"Where would I run to?" Nicole tried desperately to keep from crying. "I have nowhere to go. Remember? You found me on the street." Repeatedly, she wiped her face. "I won't leave you either. Please don't make me go without you."

"You have to! I won't leave you alone! You helped me. Now I want to help you. Just tell me what to do. I'll do it." Her grip tightened on his shirt. She was crying.

Instinctively, Nicole nestled into him, enjoying his touch. "Leland, I am so scared. What if we can't figure out what they're doing? I couldn't take it if you got hurt."
