Uta

The Mask Maker
Tokyo Ghoul Prelude.

This is a story about how Ghouls came to be, and how they ended up as they are in the anime.

There is no set description of what this roleplay is because I would like to have the events that unfold be a surprise.

Furthermore the character sheets are not required. I don't want anyone to have an unfair advantage over their opponent just because they read your character sheet and develop a character in opposition to yours.

In a normal world there is but a tiny drop of entropy. This drop slowly turned into an ocean and began threatening the existence of humans. There is a very small but quick spreading threat that presses against the fabric of humanity.

It was a normal day for Kaito. He was at his usual dining place surrounded by people he knows. Ordering his usual which consisted of a chicken sandwich and orange juice. Thanking the waiter he takes out twenty dollars from his coat pocket and leaves it on the table. Today, he was going to interview for his new job; chief executive of advertising. He had practiced what he would say and what he would do. Arriving at the giant skyscraper a few minutes later.*Sigh*"You can do this Raika, your career depends on this" Muttering to himself as he opens the glass double doors and enters the building.

'...A mid twenties secretary sat at the sleek black desk architectured to modern standards. She had just finished up emailing a couple of important business contacts when the double doors swung open sending a bright glare across the smooth marble surfaces that composed the surroundings of the interior. She was a brunette, about 5'3"; her hair pulled up into a bun and half glasses pressed against the bridge of her nose helped to hide the subtleness of her cheekbones. She watched the silhouette approach the desk with her brown eyes curiously...'

Do you have an appointment?

@Maximus

Reviewing his notes, he almost doesn't notice that the secretary ask him if he had an appointment."Oh, yes, yes I have a appointment to meet Mr. Tukanaji." Stuttering as he takes out a comb and combs his messy blond hair back. Putting the comb away, he then takes out a wipe and wipes away the remaining morsels of the chicken sandwich. Now walking to the elevator he presses the button 35 and steps into the elevator along with several people cramming in.

'...A well built, rather tall man stood just beyond the elevator doors as he reached the 35th floor. He was staring at the watch on his wrist as the elevator dinged it's metal doors sliding open. He locks eyes with the blond haired gentleman stepping out...'

I presume you're Kaito? There was quite a rucuss downstairs when you flew past the secretary without checking in with her first, I thought the whole building was going to go into lockdown

'...Mr. Tukanaji laughed subtly under his breath...'

Jayden Nattie Giselle was having a modern-day crisis. "Oof..." Nat, as her friends called her, made a muted sound of pain as she stubbed her toe on her desk. In just 30 minutes, she would have to meet her supervisor for the first time, so she had to make a good impression. And she couldn't find her phone. "Where is that damn thing?" she grumbled, feeling around and under all of the furniture in her small apartment. It wasn't in the sofa, on her twin bed, or stuck in that tiny space between her wall and desk. Just as she threw up her hands in defeat, a vibrating sound came from near her microwave. She vaulted over the sofa, snatching up the object with a triumphant cry. "A-ha! Got you- Huh?" The caller ID wasn't one she recognized. She shrugged it off since she always named her contacts. Before pressing the lock button, she noticed her background was still a picture of her. She made a mental note to change that later.

<p><a href="<fileStore.core_Attachment>/monthly_2015_10/jl4XipYvGX8.jpg.5879aa5da9da194eba6d910011189f1f.jpg" class="ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image"><img data-fileid="81744" src="<fileStore.core_Attachment>/monthly_2015_10/jl4XipYvGX8.jpg.5879aa5da9da194eba6d910011189f1f.jpg" class="ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed" alt=""></a></p>

Now she could finish getting dressed. At the moment, she was only wearing a thin tank top and black tights over her underwear. Dashing to her closet, she pulled out a black, above the knee length skirt and plain white button-up shirt. She paused for a moment, holding up the shirt to a few others after throwing the skirt on her bed. "What would a super serious Investigator wear? Probably white," she mumbled after a few minutes of debating. "Then again... Oh, screw it!" Giving up, she threw on the clothes and went into the bathroom. After 15 minutes of making herself look like a normal human being and tying her hair in a bun, she dashed out of the door.

"Ohmanohmanohman." she breathed, all but running to the fancy looking building that was the Investigator's HQ. It was near a complex of other rich looking buildings. One, she knew from a friend, was some sort of scientific facility. She paused outside of the impressive feat of architecture. Poor Nat almost broke her neck trying to look up at the top. Being 5'3" definitely had its challenges. Snapping back to reality, she walked through the doors and attempted to find the right office. Since she had a clearance pass and knew the location, the main trouble was navigating the mouse maze of people walking around. Some people were getting coffee, running to the printers, or taking breaks.

She finally stopped when she reached the office with the name "Akiyama". Since she knew that was the right door, her eyes darted to the wood grain like she expected a demon to pop out any second. It was hard not to think about the rumors... With her her heart in her throat she knocked on the door.

'...Akiyama stood up from her desk and walked to her door and opened it, her eyes met with the young detective in training. She was a bit surprised to see her right outside of her door. She looked at her watch it was two minutes past the interview time. Her arm dropped to her side and she looked at the girl...'

Nat's head reeled as she tried to save face. With all that rushing she did to get there, she knew she wasn't on time. "A bit late, my apologies!" she said. Stiffly bowing, she tried to keep her tone as formal as possible. It was best to leave it at that to keep from sounding too apologetic. Excuses would just make her seem weak. As she rose from the bow, she tried to keep a closely guarded expression. Her nerves still showed through.

'If I'm going to be an Investigator, I can't let a little pressure get to me..." she thought. 'This is my senior officer. I have to show respect.'

'Even if she is scary.'

'...She stopped her piercing gaze into the young womans eyes. A subtle smile crossing her lips...'

We should get along just fine then... It's one thing if you're late and try to tell me you're not, it's another to tell me you're late and make excuses, and lastly telling me you're late and sound sincere... I'm glad you're the latter.

'...She stepped out of her doorway, and made a turn to the right that would lead her down a hallway...'

As an investigator in training... you're doing fine on your first day already. Sure you were late but we can sit and complicate things and waste time by pointless disciplinary action... but that's not going to teach you anything. Every single mistake you make in the investigation world will cost you severely on the field. If you're late to a crime scene for example... you will have to deal with the entire judicial system barring down on you because a notorious criminal got away due to your incompetence, and/or you will have to deal with another dead body turning up. Whichever comes first, I suppose.

'...She talked while leading the way to an elevator...'

However... if you continue to be late you will hinder your own performance and restrict the amount of resources, thus knowledge, to perform adequately on the job. If you are satisfied with that... you may get chewed up and spit out on your first day.

'...Her index finger compresses the elevator button. There was an immediate ding and the sliding metal door opened. She began to step inside expecting her partner to follow promptly...'

Today we go to the firing range.

Today we go to the firing range.
Nat relaxed a bit upon seeing the woman's smile. As she listened she gave a small nod of acknowledgement, but Akiyama seemed to have more to say, so she was content with being quiet. In the brief moment between that room and the hallway, the silence gave her time to organize her thoughts.

'I'm glad the rumors don't seem to be true... for now. She's just, hmm, a bit uptight I guess. ... I wonder how she is in the field, though...'

She followed close after Akiyama. As she listened to her, her face gradually turned grim. 'Every single mistake you make in the investigation world will cost you severely on the field' stuck out to her particularly. She didn't have time to dwell on it then, though, because she was determined to absorb every word.

As Akiyama continued to speak, a few thoughts were reinforced in her mind. Mistakes were not an option. Failure was not an option. She had to remember why she spent all of this time to become an Investigator in the first place. Those that were wrong would be punished and brought to justice...

If only she knew.

She stepped inside the elevator and obediently stood to the side, when Akiyama said, "Today we go to the firing range." Nat couldn't help but smile. Finally, something she was good at.

'...Akiyama stared at the numbers as they changed becoming lower and lower. They were finally in the basement level of the building. When the door slid open it revealing a long metal hallway that was 5 times the width of the one upstairs. The doors were metal as well standing about 12 feet tall and matched the width of the hall. She stepped out of the elevator and began walking towards a room full of individuals firing weapons inside. They could be seen through sound proof plexi-glass. She took a keycard and pressed it against the module on the wall. The huge metal doors opened and instantly they were met with the sound of gunfire...'

Let's see how well you do on these tests...

'...She shot Jayden a quick look that was a mixture of curiosity and sadism before looking away and leading her through the checkpoints as they were scanned with metal detectors several times...'

First things first... pick a firearm.

Nat suppressed a giddy smile as she walked over to the walls of guns. While she wasn't a gun expert by any means, she appreciated the look of them. There had been a time when she had more or less obsessed over them and done a lot of research.

She barely acknowledged the various rifles on the walls - they were highly impractical. First of all, they were large and bulky. Not only does this pose a problem with concealing it, but it would have too much recoil. Not to mention any of the burst fires or automatics were dangerous to use in a civilian setting. Those were better for assault or strike teams.

She walked along the rows of smaller firearms. Some of them looked promising, but were too bulky. When she spotted a Desert Eagle among the mix she almost let out a laugh. Did anyone really pick that one? While it was easily one of the most popularized, it was more of something to show off. Too clunky, prone to misfiring...

She quickly moved on.

Glocks. That was more promising. She remembered reading in a few articles that various police forces would use them. Although tempted, she paused when she noticed the various SIG models. A particular gun had stuck out to her – the P220 Compact. It was an easily concealable, SA/DA model that could hold 6+1 rounds. The slim profile made it easier for her to hold. Picking it up, she headed back to Akiyama.

Here is where we will start your training... down the column you will see several rows of targets. One at 100m, 200m, 300m, etc. The closer targets are going to be moving and of course, your objective is to hit within an inch from the critical points.

'...she points to a poster on one of the walls of the blast wall...'

As you can see the primary targets are dead center of the chest, this is the esophagus, spine, and lastly... the spine. Hitting the spine causes paralysis or death. Then of course the lethal shots to the head, although I could go into grueling detail I don't think I'll have to explain that to you. Lastly, you can aim at limbs to demobilize a target. As you become more and more experienced in the field you will obtain new, and important information that will help you become a better investigator.

Before getting in she made sure to put on protective headphones and eyeglasses. Making sure to get the right type of ammo, she went inside of the booth. She loaded the cartridge and cocked the gun to load the first bullet. Although she'd never brag about it, Nat was a pretty good shot as long as her nerves didn't get to her. She took aim at the 100m target that was moving back and forth. It took a bit more concentration for the first shot because of the slightly heavier trigger pull. Even so, she hit the 7 ring on the torso marker. The subsequent shots fired off quickly after one another. She was constantly adjusting her aim. Being close, she landed all of her shots within the proper markers. The last bullet hit the spot right next to the 'x' on the head.

The same process was repeated for the 200m and 300m targets. She was able to get 4 to 5 good shots with the last one either being a critical hit or a miss. For the last target, she had accidentally adjusted too low and hit where the crotch would be.

You test scores will remain confidential. However you may feel free to utilize this facility any time you deem necessary. All weapons and ammo used must be accounted for and documented. Failure to do so will result in your probation, and termination of future facility use. Are we clear?

What do you hope to achieve in becoming an investigator?

At Akiyama's question, Nat stood to face her and looked into her obscured eyes. Her face and posture were filled with determination. "Ma'am! I hope to diligently protect the public. I hope to assist in solving crimes as quickly and as efficiently as possible to reduce the harm done to both citizens and my fellow investigators!" She spoke the last sentence quickly, not even pausing for breath. This was something she had thought a lot about. It meant so much to her. She couldn't remember how many times she had asked her father to help her practice what she would say.

"Ah, sure thing," Nat said. She made sure to put back all of the equipment in its proper location. As they began to walk, she tried to make conversation about the topic at hand. "Where is your favorite place to eat?" she asked, genuinely curious. There was always the cafeteria for investigators and personnel, but since she had never been there before she didn't know how quality the food was. There were also several other locations dotted around the nearby area. She could remember a few fast food places, a few sit-ins, and the occasional bar and grill that would fill up quickly after working hours.

Nat usually ate healthily, but when was feeling adventurous one of her favorite things was a cheeseburger. Burger Queen was a pretty good place, cheap too, and the service was always friendly. Her mind wandered a bit as they walked and talked.
