating to find a variety of partners who meet your needs (doesn’t require doubling and is happy to play the canons you like), but that may mean some compromises need to be made if you want a bigger pond to cast your line into— Or, stick to your guns, have patience, and find the perfect partner who’s right for you!

If they want to double, and that is what they want to do so make it a requirement, then you have to either conform, talk to them about conforming to your desires [because that is exactly what you want, them to conform to you instead of you to them] or leaving and waiting for a partner with similar taste to appear.

I can sorta see where you're coming from. However, for me, I grew up without technology. I didn't have a cell until I was in my twenties and I don't even have Facebook. If you grew up with tech and naturally know how to maneuver eye pads and all that stuff... That's awesome. But it doesn't work for everyone. Especially those with tech barriers. Technology has really affected the quality of work coming out. It's very disappointing to me, and this is happening on multiple platforms. I kind of despise the discord plotting as an admin. It's so irritating to have people plot out a bunch of crap just for you to tell them it doesn't work for the story. Or that's waaaaaaay too far in the storyline for me to give permission. This is the major problem I have with discord. People use it to communicate but choose not to communicate with everyone. Especially the admin. It's so freaking sad.
But I realize like I'm just clinging on to nostalgia.

It's just a disappointment that it seems everyone went this route. I like being part of a platform that is monitored. I have seen how discord roleplays can be really laid out beautifully but lord...... give me strength. I am not of a generation that likes people having 24-hour access to me. Even if it's in a digital chat. Discord is also a really hard place to think methodically. I'm of a generation where you didn't do a bunch of plotting in a chat. Everyone was equally involved on a platform and it remained on that platform. Heck, I am of a generation that you had like three-hour phone conversations with your girl pal in high school and then didn't talk for the rest of the week. I require breathing room.

I can understand technology comes naturally to some and go team awesome.

Just not for me. But I'm clinging to nostalgia and a very outdated type of role playing. Everything evolves boo

But they want to do it. They want it. By making it an option, you are telling them to conform to what you want. By making it an 'option', you are demanding that you get to pick and thus get what you want.

Oh, I totally get it! WritIng and role play online is all I’ve ever really known (my family’s first operating system was Windows 95, if that gives you any indication of my age range). I never did tabletop rp, so the technology is all I’ve ever known. I hear you on the “availability 24/7” nonsense. Having access to technology certainly does seem to make people more impatient! I’ve had to shut quite a few people down because they saw I was online and expected me to devote all of my attention to our writing, without realizing I might be online for another purpose. That definitely does get grating.

As someone on the other end of the spectrum - growing up a lot alongside technology - I've never seen Discord as "24-hour access to me". I have it on my computer, and I also have it on my phone (which I bring everywhere), and even so, I've never found it hard to get away from.

Don't get me wrong, I do use it daily, but it's not 24-hour access to me, either. Like every message board, forum, OR chat room, it's access to me for precisely as much time I want it to be, because it's an app I can (and do) put away.

So this confuses me a little bit...? Not to come off rude lol. It just gives me the vibe that you might be misplacing your judgement...?

I never did tabletop rp, so the technology is all I’ve ever known. I hear you on the “availability 24/7” nonsense. Having access to technology certainly does seem to make people more impatient! I’ve had to shut quite a few people down because they saw I was online and expected me to devote all of my attention to our writing, without realizing I might be online for another purpose. That definitely does get grating.

I mean, you can do what I do. I have Discord Notifications turned off. Honestly, I have everything turned off on my phone. The only notifications I get are text messages. I don't see Discord, I'm not on Discord, etc, unless I am actually looking at it.

The good news here is that the block button works perfectly for habitual privacy invaders. I don’t mind using it when people continue to pester me for replies after I’ve politely asked them to back off. It keeps my discord rp experience VERY enjoyable and pin free!

As someone on the other end of the spectrum - growing up a lot alongside technology - I've never seen Discord as "24-hour access to me". I have it on my computer, and I also have it on my phone (which I bring everywhere), and even so, I've never found it hard to get away from.

Don't get me wrong, I do use it daily, but it's not 24-hour access to me, either. Like every message board, forum, OR chat room, it's access to me for precisely as much time I want it to be, because it's an app I can (and do) put away.

So this confuses me a little bit...? Not to come off rude lol. It just gives me the vibe that you might be misplacing your judgement...?

It all boils down to what the brain can process in the end. By the way, you didn't sound rude at all. It can be confusing but this is how the brain works. If you are not exposed to something early enough like you know kids today really grasp technology like a second skin. But that small age gap of not being exposed to that tech at a prime age (say your teens) it's hard for your brain to process new things. It sounds so ageist but it's true. My ageing brain can not comprehend the new tech coming out today. And that's okay. It just means parts of my brain naturally take longer to learn new tasks. And I mean I'm not that old. I just missed that prime exposure time to be comfortable with it.

Yeah but it's people having access to me. Even though it's digital I feel a bit...like my privacy is invaded? I mean I find texting weird so like I'm an oddball that's for certain lol I embrace this. I am that old man living in the mountains refusing to accept the new age
