Viewpoint What is one thing you wish to roleplay, without getting judged?

So, I don't know if this is something I actually get judged for, or if it's just my anxiety kicking in--

But I really like writing characters with dark, tragic backstories, and I love when my partners' characters also have a sad story. I'm talking like parental neglect, different kinds of abuse, struggles with addiction, tragic loss of people they love-- that sort of stuff (I don't like playing out abuse in the actual story, it's just that a few of my favorite characters have a history with it.)

I understand why people might be hesitant to play with this kind of character, but I'm a pretty experienced writer and I feel confident that I can handle these subjects respectfully and write them in a compelling way. And I think I'm pretty good at finding just the right amount of angst-- enough to be realistic and compelling, but not so much that I'm roleplaying a pity party.

For ages I've had an idea for a long term RP that involves a couple in the ancient world essentially cheating death and then getting punished for it by the gods. Their punishment involves being forever doomed to fall in love in every lifetime and then somehow dying, thus tearing them apart. This would occur continuously up until the present day when they finally figure out what is going on, prompting them to go on a quest to somehow reverse the curse before they fall in love again and die. I figured it would be a super fun premise due to my love of extensive character development, history, and the star-crossed lovers trope. It's also not so much that I feel like I'll get judged for RPing it, but more so that I've never been able to find a committed partner.

That's pretty similar to part of the plot of Seven Deadly Sins

m/f romance where I get to play the woman. whenever I rp, I either end up playing the male 'love interests' for my friends' characters, or getting drawn into f/f ships when I do play a woman. both of which I enjoy, don't get me wrong! but sometimes *I* want to be the one to play against the mysterious, charming older man with a tragic backstory, you know? :')

People generally argue that such characters have no risk, but here's the thing about immortality - it's a heavy price and living in eternity generally isn't the best of bets. Sure, sometimes it varies from people to people, but you know... it's something worth playing around with at least once.

I actually had a plot that has immortality as a major theme. Only one of the main characters is immortal, though.

I've done this with characters. Not so much that they can't die, just that they have much, much .much longer lifespans than the average human. And if you play a character who's back story involves major friendship arcs with people with normal lifespans the implications loosing these friends have due to basic life rules can be interesting. Do they become jaded, depressed, more determined to protect people who have fleeting lives? Pretty fun character mental development.

So my understanding is the “no immortals” thing is less about the specific character trait and more a broader category of “roleplay is not a competition, you don’t get a cookie for winning Karen.”

It’s essentially the problem with Superman, he only works if the focus of the story isn’t “Superman is god powerful and can defeat all the bad guys single handedly every time”. Cuz that’s both boring to read and also misses the point of the character.

Superman does best when he’s either focusing on his compassion/immigrant/refugee allegory OR when he’s on a team and has to learn humility.

So I feel like if I see immortal beings in a story the only time I roll my eyes is when it’s a fighting style story and it’s obvious that being immortal is just an excuse to make sure the character can’t loose.

I do a lot of fantasy and I definitely love deconstructing fantasy tropes (immortal vampire and monstrous werewolf) and reconceptualizing them. But I’m also fine if a person just wants to go full cinematic and make some kind of god powerful horror beast. As long as it fits the stakes in the story being written.

This is definitely a niche idea and may be seen as insensitive to some, but I have long had a fascination with extreme weather (hurricanes, tornadoes, etc.) and those who chase it. I recently re-watched the movie "Twister" and I thought that it could be interesting to write a story that follows a group of amateur storm chasers in the 1980's or 1990's, basically in a time where weather radar systems were just not as sophisticated as they are now. I like these sorts of realistic settings that place average people into extraordinary situations. I think biggest obstacle to this kind of story is trying to derive a plot that ties it all altogether rather than just being a group of people encountering these storms. Like, that would get repetitive after awhile.

An alternative idea I had, along similar lines, was a story following a group of firefighters. I know that sort of story is common with cop characters, but firefighters are way cooler, lol.

probably darker themes, too. i just don't want people to assume that i'm roleplaying it for weird reasons- i find it cathartic to roleplay and i like getting to the more recovery-focused parts, too!

i don’t do fandom rps anymore, but when i started rping, it was with warrior cats way back when. (a common thing, i’d imagine)

i’ve always wanted to kind of do a warrior cats rp with all of my current writing experience. relive my past rp experiences better than ever before! so much cat drama!

but i don’t think i would be able to do this in reality ever, but it is fun to think about doing now and then

Romance is like the most popular genre of roleplay. Spider-Man is one of the more popular superheroes. Especially now with his movie just coming out

This! I love the Blue and Orange morality trope. That idea of a thought process that operates on a different string of logic than the norm but makes sense from an alien perspective.

I was ableto somewhat texplore this concept recently and it was probably some of the most fun I've had creating a new character in a long time.

the other issue is i like to involve different things like what if tony was secretly alive after endgame
Or what if she got her identity revealed instead of peter? And what if the spell didnt work but instead peter is back days ago when he was with his lawyer?
These things sometimes they help other times idk if it does

I love darker themes in RPs, to the extent that it's realistic and not just "gore for the sake of gore"—but as of right now? I've really been craving an RP featuring a polyamorous romance, and not those cliché love triangle tropes (although that might be fun too), but a real, mutually-consenting poly relationship just so that my partner and I can have 3x the fun exploring relationship dynamics.

I didn't think it'd be so rare to find someone who's open to poly ships, but I haven't found very many, and even less have actually wanted to go down that route with me ):

I'd actually like to RP one of my ideas. Nobody ever wants to RP my ideas. Maybe I should make two accounts and develop multiple personalities so I can RP with my other self.

Oh man, when I was doing pot (kicked it now thankfully) I had created a group in Facebook with me and a second account so I can roleplay these ideas that nobody ever wants to. It was fun while it lasted but if we are anything alike you will eventually see it after some years, cringe and delete the entire thing then curse the moment you did and the hours upon hours lost for nothing. Save yourself now and don't do the same.
