if the world was ending
Rationality had flown out the window the moment she saw Careβs sling. Star was not used to being angryβit was simply an emotion that didnβt exist within her small frame. Even when Brandon was teasing her, she was mad at him. But during her fight with Careβ¦ sheβd definitely been angry. So, so angry. She regretted it, but now she was mad at Care all over again.
Starβs hands were on her hips, her blue eyes narrowed into slits as she watched Care clamber down the tree. She tried not to let it show that she wanted to wince every time Care struggled maneuvering with one arm. Gods. She also tried not to show the shock she felt as Care explained how sheβd gone off hunting monsters. This was all her fault, wasnβt it? It had to be! It was their fight sheβd been trying to cool off from.
Her cool faΓ§ade caved once Care was done speaking. Star was ready to break down all over again. Closing her eyes, she covered her face with her hands. βIβm such an idiot.β Her hands went for her hair, grabbing chunks of it in a vise grip. She hadnβt felt the need to do this in years; it was an old habit left over from her childhood. Whenever she was particularly stressed, she would grab her hair to ground her. She needed some godsdamn grounding right now. βYou shouldnβt have been alone, Care. Be angry at me all you want, but godsβ¦ donβt do that.β Guilt was clawing its way through her chest. Sheβd messed up so badly in one night.
Were those tears in her eyes? Yeah, they were. Star blinked them away and turned away from Care, trying to stitch herself back together. She wasnβt used to so many emotions rolling through her at once. How could one person make her fall apart like this? She was starting to believe that maybe this wasnβt good for her. If Care was going to do stupid shit like this, all because of her, wasβ¦ was any of this worth it?
But now wasnβt the time for any of that. Sheβd made a commitment to help Care out, and she was going to follow through. After that, well. Sheβd figure out what to do then. Maybe. Hopefully. βI came to tell you that Brandon will be there. Thatβs all you needed me for, right? I didnβt eat breakfast yet, so I should probably go do that before they clean up.β Even though it pained her to do it, she glanced over at Care, gauging her reaction. βUnless you need me for a bit longer.β It wasnβt an offer, not really.
But hell if she needed the slightest sign from Care that she was a little less stubborn about all of this than sheβd been during their fight.
