Just warming up
❝ The Solemn City ❞
introduction.
“With no hope to match the might of the Fallow, we went into hiding.”
premise.
We’ve heard this story before many times, but Papa never seemed to grow tired of it. There were other stories, but this one rang the loudest in our minds. There was a time when the mortal race thrived. They lived freely under the protection of the Fallow; great beings of old that blessed the land and sea, the earth and skies, the food they ate, and the water they drank. Their blessings are what gave mortals their powers.
Now Papa, he remembered everything. Every waking hour could be recalled with exact precision. So, it didn’t seem odd when he talked about the stories he’s heard or the things he’s seen. The story always started the same way.
"One day, the Fallow turned on us. From them came horrid beasts that slaughtered us. With no hope to match the might of the Fallow, we went into hiding and we’ve lived like that to this day."
Papa used to say that the moral of the story was that “we needed to live good lives.” It was the sins of the mortal race that turned the Fallow against us. We deserved it. This was our judgment. It certainly seemed that way. We’ve yet to find others like us in the world and some days, it feels almost like we are the last ones left. It was certainly foolish to believe that anyone could survive outside of our burrow, nestled deep under a hill and covered by the roots of a large pine that seemed to stand taller than the other trees of the forest; the forest full of towering trees. That was probably the most remarkable thing about the lives we led. Everything made us feel small.
The trees stretched for hundreds and hundreds of feet, appearing almost as if they could run their green fingertips through the clouds. The creatures that roamed were huge, casting shadows along the ground. Sometimes they even covered the moon. Well, the word creature was putting it lightly. Papa called them monstrosities and they came from the Witch of the Woods. We’ve never seen this Witch but Papa has once. He said that if she ever found us, we wouldn’t be alive. If we were out of the Burrow past dark, he would sit us all down and warn us of the Witch before telling us we had to wash the bowls after dinner that night. Sometimes we wished he was still around, even if it meant getting chastised about staying out past dark. We buried him in a room tucked away at the very back of our Burrow with flowers, like the ones he used to take care of, and with the walking stick he used to hit us with if he caught us using foul language. Now it was just us. No more stories. No more tales. No more warnings. Only a few of us didn’t heed Papa’s rules. We wept for those we couldn’t bury.
The life left to live will consist of experiences of our own and hoping that our dear Burrow would never be discovered. We’ve seen the beasts that roam the forest searching for others like us. Papa was right about one thing. The danger that sought to kill us brought judgment. Either we had what it took to survive, or we would be lost among the bones that scattered through the annals of history.
