Advice/Help Trying to Lure Unknown Fandom

Hey, need some tips to help get people into my RP, a Kirby RP that respects the source material but deviates in interesting ways. The biggest hurdle is getting past preconceived notions or feelings to a fandom I'm really only using as a nice backdrop to everything, I think.

I know this may not be helpful at all, but have you considered not doing it with a fandom attached? Like, this may not be advise you want if your primary interest isn't the fandom itself, but if you really just want it for a bit of backdrop why not just, like, making something original?

I fallen in love with the use of the backdrop. Similar to how people have used the Bible as a backdrop for various themes they want to get across, there is a set symbols imbued with meaning that can be used as shortcuts and be stacked to reach more complex ideas faster. In addition, I guess I kinda keep all my original stuff to my fiction I'm publishing, so roleplay using a fandom is a bit easier and more of the breather I'm looking for in roleplaying.

Yet you're trying to convince people who are not in that fandom. Using the backdrop for purposes of symbolism is an effort in vain if the people aren't already knowledgeable enough about said fandom to get it.

Not really, the symbols are still simple enough to recognize and understand quick enough-because they are well made symbols. So using them on conjunction with any symbols created in the roleplay are a plus in my book still. Like, using one of those PC part bundles but upgrading heavily.

if you could give an example of what your telling people who are unfamiliar with the source material and what the actual story is that might help. I'd be a perfect test because five seconds ago was the first time I had ever even heard the word Kirby so I have literally no idea what your talking about.

Also if a fandom is not mainstream than using it as short-hand is probably ill-advised. Using the Bible example - Not everyone is Christian but most people at least know Christianity exists and sort of the basic set of symbols attached. You don't have to have read the bible or even have seen it in person to know what it is and at least get the general idea of who Jesus is and what not.

However when the source material is obscure than it doesn't work as a shorthand because people won't know what your talking about in the first place. Like saying this uses the source material of Kirby in interesting ways is not helpful because I don't know what Kirby is in the first place. So I have no way of knowing what an AU Kirby would be either.

( fyi : I think you are talking about an AU? Or alternate universe version of kirby that uses parts of the canon but changes them around for the plot. But again I don't know what the story is nor what Original Canon Kirby is so I couldn't really say for sure )

That actually has helped, I've compared the roleplay to a One Piece-esque vibe to some with some success. Though I wouldn't say Kirby is too obscure since it is one Nintendo's Staples and a new game was just released to Switch. So symbols I'm going to use are already in the conscious for many. Kirby just isn't usually a subject for a RP because of how simple it is on surface level.

My point was more in how you described it as an obscure fandom. And the reasons that using one is a bad idea if you are trying to make a shorthand. As the definition of obscure means that not a lot of people are going to know the source material. And if they don't know the source material than using it to describe something else isn't going to really be useful.
