Today was like any other day when the daily news came on the tv that afternoon... But with one exception. Today the crowned prince Aiden would list off the girls he has chosen for his Selection out of the girls who applied for the competition for the prince's hand in marriage and eventually the position of Queen of Illea. As the news host rattled on about how The Selection was such a great thing and how it united the people with the royals Aiden stood just off camera, actually he was standing in front of his own camera with his father, the King standing somewhere in front of him though where he couldn't tell because of the blinding lights that were on him, waiting for his que to make a short introduction and emphasize how he was honored to invite the Selected girls into his home. Was it childish of him to not want to do this? To put all this stress on his shoulders to find his future wife, mother of his children and most importantly, future queen? Someone he would have to spend the rest of his life with in the span of a little less than a year? Somehow that didn't seem particularly fair to him.
Before he knew it Aiden's que had come and gone while he stood there on live television looking like an idiot. He could vaguely hear his father's distinct voice cursing under his breath before he came to, dragging himself from his worried thoughts and had the decency to look embarrassed before he stumbled over his words starting the small speech he had planned, his mind for a panicking moment going completely blank before he finally found the words he wanted. "M-my apologies. I suppose I was entranced about the prospect of meeting all the wonderful young ladies I am about to list, one of which will be my future queen one day." He started with a small embarrassed smile, which got some empathetic sounds from the ladies on the soundstage and some scoffs from the men. And despite his positive spin on the statement it was true... Just in a different light
As smooth as Aiden tried to be, his father knew exactly how the young man felt, he had been in the same position once after all. He just hoped his boy would be able to handle his stress better than this. After all it was part of the job description of being king.
Aiden went on to reiterate how it's an honor to be selected and how the families of the Selected ladies will be provided for while the girls were in the crown's care, as well as mentioning that all the girls that have been Selected but not chosen to be the one will be moved up the caste system to be twos, unless they decide to marry down of course. When he finally got to the list of girls, who's names and faces his father had him memorize, his hands started to shake. This was the beginning of the end for him. He would have to date 35 girls at once and from them choose his wife, the future queen of his kingdom. Of course he could call for a redo but that was bad form... Either way he'd never be a free man again. Not that he's actually been a man all that long.
He pushed his hands into his pockets to hide their shaking, not sure how much of him would be showing on everyone's tv screens, as he rattled of names being very careful with their pronunciations and picturing each girl as he named her. In everyone's homes the name and picture of each girl would be plastered somewhere on the screen next to him accompanied by the girl's caste. When he finally finished he had to take a deep breath to compose himself, he knew this year was going to be rough for him filled with women's hormones and jealously. He would be lucky to make it out unscathed. He ended his announcement by saying that a representative of the crown would come to pick each girl up in the morning and to only pack any necessary family memorabilia as an ample amount of dresses would be provided for them.
And with that his camera turned off and the news host started talking again. Aiden could finally breath easy, well, until tomorrow night at least when he would meet them all face to face.
