Thankfully this European-looking kid with a strong chin line and an explosive personality came stomping up the steps. ‘American streets are stupid, and the air hurts my face!’ he said in his incredible accent and barged inside like he owned the place.
Now Neck Tie was inside and mingling with all the other life forms but he recognised nobody and nobody recognised him without his tie. This wasn’t necessarily a bad thing. He enjoyed being invisible for a change.
The music filled the large room so he could hardly hear himself think. But he found himself milling around and managing to feel claustrophobic in a house this big. Everything was so much bigger and better in America than in his hometown — the school, the houses, the roads, even the people — but somehow he craved the smaller spaces. He had five kids show up for his last birthday party and he thought that was already the best thing in the world. He wasn’t a loner by any means. At least he never thought himself as such, not until now.
The other thing he was craving was nachos, and there was quite a bit of that stuff going around. Neck Tie helped himself to a bite here and there. No one seemed to mind him gobbling up all the snacks. No one seemed to notice it for that matter. He thought if a stranger showed up at his party and ate all the nachos his parents would have called the cops. Then he poured himself a Fanta. Then he was dipping nachos in his Fanta because why not?
Some of the older kids were settling down for party games. There was no place to sit anywhere, which was all the excuse he ever needed to keep exploring. Neck Tie wiped the crumbs off his mouth and went around looking for other dips to try out. For the time being the sour cream dip was his favourite, but he was open to having his mind changed.
