Experiences Whats making you angry today? Rp pet peeves

that sounds more like GM playing favorites then a balance issue
It'd only be an issue of favoritism if that way of balancing was applied to a selected few. Some people just genuinely believe that is how you balance characters. Just throw on enough weaknesses, no matter how trivial or overly vauge they are, and *bam* instantly balanced.

Don't get me wrong, my issue isn't with people balancing their roleplays as a whole, it's that a lot of people only put effort into making it look like they're running a balanced rp so that they can, presumably, go into threads like this one and feel all smug about how they don't allow overpowered characters in their roleplays.

I don’t think that’s a thing. I mean sometimes people don’t understand roleplay mechanics well enough to run a group roleplay effectively. But that’s a lack of experience as a GM talking not a matter of smugness.

I have certainly seen people who don’t understand how weakness work try to join roleplays. If they are allowed to participate at all it is a mark of either favoritism or an inexperienced GM.

Its not because the GM thinks those characters are balanced. I would go out on a limb and say the person playing them knows their characters aren’t balanced either. They’re just taking advantage of the GM to get their own way. Whether that’s through a friendship/favoritism or because the GM is too inexperienced to enforce proper character creation is kinda a case by case thing.

when I did groups I pretty much exclusively did superhero type stories. So power balances was literally the first thing I had to learn to get right. And it was the biggest headache when trying to find new players. Cuz you always had a few people who wanted to try to work around the rules in some way.

I'm so tired of trying to accommodate new people in my group RPs when they won't even put in any amount of effort to participate. When someone new puts in the effort to make a profile and talk to us OOC, I'm so excited. I do everything I can to get them started on the story, even so far as to change the trajectory of things so they can enter the story in a way that makes sense.

And then they just... Don't. Ever. Post. Radio silence. Why? Why go through the effort? I'm so tired of people wasting my time.

Interest checks/starters written in tiny text that's impossible to read.
Came here to say this but then was like 'this mfer got their post in small text and Ill look like an asshole'. Then read the message. But for real though why is this a thing?

I also don't understand typing in only lower case for aesthetic. Wtf does that even mean? Lower cases don't look better than regular letters. And it's always the same people that only use small fonts.

People who expect you to instantly reply on IM. This is after I politely mention that it may take me a bit to reply due to being busy. Pestering me will not make me reply any faster. Patience.

I hate people who justify their lack of posts with shit like "I've just been so busy lately" only to instantly join 5 new fucking roleplays.

I dont like it when there is a 18+ plus Roleplay. I understand you want to write with more mature people but it makes me feel as a writer that im not good enough and my writing is bad. It makes me feel like im not good enough to be on the site. I dont know if that makes any sence but thats how I feel.

As an almost 23-year-old mother, there is a reason. For me, since I am a mother, I want to keep from acting like a mom to the younger kids here, unless they want that, I guess. ^^''''' But for others who are around my age, it is easier for them to click with those of the same age. Plus, it reduces the amount of awkwardness they'll receive and feel. It isn't that your writing sucks or the plots are not that great (though sometimes it can be, I have been on multiple sites were it is not favorable for an adult to RP with someone younger than them due to lack of experience and maturity and knowledge on sensitive subjects (but this is uncommon with even people my age)), but it makes them feel awkward that they are conversing with someone who is as young as their younger sibling. Plus, I have heard of kids getting into trouble by their parents when the parents realize they are RPing with someone over the age of 18, fear the worst, and then ground them, and then the adult is accused of stuff with their kid. Even when nothing bad has happened at all. It's just a precautionary thing to avoid awkwardness and reputation tankers.

I don't even know what the fuck to call this. But whenever I try to break into a fandom or other kind of idea to try and connect with a broader range of RPers, I always wind up interested in aspects/timelines/characters that aren't very popular. Like, I swear to fucking god, I'm NOT doing this shit on purpose. Wtf is it with me and happening upon something that interests me, only for it to be considered niche?

Like, I know a lot of my older, favorite interests are kinda niche. I've come to terms with that. But then I'm like, Hey, I'll try getting into that thing a lot of other people are doing. Lemme go find something within that, that I like. and when I find it, it winds up being some wayward thing that no one is really into. And what they ARE all into is like so goddamn BASIC that I really have no interest in that aspect at all.

What grins my gears? Very simple.

You’ve been working on an rp with someone for a while now, the plot is alright and you’re ready to play. But then they just give you stuff like ‘You’re character goes into a bar. Are they wearing (CLOTHES XYZ)?’ And you can really only give them an answer, and then when you point out after 5 of these that is is less RP, more Q&A, they apologise and take a break. That’s all fine and dandy, you think to yourself, they won’t try that again now that I’ve pointed it out!

Next day arrives and you receive a message from them asking for an RP, and then when they explain it and you get the ball rolling, it’s the same as the previous day. Not only that, but it’s not only the exact same issue as the previous day, but it’s on a completely different topic in a completely different genre! And then when you point out the fact that you wanted a dark fantasy RP and not a Q&A with bloody MLP characters, they have the balls to call you a jackass for trying to railroad the plot! Oh, I’m sorry! I didn’t realise that you took my invite to one specific RP that didn’t fly to well as an invite to hit me up whenever the hell you want with some BS ideas that I don’t want, in a format that I previously said I wouldn’t want to do.

And then they block you.

They God. Damn. Block. You.

edit— Upon further consideration, this wasn’t ‘very simple’. My bad Folks.

This keeps happening to be a lot of times when I find a decent partner, they'll only roleplay over 18 people. A d then another pet peeve of mine is that I leave because I'm busy and then come back to find them offline. *insert screaming emoji*

I treat most places (RpNation and conversations within) as forums. I won't reply right away and if I'm offline, then they'll make a post knowing I'll see it later. Just because someone is offline doesn't mean that it is the end of the world. Just have patience.

Though, I can understand the first point. We just feel safer for everyone involved if we stuck to our peers, which can be difficult when finding an RP partner. I personally don't care what age people are, just as long as they are mature enough to understand that, while the style of RP I have is flexible, I prefer a paragraph of at least 4 sentences so I have something to go off of, and I also prefer fandom RPs with Pokemon and other such stuff I should really make an interest check for. XD

People RP like that? xD

Anyway, an RP pet peeve of mine.... I mean, not getting facts straight about a fandom that is super easy to look up. Takes less than 10 seconds to look up if Spearow can learn Wing Attack or Gust. Spoiler alert: They can't learn those moves and, during an episode Riding the Winds of Change! during the Diamond and Pearl anime series, when a group of Gligar led by a Gliscor was wreaking havoc and a bunch of bird Pokemon used Gust to get rid of them. Erroneously, Spearow used Gust when it couldn't learn such a move. However, I can chalk it up to lending some help in moving a bunch of air with its flaps. I wouldn't consider it ever having properly used Gust though.

But anyway, yea, pet peeve is not looking something up that is prevalent on the internet. xD

Just leave a reply, and when they are back online they'll get back to you.
Not all RP has to be done imminently. In fact, some people (such as myself) don't like to reply in this form. I like to leave one reply every other day or so., in multi-para format. And my partner(s) can get to it at their leisure and reply in kind. It would absolutely annoy me to be expected to respond immediately to someone dropping a few lines on me, back and forth and back and forth...

Okay that's the most helpful advice I've gotten.

My brain has two modes:

OH GOD I HAVE TO RESPOND TO THIS RP ITS BEEN TWO DAYS AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH

or

I’m so bored I caught up with all of my roleplay responses what am I supposed to do??? 😭😭😭😭😭

I'm definitely the latter right now. I've been trying to find one more partner, but no luck so far.

Kind of sucks that a lot of the interest checks right now with stuff that actually interests me are MxM. MxM is like the one romantic pairing I don't do due to bad experiences with it.

I kinda share this sentiment. I even exclude "modern AU" fanfiction from search when looking for something to read XD

The only modern real world based rp I can borderline tolerate is when they have some supernatural elements.

I hate how in a lot of fandom roleplays people tend to use how ever strong the canon characters currently is to judge how strong their characters should be regardless of the plot.

I'm tired of joining, to use an example, One Piece roleplays where everyone is written like they can go toe to toe with the likes of Big Mom and Kaido despite just starting their journey.

Merciless Medic Merciless Medic in fairness sometimes creatives just make a mistake when it comes to lore. JKR is kinda famous for saying stuff that is either illogical in general or run counter to her established lore.

And depending on which particular wiki you read you might get several different answers to the same question.

So from a roleplay perspective I tend to let people interpret canon however they want. As long as you can give me a clear reasoning for whatever you wrote I’m good.

I understand that. XD I mean, granted JKR says stuff to undermine her own success because I guess she doesn't like how popular her and her book series are??? At least, that's what I would think. There is no other reason for her to make gross statements about her own work unless she just absolutely hates being as popular as she is. Though, the Pokemon anime (especially the first two seasons) are INCREDIBLY fraught with mistakes. While it may not be as obvious or jarring or as frequent now, they are still there (Like Brock calling a Furret a Ground-Type....... BOI, it still acts like a Normal-Type in type weakness and resistances XD and the games never show Furret be a Ground-Type.... Which is why I don't trust the anime as far as I can throw watch it, which isn't far).

As for the wiki thing, yea there's PokemonDatabase, Psypokes, Serebii, and Bulbapedia. There's even more wikis than just those things, but I usually explicitly state to look up Bulbapedia, since they are the most reliable resource I have found unlike the others I mentioned. They rarely, if ever, have any errors (I mean, they have one in terms of where to find Dragonair in HGSS, but that's locations of Pokemon, and their Max Raid Dens for Crown Tundra need to be updated). Plus, the layout for me is just easier to look at. xD

If it's interpreting canon like canon characters and their personalities, then I don't mind. Or if they interpret the area and canon lore and everything else. But it's the Pokemon moves and abilities that I want to have at least to be accurate to the Pokemon who can learn/have it. I have seen a Squirtle use Flamethrower.

Never again.

I just prefer to have some continuity to the world I'm living in and if I'm super lax on everything else, I prefer to be a stickler for at least a few things, and that being the moves and abilities. If they can give me a reason as to why the Pokemon can use a move though, then yes I'll let them. If it's an honest mistake due to the wiki they are on, then that's on the wiki, not on them. I won't bash them for that. I'd be pretty upset if the site I've been using for years and had no issues has an error that I didn't notice until pointed out.

Though, it's been stated that Spearow has frail wings and they have low stamina in their dex entries, having to flap twice as fast as normal birds due to their small wings and small pectoral muscles (plus, if the Pidgey line have the potential to have Big Pecks (prevents lowering Attack due to their pride for their pectoral muscles from how thicc and stronk they are) and the Spearow line cannot, that says something). While Fearow has a longer wingspan and has better stamina, the muscles aren't as strong as that of Pidgeot. Fearow is more adept at swooping in and using their beak anyway, and, for a meta reason, they don't want the two lines to be too similar.
