Welcome To Shearport

People in a changeling game about running a coastal B&B with wolfmen in the kitchen and missing kids in the forest are asking "Is that too weird?"

Naw, bro. It's not too weird.

I hope your "Not getting alerts" problem isn't spreading. I checked an alert about Razoga's latest post, but it didn't mention yours, Fuzz..

I wanted to do a roll for Sackcloth analyzing the shoe to try and get whatever details he can from it using his craftsman's expertise, which seemed like an obvious Int + Crafts roll. However, I was wondering if there might be any further details he might gather from it that would require an Investigation roll. Not sure if that's Int or Wits + Investigation but I rolled with the larger dice pool and the usual way I've dealt with that in the past is just subtract whatever dice come up on the end of the roll first if the smaller dice pool is used. In this case, it's a one die difference, and it wouldn't change it either way.

Not sure if Crafts roll provides a bonus of any sort there. Either way, he'd be looking for details in terms of things like how the shoe was used and such. Rubber, such as that used on the soles of shoes, can often absorb water and, in doing so, swell and become more vulnerable to erosion by use, so if this is someone who regularly walks in mud (i.e. someone who goes into the forest a lot), they'd see a difference in erosion. A person's gait helps determine shoe erosion patterns, too, as does how tightly the shoe fits; an eroded heel indicates a looser fitting shoe, or an awkward gait, while heavy erosion on the front of the sole can indicate the shoe has been used to run in a lot. Scraping along the outer edges indicates a rolling type of gait, etc. All this and more can help identify the age, body type, movement style, habits, etc. of the wearer, and what's stuck in the sole of the shoe can indicate where they went last.

So, yeah, this is all stuff he'd look for. CSI: Arcadia!

@The Fuzz

Quick question for you, though I'm not sure if I'm phrasing it just right; would Court affiliated Changelings be able to...sense the respective emotions they feed on?

I'm....not sure.

Wait. Aha. Logic!

Contracts of Summer allow you to sense rage. If Summer Courtiers need to use a Contract to sense their affiliated emotion, then they probably cannot sense it without using such a Contract.

So.....prolly not, no.

@Axelgear

I lol'd.

Hurrah for logic!

Excellent. Imma crawl through my Changeling books a bit now.

Also, also; is *everyone* in the kitchen now, including the two mortal guests?

Or is there a kinda separated seating area next to the main cooking area? B&Bs come in all sort of formats...

Ah, I was operating with the idea that there's a small but definitely separate dining area for guests. It's where the trough of muesli is, right beside the gallon of milk which is somehow below freezing point but still liquid.

Fuck yeah, B&B's!

Yeah, I thought the trio of weird blokes with the shoe were in an adjacent hallway while the guests and other staff sit in the kitchen/dining room.

Yeah, me too; hence Sackcloth shooing Red about and all.

Edit: I feel compelled to note that cherry blossoms aren't really native to the US, which gives us a neat clue. They're a Japanese tree, primarily, so if you find them anywhere else in the world (besides maybe parts of Russia and Asia), they're inevitably tended. There's also a variety of cherry blossom that actually does bloom in the fall and winter; the Winter Sakura. That means that, if they're anywhere in Shearport, we might be looking at a new Hedge gate. If not, we're hunting in the Hedge for an oddity.

Sackcloth's pretty damn knowledgeable about nature (Survival 3), so I feel compelled to roll to see if he'd know any of this. Also, to see if he's aware of anywhere nearby that might have cherry blossoms.

Naturally, I'd nudge @Grey for this, since Lucas is probably far more familiar with the local woodlands and parks than Sackcloth.

Yeah, I wanted to have Lita do a check to see if she'd noticed/remembered any cherry trees around, as she's probably spent most of the last year or so exploring the area. Also, check to see if she recognizes the smell? It's been a while and a can't remember all the rolls.

Sage may have relevant skills useful to you guys; she's a beachcomber of sorts, but substitute "Hedge" for "beach".

Is Sage in the same room as Red, Sackcloth, and Lita at the moment? A little confused on which portion of the group she's speaking to.

I'll try and get a post up tonight when I get home. Out and about now and sleep deprivation and six straight hours of classes a day is kicking my butt a bit.

She headed to the door to see why there was so much worried whispering in the back hallway. I'm guessing from the rest of the input, that she can see into the kitchen as well.

As far as I can gather, there's a kitchen preparation area, a small back hall attached, and the dining area just in front.

Oh, never said where Red was gonna spend the rest of the day. Well...Imagine it's going to be investigating this missing girl business. If Lita's insistent on checking out her place first, he'd go there, but he'd also want to check out that gardening center and any places the others turn up.

Unless someone suggests something else, like something that would be best checked out now just simply so it can be checked off the list, Sackcloth will wait for Lucas and spend his time preparing the bunkhouse for the hikers.

Cool. Lucas is talking to the deputy, Sackcloth is prepping stuff at the B&B (responsible Sackcloth!) Liam is presumably digging out his suit, Sage is hopefully getting filled in on what the hell is going on (missing child in the Hedge, look at this adorable little shoe.....) and Lita and Red are about to go into the Hedge to take a look at this weird garden place that Lita remembers stumbling across.

Entirely unrelated thing:

The God-Machine is the coldest iron. The God-Machine is iron that forged itself. It is without passion or mercy, warmth or hate. It is order and logic reified. It is therefore by its sufferance that the Gentry might enter our world at all, and they are restricted by ancient pledges to the Machine for the privilege. They cannot be compelled to directly serve its plans, but neither will they touch its anointed for fear of Angels with faces of gold and fists of iron, and wings of humming force that carry them through the Hedge.

Just a note, I'm waiting on Sage/Liam; Sackcloth explained the deets to them and all.
Formulating now.

Yet more questions for our benevolent story teller!

On a scale of one to do not even remotely consider splitting the party; how dangerous is the local Hedge? Will groups of two be safe enough? I gave Sage some Hedge-related skills but am not sure as to what everyone else invested in.

Wandering around in the local Hedge alone is only for people who have the capability to fight or evade. Groups better.

Cool cool.

Since it's possible two of the party may wander off there together, I figured it couldn't hurt to know if Sage would be like "oh yes, that's fine" or "oh lawd nononono..."

Lita has a little fight but mostly evade. Lots of athletics. And lots of Hearth, so fate manipulation that's good for getting out of sticky spaces.
