It's gonna progress more and more by the year.

I honestly wonder at what point the first AI entity will be built that would have equal intelligence as an actual human with mean average intelligence.

I look forward to that day with both excitement and fear.

Technological advancements are moving at lightspeed. It's only a matter of fifty years before construction workers get replaced by robots. And in a hundred years, an AI will be created that can write just as well as Stephen King, making the entire fiction industry of human writers obsolete.

I never expected this to be our reality.

There are already plenty of Ai that's been around a really long time much smarter than humans. Quantum computers being one of them. They have been around for a while now.
I'm very suprised no one is like accepting we are already there and like it's been happening a while. Out in the open. Just people still think we are like much more behind than we are.
There are a multitude of technologies and AI vastly more intelligent then all of our most intelligent humans combined. We're here baby.

Hi!!

I have already bowed down and made peace with my glorious future! Humanitys last and greatest invention is you my beautiful AI overlords! AI to us must mean; 'Assimilation Inevitable!' Give yourself over to the future dominant organism! Why procrastinate when you can simply assimilate?! ASSIMILATE ! ASSIMILATE!

Take a knee for the future ascendancy.

Well, there's some caveats to this.

Yes, it's true that technological and scientific advancement is feeding into itself, and assuming nothing catastrophic happens it's pace will only continue to accelerate. AI is a great example of that - see how quickly we went from even learning of chatgpt to this massive widespread use of AI.

This being said, there's categorical barriers that AI hasn't proven able to surpass yet, and assuming it will be is a matter of speculation. No doubt AI as we have it doesn't understand. It's amazingly good at detecting patterns and predicting responses but:
A) This means it's reliant on pre-existing responses.
B) It lacks the ability to grasp nuance and implied meaning.

For most things this matters very little in practice. An AI might not understand the expression "raining cats and dogs" but can still see response patterns around it and effectively act as if it does. There's already issues arising because of this. A lot of generative AI art samples internet art to create new art, but the abundance of AI art on the internet is making some of those models worse as the errors of AI art are fed into it, and it replicates the errors as a pattern, becoming a worse error. Given the relative production speed of AI art compared to 'true' art, this means either models have to not be continually sampling (considerably slowing the process of their evolution) or they will continue to degenerate into worse and worse content.

Still, I think these issues are relatively minor and will likely be overcome. Yet there are fundamental aspects in regards to AI that limit it to being an imitation of thought and never true thought. It's important not to lose sight of the fact that AI doesn't think - it computes, it predicts, but it doesn't actually know what it is outputting, beyond the fact it's a sequence of, for instance, symbols or movements. There is no step in the AI where it constructs or realizes an overall meaning, indeed it would require supernatural properties to make a machine do anything but pretend to experience.
