    overview.

    Y
ou are dead. Or, perhaps more accurately, you've been dead for quite some time. Perhaps you were never technically alive to begin with, though that would start to lead into heavy debates on the nature of souls and mortality itself and, quite frankly, that's not really your department.

The finer details of the afterlife are rather like that in general, often not relevant to you. Even for those who have been living and working within The Crossroads since before the dawn of time, most will just look at you and shrug when you ask what goes on behind the scenes. What is known is that Souls come through The Gateways into The Soul Keep for processing. They answer their questions, perhaps ask a few of their own, and then when their name and ticket number is called they disappear behind one of the many, many ornately decorated doors connected to the eternal Waiting Room. Anyone who claims to truly know much more than that is either lying, or someone of a much higher authority than they are currently letting on.

Sometimes however, souls are reluctant to move through the doors. They can't be persuaded by gentle reassurances, answers to lingering questions, or the 7ft tall reaper with the obsidian-grade scythe in their hands trying to nudge them through. Other souls yearn to go through the doors but seem to wait far longer than others for their names and ticket numbers to be called, watching as their friends, family, loved ones, and descendants pass through the doors before them. Some souls, very rarely, are never even given a ticket number in the first place.

It's likely that you were once one of these aforementioned souls. The Ticketless come from all walks of life and points in time, with seemingly very little rhyme or reason as to why they were singled out in such a way from the crowd. Nonetheless, they are always instead directed to a different part of Soul Keep, where they will eventually be interviewed and eventually undergo the recruitment process.

There are many careers to be found in The Crossroads, and while it offers flexibility towards its workers there are seemingly no options for one to outright quit the new reality they have been given. The Ticketless may find themselves in the role of a reaper, appearing to souls when their time upon the mortal plane is done and guiding them to The Soul Keep for processing. Others may find themselves in one of the various roles situated in The Crossroads itself, perhaps as a guard to the doors, a caretaker for waiting souls, or as the local entertainment trying to keep them in an amiable mood. You could instead involve yourself with the paperwork side of things, scurrying about to fetch answers for waiting souls, or someone who sits at their desk and maintains the records for each individual. Generally speaking, The Crossroads are happy for you to take on any job that needs someone to take on it, as long as you perform it well.

Most recently, however, there has been a call for a new role amongst the denizens of The Crossroads. Little information is being freely volunteered, spoken instead in hushed whispers in the ear and mysterious summons to dark, dingy areas of The Crossroads that seem to go by unwatched by other souls. There is talk of something unnatural lingering in The Crossroads, a presence neither alive nor dead, and a whispered promise that you, too, can be part of a plan it is brewing if you know how to find it.

Perhaps you are curious, and seeking out a sign for how to speak to this supposed presence. Or maybe you want nothing to do with it, and merely have a habit of being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Regardless, you are a Soul Keeper bound to the whims of The Fates, and thus our story starts with you.

Discord, OOC Thread

Update: Finally had a chance to gather up all my information into a Lore thread, which can be found here for anyone interested.

Things are still malleable with it though, and I'm very much open to suggested changes or further questions about the world :V Please feel free to leave a message here if you'd like to know more about the world or want to brainstorm a new concept for it.

Quite interested.

One caveat: I am currently on restricted internet access (work situation) and I'm not able to log into Discord, but I can access the site readily and utilize the OOC thread. These conditions will remain until about spring next year. Is that alright or would you prefer me to sit out for convenience? (I'll just watch the thread instead!)

Second, a question: Is it possible to choose a role but have PREVIOUSLY been a member of a different role? For example, an Archivist who used to be a Reaper, or vice versa?

Hey there, thanks for showing an interest :V That's 100% fine by me, I mostly just prefer to use Discord for ease of chatter so if you're fine with just using the OOC Thread to communicate back and forth then that's all good by me. Here's the link to the one I just put up: Multiple Settings - The Soul Keepers || OOC Chat

As for the second question, yep, characters can change roles of pretty much their own free will (though they may or may not be encouraged/discouraged towards one in particular by their peers). What is of note is that their initial abilities may be more suited to their first role though, and that these don't immediately change to accommodate their new role. A former Archivist-turned-Guardian for example might still have the ability to summon books from the repository at will to research information, but potentially lack a common Guardian ability such as enhanced strength or extra-sharp senses.

Yep, currently open to any to join :V Hoping to finish setting up a few things today including the Discord, so will send links and such once ready.

Ohhh, this looks interesting. I wasn't wearing my reading glasses when I read through the post so I could've missed this but may I just ask for clarity's sake if we're going to be using realistic or anime faceclaims?

Hey there :V Admittedly I haven't decided one way or the other so I'm open to a vote for it if people have a preference? I've been used to just using picrews or drawing my ocs in the past prior to joining to RP Nation.

Oh sweet, personally I'd prefer drawn faceclaims since I also like drawing my OCs :smilepuff:

Haha no worries, yeah I'll usually personally lean to found art or drawn OCs but I'm not too fussy on the matter for this roleplay.

Anyway, unfortunately didn't get as much time as I thought I would to work on things but I did get a Character Sheet section set up here. Discord is still under construction but I'll send out links for that too in a few minutes, so feel free to chat via there or on the OOC thread if you have any questions and such.
