Today was like any other day when the daily news came on the tv that afternoon... But with one exception. Today the crowned prince Aiden would list off the girls he has chosen for his Selection out of the girls who applied for the competition for the prince's hand in marriage and eventually the position of Queen of Illea. As the news host rattled on about how The Selection was such a great thing and how it united the people with the royals Aiden stood just off camera, actually he was standing in front of his own camera with his father, the King standing somewhere in front of him though where he couldn't tell because of the blinding lights that were on him, waiting for his que to make a short introduction and emphasize how he was honored to invite the Selected girls into his home. Was it childish of him to not want to do this? To put all this stress on his shoulders to find his future wife, mother of his children and most importantly, future queen? Someone he would have to spend the rest of his life with in the span of a little less than a year? Somehow that didn't seem particularly fair to him.

Before he knew it Aiden's que had come and gone while he stood there on live television looking like an idiot. He could vaguely hear his father's distinct voice cursing under his breath before he came to, dragging himself from his worried thoughts and had the decency to look embarrassed before he stumbled over his words starting the small speech he had planned, his mind for a panicking moment going completely blank before he finally found the words he wanted. "M-my apologies. I suppose I was entranced about the prospect of meeting all the wonderful young ladies I am about to list, one of which will be my future queen one day." He started with a small embarrassed smile, which got some empathetic sounds from the ladies on the soundstage and some scoffs from the men. And despite his positive spin on the statement it was true... Just in a different light

As smooth as Aiden tried to be, his father knew exactly how the young man felt, he had been in the same position once after all. He just hoped his boy would be able to handle his stress better than this. After all it was part of the job description of being king.

Aiden went on to reiterate how it's an honor to be selected and how the families of the Selected ladies will be provided for while the girls were in the crown's care, as well as mentioning that all the girls that have been Selected but not chosen to be the one will be moved up the caste system to be twos, unless they decide to marry down of course. When he finally got to the list of girls, who's names and faces his father had him memorize, his hands started to shake. This was the beginning of the end for him. He would have to date 35 girls at once and from them choose his wife, the future queen of his kingdom. Of course he could call for a redo but that was bad form... Either way he'd never be a free man again. Not that he's actually been a man all that long.

He pushed his hands into his pockets to hide their shaking, not sure how much of him would be showing on everyone's tv screens, as he rattled of names being very careful with their pronunciations and picturing each girl as he named her. In everyone's homes the name and picture of each girl would be plastered somewhere on the screen next to him accompanied by the girl's caste. When he finally finished he had to take a deep breath to compose himself, he knew this year was going to be rough for him filled with women's hormones and jealously. He would be lucky to make it out unscathed. He ended his announcement by saying that a representative of the crown would come to pick each girl up in the morning and to only pack any necessary family memorabilia as an ample amount of dresses would be provided for them.

And with that his camera turned off and the news host started talking again. Aiden could finally breath easy, well, until tomorrow night at least when he would meet them all face to face.

Anna found herself for the first time in her short life glued to the news. Today was the day that she along with others in the rebellion would find out if their plan worked. Normally she wouldn't have bothered with the Selection, but she had actually applied to take part in the compitition for prince Aiden's hand in marriage. Not to win, but to hopefully bring about change and destroy the caste system. She was a seven and didn't really think she would even be able to compete with the girls from four let alone two. But there were people who believed in her and were counting on her.

She wasn't about to let them down, she would try. That was if she even made it into the Selection, they always chose at least one person from each caste. To supposidly unite everyone but that was ridiculous if they wanted to unite all the people there were better ways to go about it other than some dumb dating game show thing. Well that's how she felt anyway. Anna tried not to groan as the host went on and on, then the moment finally came the prince Aiden reading the list of the thirty-five girls who would try and win the prince's heart and hand.

Anna was a whirlwind of emotions when Aiden finally came on she couldn't help but wonder if his freezing up was a plan to show he was human to or to gain some emotional responses from the people or if it was genuine. She tried not to scoff at his response to freezing up. Anna just wanted to hear the list, knowing full well that she wasn't going to be on it. She had only applied for the rebellion, and she knew that the odds of her making through the first round were slim to none.

Her heart almost stopped when she saw her face and heard her name. This had to be some sort of nightmare, or was it a dream? She wasn't sure which it was, but she knew for certain that she was awake and this was really happening when her mother pulled her into a tight hug. It broke Anna's heart she was going to go away from her home and family for much to long. The better she did in the compitition the more likely she would be able to change the prince's mind, but the better she did the longer she'd be left wondering how her family was doing without her, what the rebellion was working on, not to mention the weight she now felt on her to succeed. She felt like she was being torn in two, on the one hand she wanted to stay and look after her family on the other she had the chance to make things better not just for her family but for other families as well.

Finally Anna returned her mother's embrace and fought of the tears. She had to pack, and get ready to leave the only place she'd ever been, and she had a job to do. The people's needs out weighed her wants and needs, that was what the rebellion taught her. "I have to pack, it won't take long." She said softly and left her mother's side. Anna went into her small bedroom and sat down on her bed that was without a doubt older than she was. She stared at the floor for awhile before letting the tears fall. They were a combination of fear, happiness, regret, pride and worry. Once she finished crying alone as she hated for anyone to see her that weak, she took a breath and packed a small bag. It contained, a pair of pants, an old jacket that had been mended numerous times, yes dresses would be provided but sure they wouldn't have to wear dresses all the time. She also packed a small picture of her parents and herself when she was around five years old, and lastly a teddy bear that was missing an eye, and a leg. The thing used to be her father's and that along with the picture where the only things she had left of her father.

With her bag packed she went back out to spend sometime with her mother. As this was the last night they would have together for along time. Anna had decided that she wouldn't do well in two so she'd return to seven and stay with her mother. It was for both their benefits and to reassure her mother that she would be fine. Even though she really had no clue if she would be, it was just something you said to make the other person feel better. Her mother cried, and had no clue as to the real reason she had applied. Anna intended to keep it that way. So she'd just let her mother think she wanted to marry the prince, but how could anyone want to marry someone they didn't really know. Not only that but she was going to be focused on winning the challenges set before the contestants, it really wasn't the best environment for her to get to know him. Then again he had to deal with thirty-five girls at the same time who all supposedly want to be with him. It was a rediculious situation for everyone involved.

Finally her mother went to sleep and while sleep would be very important for her what with all the challenges she was going to have to overcome, she knew that she wouldn't sleep well that night. There nerves were to much and there were too many people counting on her. She laid down and closed her eyes but found herself wondering just how far would she make it, and decided that she had to make to the last ten at the very minimum. Ideally though make it to the final two, then at least there was one girl there who actually cared for the guy and she should have made some sort of impression on him by that point. All of this was easier said then done she would have to be ready for anything during the Selection.

Sleep did finally take her, though it wasn't a deep restful sleep. It only lasted about two hours but that was better than nothing. Anna gave up on sleep got up and dress, grabbed her bag then went to the living room to wait for the people who would take away. Life as she knew it was about to change, and she had a job that needed to be done sleep or no sleep. Anna wondered just what awaited her and what was prince Aiden really like, was he a good guy or a bad guy. She'd find out soon enough though she doubted that anyone would show up at four in the morning, so she sat with her thoughts trying to figure out the best way to make a good first impression.

When Aiden finally got himself to move off the soundstage his father smacked him in the back of the head almost playfully. They shared a look and then walked away together smiling lightly, Niklaus giving his son pointers on the best ways to weed out the weak links. Though with everything going through his head, Aiden wasn't really listening. Later that night sleep proved to be evasive, leaving the young man to attempt to sort out his scattered thoughts. Well at least until they were totally lost to the wind when his youngest brothers screaming jolted him from his bed. Why little Rowan's nursery was so close to Aidens rooms he could only guess at. But it seemed to have been done on purpose because Aiden was the only one able to calm the infant down at night.

Aiden made his way through the hall, barely dressed in only boxers and a tank top. He met a flustered nanny at Rowan's door and dismissed her so she could go get some sleep. Aiden walked into Rowan's room only for the screaming to get louder. Aiden picked up his youngest brother and cradled him in his arms, cooing at and rocking him to calm the infant down. Before long the little tyke was quiet but awake and Aiden moved to sit on the window sill humming what he thought was Rowan's favorite song; fireflies by owl city along with some others of the same topic. Before either of them knew it the sun had risen and the girls in Aiden's selection started to show up.

Aiden pointed out which girls were who to his brother from their perch, watching them all trickle in one by one and enter his home, undoubtedly greeted by one of their three 'handlers' or caretakers that would look after them while they were here. Rowan seemed to like to see the girls so Aiden stayed as long as he could with his brother in the window until he absolutely had to leave to get dressed and prepped to meet the girls. He sent a servant not to fetch Rowan's nanny and by the time he got back to his own room his suit was already laid out for him all pressed and so neat he almost didn't want to touch it... Almost.

Duty still called so he put on the suit and made his way through the castle, avoiding the wing he knew the girls would be prepped and housed in, ending up in the grand parlor room where he was meant to meet the girls to ensure things were to his likeing. Then to the dining room and the kitchen to do more of the same and confirm the dinner menu for later tonight. As soon as he was satisfied with everything he went out to the guarded garden, a precaution due to the rebel attacks on the castle, to take a breather for a few minutes before he was supposed to meet the girls.

He enjoyed the peace and stillness of this little slice of nature even if it was all cultivated but he was never allowed to stay out here long due to fear of the rebels. Aiden sat on a bench under his favorite tree, out of the line of sight from most of the rest of the garden planing to just sit there quietly until a guard told him it was time to come back inside and meet the girls

Anna had about an hour to herself and her thoughts. Her mother had to work early doing laundry for a nursing home, it was hard and not very pleasant work, but it paid the bills for the most part. Things had gotten harder once her father died, but they still managed. Her mother gave her an hug and a kiss good bye, seeing as it wasn't possible for her to miss any work even by an hour. So they said their goodbyes and Anna watched her mother leave. It was odd knowing that she wouldn't be here for dinner, that she wouldn't spend her day doing things for the rebellion, she wouldn't be sleeping in her bed again not for a long time.

She kept a stiff upper lip, as the time seemed to move by slowly. Finally a car pulled up and a woman that Anna had never seen before got out. That had to be the representative of the crown that was going to get her. The woman's clothes were much to nice, and she was wearing make up, and it looked like she actually took time to style her short brown hair. Soon she was at the door and Anna answered it. The woman looked at some papers in her hand and tried to smile sincerely but it was obvious she wasn't that happy to be here. "Hello Anna, I'm Penelope I'm here to take you to the Selection. Are you ready to leave?" She asked. Anna nodded and grabbed her bag and followed Penelope to the car and sat in the back seat. She had ridden in a bus once and this was similar, but it was still all so new.

"Once we arrive, you'll be introduced to your three handlers, er, caretakers they'll look after you while you are with us. You'll meet prince Aiden later today and your caretakers will make sure that you are presentable." Penelope explain and Anna looked off three caretakers why would she let alone any of the girls need three people to take care of her, and apparently a t-shirt, jeans with holes in the knees, and worn out sneakers where not acceptable attire for the prince. She was a bit put off by all of this, but if she had to put up with it for the sake of change she would.

The rest of the dive was done in silence, Anna was grateful for that. As they got closer it felt like the butterflies in her stomach had turned into bees. The car came to a stop with lots of other similar cars. "Alright, get out and head over to the registration desk there you'll meet you hand...caretakers and see where you and the others will be staying, there are signs and staff available if you get lost." Penelope said as she turned to look at Anna. "Okay, thank you." She replied and grabbed her bag. She closed the car door and as she looked around in made her feel really out of place. She didn't belong here, and some of the looks she was already getting from the girls from the high castes told her that too. She shook her head and looked around some more as she made her way to the registration desk. Anna could have sworn she saw someone in a window, but who ever it was left, and they were put out of her mind when she made it to the desk. Once she got registered she was swept away by her three caretakers, a man and two women.

It was sort of a blur all she remembered was the woman with pink hair, Heidi, was taking her measurements, the woman with black hair, Georgia, was combing through her hair, and the man, Scott was muttering to himself about colors and what went with what. They were very efficient and kind for the most part. Once Heidi and Georgia finished Scott smile. "Great now we have all we need and I'll show you where you will be staying, and get you all settled in. Then we'll come back here and get you ready to meet the other girls and the reason you are here, to meet the prince." He said gently, and showed her around the wing where she and the others would be staying.

Once that tour was over and done with she was forced into one of those ridiculous dresses along with all the other girls. Then they got to meet eachother. Anna was happy to find other sevens and even some eights. Some of the two and threes however she'd liked to have thrown mud in their faces. But no she had to be nice and make it to the top ten at least. Until she got a better read on everyone it was best not to ruffle any feathers. But the whole room was filled with excitement as well as tension and the time approached to meet the prince, which made it all the harder to stay on everyone's good side.

Anna and the other girls were placed in five lines of seven. Standing there in a nice neat order waiting for prince Aiden to make his grand entrance. As the moment got closer she started to wonder just what sorts of things she have to do to prove she deserved to be here and what would it take to get close to Aiden, he was still a human being he just had a fancy title so hopefully she could find something they had in common and use that for the time being to keep his attention. That was going to be difficult given the thirty-four other girls fighting for him too. Anna took a few deep breaths to calm the bees in her stomach down. She was ready, she was going to get his attention and she would make it to the final two. Anna told herself as the excitement in the room grew.

When the guard came to escort Aiden out of the garden, Aiden went but not without complaint. He saw the necessity for the selection but there were defiantly better ways to force him to choose a bride but this has been the tradition since the beginning of Illea and he had no power in changing it. At least not yet. But that was his only issue, because it directly affected him. He had no problem with the caste system, eating out of his father's hand when he was told ages ago that it was the best way to keep the peace. It didn't help that he's never left the castle walls either to experience what real life was like. That also would be part of the reason all the girls had been cleaned and put in pretty dresses, so their original caste wouldn't show. They all look like ones now.

When Aiden finally made his way into the grand parlor room he was accompanied by a guard and a pair servants each holding a box, one filled with leather bound books and the other was filled with smaller boxes. Aiden himself was carrying an accordion folder with each girl's application in it. His plan was to treat this whole ordeal like one long drawn out job interview... At least until he inevitably developed feelings for one of them. When Aiden saw how the girls were lined up all nice and neat he was slightly surprised, looking around for a moment before he addressed the girls.

"Well... It looks like someone has OCD." He started off looking pointedly at the head handler who would be I charge of the girl's lessons. "Please ladies, find a seat and make yourselves comfortable. We are going to be here for a while, but afterwards I promise a three coarse dinner. Just think of this as a job interview and everything will go smoothly." And that was it, no grand speech or introduction. He figured the girls already knew who he was and didn't want to prolong dinner any more than it needed to be. Really he just wanted to get this over with. He pulled a random book from the box of leather bound books and read the name off the spine. One Stacy Garcia was the first lucky lady to sit down one on one with Prince Aiden.

Sitting just out of ear shot from the rest of the girls with Stacy, that 'interview' and every one that followed went something like this: Aiden would explain what the notebook was for and let the girl skim over the entry about her application, initial thoughts on the girl based on her picture and the information she gave. Next he would show the girl her application to make sure the information on it was correct and written by her and not a family member forcing her into this. Then Aiden would ask an average of three questions and then ask the girl if she had any questions for him. When that was over with Aiden gave the girl the option to pick one ring out of the four he presented her with and the ring she chose she kept. Then he would dismiss her, she'd leave the room, and he'd write a moment in her notebook before placing one of three colored tags-red, yellow, or red- based off of his thoughts on their encounter (there were way more yellows than reds or greens, and more reds than greens). And then there was one.

The last book to be pulled from the box was the one set for Anna. Aiden, instead of calling for her like he did the rest of the girls after he was finished writing in the last notebook putting a yellow tag in it, simply motioned her over. He felt no need to call for her since she was the last and he was tired and hungry and just wanted this to be over. When she was seated across from him he sighed and then went into his speech about the notebook for the thirty-fifth time. "This is your notebook. Every time we meet up I will record what we did and the emotional turnout. This is so I can keep track of everyone and not get girls mixed up with each other. When you leave this notebook will be yours as a token of your time here. You can request to see your notebook, but only your notebook, at any time and I will get it to you within 24 hours. I already have an entry in here about your application if you'd like to look it over. And just for shits and giggles..." He said finally taking a breath as he handed Anna the notebook to look through and pulled her application out of his folder holding it up so she could see it. "This is you? You sent this in, not a family member of yours? And all the information on here is correct? Because I would hate for you to be here against your will." He asked waiting for her answer before moving on, already having two girls say that it wasn't them that applied and one of the two wanting to go home as soon as possible as she already has a serious boyfriend. Aiden had no problem complying with that and the interview with her was over though they talked freely for a few minutes about her family before she was dismissed. It was just one less girl he had to worry about. "I have some questions for you, afterwards if you have any questions feel free to ask me. My first is why did you apply? Why put your life on hold for the chance to be Queen of Illea?"

Aiden waited for her full answer before moving on getting more tired by the second. "What do you think about our government? And what ideas do you have to change things for the better?" He again waited for her answer and then asked his last question "what is your favorite thing to do in your free time?" If anything he wanted the girls to be comfortable here. The way he saw it the more comfortable the girls were the more real they would be.

Finally he opened up the floor for Anna to ask any questions she had of him, once she had answered his last one of course.

Application

  • No significance in name
  • Cute but young
  • Minimal information to go off of
  • 7
  • Hopefully due to being in a lower caste Anna will have little experience with duplicity.
  • Little to no possibility of going all the way.

At last the doors opened and there he was finally prince Aiden. It seemed he was accompanied by a gaurd, Anna wondered if that was a common thing for him or if this was just because of the Selection. There wasn't time to stay in her own head though, she had to listen to him, for all she knew w the challenges would be starting right thing second. Who knew what was in those boxes the servants were carrying.

She listened carefully to his explanation of how things where going to go. The dinner didn't sound bad at all, treating this like a job interview would be interesting. Anna shrugged slightly at the mention of them being there for awhile, she was used to not eating much and she could wait for however long this was going to take. As the girls slowly began to almost hope that she was last it would give her a better chance to make an impression and stand out. Granted he would more than likely be hungry and bored towards the end, but if it was easy it wasn't worth doing.

Anna smile as the only other girl was called the prince. Last was most definitely not a bad thing in this particular situation and she was going to use it to her advantage. She waited patiently for the other girl to finish up. It was hard to remember all their names, and for the time being she didn't need to know them by name. But she would learn then as soon as she could. Finally he motioned for her to come over. It seemed she was right he was tired probably hungry and bored so she would do her best to be quick but memorable. Men it seemed got grumpy when they were hunger, well that's what her mother said anyway.

Anna walked over as calmly as she could the bees and butterflies in her stomach were back. She took a breath and sat down across from Aiden. It was obvious from his tone that this speech was rehearsed and this was the umpteenth time he'd given it. She made eye contact and smiled slightly when the journals where mentioned. It was a good idea to help him keep track of everyone, and a nice keepsake if you were into that sort of thing. She took it and flipped to his first entry and parts of it made her blush slightly no one had ever thought she was cute before. But then at the end well that annoyed her to no end he didn't even know her and he had already decided that she wasn't going to make it very far.

Luckily he was talking about her application now, so she couldn't give him a piece of her mind. Prince or not he had no right to judge her worth before he had a conversation with her. Anna was determined to prove him wrong now, she was going to be in the final two. She nodded, "Yes that's me, I sent it in, all the information is correct." She answered, "I'm here because I want to be."

She nodded and waited for him to ask, and reminded her self to take some time to think about her answers. Anna wasn't going to lie that was just asking for trouble down the line. "I applied so I could get closer to you. " She answered matter or factly, "The chance to become the queen is worth putting my life on hold, being the queen means you can change things for the better. I'd like to be able to make some changes someday."

He looked more tired now than he did before, that made her nervous. She had to give a good answer while keeping his interest. Luckily the question was a good one. "I think that there are some good things with the government but there are somethings that need to be changed. To make it better I'd get rid of the caste system, it causes more separation and resentment than anything else." She replied confident in her answer. Anna thought a bit longer about what she liked to do in her free time, as she didn't really have much. "I don't have much free time but I do like to go on walks whenever I get the chance be in nature it helps me relax and think." She replied softly and shrugged.

Anna smiled it was her turn to ask the questions she would do her best to keep them short, so he could eat and move around a bit. "Have you ever been to any other caste? What do you like to do in your spare time? Oh, and my last question is how can you think I have little to no possibility of going all the way when you haven't gotten to know me in person?" She curiously and handed the journal back to him. The last question may have seemed harsh but she wanted to know his thinking, and she was rather confident that not many other girls would have asked the question the same way she did.

Aiden couldn't have been more bored by the time he called up Anna. All the girls were giving him the same beauty pageant answers that meant absolutely nothing to him, he doubted most of them even understood what they were trying to say and how long it would take to change the things they suggested. Also only one other girl, a hot-headed two, said anything about what he wrote in the journal and she wasnt nearly as graceful about broaching the subject as Anna was. So much so that the guard that walked in with the prince tried to step in but Aiden waved him off. Aiden wasn't very impressed with any particular girl though each girl had her perks they all blended together.

And then there was Anna, very matter-o-fact, almost proud to be here; Anna. Almost. There were signs of nervousness as she approached but from Aiden's perspective she handled it well once she was seated and got to talking. And she didn't waste any time in sharing her plans for the future... Of course all plans would have to be approved by Aiden once king, but with the right pitch the prince might consider putting something in motion. Her idea about the caste system though might pose problems, but otherwise she seems nice.

Aiden simply nodded at the first answer, a little concerned about the phrasing. It almost sounded like she had an agenda. But he dismissed the notion quickly and got his next answer. "You do know that it took generations to build up the caste system, right? I can't play Robbin Hood. Countries don't work like that, it would take generations more to eradicate the castes. Not to mention that there is no humane way to stop the prejudices between the higher and lower castes, which more than likely is what the lower castes don't like. It's not a feasible task to accomplish in this lifetime. Don't get me wrong, I like your ambition, but I don't see it happening. It's the only thing keeping this country standing right now, especially with all these rebel attacks" he explained.

"We also have a garden but you'll need to take a guard out with you. We don't know when the next rebel rebel attack will happen and your protection is one of my biggest priorities." Aiden told her and then opened the floor for her questions. When he saw Anna's smile his face softened some, not many of the last few girls smiled during their 'interview' he figured they were as tired if not hungry as he was so he gave them a pass. "Well, I've only been outside the castle walls once and that was to visit another country... Considering we have our own Tarmac and jet I would have to say no. I've never formally seen any of the country. I assume pictures don't count..." He answered her truthfully. Though there was plenty to do in the castle he was a little put out that the most he's seen of his country were pictures.

The prince's spare time is an interesting concept though "what spare time I do have had to be scheduled, so I wouldn't exactly call it that... It's more of a break from the normal paperwork and political bull- business." He said catching himself before he cursed and then cleared his throat before answering "what I do in what passes for free time is... Well I guess I don't do much. I'm either in the garden or with my dogs." He said with a slight frown but quickly moved on to the next question "because I wrote that in everyone's notebook. I wanted to see how you would react. And I must say you were the most graceful in approaching the subject, though you could use some work... All in due time though." He said with a small grin. She would learn with the rest of the girls, the ones who aren't going home in the morning, how to at the very least pretend to be a proper lady.

And with that Aiden only had one more thing to do before announcing dinner.

Anna nodded, she was more than aware that the caste system wouldn't be erased over night, but that didn't mean she wouldn't do her best to get the ball rolling. She listened to his explanation and she could sort of see where he was coming from, and agreed on most points. Thus she simply smiled and nodded in agreement to most of what he explained. She couldn't hide the suprise when he said she'd have to take a gaurd with her to the garden, "If I have to I will." She said softly.

While she wanted change she knew that there was another rebel group that took things too far. She liked her group, they were doing things peacefully. Not attacking anyone or making threats, which only made things worse in her mind. Anna listened intently to his answer and shook her head, "No pictures don't count." It figured he would have been kept from the poverty that existed in the lower castes. She smiled softly as he stopped himself from cursing she'd heard worse living where she did, but it was nice that he stopped himself. Anna was shocked to hear that she had been the most graceful at handling the journal entry. "I'm sure I'll learn more, tact after spending time here." She replied, hoping tact was the right word, to late to take it back now. She was right the challenges where starting already, she'd have to stay on gaurd until she got sent home, after she made it to the final two at least.

Anna looked him over he seemed like a nice guy, and wasn't bad looking. He had manners, so maybe he would be the one to start to change things. She could only hope, and time would tell if those observations were correct. Anna smiled, "Is there anything else you wanted to talk about?"
