if the world was ending
Rationality had flown out the window the moment she saw Careโs sling. Star was not used to being angryโit was simply an emotion that didnโt exist within her small frame. Even when Brandon was teasing her, she was mad at him. But during her fight with Careโฆ sheโd definitely been angry. So, so angry. She regretted it, but now she was mad at Care all over again.
Starโs hands were on her hips, her blue eyes narrowed into slits as she watched Care clamber down the tree. She tried not to let it show that she wanted to wince every time Care struggled maneuvering with one arm. Gods. She also tried not to show the shock she felt as Care explained how sheโd gone off hunting monsters. This was all her fault, wasnโt it? It had to be! It was their fight sheโd been trying to cool off from.
Her cool faรงade caved once Care was done speaking. Star was ready to break down all over again. Closing her eyes, she covered her face with her hands. โIโm such an idiot.โ Her hands went for her hair, grabbing chunks of it in a vise grip. She hadnโt felt the need to do this in years; it was an old habit left over from her childhood. Whenever she was particularly stressed, she would grab her hair to ground her. She needed some godsdamn grounding right now. โYou shouldnโt have been alone, Care. Be angry at me all you want, but godsโฆ donโt do that.โ Guilt was clawing its way through her chest. Sheโd messed up so badly in one night.
Were those tears in her eyes? Yeah, they were. Star blinked them away and turned away from Care, trying to stitch herself back together. She wasnโt used to so many emotions rolling through her at once. How could one person make her fall apart like this? She was starting to believe that maybe this wasnโt good for her. If Care was going to do stupid shit like this, all because of her, wasโฆ was any of this worth it?
But now wasnโt the time for any of that. Sheโd made a commitment to help Care out, and she was going to follow through. After that, well. Sheโd figure out what to do then. Maybe. Hopefully. โI came to tell you that Brandon will be there. Thatโs all you needed me for, right? I didnโt eat breakfast yet, so I should probably go do that before they clean up.โ Even though it pained her to do it, she glanced over at Care, gauging her reaction. โUnless you need me for a bit longer.โ It wasnโt an offer, not really.
But hell if she needed the slightest sign from Care that she was a little less stubborn about all of this than sheโd been during their fight.
