After the opening ceremony, the Third Generations, as per their schedule, would proceed to their first class, which also doubles as their homeroom. Once they arrived at the designated room, they would find that it was more akin to a small lecture hall. Eiichi was already sitting at the professor's desk, shuffling through some paperwork.
"Sit wherever you want," Eiichi said without looking up. He gestured towards the the stack of notebooks and the small, tin bucket of pens in front of him and added absently, "Feel free to take one. Keep the pens too."
After the meeting with the Principal the evening prior, Eiichi found himself barely able to get a wink of sleep. And upon arriving at the academy this morning, Ms. Ceciline had unceremoniously thrusted a small stack of papers into his hands. The only explanation that he got was "New circumstances" before the woman quickly stalked off. If he didn't know that she was incredibly busy herself for the first day, Eiichi probably would have sent her off with a glare. Nevertheless, it didn't change the fact that he'd been holed up in the classroom for the past hour or so catching up what limited details that the academy had on the two new Third Generations, and how another one of them disappeared in the middle of the night.
The thought that the universe was replacing the missing and dead students left a bad taste in Eiichi's mouth, but he didn't have time to mope. As soon as the clock struck nine, he stood from his seat and walked up to the podium at the front of the class. Despite running himself haggard the past twenty-four hours, Eiichi still stood poised and without a single hair out of place.
All the students were wearing proper attire, and they looked far less rattled than they had the previous day. Good. As for the two new students... The young man must be Maxwell, and the young lady Usami. Eiichi pursed his lips in a thoughtful frown when his eye landed on Usami's poor excuse of a walking stick. He'd read that she had some sort of difficulty with walking, but the documents didn't provide any concrete condition. He would have to consult Ms. Ceciline and Vince more about that. And make sure that the girl would get an upgrade for her walking stick.
"For those of you that I haven't already met, my name is Eiichi Kikuchi. First, I heard about what happened with Nora Glass last night. There was no security breach, so it's unlikely that someone took her. The academy is looking into this case, but we believe she may have left on her own or was spontaneously transported back to your original world. Rest assured, you're not in any danger so long as you're on academy premises," Eiichi said, despite doubting that his words would do much to put the students' minds at ease.
"Now, some technical details to go over," Eiichi sighed, looking up from his notes of all the obligatory niceties that he was supposed to go over with new Otherworlders. "As you can see from your schedule, this period will be both your history class and homeroom. As your homeroom teacher, I will also be your supervisor during your time at Vehemen Academy, along with Professor Mitra, whom most of you have met yesterday. This means that I will be overseeing future field work and handling the general logistics of your performance in your classes. As per the academy's policy on Otherworlders, you won't be taking classes with students from Lumen, but you may be assigned to work with them during field assignments, so I advise you to get to know your other schoolmates.
"Usually, you are to meet with me again after your lunch period, but since you have Professor Mitra's class after lunch, you may report directly to his class. You will have combat training lessons afterwards with... Professor Vince," Eiichi's eye twitched minutely, but he plowed on. "But today, there will be an assessment instead, so prepare yourselves for that."
Once all the housekeeping things were out of the way, Eiichi flipped his neatly stapled papers to the following page with his lesson plan. "Today's lesson will be a brief rundown the history of Lumen and Praeces. In particular, the history of the supernatural abilities that we wield and their effects on the world. This lesson is meant to help all of you get familiarized with this world, so we will be going over the history in broad strokes. We will go over details in future lessons. You may use the notebooks on your desks to take notes," Eiichi paused and tapped the podium twice. A large, holographic image of a map appeared aside him. Smaller, identical versions of the holograph appeared in front of each student from their desk. If the students took a close look at the map, they would notice that the appearance and geographic locations of the continents resembled that of their original world. However, the names of the continents are completely different. North and South America had become North and South Eveiland, respectively, Africa was Dazenfall, Europe was Skeiland, Australia was Varyka, Antarctica was Crustallica, and Asia was, strangely, Aisa. Another glaring difference is a large continent between what they knew as North America and Africa. Before anyone could raise a question towards the similarity, Eiichi pointed at the large continent and continued, "From what I understand, the world of Lumen closely resembles the world of Ningen—in other words, the world from which you all came from. It's a particularity that we are interested in, but we won't delve into that right now. And as I'm sure you've noticed, the Kingdom of Praeces, this continent between Eveiland and Dazenfall did not exist in Ningen. But it is where we are all located right now. More specifically, we are in the city of Raevedel, the capital of Praeces.
"Praeces was first discovered by a Angulan explorer in 1655. Over the next three decades, Skeilander settlers populated the new continent. The Dazenfall Slave Trade had been going on in North Eveiland and Skeiland for the past century, and Dazenfaller slaves were naturally imported into Praeces as well. Due to a corrupt government in Angula, a country in Skeiland, the Praeces Revolutionary War began in 1670, until its independence was recognized in 1675. In the 1680s, magic, or abilities, began to manifest in about 30% of the Dazenfaller population in Praeces. These people were initially viewed as devils, but over the years, they helped the people of Praeces to avoid natural disasters, and some had healing abilities that far exceeded what medicine at the time could do. Over time, they began to be viewed as god sent beings instead. Many Dazenfallers were thus put into positions of power, and slave trade gradually slowed within Praeces until it ended in early 1700s. Between 1687 and 1728, Dazenfall colonies began to declare their independence.
Those from other continents only began to manifest their abilities about a decade after Dazenfallers did. In 1728, Praeces entered war with numerous Dazenfall countries, and in 1731, claimed them as Praeces territory. Despite their supposed divinity just several decades ago, the war led to apparent racism toward Dazenfallers in Praeces. It wasn't until 1958 that Dazenfall countries reclaimed their independence, partly thanks to the increased wealth of the continent as a whole after the discovery of abundant gold mines in Dazenfall. It's also worth noting that due to abilities replacing the need for technology and medicine, advances in those areas slowed in most of the world. Studies into traditional technology and medicine only picked up again approximately two centuries ago.
A few years after abilities first appeared, crime rate surged significantly. Just as there were people who did good with their abilities, there were people who saw it as an opportunity to further their own ends. For a long time, these criminals ran amok because there was no way to control people with abilities. In 1741, the Specialized Supernatural Abilities Troop, or the SSAT, was formed by the Praeces government to deal with criminals with abilities. Naturally, the SSAT was comprised of those with abilities as well. Still, containment of these criminals was met with difficulties. And so in 1755, a drug named Null was developed. When injected, it temporarily shuts down an individual's abilities. Unfortunately, the SSAT and the upper-class who'd managed to get their hands on the drugs abused their power. Innocent people who had abilities were captured, some as criminals and some for more... unsavory reasons. It was only in 1815 that Null became strictly illegal for those other than authorized personnel."
Eiichi continued on about the appearance of Poex twenty years ago, the establishment of the academy, how the VHA quickly absorbed the SSAT, the Grim Night, and the appearance of the First Generation Otherworlders and the Miracle that they brought, then the appearance of Second Generations.
"...And that brings us to now, year 2472, with your appearance as Third Generations. I'm sure you'll make history books one day," Eiichi concluded without humor. "There is more regarding relations between Praeces and other countries, but we will go over that in detail in the future. This concludes my lesson for today. There are outlines of what we went over today on my desk. Feel free to take one as you leave. Are there any questions?"
"Sit wherever you want," Eiichi said without looking up. He gestured towards the the stack of notebooks and the small, tin bucket of pens in front of him and added absently, "Feel free to take one. Keep the pens too."
