Ana took the notebook back and held it to her chest. She flinched at his words and squirmed in the seat. IF she weren’t tucked into a corner she probably would have tried to move away. He was actually scaring her a little bit and she didn’t like that. She knew he meant well or at least hoped he meant well, but his words were just so violent. She didn’t even want to respond to the question. Nothing she said would end well. She would either have to lie and possibly get someone else in trouble, tell the truth, which would end with her getting in trouble, or be vague and probably still get in trouble with Vanden. She scribbled a little something on a corner of the paper and tore it out before handing it to him.
I’m fine. Please just go have fun.
She put the notebook down and threw the pen back in her bag. Hopefully this would deter him from asking anything else because she really didn’t want to answer. She curled up as much as she could on the thin little bleacher and turned away from him as much as she could. It was definitely not comfortable, but the only other thing she could do was leave, which would only make things worse.

The rest of the day and going into Monday were quite boring. Regular classes with boring subjects that held no interest for her. But, when she found out about the parent teacher meeting and subsequently the flag tag game for the students. She was absolutely pumped. She hadn’t really gotten to meet a lot of the kids there and always looked for any kind of game. Convincing her mother to go was another matter altogether, though.
“I don’t know Sammy. You know I have so much to do and…” Samantha let out a dramatic sigh and flopped down on her mother’s bed as Avery paced the room. “Mom, this is the perfect time to go. You haven’t done anything but work since we got here. You need to take some kind of break. Plus, maybe you’ll make some new friends here.” Avery shot her daughter a glare, which only made the girl smile. “Please mom, pleeeaaaase.” She put on the puppy dog eyes as she looked at her mother. Avery crossed her arms and turned away, huffing as she tapped her foot against the carpeted floor.
“Don’t you dare Samantha Gean. You can’t keep doing that.” But even though, a soft smile curled her lips up. Samantha sat up on the bed and scooted to the edge before slipping off and walking over to her mom. “Come on, you might even meet some cute single dads.” Samantha was joking, face lit up with a smile, but her mother stiffened. “Don’t you dare… How could you even?..” Samantha cut off her mother with a tight hug. “Dad would want you to be happy. I do too. Please mom.” Avery hugged her daughter back, finally relenting, although not happy about it.
When the end of Tuesday finally came, Sam couldn’t be more excited. She had taken the time to wash her outfit from Sunday and tied her still white and blue hair into a ponytail. She blathered onto her mom the entire car ride about how the girls were going to kick ass in the game. She couldn’t wait to see who all showed up. When they finally got to the gym, Samantha gave one last hug to her mom before opening up the doors. Immediately she saw they had already separated, a couple boys in thee center and a slightly larger group of girls standing on one end of the gym. She immediately went over to the bin with all the jerseys and flags and quickly pulled a yellow jersey over her head before tying on the flags.
A bright smile lit up her face as she jogged over to the girls. “Well hello ladies. I hope you’re all ready to kick some ass! There’s no way we’re going to let a few boys take us down, right?” She was probably a little too excited mixed with a little bit of nervous. But, she was indeed so excited. Excited enough that she spoke the last part loud enough for the boys to hear, the smile on her face turning into a confident smirk as she shot them a glance. “I’m Samantha by the way. Sam for short.” She turned back to the girls and held her hand out for each of them before pointing at the girl who was already stretching and immediately followed suit. “Good idea.”
Meanwhile, Avery nervously made her way to the room with all the parents. Already she was feeling nervous, which was silly considering her age. She mostly just felt out of place. Samantha had insisted on dressing her up for the meeting, even though she was sure it was casual. They argued relentlessly for what seemed like hours, before they were both begrudgingly satisfied with an outfit.
When she got to the room, she peered in to see that there were several parents already standing around, mostly a larger group of ladies. She was surprised to see very few men around, though she supposed that’s usually how it was. Mothers often took a much greater interest in PTA things than the father’s did. A twinge of pain ran through her and she automatically put on a smile before walking into the room.
She wasn’t one to make a lot of introductions, so she mostly stayed on the edge of the room, waiting for the meeting to start.
