Hanna had been sitting quietly, enjoying her steak. This school was pretty good, and best of all, they gave them steak, not some cheap cardboard. Hanna simply sat quietly, and enjoyed the conversations going on. and then bully no.1 and bully no.2 walked over. And then they proceeded to talk shit, oh, and they knew how to talk some shit. Hanna stood up, and stared at the one who kicked Usami's walking stick, Sparks were practically dripping from Hanna's hands, but she calmed herself. "They're trying to get you angry, play it cool, don't be the first one to throw the punch!" Hanna told herself. She would walk over, and pick up Usami's walking stick, and hand it to her.

"Watch where you're going, idiot " Hanna told the girl who had kicked Usami's walking stick. Hanna then walked over to the regular student who slammed his hands on the lunch table, and gave him a cold look. "I don't know who you are, but as you can see here, we ain't on no high horses, we're eating lunch. But you seem to think you're the boss around here, so let me make something clear..." Hanna said while approaching him. in a swift movement, Hanna grabbed the bully by the collar, her hands on fire at this point. "Come around here again, pretending like you run something, and I'll fucking make sure that you and your friends will Never speak ever again, understand?" She said in a very threatening tone. Hanna's hands would burn through the students shirt, "Now get on outta here."

Elise Friedhelm.

“Uh?” Still stupefied by Nora’s sudden appearance, Elise let out an unintelligible sound when Cleo stood to leave. Gradually, her brain began to catch up, and she waved dumbly towards Cleo’s retreating back. “Right, see you there.”

As Elise debated between returning to her charred steak or doing a more thorough check of Nora’s status, her thoughts were interrupted by a spiteful voice which cut through the crowd. With a hint of confused panic lacing her eyes, Elise watched, shocked, as Usami was thrown to the floor and a vaguely familiar Junior slammed his hands down directly in front of her. However, by the time her eyes narrowed to return the boy’s challenging gaze, Hanna had already picked him off of the table by his collar.

Elise sighed once her nerves were back in order, as if used to seeing such a scene. She plucked her fork off of her plate and walked towards Hanna with measured steps. Without further hesitation, she placed her free hand on Hanna’s shoulder and gave it a light squeeze to encourage her to release her hold on the boy’s collar.

"Hanna, don't get yourself expelled over some grade school bullying," she said, her voice still gentle and even. It was a half-truth, but Elise was sure the fiery girl wouldn't accept her other reason. Though this confrontation was led by a student incapable of much more than petty schemes like this, they were still Juniors in the end. In terms of experience, they were outclassed. Though they weren't set to lose, the situation would get messy quick.

Smug, cowardly good-for-nothings.

In spite of her controlled tone, Elise's gaze burned like dry ice. The timing between Cleo's leave and the Juniors’ entrance likely wasn't a coincidence. Between her sharp tongue and equally as destructive combat prowess, the white-haired girl wasn’t a target of easy picking. A group of Freshmen and someone known for her low offensive aptitude, however, were a different ballgame. Though she felt guilty for being incapable of taking better care of her underclassmen, the bitterness of being looked down upon and having her old friends’ names slandered quickly overtook that shame.

“For someone who speaks of fallen comrades, you sure like disrespecting the deceased.” Elise’s cold gaze panned towards Usami before they sharply flicked back towards her aggressor. “Is that fun? Is your pride fed by kicking down people who are incapable of acting out against you due to a disability or being six feet under? Pity.”

As if to assert some level of authority, the ash blonde raised her hand to point her fork towards the boy’s face. However, her grip on Hanna’s shoulder tightened ever-so-slightly. It was a bluff. She didn’t know how Hanna or the Junior would act going forward, but she remained a foot-and-a-half’s distance away from the boy in preparation to yank Hanna’ backwards and use her fork to set up a boundary on a moment’s notice.

“We’ve never once called ourselves heroes, nor have we called our fallen comrades martyrs. If you want to be considered special, then obtain that through your own merit instead of wasting your time on brainless fights like this.” Elise paused briefly, as if realizing something, and then released a hollow laugh. “That is, if you can. Evidently, you’ve already proven yourself incapable of that, considering no one here has heard of your name except you and your equally pathetic friends.”

She knew her words were likely to spark a fight—even a physical altercation, perhaps. In the past, she might have hidden behind Luri or Alvelyn or attempted to resolve the situation peacefully. However, if there was one thing she couldn’t ever forgive, it was strangers who squealed about some dirty picture they had painted of her cherished teammates.

The students and hunters of Vehemen had all been given a choice. If they so wished, most of them could have lived their lives peacefully as ordinary civilians. But what about the otherworlders? None of them had ever asked to be thrown into such a dangerous world. It was the people of this strange world who had dragged them to the academy and raised them up on a pedestal. However, the moment something went awry, they chose to blame and crucify them instead of hunting down the truth. All because it was far simpler to find an easy scapegoat. After all, they were merely strangers from another world. But they were...

Weren’t they people too?

~Frederika von Eisenhart~
-- Targetted Vehemen Academy Student --

Status: Nominal
Wearing: Vehemen Academy School Uniform (women's)
Location: Vehemen Academy, Dining Hall

---

Ravyn's dismissal of Frederika's advice due to her food preferences raised a brow on the latter's visage, but as Elise made no comment against it either, the blonde girl returned to her own meal with a wordless murmur. She remained concerned as to Rayvn's energy levels, particularly if, as Cleo put it, their battle instructor liked to make these assessments "harder than it should be", and doubly so if the girl had a low basal metabolism rate. Still, forcing someone to eat fell far afield of actions she was comfortable with given the circumstance. As it was, the sudden appearance of Nora would redirect her mental processes anyway as the gray-haired girl, who she literally had been wondering the fate of a few moment prior, seemingly appeared out of thin air to deposit herself at their table. Much like Elise, a startled "...Nora?" was all she could muster to her lips, surprise teneble as she stood to closer inspect the girl. "You've... returned," she said, voice quickly returning to its usual controlled timbre. "I'm relieved. Where did you-?" she began, only to be cut off as yet another situation unfolded.

The sounds of bullies were universal, whether it be a posh upper-crust private school, an inner-city public school, or a fantastic school for monster-slaying. The sneers, the exaggerated motions and postures, the intonation both sing-song and offensive at the same time; these hallmarks of hooliganism were the same no matter where one went, and as she watched the trio of trouble-makers make their way towards them, her eyes narrowed in recognition of their ill nature. Initially she held tight, standing in place; the earlier recognition of her by the surrounding crowd (seriously, a model?) had more than likely raised her presence on their collective radar, so any manner of discreet movement on her part was pretty much an impossibility at this point.

Instead, she took full advantage of their awareness of her the instant Usami was thrown to the ground, as she began a slow, deliberate walk around the table towards the collected group, exaggerating her footfalls at every step to make sure they could hear the metered, machine-like tread of her loafers upon the ground. As Hanna returned Usami's walking stick to her, tossing off an epithet to the offending ruffian as she then went off to deal with the table slammer, Frederika interposed herself between the fallen girl and her assailant with a final click of her heels, her body positioned sideways, gaze seemingly averted from the girl to whom she spoke. "I know not under what misguided sense of authority you operate to pass judgement on us like this," she began in a low tone, "but the decision of whether we are suitable as hunters in the future exists at the pleasure of the professors and the administration alone. And before you make the incredibly ill-thought out choice of taking one single additional step towards this poor girl you have cast to the floor, allow me to state this," she said, gently beginning to tug the gloves off of her arms. "If I am willing to charge straight at a 10 meter tall Poex with nothing more than a signpost, suffering an unimaginably severe wound and facing near hopeless odds in order to protect a set of strangers..."

She tossed the gloves aside, raised one foot high in the air, and slammed it down, the sound reverberating throughout the dining hall as she turned to directly face the girl, eyes steeled in slowly building vengeance.

"... imagine what I am willing to do to some miscreant who wants to hurt one of my companions."

hashimoto kiyoshi
scroll!

Really, there was little Kiyoshi could do except smile at the enthusiasm with which Adrian jumped to his feet, and follow after the dark-haired male as he strode briskly towards the cafeteria. Kiyoshi had always considered himself at least somewhat agile, but to keep up with Adrian was a bigger trial than he would've guessed—it'd been a long, long time since Kiyoshi had had to navigate a crowd as thick as the Vehemen student body, and while he didn't want to be left behind and stranded in a sea of unfamiliar faces, neither did he want to jostle anybody and invite antagonism.

He was willing to bet that all the eyes he could feel burning a hole in the back of his head were a product of his imagination, but not for the first time, he wished that he had a more unobtrusive hair color.

It was bad enough that he'd been thrown into this completely unfamiliar world; he could at least have a hair color like Adrian's, or even Maxwell's. Silver hair was uncommon if you weren't an octogenarian, sure—which wasn't to say that Maxwell didn't pull it off, because he did—but there were enough pale-haired people that he'd blend in alright. But bright blue?

Perhaps he should invest in a hat.

Even as he thought it, he knew it wouldn't come to fruition; he got awful hat hair, and hats always felt confining, but any hypotheticals came to a halt when they arrived at their destination. The lunchroom was, like the rest of Vehemen, an architectural marvel. He felt classy just being in the cafeteria, but it was a sobering reminder of how classy he was not, when he got to the lunch line, saw all the options spread out in front of him, and blanked. He didn't want to cause trouble by asking the names of unfamiliar dishes (many of which he was faintly convinced he'd at least seen on the Internet, but couldn't be 100% sure), or hold up the line by taking too long to make his decision, so in his panic he simply picked up the closest thing to him.

It looked like some kind of soup, which was harmless enough. Now, what kind of soup was beyond him, but he could figure that out when he'd eaten it.

Cleo—one of the Second Generation students—was waving them down from a table that the Otherworlders were occupying. Grateful that he didn't have to sit down next to someone he didn't know, he made his way over, and proffered Ravyn a small smile. It was easier to hold onto his composure when he could convince himself that the 'hot stuff' in question was his roommate.

As he sat down, he did a visible double take when he noticed Nora. He was quite certain they hadn't all hallucinated her disappearance, but he wasn't about to look a gift horse in the mouth. She was here and unharmed, and that was what mattered.

"So, what did I miss?"

Kiyoshi paused; he didn't want to cut across anyone who was going to answer. However, when no one spoke up, he turned to look at Nora and offer what details he could.

"I'm glad to see you safe," he began sincerely. They may not know that much of each other, but there were few better bonding activities than risking your life together against a monster. "You haven't missed too much. A fairly stressful night, and then we attended a welcome assembly, after which we had our phones reprogrammed and received ID cards." He hesitated, unsure about the logistics, before continuing. "If a teacher hasn't gotten to you yet, you might want to get that taken care of. As I understand it, the ID cards serve the means of identification, access, and currency, so they're pretty important. We had two classes this morning, history and physics—I'm happy to lend you my notes, if you'd like—and I think we're to have an assessment later this afternoon."

He paused, mentally turning over if there was anything he'd missed, and although he didn't mean to eavesdrop, he heard a snippet of Cleo telling Ravyn, "—ya guys' afternoon professor. He likes to make things harder than it should be."

Which wasn't the most auspicious introduction, but before Kiyoshi could think too hard on it, the whole table was rudely interrupted. Emphasis on rude; a trio of students came up and began... talking smack, he believed the term was, and went so far as to yank Usami out of her chair and onto the floor. Kiyoshi had no idea how students who behaved this way were allowed to into what looked like a prestigious institution.

"It's weird, isn't it. How they call us regular students and you lot Otherworlders, like you're special or something."

Kiyoshi blinked. "Maybe," he said evenly, "it's because we are indeed from another world. Hence the name Otherworlders." Perhaps Vehemen should invest in a vocabulary class. The way things looked, some of their students sorely needed it.

His gaze flicked over to Usami, but before he could move to help her, Hanna and Frederika had already risen. The former went for one boy's collar, while Frederika was so far maintaining a hands-off approach—though by the slow, deliberate way she was taking off her gloves, whether or not it remained that way was anybody's guess.

He missed a lot of context to truly understand the other students' jabs against the Second Generation, but Elise had already responded, voice cold and sharp. At this point, he felt useless, unsure whether he should contribute in forming some kind of united front or whether he should try to diffuse the situation.

Ever the diplomat, he opted for the latter, even though he severely doubted it would work. "We're not trying to start a fight," he said, doing his best to speak firmly but non-aggressively. Hanna, with her hands fisted in a bully's shirt collar, didn't do wonders for his case, but he didn't condemn her reaction in the slightest. If he were a braver person, maybe he would've responded in kind. "We're just trying to eat lunch, like most of the students in here. Perhaps you should do the same."

Ravyn smiled slightly and accepted the salad. Be polite. Plus, it might not be that bad of an idea upon hearing Cleo's description of the upcoming assessment. She wasn't frail; she was obsessed with keeping in shape, but whatever this 'assessment' (she already didn't like the sound of it) seemed brutal. Harder than it needs to be? Eek. She daintily started picking at the salad.

"So, what did I miss?"

Ravyn dropped her fork and looked up. Was it...?

"Nora? Nora Glass?"

Ravyn's jaw dropped. It was. The lanky, not so fashion forward, former roommate that was supposedly missing for some amount of time in all her baggy, sweatered glory. Right there.
"Oh my god... we thought... you aren't...? "
Ravyn's confusion was interrupted by the incredibly rude... Origiworlders...? Normalworlders...? whatever. They were asking for a fight and her fellow Otherworlders were about to bring it. She wasn't normally one for violence. She could find a way to hurt them, start a rumor, find a nasty photo and post it everywhere... that's what some of her friends did. She wasn't in to that sort of stuff though, but still, these guys were pissing her off. Hanna was surely letting off steam, or fire. Elise's sharp words seemed like they could cut any coward down. Good, somewhat pugnacious responses. Kiyoshi and Frederika had, in her opinion, the least effective approach. Pure logic. That's normally a one way ticket to smacked lunch trays and constant pestering. Ravyn prefered a more subtle approach.

She brushed back a strand of hair from her face with her middle finger then pulled it away, still flipping the bullies off. Her eyes widened, and she feigned innocent surprise.
"Oh! Oh my, I'm so sorry. I didn't realize..."
Each word was laced with sarcastic venom. Still keeping up the fake innocence, she put her middle finger to her lips and batted her eyelashes. Fake cuteness. She 'realized' again that she was still flipping them off.
"Oh dear! Look! I did it again! My b..."
She held up the bird a little bit longer, the fake smile turning into a sneer. Once her point was made, she turned to Usami and offered her hand to help her up.
"Need a hand?"

[/div] [div class=role]third generation otherworlder[/div] [div class=name]usami[/div] [div class=nameo]usami[/div] [/div] [div class=body][div class=scroll] Usami chewed, her mouth stuffed with food, and followed the direction of heads facing the newcomer. Everyone looked as if they've seen a ghost and taking a look at who arrived, Usami understood why. This was the girl who disappeared without a trace? The one everyone was worried about? Her name was mentioned several times during the day that Usami also grew a spark of interest, but she couldn't put together how this group was so quick to care about a person they barely knew.

The video clip from the news was Usami's only way of identifying the other Third Gens, and Usami's memory leaned toward the side of photographic. A short glimpse was enough for Usami to remember a face, and the figure standing in just a pair of sweatpants and sweater was indeed the girl from the video. She stuck out among the rest of the students, who were fully suited into their pristine uniforms, and showed little to no ounce of care.

Usami was too preoccupied with her meal to process the following. She was puzzled by the unwelcome air of hostility, a rude interruption in everyone's merry meal. She had hoped to lie low and avoid conflict by not showing an ounce of care to what the group of grumbling gremlins had to say. Unfortunately, Usami had not expected to literally be dragged into the situation... One moment, she was about to shove another spoonful of mouthwatering goodness in her mouth and then next, a hand broke through Usami's peripheral while another grasped her collar. The same hand, who so rudely disrupted her bubble of personal space, forced Usami out of her seat. An abrupt grunt escaped her and her food flung out of her hands as her body was thrown onto the ground.

Air was stolen from her lungs, shock written over her face as she finally managed to get a hold of the situation. She pushed herself onto her forearms, her eyes immediately searching for her walking stick. It laid defenseless a few feet away, remembering that the bullies had kicked it out of her reach.

[div class=dialogue]"...stand up by yourself and prove that you can be a Hunter... If she wants to try and be a Hunter and get killed by a Poex, that's her problem..."[/div]

Usami snapped her head toward her assaulters, not making a move to pick herself up from the ground. She couldn't find the motivation, the drive, or even the purpose to look any of them in the eyes...

[div class=dialogue]"Why? Why do I have to? Why should I?"[/div]

Usami stared vacantly from behind her curtain of black hair. The bodies of those who bared her company had already sprung into action, taking a stance against their assailants. She watched, suspecting a fight to break out despite the blue-haired fellow, Kiyoshi, saying otherwise. The girl named Hanna was the first to react, handing Usami her walking stick, and then making a move to grab the bully's collar with inferno hands. The fabric began to singe before her eyes.

Had the other girl, Elise, not stepped in, the poor fellow's uniform might have combusted into flames. The rest only brought grim thoughts to wash over Usami. Under her vacant expression, she was losing patience and was brimming with perplexity. She couldn't find a level of understanding when it came to any of their actions. Was their pride that important to them? What is this companionship that Frederika so confidently speaks of?

Her days spent in Ningen was never like this. There was no one who could do as Frederika was doing at this very moment. There was no one to stand in between Usami and her bullies. There wasn't a soul in Ningen that would offer Usami help or speak up so strongly for themselves. What is driving them to do so? These people were strange...

[div class=dialogue]"We barely know each other,"[/div]
Usami thought to herself. This whole talk about heroes, martyrs, and monsters brought a heavy feeling on Usami. The air felt thick as she found it difficult to take it all in. Usami wondered which god she must have angered to become so unfortunate.

Usami's eyes flickered between Ravyn's hand and the walking stick beside her. She appreciated her offer, but Usami's space had already been invaded more times than she would like. Usami grabbed her walking stick in one hand and shook her head at Ravyn. She forced herself to make a smile but found the feat fruitless. Instead, she waved her hand gently as a way to tell Ravyn to lower her hand. She began to push herself from the carpeted floor in a slow and careful manner...

The bully barely spared Hanna a glance as she picked up Usami’s walking stick. Even when she grabbed his collar, he only smirked smugly.

“Do you think any of you can beat us in a fight? You’re only a fresh-“

He paused, the smell of something burning and the heat around his neck finally registering. Eyes as wide as saucers, he looked down to see his uniform singed around Hanna’s hands.

“Fucking bitch!” he yelled, throwing Hanna’s hands off of him. He positioned himself to retaliate, but hesitated when he noticed Elise next to Hanna. A freshman, he could handle. But Elise? She was a poor fighter, but her defensive ability was nothing to scoff at. So he listened to her speak, face going several shades redder with each word that came out of her mouth.

“...Evidently, you’ve already proven yourself incapable of that, considering no one here has heard of your name except you and your equally pathetic friends.”

The girl that had kicked Usami’s stick bared her teeth in rage.

“Watch your mouth, Friedhelm. You’re just a-“ she began, but faltered when Frederika placed herself in front of her with authoritative strides. The blonde towered over her, and the bully couldn’t help the flinch when Frederika quite literally put her foot down to assert her dominance. She wavered for a moment before puffing up her chest in an attempt to feign confidence.

“Ha, I saw you in the video. All you know how to do is fight with brute strength. Didn’t surprise me that the Poex beat you within an inch of your life,” the bully spat out. As though emboldened by her own words, she reached out to shove Frederika aside. Regardless of whether or not she succeeded, she would twirl her fingers, and one of the abandoned steak knives would fly towards Frederika’s face—not fast enough to deal any permanent damage, but most definitely enough to draw blood if it hit its target.

Spurred by the girl’s action, the bully with the singed shirt shot forward and threw a punch towards Elise’s face. Under his uniform, his arm seemed to bulge thrice its original size. If the punch lands, a broken bone would be the least of Elise’s concerns.

The leader of the trio watched this all play out with unconcerned eyes. He turned back towards the table and grinned crookedly at its remaining occupants

“Well, looks like I should be going back to my lunch, as you say,” he said, raising his chin towards Kiyoshi. He turned his eyes towards Ravyn and smiled impishly, “And you. I wouldn’t mind having a gorgeous one like you around. Come find me if you ever want some better company, sweetheart.”

Without waiting for a response, he stalked off and left his oblivious companions to fend for themselves.

Elise Friedhelm.

Brutes, the whole lot of them. The moment their brain cells (not that they had any in the first place) overworked themselves and ran out of intelligent things to say, they immediately resorted to throwing fists.

Without missing a beat, Elise yanked Hanna towards her the moment her eyes caught the slightest of movement from nameless brute number one. She visibly cringed as she witnessed the sleeve of his uniform bulge painfully over his grossly enlarged arm muscles but kept her fork steady nonetheless.

As soon as the boy lunged forward to take a swing—powerful but clumsily executed, if she had to note—a crystalline pane bloomed from the tip of her fork to intercept the potentially bone-crushing impact. Though smaller and more concentrated than her boundary from the fight against the Poex the previous day, it still shattered into a shower of crystalline shards upon taking on the brunt of the hit. However, as if expecting the event, Elise deftly hopped backwards the moment she felt the fork in her hands strain under the pressure, using her boundary’s repulsive force from separating the fork from the boy’s arm to propel herself back further. Just in case she misjudged the cushioning her boundary would provide her, Elise immediately took on a defensive stance upon landing. If he managed to follow through, breaking an arm was better than breaking her ribs.

“Hanna!” she shouted, hoping the girl would pick up on her cue. Her normally faint voice had risen to a clear yell. Being honest, she wasn’t entirely clear on the extent of her fire power, but something was better than nothing. If anything, she’d adjust her support as seen fit.

In her peripheral, Elise spotted the leader of the hyena gang withdraw from the scene with a final, haughty comment tossed towards Ravyn. Though she clicked her tongue at his vulgar choice of words, the objective part of her mind breathed a sigh of relief. Regardless of the manner of his departure, two nuisances were better than three. He was arrogant, but it was to their benefit.

Hanna was thrown off by the bully, and then was yanked by Elise when he turned into fucking Hulk. "This day really, really sucks" Hanna growled, her hands were still on fire. She watched as Elise's barrier shattered like a piece of glass. Hanna started charging up a fireball, it was only a little bigger then yesterday, but she only needed a little fire for this fucker. Hanna quickly looked over to Fred and watched as a steak knife struck her. She wanted to help Fred kill that bitch, but right now, she had to deal with this beefy dude.
"Hanna!" Elise shouted. She probably wanted Hanna to stay in the range of her barrier.
"yeah, yeah, I hear you!" Hanna responded before throwing the fireball at the bully. It was aimed at his face, and if it connected, AND he staggered, Hanna would throw as many punches as possible.

At Usami's dismissal, Ravyn lowered her hand. She turned back around to witness the fight beginning. The strangely muscled punch. The flying knife. Fireballs. Things weren't going to end amicably, were they. What should she do? What could she do? She didn't want to risk a migraine with her meager and likely useless powers. Then the ringleader's comment reached her ears.

I wouldn’t mind having a gorgeous one like you around. Come find me if you ever want some better company, sweetheart.

He referred to her like a prize. An object to admire. Rage boiled down deep inside of her, but Ravyn will do what Ravyn does best. She bit the corner of her lip suggestively and called after him, lacing her voice with a soft purr.

"Call off the brute squad and maybe I will..."

Ravyn even included a wink for good measure, if he decided to look back and even consider. She hoped that would work. Keep up the pretty face. Flirt like you've never flirted before. If she could wrap him around her finger, she could possibly stop future conflicts. She didn't normally like associating with cowardly bullies, but if she must, she must. Ravyn didn't want anyone to get hurt. If she could end the fight here, she would.

Ravyn always had a particular loathing for bullies. The fact the people would put other people down to feel better about themselves... it made her sick. She had to keep her opinions to herself though, because her friends--- if one could even call them such--- acted like that. She was supposed to be your classic, airheaded popular girl. Head of the cheerleading squad, prom queen, barely passing her classes, everything her parents didn't want her to be. Anything to prevent her from being their puppet. The thought was so ingrained into her mind that even though Ravyn was worlds apart, quite literally, she still felt she had to keep up the act. Why did she still have to keep up the act? It wasn't who she was, Ravyn knew that deep down, but was it who she was becoming? She didn't dwell on it though. There was a graver problem at hand.

Flirting with cowards.

Nora Glass
"Why struggle?"

location: the Academy: cafeteria

condition: angry

outfit: baggy sweater, sweatpants

Nora shifted uncomfortably in light of the sudden attention. She should have expected it, she supposed, making the kind of entrance that she did, but it was an unusual sensation. She drummed her fingers on the table as Kiyoshi explained their current situation to her, giving him a slight grin of thanks, one that twisted into a snarl over his shoulder as three strangers trode forward, one of them kicking Usami's cane out from under her.

A sickly girl, trying to rise from her hospital bed, collapsing to the floor at Nora's feet -

No.

She stood up abruptly, hackles raised. One of the others spat barbs in her direction, something about her clothes, but they fell upon deaf ears. Part of her was glad as Hanna, Elise, and Frederika intervened in the situation, but anger still simmered just below the surface. Her pale eyes bore a bitter cold, and at her full height, she stood an impressive 5'11". The air around her stirred as if she herself were the source of a chill breeze, spirals of mist eddying and flowing across the surface of her skin, patches of which shimmered like pavement under the summer sun. The corner of her lips twitched in an almost-grin as she watched Ravyn flip the bullies off, but it didn't stick.

The girl on her knees, weeping as she futilely tried to pull herself to her feet, a brittle facade of hope shattered.

She was snapped out of her memories by a flurry of movement. A fight. Nora had never even witnessed a fight, save for that against the poex, but that rage ignited in her veins and she realized that she wanted one. Desperately. Her jaw twitched as she watched Hanna throwing punches and, without further thought, leaped forward. She blinked out of existence for a moment, a sheet of fog coalescing in her absence, and propelled herself towards the retreating bully. She had seen the strength his companion had moved with, knew that she should rethink her actions, but her body was moving faster than her brain was. Besides, part of her was revelling in her newfound ability, the sudden awareness she felt of the particles she controlled, brushing against bodies and tables. Even without vision, she could sense the shape of her environment, navigating it deftly. The mist swam forward as if fuelled by storm winds, surging around the his figure. She reappeared a few steps in front of him, hissing out, "Coward! Stand and fight, if you're going to wax poetic about how much you miss your friends. Did you run when they died, too?" She swung her arms up and forward, and they soundlessly dissipated, dense grey mist emanating from her now limbless shoulders. Her torso twitched slightly as she pushed out, gathering it into an almost-black sphere and sending it flying towards him. If he thought it simple air, he would be wrong. Connection would mean broken ribs, at the very least.

The offending girl's shock was evident as the reverberations from Frederika's foot stomp washed over her. But just as quickly, the taller girl watched as her opposition rapidly regained her confidence, anger and hatred filling in where true courage failed. "Ha, I saw you in the video. All you know how to do is fight with brute strength. Didn’t surprise me that the Poex beat you within an inch of your life," the bully spat out. Before Frederika had a chance to respond, the bully was pushing past her. The smaller girl's shove did little to displace the amazon-like Frederika, and for a second she honestly wondered to what end she hoped to accomplish. Moments later, the flash of steel of the telekinetically accelerated knife and the spray of blood from her cheek would answer that for her; as she recoiled in unexpected pain, clutching her face as she knocked into the slowly recovering Usami, she watched as the girl walked by unfettered, her lips turned upwards in a haughty smirk as she passed.

Teufelin! If Frederika's game face wasn't on previously, it was certainly was now as her teeth bared, eyes flaring to fight. Rolvel! My blood is now on your hands; pray I do not add to it! In a blur of movement, she advanced towards her foe with a single cross-step, lashing out with a low side kick to the back of the girl's knee as she attempted to buckle her over backwards. Milliseconds later, her right arm flew past the bully's head, snaked down and back up around her neck, and then tensed, very nearly pulling her off her feet. As Frederika's grip locked in place around the girl's neck in a chokehold, she took the moment to growl out a few words. "There are many things that I am... but a mindless brute I am not!"

The trio and the Third Gens were creating quite the ruckas as a fight broke out. Usami expected such to happen even though she hoped the Third Gens had better common sense to back off from the trio. Usami's thoughts were lingering toward living today and fight tomorrow... Or preferrably don't fight tomorrow because that seemed meaningless.

A steak knife whizzed past the two, which Usami put two together as the source of their sudden reaction. Frederika was late to react judging by the hiss that elicited, but Usami was bewildered by the fact that it was moving at a rapidly slow pace. If there was a possibility of moving out of the way, Frederika was the first to do it. [div class=dialogue]"All of this violence is giving me a big headache,"[/div] she thought as Frederika's form bumped into hers.

Usami was at a loss of balance, falling back with her hands flailing to catch herself. She fell back onto the bronze table. The edge digging uncomfortably into her side. Somewhere in the mayhem, the hand holding the walking stick slammed against the tabletop, clashing against the plates and silverware. The end of Usami's walking stick was unfortunate enough to reach the opposite end of the table, roughly thwacking the warm mug of coffee from Adrian's hand. The mug was sent flying, dark steamy liquid swimming through the air in a spiral, and splattering itself onto Adrian's fitted uniform.

When Usami recovered, she blinked at Adrian with her bottom lip sucked in. She was beginning to really regret not eating lunch alone.

How did things go so wrong so quickly? When Adrian first sat down at the table, he'd assumed lunch would, like so many other parts of the day, be a largely mundane nature. And yes, it started out like that. As the others exchanged brief greetings and conversations, he dove into his admittedly modest meal. A grilled cheese may not have been very substantive, but for some reason, Adrian couldn't work up an appetite. Perhaps it was nervousness. There was no doubt the situation was fraying his nerves. The school setting wasn't helping, unfortunately. He kept expecting to see a monster round the corner and devour him whole.

And well, something did round the corner. Not exactly a monster, but no less surprising. When previously-missing Nora Glass seated herself at the table, Adrian calmly proceeded to choke on his grilled cheese and subsequently hacked out his lungs through the entirety of Kiyoshi's summary to the tall girl, looking up just in time to see Cleo leave. Having recovered, he gave Nora a once-over, who was dressed in the same outfit as the previous day: a baggy sweater and sweatpants. So she'd come back. Or, he supposed from the look of it, never left in the first place. After all, who'd run away without so much as a pair of shoes? But then, how did the entirety of the academy miss her? Given the value Vehemen and its principal placed on them, Adrian was sure that they'd have conducted a thorough search of the grounds before declaring her missing. Yet here Nora was, somehow casually waltzing around the school.

Before he or anyone else could question the girl on that topic, the unusual circumstances continued to snowball. Bullies were far from a foreign experience to Adrian and given the amount of attention he and the other Otherworlders attracted, it shouldn't have been a surprise that the hyenas would pounce. They'd practically been singled out for special treatment before the entire students body and there was no way that went over well with everyone. And so, the trio of older students swaggering their way across the carpeted floor failed to shock him.

Cliché. The first thought that run through Adrian's head was that they were so painfully cliché. Cliché walks, cliché sneers, cliché insults. It was almost funny. Until the female hyena seized Usami and flung her onto the ground, laughing about her legs. Then it stopped being funny. Adrian eyes narrowed at the clear act of violence and flitted around the room, searching for some sort of authority figure. Nothing and no one. Strange hat there'd be no adults around to watch the students when said students could also burn each others' faces off. Well, shit, Hanna. There goes getting out of this peacefully. Despite that, Kiyoshi still tried to defuse the situation with unfortunately little success. Instead, the head hyena stalked away, leaving his two goons to face off against the others.

And then Nora vanished, leaving in her place a cloud or fog or smoke or whatever it was that chased after the leaving bully. Why did his newfound companions have to be so damn aggressive? Distracted by Nora's strange transformation, Adrian failed to notice the commotion across the table until Usami fell against it, sweeping across the surface of the table with the end of her makeshift cane, knocking away plates, silverware, and, most importantly, food. Adrian could only stare in shocked horror as the stick destroyed his half-eaten grilled cheese and closed in on his resting mug with pinpoint accuracy. No. Not the coffee. He reached out to snatch away the mug before it could be victimized but was too late. The cane slammed into the mug, sending it flying through the air right at Adrian. Its hot contents spilled as the mug spun, splashing onto his uniform and scorching any exposed skin it came into contact with. He pulled back with a sharp, pained hiss. Adrian quickly stripped off the overcoat component of his uniform and shook off the remains of the steaming nectar..

The garment was definitely ruined, coffee staining it irreparably. Luckily, it had shielded his white shirt from danger, so he hadn't managed to destroy his entire uniform on the first day. He stooped over and picked up his fallen mug. Nothing. Not a drop left. Looking at the table, he realized that his entire meal was done for. No grilled cheese. No coffee. No nothing. Left eye twitching uncontrollably, he turned and looked at Usami. The culprit blinked up at him, looking entirely too sorry for him to be angry.

So now he had to redirect this frustration. And, well, the bullies were so conveniently placed. Seeing that Fred, Elise and Hanna seemed to be dealing with theirs well enough, Adrian turned to their leader. Nora was standing in front of him, keeping him from from moving on. Her raised arms shifted into that same grey substance, condensing into a dark orb that launched itself at the boy. Adrian scowled at his back. This was his fault, so there was no way Adrian was going to feel guilty about doing this. Stretching out his arms, he reached out for the bully with his ability and pushed, aiming to repulse him straight into the path of Nora's attack.

The bully barely flinched as Elise's shield shattered on impact. Bolstered by the perceived vulnerability of her boundary, he shot forward on invigorated legs and pulled his arm back for another strike. Just as his fist was inches from connecting with Elise's arm, he caught sight of red and orange in his peripheral vision. Unable to break out of his momentum forward, he took the brunt of the fireball right on a good portion of his face. The bully screamed and staggered to the side, crashing into another table. Hanna was already following up with several punches. Like a wild animal, he released a desperate roar and clutched the edge of the table with a single hand before hurling it in Hanna's direction. Frightened screams sounded from students who were unfortunate enough to get hit by the rain of food, plates, and cutlery. If Elise and Hanna don't handle the flying table wisely, innocent students were sure to be caught in its impact.

--

On the other side, the steak knife girl screeched like a banshee as she was lifted off the floor. But the offending noises quickly turned into muffled gagging when Frederika tightened her arm around her neck. She clawed futilely at Frederika's arm until the commotion from her partner in crime caught her attention. With a wave of her hands, the metal cutlery that had fallen from the flying table shot towards Frederika with speed that was much deadlier than before.

--

"Call off the brute squad and maybe I will..." the leader of the trio heard Ravyn calling from behind and huffed out a laugh. He wasn't interested in involving himself any further, now that the situation has devolved into utter chaos and violence. Besides, the simple disdain that the "brute squad" held towards the Otherworlders no doubt turned into a personal grudge by now. Calling them off would be a hassle, so why not let them go wild? The more attention they got, the better.

Most eyes were on the fight, so no one paid any heed to him as he made his way towards the cafeteria exit. Before he could retreat from the scene though, a shroud of fog materialized in front of him. He halted his steps, watching with raised brows as the fog solidified into one Nora Glass. So she has some kind of ability to transform her body into gaseous form then? Interesting, if not oddly familiar. She also certainly looked a lot angrier than before. Was it because her friend got thrown out of her seat? Or was it the "crazy bitch" comment that drew her ire? Either way, it didn't look like she was about to let him get out of here so easily.

His theory rang true when Nora gathered a black sphere to attack him.

Perfect.

"Hey, how about we calm down a little," he said half-heartedly, lifting his hands in a placating gesture. But the black sphere was already unleashed in his direction. His instinctual reaction was to dodge, but he stayed rooted and braced for impact.

That was, until he felt some invisible force push him from behind and straight into the black sphere. Annoyance was quickly washed over by smug satisfaction. In the split second between losing his balance and colliding with the sphere, he activated his ability.

He crashed into the dark orb and promptly collapsed onto the floor with pained cry. He clutched his torso and looked up at Nora with shocked and disbelieving eyes.

"Wha- Why did you attack me?!" he cried out between coughs. He didn't have to fake the strain in his voice—it took him some effort to fight back the bile that rose from the impact, and there was probably going to be a nasty bruise where the orb hit, he realized with a grimace. He and Nora were quickly attracting a small ring of spectator of their own. Some were murmuring and and pointing, and he strained to hear what they were saying.

"He was the one trying to leave, right?"

"That was uncalled for..."

"Why'd she do that?"

He bit back a grin. He could see a few whipping out their phones and snapping photos, taking videos. He was lucky enough to get a couple of worried glances. He twisted his neck to look behind him, spotting Adrian facing them with frustration clear on the Otherworlder's face. "You were the one that pushed me? Why?! I didn't even- I was just trying to leave!"

He groaned and curled in on himself. Someone in the crowd stepped forward.

"Dude, you alright?" the student asked. He shook his head defeatedly, but before he could continue the tirade, a bell rang, signaling the end of the period.

If anyone dwadled to leave the cafeteria, a chef would slam open the kitchen door, waving a butcher knife threateningly in the air.

hashimoto kiyoshi
scroll!

As everything around him rapidly devolved into chaos, Kiyoshi realized (with no small amount of defeat) that his hope for a peaceful, mature resolution was, at the end of the day, hoping for the impossible. He may as well have wished for an extra ten centimeters of height or a unicorn to descend on them all and grant them eternal happiness. But the blame rested on his shoulders as surely as it rested on the three bullies who started the altercation anyway, and it'd be foolish of him to pretend otherwise.

If he'd wanted to truly diffuse the situation, he could have tried harder. The passive aggressiveness underlying his request for the other three students to return to their meal no doubt undercut the effectiveness of his plea. It certainly hadn't helped, or made any of them more amenable to refrain from escalating to a physical fight.

So, almost immediately after the last word had left his lips (or so it seemed in his mind), punches and knives alike were thrown. Kiyoshi surveyed the scene to the best of his ability, although he felt veritably overwhelmed with the sheer amount of things that were happening. The Lumen boy's bicep looked alarmingly large, much more so than when he'd swaggered over with too much bluster and not nearly enough brainpower to back it up, and unless the physics teacher had missed a very important part of the curriculum, knives in this world didn't go flying of their own accord.

He didn't know why it surprised him so that other students had powers as well (although he suspected that it had something to do with the fact that, you know, people where he came from didn't regularly have powers), but it did.

He stood fruitlessly, unsure what he could do that wouldn't just be fanning the fire—and literally, at that. There was some actual fire involved (Hanna's work). In the next few moments where he was trying desperately to think of a way where he could save his classmates from bodily injury and also avoid the wrath of authority from falling on their heads, the conflict reached higher levels. Even Adrian joined the fray, after having suffered an offense that he apparently could not condone.

(Kiyoshi was realizing, rather rapidly, that Adrian's id and basest instincts centered almost wholly on coffee.)

As Muscles fell under Hanna's onslaught, his desperation drove him to pick up a table singlehandedly—a feat of strength that, somewhere behind his repressed panic, Kiyoshi was vaguely impressed by—and hurl it at Hanna. Unthinkingly, Kiyoshi's hand shot out, and a circle of blue light expanded in the middle of the table's trajectory. If the table sailed into it, it'd reappear and likely shatter against a wall, considering that he'd put the exit portal almost right in front of one.

He didn't know if his intervention would be appreciated, but he'd rather take his chances with Hanna's ire rather than seeing her crushed under a table that could weigh more than all the Third Generations combined. And though he mourned the loss of skillfully crafted furniture, property damage was a lesser evil than human damage.

In the split second it took him to do that much, commotion arose, revolving around the leader of the trio—who Kiyoshi had foolishly thought was out of the picture. He was curled up feebly, no doubt playing up the theatrics for the crowd that had gathered around him. With a sinking feeling, Kiyoshi saw what kind of picture they painted: uppity students from another world, fighting with students who were likely more established in Vehemen's pecking order and thus already that much less sympathetic.

And that was without taking into account how the numbers stacked up; besides Frederika, they had more than one person engaged with each member of the trio, one of whom had been walking away. Of course the trio weren't blameless; push him enough, and Kiyoshi might even admit they had it coming. Yanking one of their own from her seat and throwing her to the floor? That alone was inexcusable.

But considering that Kiyoshi had a hard time respecting any of the administration, and (as he'd been taught to from childhood) feared their teachers too much to be looking for companionship from them, he didn't know how they could spin this in their favor.

Whether a blessing or a curse, the bell chose that moment to ring. Looking around, he saw that the students who weren't filing out were looking at them with mistrust and resentment, and this was not another conflict they could win or afford. Uncharacteristic as it was for him to speak loudly, he raised his voice to be heard above the din. "We need to go," he called tightly. "This—" He paused, broke off. Shook his head. "We can deal with the consequences later, but we need to leave."

The last thing they needed was to spend one more iota of time in a lunchroom that was rapidly feeling more and more hostile, or add tardiness to their list of missteps.

Maxwell tagged along for the most part. He remained quiet throughout their class, and only kept himself busy going over his class notes. Every now and then, he'd lend an ear to his acquaintances, and would nod in approval, or just a blank stare in between. He didn't have much to say in the first place, and if the army taught him anything, it was best to shut up and observe. Just those things he did, honing his skills as a gray-man throughout his recent life on Ningen. That was all before he came to this world, where the attention was put on him and the rest of ghe Otherworlders. Someone would be taking their fighting words and gestures soon enough. And so they did, just as Maxwell was getting his lunch.

Drama, much like the old world, was prevalent here as well. He wasn't within earshot to catch the ordeal, but from what his eyes perceived, the man put it off as none of his business. Leaning against a pillar, Maxwell munched on his red bean bread, then took some sips from his juice box.

Assertion of strength, was the norm in this world as well. Some possessed a fight in them, and others a sense of insecurity. The needed to prove themselves or otherwise disprove others. It was only human nature. Maxwell watched on with interests, pondering on how the assailants would fare. He chose not to intervene, knowing he'd be better off getting some grub in his belly before the next period. Besides, they handled themselves well enough, he observed, as he munched on. It was then the bell rang, and they would have to be on their way.

(This is some good stuff. I should probably get some more for later.)

Maxwell waltz over to the counter, floating his way past the sea of students who were looking at the other direction. He ran his card and grabbed another set of sandwich and juice box right before the chef began waving his blade around. Nonchalantly, the white-haired youngster sipped on what remained of his juice, threw it in the trash, then rallied with Kiyoshi.

"I concur. Let's go." Max said to Kiyoshi.

He was caught up in observation that he forgot about one thing he was going to do at lunch. Professor Kikuchi. He needed those lists for extra research, and here he was, about to be late for his next class. Maxwell gave a sigh beneath his breath and shook his head slightly.

(I will have to catch up with the man after school it seems. Hopefully, it will be a quiet one from here on out.) Maxwell thought to himself, all the while briefing a glance at the Otherworlders and Dark Hair.

Maxwell groaned a bit internally. He didn't even have time to get a smoke. Tapping his pocket lightly, he noticed his pack of smoke was all wet. Frustrated, Maxwell sigh again, this time heavier. That little chase from earlier made him dropped into a pond for concealment. While he managed to get by with a new set of clothes, his cigarettes did not make it. He then pondered upon their assessment, thinking it best to speculate on that and preparing himself mentally for what's to come.

~Frederika von Eisenhart~
-- Targeted Vehemen Academy Student --

Status: Lightly wounded (facial knife wound)
Wearing: Vehemen Academy School Uniform, female
Location: Vehemen Academy, Dining Hall

---

The glint of steel out of the corner of her eye was all that was needed to tell Frederika the girl had chosen the path of continued resistance. "Very well, the die has been cast," she growled, as she'd been preparing for this eventuality. With her free hand, she slid down the girl's left arm, sliding down until she grasped hold of her wrist. With a violent jerk, Frederika twisted it behind the other girl's back as she released her chokehold, transitioning into a rear hammerlock to control her opponent's position. As the myriad cutlery rocketed towards them, missiles projected at a lethal velocity, she cranked the girl's arm and wrist up, propping her up to her full height as a human shield and now restraining her from further manipulating the path of the silverware. The bell began to ring, and so her next words were at a near shout, egged on by her building disgust the girl she held before her. "As you have chosen to draw blood upon me, I feel little remorse in applying the same sentiment to y-"

Uncharacteristic as it was for Kiyoshi to speak loudly, he raised his voice to be heard above the din. "We need to go," he called tightly. "This—" He paused, broke off. Shook his head. "We can deal with the consequences later, but we need to leave."

Frederika glanced around from her position as she held the girl in place. The charred features of the other bully still present indicated that Hanna appeared to have continued to deal out flaming punishment, very likely trading attack and defense duties with the nearby Elise. She hadn't see where Adrian and Nora had gone, but the screams from the hallway seemed very likely to be related to their current actions. So momentarily, the blonde girl questioned her classmates decision to retreat. In this moment of retribution? Still, Kiyoshi had struck her as someone who clearly possessed a cool head and a capability to survey the situation, and he had been the instigator of the the child's rescue in the Poex assault the prior day. So whatever terrible oversight he had spotted that was about to come crashing down on the team, chances are it was a legitimate concern. Unfortunately this highlit a certain concern; there was no way that Usami was going to be able to withdraw from the area at any thing approaching a tactical rate under her own power.

Lacking a tenable alternative, Fredrika cranked the girl's arm one last time to lift her stock upright, and then with all of her force, push kicked her straight into the path of the cloud of cutlery. She didn't doubt for a second that with her hands free again, the hyena would disperse the lethal swarm; and if Frederika tarried, direct it right back at her sans barrier. So with a single moment of delay, she scooped Usami up under one arm, and snatched her walking stick with another, bolting for the door. Whether it was her physically imposing presence, their rapidly degrading reputation, or simply the natural inclination of getting out of the way of a charging beast, the student body seemed to be separating before her, but regardless, a shouted "Aus dem Weg!" was soon heard down the hall to clear out the few stragglers; she was going to need to clear a path quickly and intensely, or else their rapid retreat would be overrun.

Nora Glass
"Why struggle?"

location: the Academy: cafeteria

condition: angry

outfit: baggy sweater, sweatpants

Nora surveyed the growing crowd with a dispassionate gaze. She sneered down at the bully at their feet, sparing a moment to wipe the hostility from her face and give Adrian an approving nod. A familiar voice rang out - Kiyoshi, the boy who had given her an explanation of their situation earlier. Funny, the fight made it seem like it was so much longer ago than the mere few minutes of chaos that had passed. Another voice, that of a boy she didn't recognize, joined in support. Her gaze flicked back down to the sobbing boy as the light of righteous fury returned to her eyes. Kiyoshi was right, but she had something she wanted to say first.

She crouched down, one hand on her bent knee, one reaching for his hair as she bent forward, pulling his ear up to her mouth. "Enjoy your pity party while it lasts. See, people will forget me because, in this world, it seems that they have no choice. But you? They will forget you because they want to. Our psyches spare precious little memory for weakness, for sob stories, and for cowards." She dropped him, standing to witness the flash of movement that was Frederika tearing past with Usami under her arm. Nora stalked out of the room behind her, allowing enough space for anyone matching the running girl's speed to get past her comfortably, but not willing to run herself. No, that would be too much effort for the situation. She just hoped that she would blend back into the background quickly enough that none of this would really matter.

Hanna's eyes would widen as the bully threw a table at her, forks, plates, and all. She felt fear, but her body wouldn't move. Move dammit, Get out of the way! She screamed in her head. But it was almost like time had slowed down. Everyone was staring with wide eyes, some had their phones out, others ran for cover. Nora was blocking the ring leaders exit, and seemed to have injured him. And Fred had her bully under control, so they had somewhat succeeded. Her mind was practically screaming at her to do anything to save herself. Hanna considered Burning the table to ash, but she couldn't control her flames that well, and could very well burn everyone in the room to a crisp.

Hanna closed her eye's, and waited for the table crush her body. She kept them closed until she heard Kyoshi's voice telling them to dip, and then opened her eye's. The table was gone, not a trace of it left. Kyoshi had saved her, he saved Hanna from a table crushing her body. At the moment, Hanna felt like crumbling on the floor and crying, but she couldn't show weakness right now. Because she was surrounded by a pack of wolves, and if she showed weakness, they would tear her apart. She could see Fred bolting out the door while carrying Usami, and decided to do the same. She slid over a table, and headed out the door, not looking behind her at all. She looked around for Fred, but couldn't see her at all. in fact, she couldn't see anyone she knew. "alright, guess were heading to class alone" Hanna said, slowing her pace down. She started to walk in the direction she thought class was, and was pretty curious what the test thing was.

The whispers of the gathered crowd were quick to cool Adrian's head. Looking away from the boy on the ground to the onlookers, it was easy to notice that he and Nora were seen as the aggressors. And perhaps rightfully so, he realized. Looking back at it, though his friends were more than willing to fight the others, this bully hadn't directly been involved with any of the violence. Instead, he'd tried to leave. It was Nora and Adrian who'd decided to pursue him. And this situation was their fault. The two of them had hit an unresisting victim hard enough to incapacitate him. They were the bullies here.

And as much as he'd like to, Adrian couldn't even argue that they hadn't meant to hurt the bully. He'd certainly intended to keep him from avoiding Nora's blow - though he hadn't expected such success - and he couldn't speak for Nora's intentions. From the anger written across her features and the way she hissed into the downed boy's ear, Adrian doubted she did anything she hadn't meant to do. In any case, it time to get out. The bell had just rung, and it was a good an excuse to leave as any. He swore angrily under his breath as the whispering in the crowd grew in intensity and fervor. The writhing mass of students were quickly turning against them and Adrian could practically taste the hostility.

Luckily, Frederika provided a temporary reprieve as well as a way to get out quickly. The tall girl sprinted past the commotion, the gathered students moving aside to avoid being bulldozed by her. Recognizing an opportunity for what it was, Adrian followed in her wake, hurrying past Nora. Having finally escaped the crowd, Adrian continued to follow the others, choosing not to question exactly why Usami was being carried like baggage under Frederika's arm. He released a despondent sigh. In all the chaos of the fight, he'd almost forgotten that they still had another class to go to. On top of it all, he hadn't even managed to finish his lunch.

This was not how Adrian was hoping his first day would go.

Elise Friedhelm.

No, he wouldn’t. Not with this many people around.

Elise’s eyes widened the moment the muscled brute reached backwards to grip the table behind him. In her disbelief, her reaction came a hair too late. Fortunately, within the fraction of a second she had wasted, a blue void opened up to divide the space between Hanna and her assailant, swallowing the sizable table in the process. The specifics as to where the other side of that gate was connected to was the least of her worries.

“Are you insane!” Elise’s harsh yell directed itself furiously towards the table thrower. Her throat stung from the abnormal amount of shouting in the span of minutes, but her fury spurred her on to open her mouth to unleash a torrent of words lecturing the boy for his thoughtless actions. However, her words remained unspoken, interrupted by the bell and the bellow of one of the chefs.

Elise bit her lip. Hesitantly, she waved her hand towards Hanna and dispelled the boundary she had half-drawn to catch stray cutlery. Before she turned to leave, her eyes met the other boy’s one last time. A warning, though she was sure his pride would cause him to ignore it completely.

Still fuming, the ash blonde stormed off without a second word to begin making her way to the town square, where Cleo and Jun would be waiting.

Mitra.

232. 236.

“...see...fight…”

240. 244.

“can’t believe...”

Vague snippets of conversations filtered in from the hallway while Mitra counted the footfalls of the students passing by. It was business as usual, he had thought, until he caught the word “otherworlder” for the third time since the bell had rung to signal the end of lunch. Unfortunately, his suspicions were confirmed the moment the students in question began to gradually file into the classroom. Though he made no move to speak, his blank gaze flitted from student to student to take inventory of the damages: a knife wound on one girl’s face, evidence of a fist fight on another girl’s hands, and disheveled clothes on others.

For them to be getting into a scuffle on their first day, humans sure loved fighting no matter what world or age they hailed from.

With a light wave of his hand, the brunette gestured towards the stack of notebooks and bucket of pens neatly seated at the edge of his work desk. He was sure the students had been provided similar supplies in Professor Kikuchi’s lesson, but his superior had shoved the pile into his arms regardless. They were for the students who preferred to keep a notebook per subject, he supposed.

Any further interactions with the students were nonexistent. As the seconds ticked by, Mitra stood stock still in silence. It was only when the clock struck one exact that he finally opened his mouth to speak: “For those of you who don’t already know, my current designation is Mitra, and I will be in charge of your General Science classes for the year. You may call me as you see fit going forward.” As he gazed out at the seated class, his eyes lingered on Frederika’s face for a second longer than the rest.

“Anyone who wishes to see themself to the infirmary is free to do so,” he added dryly. Preferably, he’d rather not have someone bleeding out during his lecture, but the injuries he observed on two of the students present weren’t severe enough for him to force the matter. If they’d rather stay for the lesson, then so be it.

“I also ask that you not leave when class ends, as I am to lead you to meet...” Mitra blinked when he involuntarily paused. The tips of his lips nearly creased into the makings of a frown as he hesitantly continued, “-Professor Elvelo in the assessment room.”

Was the error growing worse? Even if Assisi waved it off as a “natural reaction,” the frequency in which the bug acted up was beginning to become worrisome.

Pushing the matter to the back of his mind, Mitra walked towards the lectern to switch on a hologram depicting a large, lion-like beast which greatly resembled the monster the students had fought the other day.

“Today’s lesson will cover the basics on monsters such as the one you all fought yesterday. As I’ve heard your world, Ningen, does not have such creatures, I’m sure you have many inquiries. However, for the sake of efficiency, please hold any questions or concerns for the end of this lecture.” As he spoke, Mitra’s voice imitated the rise and fall of natural speech, but his tone remained incredibly bland, the sort that most fall asleep at.

“Since twenty years ago, monsters—much like the one you fought yesterday—began their descent upon the world from giant cracks in the sky. No one knows where they came from nor why they exist.

The monsters in Lumen are categorized in two ways, the first of which is based on a letter-based power scaling.

Poex range from levels A to E, wherein level A is the weakest while level E is the strongest. As a reference, the Poex from yesterday was a level C monster, typically the strongest level of Poex you’ll encounter on a more regular basis, as anything beyond tends to be rarer. However, monsters beyond level E may appear on occasion. Such monsters are referred to as Faex which are evaluated as either level X, Y, or Z, with Z being near nonexistent. Though scarce in numbers, the Faex are a threat due to their ability to seemingly lead the Poex with their ‘cries.’”

Mitra bit back an offhand comment instructing the students to refrain from engaging a Faex. Though he viewed the third generation’s act of engaging a level C Poex unarmed as foolish, Cleo’s scathing words from the day prior continued to bite at his conscience. Instead, he tapped the lectern to switch the current display from yesterday’s Poex to models of a monster which resembled a hybrid between a bat and a lion and another monster whose features could barely be made out beyond its muddied, rotting lump of flesh.

“The second classification system used is based on the features of the monster, with the two categories being Bestial and Magus.

Bestial monsters boast higher physical prowess and sheer brute strength but possess weaker magical and supernatural traits compared to Magus types. Like the regenerative ability that the Poex you saw yesterday had, if they have any additional abilities at all, they are typically less complex or defensive in nature. In a similar vein, Bestial monsters rely more on base instincts due to a lack of intelligence, hence making up seventy percent of lower level Poex. Additionally, like the name suggests, they tend to take on the forms reminiscent of various animals, including insects, and plants.

Magus type monsters, however, possess lesser physical strength but are oftentimes far more dangerous than Bestial monsters due to their higher intelligence and far more potent supernatural abilities. Though their intelligence falls short of humans, they possess a wit sharp enough to counter more basic strategies, making fighting them difficult. In addition, their powers largely compensate for what their physiques lack. Aside from abilities which bolster their defenses, many even possess abilities capable of affecting the mind through illusions and the like.

The most common types of Magi which hunters encounter can be sorted into three sub-categories: Spirits, Undead, or Golems. The latter of which was named as such due to their similarities to manmade golems, though their origins differ.”
A near offended glint flashed through Mitra’s eyes. However, his expression remained as blank as ever. “In any case, their appearance may border humanoid at times, though never human enough that a Magus would be mistaken as one.

In rare cases, powerful Faex have been noted to possess a mix of both Magus and Bestial traits, blurring the line between the two categories. These Faex are both physically strong and adept at using their potent supernatural powers, though they are hardly seen due to their rarity. In fact, Magi are encountered with a lesser frequency than Bestial monsters due to knowing not to bother human civilizations without a specific goal or reason in mind.”

Mitra switched the display one final time, this time to an image of a shining crystal-like rock. “As a final note for this lecture, the bodies of defeated monsters disintegrate, leaving only a rock named Lux behind. Any Lux dropped by monsters are then collected by the VHA or Vehemen Academy for research purposes.”

“-and that concludes our lesson for today,” Mitra said, scanning the seats for any distracted students. “If you have any questions, we have twelve minutes and thirty-four seconds. If not, you may quietly discuss among yourselves until it is time to leave for your assessment.”

Oh dear god. Good lord. Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior. Why. Just why. Ravyn quickly pushed back from the table. She didn't want anything to do with this chaos. She winced as Usami wiped out, taking all the Otherworlder's lunches with her. RIP Adrian's coffee. RIP Adrian for that matter. Everything was going to hell. They could have peacefully dealt with this. Instead, Hanna launched a fireball; Fredrika had a girl in a chokehold, her flirt didn't work, and now Nora was randomly getting involved?? Ravyn took a few more steps back, running a hand over her face. Fury was bubbling up inside her, but the only way she let it show was in her sharp, almost shouted words.
"Y'know, there's a more rational way to do this!"

Then someone threw the table. What the fuck. Ravyn jumped farther back, even though Kiyoshi apparently had it under control. Yay, you're good at using your powers. With a mild look of annoyance at the world, she tried blending in to the crowd. She didn't want to be associated with this fight whatsoever. She saw Nora and the black orb out of her peripheral vision. Ravyn wished she could will her thoughts over to the tall, comfortably dressed girl.

Don't do what I think you're going to do. It won't end well.

She couldn't have been more right. The ringleader seemed to throw himself into the sphere, and she could see the smugness on his face from here. As he pitifully curled up on the ground, Ravyn turned on her heel and left. She was done. This probably killed any chances of becoming popular. A tarnish on her reputation for something she wasn't even involved in.

She strode out of the cafeteria without a word. With the simmering ferocity, Ravyn didn't want to do or say anything she'd regret. She fished her phone from her purse and after a quick scroll through Instogurami (173 followers, nice), pulled up the map and schedule. Science. She took a deep breath and put her pretty face back on. Smiles, be preppy, you're all looks. Don't let anyone see you aren't all happy and perfect all the time. Normal things, right? She walked off in what she hoped was the direction of her class. No shame in being early. Ravyn arrived in class just before the lunch dismissal bell rang.
"Hi, sorry, l felt like being a little early. Hope that's alright with you."

She sank into a seat in the exact middle of the room, where she always liked to be. She took out the notebook from earlier today and opened it to about halfway. Just like in history, Ravyn wrote down the teacher name and class details with little sketches of the chemical structure of caffeine and a beaker. She turned to the next page and again, like history, doodled the entire lecture long.

Once Mitra finished, Ravyn completed her final doodle and slipped the notebook back into her purse. The ever looming assessment was drawing nearer and nearer. She looked around the room for a target. Who did she feel like flirting with right now...? Maybe Adrien, but he might still be fairly grumpy from the coffee incident. She could go at Kiyoshi again... Maxwell was a possibility, but he, in a way, seemed like a drag. Easy targets... Hanna? Nah, she didn't want to get burned if things went wrong. Frederika's a stiff. Usami's shy. Nora might still be a little shook and/or angry... Kiyoshi it was. He was easy enough. She found him wherever he was in the room and winked with a small, cute little smirk. She'll see if he'd come to her.

Flirt to hide the rage inside.

Hanna made it to class alright, and didn't talk to anyone. She sat it the far back, and didn't want to be bothered by anyone. She just wanted to be alone. Hanna hated this, she hated everything about this place. Now the otherworlders were seen as ruthless brutes, which wasn't true at all. She felt like an idiot for even fighting in the first place. It was like an invisible dunce hat was on her head.

She wanted to go home, where her friends were, and where people knew her as the really good basketball player on the team. Where her jersey was hung on the gym walls for everyone to see. But a dose of reality hit Hanna. Going home ment jail time. She threw away her life, and her scholarships, so no matter which world she was in, it would be hell no matter what.

Hanna took her notebook out, wrote the name of the class, and note's about the lecture. Once she did that, Hanna put her head down, a subtle nod too leave her alone. She just wanted this day to be over so that she could sleep in her room. "What do I do, mom?" Hanna said quietly. Knowing her mom, hanna thought she would probably smack her with a newspaper, and say "maybe don't fight, good grief, what happened to my sweet little flower". Hanna would kill to hear her mom's voice, even if it was to fuss at her in a language that Hanna barely understood

[div class=dialogue]"T-that could have been me-"[/div] Usami thought.

The ring of the bell caused a change of commotion as students started to push through the cafeteria to their following classes. Usami pushed her once sprawled body from the table. The remnants of food, her mashed potato especially, stained her own attire. She could barely wipe the material off as she was soon stolen from the tabletop and then stuffed into Frederika's side. Usami's walking stick in her other hand.

[div class=dialogue]"Hey! What are you-"[/div]

Her front side faced the opposite direction of where Frederika was running, and Usami squirmed in her hold. She absolutely hated being touched, and today had to mark a new record. She had been thrown, pushed, and now carried all within an hour. Usami felt displeasure and had the urge to push against Frederika, but quickly noticed the condition of the trio that was left behind. Then, she took sight of the butcher knife-wielding kitchen staff bursting through the flapping doors.

Judging from this scene, Usami had grasped a better understanding. Usami would have been too slow to retreat and would have most likely gotten caught in the aftermath of her peers' rumble with the trio. Usami was left in a predicament, a word that means she was having trouble whether to appreciate Frederika's efforts or to remain angry with her for intruding her personal space. Usami couldn't help but lift her middle finger in the direction of the hyena and leader before disappearing into the hallway- her face passive.

As the two barraged through the crowd of students, many glanced their way. First, it was toward Frederika's tall and assertive figure and then to the ragdoll known as Usami Endo. She eventually slumped against Frederika, her eyes drooping in defeat and annoyance. She accepted the embarrassment with open arms. She wasn't the type to hold a grudge. Usami was just not pleased with today's series of events. Soon enough the other Third Gens were following behind them, taking the open space left in Frederika's wake. Usami made eye contact with Adrian and the dark stain on his uniform. At least the two were even: two stains and one ruined lunch...

Once they arrived at their class, Usami peeled herself away from Frederika, grabbed her stick, and entered the classroom broodingly. Usami sat quietly in class, taking the seat beside Maxwell, and endured the heavy load of information from the unexpressive professor. Were they expected to know how to defeat these creatures?

Usami reprimanded herself, followed by a mental smack to the backside of her head. Of course, they were... They were expected to learn about these creatures that were supposed to remain in fairytales, the depths of a child's nightmare, or locked away in a chest full of failed creations by some mentally fucked up god-

Usami breathed heavily from her nostrils and finally paid her attention to the professor- not realizing the lecture had already ended. Usami waited for the rest of her class to fill the silence in the room with questions, but as Usami did a quick scan, she figured they were also troubled within their own thoughts. Usami felt selfish at that moment. It appears that today did not bode well with any of them.
