A Tale to be Told

Good evening, and welcome to Duratus. Within Duratus, eternal darkness reigns and monsters of all shapes and sizes roam freely. Why? How? No one really knows for sure. Some say that Pandora’s box was somehow opened, while other believe that it was a curse placed upon the land. Either way, evil has taken root… Kingdom after kingdom has crumbled, providing little to no rule within Duratus. Chaos and discord run ramped throughout the land. Many of the forests have become dangerous, and traveling alone is a death wish. There is no where to run. There is no where to hide. Every town and almost every kingdom has been completely consumed by the evil in some shape or form. There is no longer a sense of security, and there are no sanctuaries…well, except perhaps…for one.

Say hello to Vineam city, where both magic and science have joined forces in order to keep the darkness at bay. While magic is more common, various forms of science have helped create new weapons and new cures for illnesses. Vineam city holds a wide verity of individuals, ranging from the undead to humans to fairies. Now, although this town does act as a sort of sanctuary, the monsters and nightmarish creatures of Duratus have found a way to breach the town’s walls. The darkness has seeped in and is trying to break down the town from the inside out.

Rumors of various different creatures fighting over territories have spread, and it is believed that some of these nightmarish beings are trying to take over Vineam city to declare themselves as ruler over Duratus. Others just wish to spread madness and chaos, including a fabled ‘group’ that has started terrorizing the Hills of Hyres. More and more people have gone missing over the last few years, and it is believed that this ‘group’ is the one responsible. Which ever the case, nothing good can come of it.

Will you rise up as an evil tyrant, or try to save an already dying land? The choice is yours.

For some backlight, let me explain this group: Decades ago, this group was an elite team of nobles who served under the empire of Lanomian as the clergy. They worked behind the scenes in practice to preach to an unknown deity. Midnights of moons pass when the group unveil an ancient artifact that highly resembles an urn. The material it was made out of was impossible to describe, though it looked similar to obsidian. The urn stood 4 feet tall and weighed about 200 pounds. A black raven was carved into its top, and strange, unreadable writing had been inscribed into its base. Cravings of plagues and monsters had been perched into it, and the letter 'V' was imprinted in the dead center of the chaotic scenes. The artifact was dubbed as 'The Urn of V' and was put through several tests, before the hierarchy decided to try and open it.

After several failed attempts, the group finally managed to open it after charging the urn with several thousands bolts of lighting, as if to reanimated whatever lay inside. The darkness seeped out of the urn and turned Duratus upside-down. Chaos reined and monstrous creatures rose up from out of the gloom. The clergy was slaughtered that day, all except for one...a long forgotten surgeon that had been shunned by the Lanomian Empire...one by the name of Kraven Salt...

This is my home. A deadbeat, lifeless forest with absolutely no room for magic expression. I sat on top of an old oak branch, looking over the Hills of Hyres with a look of uncertainty. You see, the creatures here aren't pro science nor are they pro magic. They're just wandering strays that play with a Ouija board all day while chewing on three day old rabbit bones thinking about how much of an outcast each one of them is. No, this definitely is not the life for me. I've lived here for decades and there is nothing for me anymore, in fact there never was. Crows cawing. Cicadas buzzing. Strange growling. Nothing but noisy. I had to leave, but where would I go?

"Vineam City."

I jumped at the sudden voice that spoke to me. The voice was kinda crackly, kinda like an old smoker, but I could tell it wasn't human. I looked up to where I heard it, only to find it was just a giant crow perched on the branch above me.

"Hmph." I snorted. "Like you would know what I was thinking."

The crow cackled, smoothing its cracking voice. "No, but I can tell by the way you look at the land before you that you aren't satisfied by it."

"Oh?" I chuckled. "And you think Vineam City is the place for me?"

"Ay, I'm surprised this is the first time you're hearing of it as it's the most balanced metropolis in the land."

"Ohoho, don't misinterpret my questioning. Of course I've heard of it. But forget it, that place reeks of human scum."

I watched as the crow looked to the north and then to the west.

"You outta, it is blossoming potential for young ones like you."

Young. Ha, that's a word that I certainly wouldn't use to describe myself. I wanted to choke on disgusted laughter but I refrained.

"Young?" I stood up on the branch, gazing at the crow with a sort of dead look. "Please. That's hilarious."

That said, I jumped off the branch and fell what seemed like 40 feet, using my makeshift wings as a sort of parachute. The air uplifted my dirty hair and dress. It was getting darker by the second ,and let me tell you, the Hills of Hyres is anything but safe starting at Dusk.

"Gonna be a full moon tonight. Have at it, ya' damn werewolves!" I giggled and stood up, facing where the sun was lining the mountain range with a silver light.

Vineam City...eh? Perhaps it has curse spells... or magic books! Pfft. What do I have to lose besides my sanity?

"City of vines, ehehe!" I laughed out. "Oh my! City of vines!"

By the now the sun had already set as I walked through the murky forest. The forest on the hills only extends several miles, but it's not the distance I'm worried about; it's the inhabitants that roam it. To be honest, I'm not scared of most of the natives in the Hills of Hyres, even at night. But when a full moon hits the sky, that's when the going gets tough, and in my case, there's no tough to get going. Everyone seems to act more sinister during a full moon, so I guess I'll watch my step. I gripped my spear and placed my hands behind my head casually, as if I was taking a relaxing stroll. I threw in a humming tune just to make it that much more enjoyable.

"And then you mix the grassweed with the duck blood and you have a healthy mix for werewolf sustain," I said kindly as I walked down the dirt path a young werewolf with scratches covering his body following next to me. My silver hair was messy on top of my head a pair black frame glasses pushed up to keep it out of my face and dark yellow eyes. I smiled cheeky like as I handed him a bottle. "Remember, just two times a day, and you'll be good to go," I said casually with a small smirk on my lips as I glanced over at him and he nodded running off into the dark. The smile disappearing on my face, I was always one to put up a front. I had to, after all, it was my job. Seeing creatures like that, used and abused from this world, it wasnt right. They needed help. I started whistling as I went deeper into the forest, the smell of burnt pine and blood stain dirt hitting my lungs. I always loved a nice stroll in the forest on a full moon, finding death and mystery with each step from my brown tattered boots. I wore my scientist bright white jacket with a white button up and black slacks finishing up my look. Was it safe being out here? No. But I wasn't looking for safe, I was looking for danger.

I heard in the distance a humming. I knew whoever was humming couldn't hear me on account of the distance, I had advanced hearing something that I master at a young age as a werewolf. As I got closer I could see a faint outline. I didn't react thought, I kept walking whistling as I got closer. I could faintly make out a short girls outline. That smell. Gross. I finally reached a point were I could see her, armed. I gave a friendly wave. "Little late to be wondering the forest little girl," I said teasingly. I could sense she was a creature, I just couldn't put my finger on it... a vampire? No. it couldn't be. Way to far and dangerous to be venturing this way.

As I walked and walked, something became more odd. Usually creatures stay away from vampires like me, but it seemed like something was following me. The odd thought that someone could be stalking me was really unsettling and kinda weird. I stopped dead in my tracks, rolling my peachy eyes over to what seemed like a tall man with ears. Great, werewolves, my favorite. "Oh how cliche. Big bad wolf stalking the little innocent girl." I groaned and put my spear out in front of me. "Alright so, do you want to go to granny's or do you want to snatch up an 'easy' treat." I giggled with a sarcastic manor, waving my spear at the figure. "Your choice~!"

"Now Now Red no need to get all crazy on me. I mean no harm. Just out for a lovely stroll..." I said as I chuckled lightly my finger touching the tip of her spear. "Your mother lets you play with sharp objects?" I said teasingly not being phased one bit by her aggressive manner. This wasn't the first time I've had a weapon pulled on me, and I was sure it wouldn't be the last.

"Tsk...! You gotta lot of nerve bringing up my mother into this! I'll kill you!" I gave the werewolf a nasty snarl and shook my head profusely. "Pfft. You think you're cheeky, smartass? Not even worth a fight." I glared at the man and closed my eyes, snapping my fingers. "So tell me, what business you have in my forest here?"

I smirked at her very abrupt first in counter. "Well besides as i pointed out enjoying my walk. I also am out looking for someone.... just like you," i said cheeky like my eyes locked on hers. I could tell she was confused. "I warn you though, youll never make friends smelling like that," i said casually as i turned to walk knowing she would follow. It was getting late. I knew she would be looking for me.

The woman's body slumped to the floor, throat cut and eyes shut. Cylia laughed quietly looking at her handiwork. "That was especially easy." She sheathed her dagger and walked up the stairs to the second story. She had learned it was easiest to travel by roof. She was less likely to be caught and apprehended. She stood on the windowsill and hoisted herself onto the roof, then walked over dozens of buildings until she reached the edge of the city.

A man waited for her in a dark alleyway. She dropped to the ground in front of him. "She's dead." He smiled under his cowl, pressing a large amount of money into her hands and then walking off. She grinned to herself before pocketing the cash. "Another successful day." She walked out of the city, giving the guards time to discover the body and cool down afterward.

I sniffed my arm and immediately red flushed my face with embarrassment. I shook my head and followed after with pouty footsteps. "Look dude... I dunno who you are, but I don't like you." I rolled my eyes and looked down, then back at him, noticing his features. Messy blonde hair. A scuffed up lab coat. Old boots. Do I even want anything to do with this guy? "Regardless... where did you come from?"

I walked through one of the oldest buildings in all of Vineam. Its dark maroon and grey walls once belonged to the first King. And also the last monarchy of the city. My family has learned over the last several generations that giving people a choice will never get you the result that you want.

My apologies. I digressed. I am a bit more... er. Spacey than my family would care to admit. I walked out of the dark halls. The heels of my boots clacking on the damp gravel walkway that led from the large 18 bedroom Medieval French Style mansion and family office. Now don't get me wrong. It's not an office. My family is more like an evolved gang. They have connections. They make threats. And they make things happen. And I am the next in line as the next head of house. If I can prove myself.

I wandered down the dark, wet streets of Vineam. My light blue eyes glanced up at the silver full moon. I can't help but wonder if he made quota. I neared the edge of town that was just a few blocks from the Mimieux Estate. The sound of gravel rustling under my black boots changed to the sound of leaves breaking under my weight. The breeze rushed through the trees, lifting my already short skirt. Why would my father design this? Freak.

I heard voices in the distance. I could tell one distinctly. Andrew. My speed picked up as I neared the voice. And there was another. It sounded as that of a young child. I had pistol at the ready, held up in a harness on my left thigh. But I wasn't intimidated. I approached the voices fearlessly, and even with boots, my steps hardly made a sound. My eyes first fell upon Andrew. The werewolf hired by my family for one purpose. Cure these poor creatures.

I looked from him to the young girl. "Well. A vampire, hm? I didn't know you had the ability to cure them as well." I said casually, the hat of my uniform leaving shadow over my light eyes until I looked over at her. Our eyes locking. Hm. Who disguises themselves as a filthy little girl? What a hideous creature.

I approached who i knew from familiar scent as Ms. Abigail. I chuckled at her statement looking down at the girl and back up at her. "Well well..." i glanced at the invisible clock on my wrist and back up to her again. "Time already to head back?" I said cheeky like ignoring her comments. "By the way this is red. Shes cute isnt she?" I said happily patting the little vamp on the head. I knew what she meant. It was bad. But. Wasnt isnt a bit a risk? I cant help what i dont know.

"Wait, hold up." I glared at the strange woman then back at the sketchy werewolf. "The hell? You think I'm gonna come with you? You're outta your mind, creep." I crossed my arms in a pouty motion and turned towards the forest's edge. Who were these people, and why now out of all times? Doesn't matter, 'cause I ain't stickin' around! I looked at the woman who approached. "Yo, and who are you?" Oh, but it makes sense now. There's not many vampires out here nowadays so it'd be safe to assume these two have some hidden agenda. I bursted out laughing hysterically. "Actually it doesn't matter, what's your plan? Gonna tie me up? Maybe rip my other wing off? Ohoho, or maybe you wanna just kill me?"

I glanced at the deranged young woman. My expressionless face only responding with a slight brow raise. "You are not within my city limits, young lady. The only thing I would like to do with you is give you a bath." I said in an almost casual tone. But of course, a subtle hint of cattiness in my voice. I've never played well with others.

I glanced back at Andrew. "Shall we head back, Doctor?" I asked simply. It wasn't really a question. It was a kindly hinted command.

I couldn't help but break out in a loud healthy chuckle. "Yes... yes. Thank you ms. Abigail," I placed both hands in my pockets of my slightly faded black slacks and started walking next to her. I glanced back at the little girl the moon light bathing us all in a nice accented blue. "You know... besides a bath we do have food, and a safe place.." I said softly a smile on my face. I wanted her to come with us, but she seemed stubborn, and almost unwilling. Some creatures specially in this land was unwilling to try and adapt, was she just another fallen creature? My brow raised as I awaited her response. I knew Abigail was annoyed, very unwanted by the idea of letting her in this town. But as the doctor I had the means of helping, right?

I pouted. I didn't want to trust these people but I also didn't have much of a choice as far as where to go. Plus, perhaps I could use these people to my advantage for my studies. With that thought, I calmed down and put on a subtle fake smile. "You know..." I looked up the woman. "I think you should let me stay with you all, I mean, not like I got anywhere else to go..." I snickered under my breath.

This poor little thing. Think that there was a way to exert independence in Vineam? Funny. I glanced at her, a smirk on my lips. "Excellent." I said casually and put my arm through the Doctors.

We headed back. For most others it would have been awkward walk back to the castle. For me? Quite enjoyable. As we approached the castle I glanced back at the young girl and then to the doctor. "Collect her information, Doctor." I commanded.

We had a bit of distance from the girl and us. So she was unable to hear our conversation. I glanced back a smirk on my lips. "All formalities and no fun makes doctor a dull boy," I said all in good humor with a light chuckle. I was going to get information, but maybe not on what they wanted. She was interesting to me. A young vampire like this? Meant generations had passed and she still was alive, it had been quite a bit of time since a vampire had entered this town, I wanted to dig deep. I glanced back at Abigail with a small smile and a wink. "So Red, don't you think Ms. Abigail fills out her uniform quite nicely?," I teased playfully.

I walked behind the pair as we walked to what seems like this "Ms. Abigail's" estate. I could see them whispering something to each, but couldn't quite make out what exactly they were saying. Regardless, I eyed the area in which we were walking, it was becoming less foresty and more like the entrance to a city.

"So this is Vineam city, eh?" I let out a breath of relief. "I was scared for a second. I thought you guys were gonna take me to some kinda dungeon." I chuckled to myself, I was obviously joking but there was some truth there. What can I say? I'm a paranoid girl, with every right to be so.

I rolled my eyes at the werewolf's tease. Doesn't this guy even have a sense of importance regarding this? Jeez, what a pain. "Yeah, sure." I muttered within earshot of the man. "Are you calling her fat?"

Masika Kakra

Swaying side to side was Masika's hips as she approached Anubis, her perfume store. Her cream, Egyptian cotton dress fluttered playfully against the wind along with her dark locks of hair entertwined with beads of gold. Masika and Pili's Egyptian attire always attracted customers. Eyes looked her way as her dress shimmered in the sun along with the jewelry she wore; it was the finest of gold with large torqouise stones made in a pattern recognized as Egyptian. She loved painting around her emerald green eyes with blue, gold and black liner. Her specialty was seducing men into buying her product. Oh how she loved to tease. Finally, she entered Anubis and she was greeted by a variety of exotic fragrances and a soft jingle that hung on the door. "Pi?!" She shouted abruptly. She was certain her sister was attending to her duties. Masika can sense Pili's presence telepathically. She stuck her nose in the air and looked around the room. For a moment, she admired the shapes of the different glass bottles that retained her specialty perfume. "I presume you're restocking." She said aloud as she saw some shelves vacant. "I'll take over in the evening. Don't let dust accumulate and be sure to recount the register before I arrive. Don't you dare stay hidden if customers await you here. One complaint and it will be off with your head." She eyed the room she presumed her sister to be in. "Good day," with her chin up she left Anubis feeling refreshed. She adored the scent that followed her as she exited her store. She closed her eyes as she breathed in her delightful perfumes. Just as she was about to take an other step, she collided with a young, pale girl. At first, her eyes widened with anger, but then she spotted a handsome devil. She fluttered her eyes, "Oh, pardon me." The young girl had a peculiar smell that she did not like. "Is this your younger sister?" She shifted her hip to the side and removed a hair that was on the young girl's brow. "Take this," she handed her a small tube with a cork, "A free sample from my store." She eyed the handsome man flirtatiously.

This woman that stood before us. She is everything wrong with this city. With her exotic appearence, blatant sex appeal, and a complete denial of any normalcy. She was nothing but a gypsy. I stood straight and glanced over at Andrew. Then the young. Them? Related. Hah.

"We are on official business, maiden. Refrain from your soliciting." I said sternly, but my eyes drifting down her. What? I can appreciate the female form.

I wasn't one to notice much from a lady, or even notice if one was quote 'flirting' with me. So it didn't phase me too much. I had a lot going on in my mind, being a scientist and all. "Ah now Ms. Abigail no need to be so harsh, but as she said we are on official business," I said simply feeling the tension grow. I smiled patting the young vamps head. "After all, the sun will be coming up soon, don't need a stinky mess to clean up," I teased cheeky like. "But thank you... Im sorry I didn't catch your name? I avoid perfume shops around here, there smells can be rather strong for my sensitive smell," I said honestly but all in good humor as I ruffled the back of my silver messy hair.

Pili Kakra

It has been hours since Pili has been in the store. Her nostrils already have become accustom to the many fragrances surrounding her and now it is almost as if she smells nothing. She was in the back storage area mixing lily, myrrh, and cinnamon to fill the vacant spaces on the left wall. By the register, she needed to restock the Cyprinum which contained henna, cardamom, cinnamon, myrrh and southernwood; it was one of their best sellers. Pili looked up past the door when she heard the bell of Anubis door ring. It wasn't too long for Pi to realize it was her sister checking in on her. Though she was self-efficient, her sister loved to pester and boss her around. She didn't mind at all. She felt it was Masika's way of showing love to her. Pili did wonder why her sister insists on speaking loudly instead of speaking with her telepathically. I am here, dear sister... Pi communicated monotonously. Indeed, I am restocking... she replied telepathically. She continued with her chore as her sister continued to speak aloud her various commands. Finally, her older sister dismissed herself and Pili was alone again. "Good day, dear sister" she muttered under her breath. Pili finished mixing the Susinum and gathered them. She walked toward the left wall with all the the glass bottles and placed them one by one to their designated locations. Dingaling Ding! The chimes went off in the front door. "Hello, welcome to Anubis." She turned to see that one of her regulars arrived. "The usual, Mrs. Bee?" The giant woman who needed to bend to get past our entrance nodded. Pili went to the back to gather the two custom made bottles that were the size of a human head. "Two Cyprinum bottles. That'll be 300." The large woman reached into her furry purse and handed her a card. She wore a large matching hat with her brown coarse hair was tied into a bun. Her skin was as dark as night and she wore a glittery dress that seemed from the twenties. Pili placed the two large bottles into a thick paper bag that was labeled Anubis. "Bye, Mrs. Bee!" The giant waved and left as silently as she came.

Ugh, who is this chick. I looked at the 'free sample' that was handed to me and glared up at the woman. She was wearing strange clothes and seemed to be showing a lot of skin, and as a vampire I don't really appreciate this kind of exposure. "Sorry, I don't take handouts." I growled at her. "Maybe instead of giving little girls samples, you could put on some clothes, eh?" As I said that, the werewolf patted my head, making me cringe as if it were disgusting bile. "Don't touch me! Hmph..!" I rolled my eyes, looking into the city. So this is Vineam City? I'll admit it looks way better than the Hills, but there's something I don't like about this place. I expected wizards, witches, and all those of the sort. But it feels more like a metropolitan if anything, which regular people.

Masika Kakra

Masika placed her hand on her hip as she eyed, what appeared to be, competition. With her other hand, she flung her hair to the side. "Solicitation? No, no, no. This was more of an act of kindness." She arched her brow when the young girl spoke, "Oh, what an ill mannered girl." She then smiled as the gentleman seemed not in the least bit interested. She was utterly disappointed, but she dared not to reveal her distaste, "I am Masika. Owner of Anubis." She shifted her hip to the other side, "Such a shame that you cannot handle exotic scents." She walked away from the two females and to the gentleman's side, "But, if you can handle me, I am certain you can handle Anubis." She winked and continued to walk in the opposite direction. Strange folk... Masika thought. She, again, flung her hair and swung her hips rhythmically as she sought to her next destination.

I slightly turned my head as she continued walking. That behavior was digusting. But also quite intriguing. There has been very few times that I have witnessed a woman so comfortable with her own sexuality.

Regardless. I work for the state. And I have an image to uphold. Waltzing around, strutting my hips to get my way. That is not how I was raised.
But it does look quite fun.

I glanced back over to the young girl. "Well she was right about one thing. You are quite a disturbing child." I snapped dryly and glanced back at Andi. "Shall we head back to the manor? I insist that you see to this child getting a bath." I added before we started walking again.
