whatever it takes

Though they lived in a rather small town, rideshare cars were still available, though few and far between. Lucky for them, however, a van that would fit them, albeit tightly, was available. Aleksander clicked the 'Order' button, receiving a notification that the car would be there in just a few moments. With everything being rather compact in that town, it wasn't as if the car had to travel very far, regardless of where it was currently located. Locking the screen, he returned the phone to his pocket and stood form the table, holding out a hand for Clover to follow suit. She fluffed her hair, seeming to make sure everything was perfectly in its place. Very few got to see the cracks in Clover's perfect facade. As long as they had been dating, Aleks could count very few times he had been one of those few. But despite all the that they had been through, he still felt something for her. He wasn't sure that it was love per se, but he certainly cared about her.

It wasn't long before they were at the bonfire, and things were just getting started. People milled about with glass bottles and red plastic cups of who knows what. Some were already dancing to the bass beat of the music blasted from outdoor speakers. Others circled the beer pong table or keg stand. Even though the party began not long before, Aleks knew it wouldn't be long until bad choices were made, potentially including some of his own. Magicians under the influence could generally be a problem for a multitude of reasons. The use of powers without a sound mind was dangerous in and of itself. But that combined with the glitchy magic currently terrorizing the town? It was most certainly a recipe for disaster. What if someone witnessed them use magic? Or worse, caught it on the cell phone video cameras that always seemed to patrol those types of parties? The consequences could be disastrous, not only for their reputations but for the sanity of the town as well.

But, Aleks trusted himself and his friends enough that he knew their Circle could hold them together. At least, he certainly hope it could. They were all, with the minor exception of Monty, already a few drinks in, and there was certainly no looking back now. Maybe that was just his rash, slightly reckless nature. But whatever the case was, Aleksander didn't particularly mind. For now, he just wanted to watch that bonfire go up and smoke and experience another unforgettable night with his friends. So, as they traipsed up the hill towards the fire pit area, he couldn't help that his heart began to race in a bit of excitement. The match fell from Ricky's fingers into the barrel below. And that's when all hell broke loose. From the back of the crowd, Aleks wasn't quite sure what had happened or why. But the flames practically exploded into the air around the barrel, crawling down the sides in search of someone or something to consume. But almost as quickly as it came, it disintegrated into nothingness. Aleks glanced at Clover, confusion written on his face as he was completely oblivious to who had just been in the fire's path. "Was that you?"

Clover Lexington
Maybe leaving the small bar was for the best. Apparently, Clover was having the hardest time to contain her frustration over Harley’s return and it was strongly affecting her and her powers which were already out of control. Though it was questionable whether it was smart to move to the party where alcohol and even other substances were going to be available basically nonstop. But Phil’s was starting to feel too crowded and Clover was only too happy to slip her small hand into Alek’s as they were leaving. She felt hotness in her veins and covering her skin and for a moment, she was even afraid Alek might get burned. But since he never pulled his hand away, it was a good sign, elements were under control. For now.

The van arrived shortly and the whole group piled in. The car took them to Ricky’s house and it all seemed to take only a few moments. Clover sighed and considered a cigarette for a moment. But a red flag appeared in her head, warning her against trying to use any form of fire, especially now. Only god knew what could happen and she needed to be careful. The last thing she wanted was to hurt people she cared about deeply and who were still with her despite how big of a pain in the ass she could be.

Reaching Ricky’s king skull, Clo calmed down a little and leaned against Alek as Ricky spoke and launched the bonfire. But maybe it was too soon to feel relaxed because what happened next, Clover couldn’t exactly explain. And hell, she saw some shit already. Harley fell on the ground as someone shoved her and Clover watched in a sheer shock how fire was slowly making its way towards her. Maybe she and Harley weren’t the best of friends anymore but this was not what Clover wished her. Her heart was racing and her eyes went wide open until Monty stepped in and pulled Harley away.

Unable to comment on what just happened, Clover let out a deep breath, unaware she was holding it. And then Alek spoke to her, asking her if it was her. “What?” she asked but her tone was more frightened than snappy. “Wait…no. No, I swear.” she breathed. “I think…but no, that couldn’t have…” she panicked, looking at her shaking hands. “It wasn’t me.” she said and for the second time tonight, her sharp bitchy facade disappeared, replaced by the face of a scared girl. “What was that?”

Overthinking was not something Elliot usually did. He was more of a go with the flow type of person and now that everyone agreed to go to the bonfire, he was first to get up and pulled Kat nad Harley to him. If he thought for even a second, he would have let Monty have a girl as well but who was Elliot if not a player and a fuckboy? Plus, he knew Monty and his stuttering tongue, the young padawan still needed more training in approaching the ladies so El was a real buddy here and took care of them both, holding them by his sides with arms tightly wrapped around their shoulders. Kat teased him for partying too hard but he looked down at her and put that typical smirk of his on his face.

“Sweet Kat, when did that ever happen?” he drawled and moved his hand to her side, tickling her a little in response to her cheek poke. “But to make sure, I appoint you my personal company for tonight to make sure there are no blackouts indeed. Until you tuck me safely in bed, hm? Do we have a deal?” he winked and held the van door open for both girls. “Come on, get in. We have a party to get to!” he then hollered and climbed in right after them.

The group arrived just in time to see the homeboy light up the match, do his overbearing speech and drop the match onto the barrel. Yeah, yeah, same old, same old. Ricky never changed his antics and always was an obnoxious ass but his parties were legendary and Elliot wouldn’t miss them for the world. And yet, this one was about to become way more memorable as Harley fell on the ground and suddenly, flames danced in an all but natural way, moving towards the blonde.

Things were happening too fast and at first, Elliot’s eyes found Clover, thinking she was being her usual royal bitch. But seeing the utter shock in those baby blues, he had to give it to her, she was scared just as the rest of them. Elliot’s arm shot out and he pulled Kat closer, using his own body as a shield in case shit was going to go down. The flames looked like they meant business and he was not going to let anyone he cared about get hurt. Monty dove for Harley and soon, the flames were gone. Everyone else considered it a great show and they cheered but there was a small group of people who knew this was not Ricky’s trick. “You alright?” he looked at Kat when things calmed down and then his eyes found Harley. “What the fuck was that? Everyone good? No injuries?” he asked, sliding an inquisitive gaze across his friends. “Well? Who was it? Somebody’s got some new tricks up their sleeves we don’t know about? Or are we going to pretend it was just a coincidence?”

Harley lifted her head when she heard a familiar voice, Monty's voice. Her face was covered in dirt and her eyes had a slightly wild look in them, but for a moment she couldn't tear her gaze away from Monty's sympathetic, worried one. "Monty...?" Harley tore her gaze away from him, looking over at the fire that was now burning in the barrel where it was supposed to be. It was as if the rest of it hadn't even happened. There were no scorch marks on the ground, no sign that the fire had ever been coming towards her. But she'd seen it, she'd felt it and now nothing was making sense. "What happened?" She allowed the brunette male to help her to her feet, looking over when she heard Kat's voice as well, asking if she was alright. "Y-yeah. I just..." Kat turned her gaze to Monty, but Harley's eyes were on the glowing symbols on Kat's arm.

"Kat-" Harley started, but Elliot's words stopped her dead in her tracks. "What do you mean?" She asked him, looking around at their small group. "Are we going to pretend what was a coincidence?" She asked, her voice steadier this time, but also a little shaky. She knew she wasn't crazy, that fire had been coming right towards her. But looking at it now, you could never tell. Nobody else was even paying it any mind; it was as though the act had never happened. But she could still see the fire racing towards her in her mind, still feel the heat radiating off of it as it got closer and closer. She'd buried her face in the dirt and then it was gone, Monty was helping her up and now they were all standing here and Elliot was talking about someone having new tricks up their sleeves. Confused was simply an understatement.

Looking down at herself, Harley brushed some dirt off of her clothes, lifting her hands to try and get the dirt off of her face as well. There was a slight tremor to her hands, the aftereffects of what had happened that she was doing her best to ignore. Running her fingers through her hair, she loosened some dirt particles out of there as well, along with a stick or two. "Jesus." Dropping everything to the ground and brushing her hands off on each other, she looked around at everyone again. Monty looked uncomfortable, and Harley zeroed in one him. "Monty." He jumped slightly when he heard his name, his face paling some as he looked in her direction. "What the hell is going on here?" She asked him directly, but he just seemed to be at a loss for words. "Fine. What about you two, Romeo and Juliet?" She turned her attention to Clover and Alek. "Kat? Elliot? Somebody better start talking."

Their magic had been running amok for quite some time now, but the return of Harley, their old friend, was enough to make Monty think that maybe things could be normal. Or that maybe they could pretend their magic wasn't running rampent after all, that everything was normal after all. But the whole thing with the fire trying to attack Harley told Monty that that wasn't the case after all. Whatever this was between the five of them, Harley made six. She was a part of this just as the rest of them were, whether she knew it or not. Monty still didn't quite understand what had happened, but his brain was working overtime to try and put the pieces together. After he helped Harley back onto her feet, Kat appeared by their side as well, and Monty saw her hand hovering over the runes on her arm. He wasn't the only one who saw, either, but the arrival of everyone else and Elliot's big mouth put a stop to whatever Harley had been about to say to Kat.

When Elliot's words registered in Monty's mind, the nerd turned a panicked look onto his friend. He hoped that Harley wouldn't pick up on what Elliot had said, but that was definitely not the case. Same with the rest of them, she was quick as a whip, and she wanted to know what was going on. Monty glanced her way, watching for a moment as she brushed dirt off of her clothes, face and hair. When she finished he quickly dropped his gaze, but it was his name that she called first. Monty paled, looking back up at his friend as she point blank asked him what was going on. Although his mouth opened to respond, no words came out, and Harley moved onto Alek and Clover, then Kat and Elliot. Somehow, from someone, she wanted answers but Monty didn't think this was the time or place to give them.

"Uh, guys..." Monty glanced around at the party going on in full swing around them. People were drinking, dancing, singing at the top of their lungs and already trying to jump over the fire. Turning back to the others, Monty looked between them. "We should go." He nodded towards the road where they'd come from when the car had dropped them off. "This isn't... We can't..." He fumbled over his words, trying to pull himself together to make sense of what he was trying to say. "Can we go somewhere more private?" He finally managed to get out, his eyes landing on his friends one by one, trying to silently plead with them to listen to him. If they stayed here, the magic was only going to get worse and more uncontrollable, and who knew what else could happen or go wrong tonight that they didn't need. "Guys? Please?"

Even the minor beginnings of using her magic made Katarina feel uncomfortable. What used to feel like pure sunlight and energy flowing through her veins had become dull and lethargic, like a Dementor sucking the life out of her. When she discovered how to control her rune magic, it made her feel amazing. For the first time in a long time, she had felt alive, like she had control over what happened as well as her fate. It connected her directly with the world around her, letting her feel the invisible threads connecting the universe. It was as if she had been blind her entire life and for the first time could see. But all that had disappeared when whatever was cursing the town arose. Any sort of magic use could have unpredictable consequences and a single misstep could be dire. For Kat, her runes not only could make mistakes, but they could also drain her life force, possibly entirely. And Katarina didn't want to take that chance. So, with the knowledge that Harley was unscathed, her hands fell back to her side and the golden light faded, though it left behind a mild headache that caused her to wince ever so slightly.

"Yeah, I'm good, thanks," the brunette murmured in response to Elliot's question, though she threw back the rest of the alcoholic drink in her hand in the hopes of dulling the ache behind her eyes. She could hear the anger and surprise in her friend's voice, and it hadn't even occurred to her that they might be revealing their secret to Harley. In Kat's opinion, Harley had always felt like part of the group, even if she did disappear for a while. "As far as I know, it wasn't me. I haven't activated anything in a while," she responded, turning her turquoise blue gaze to the rest of the group. Clover was the most likely suspect, but the look on her face combined with the fact that Kat knew she was good deep down supported her innocence. Aleks still looked confused as to what had happened in the first place. And based on Elliot and Monty's actions in response to the whole fiasco, they were innocent as well. So that meant either a magical stranger had rolled through town, or...

Almost as soon as Harley spoke Monty's name, the pieces fell into place in Katarina's mind. Whether she knew it or not, had experienced magic or been kept in the dark, somehow Harley had powers of her own. And whatever that fire was had been was one of them. If that was the case, then maybe she was the key to everything, to finally ending the reign of terror magic had been wreaking on the town. She deserved answers. Kat could hear the uncertainty in Monty's tone, knowing that being put on the spot was probably hell for him. She shot him an apologetic look, the alcohol thankfully beginning to dull the thud in her brain. When he had originally shared the prophecy he had found with her, Kat had been a bit skeptical. But magic began to wreck through the town, and she could no longer ignore that there might be something true to those old words. If this was it, if Harley was their missing piece, then it could be the cure to everything. But what if she wasn't ready, what if none of them were? Those anxious thoughts flitted around in the back of her mind, nagging her to pay attention to them. Unfortunately, only time could tell. "We should head to the library."

Despite the large flames that had just curled over the tops of the barrel to the ground beneath, there were no ash or scorch marks left behind, no smell of smoke in the air. It was as if the flames hadn't existed at all, like they were just a hallucination that everyone seemed to have experienced at once. Like a folie à deux. But as the crowd parted, Aleks recognized the brunette Monty was pulling to her feet, having just been directly in the path of a strange fiery demise. A strange feeling of anger washed over him, causing him to clench his free hand as he turned his attention back to the dark-haired woman beside him. Given all they had been through, Aleks was fairly certain he knew Clover pretty well. Underneath the superficial facade of a spoiled and entitled rich woman, she was confident and determined and sometimes even a bit insecure at times. He had seen what he thought was every side of her. And so, it was a bit of a shock when he momentarily thought the fires had been her magic at play. Sure, he and Harley had once been close friends. But, she could never come between what he and Clover had. At least, that's what he told himself.

But Clover's tone revealed her true emotion: afraid of what had just happened, or maybe that she could potentially be accused of something she didn't do. The Clover he knew would be confident in her actions, take responsibility for them if she truly meant to commit them. So, either she hadn't been trying to hurt their returned acquaintance, or it wasn't her to begin with. She panicked looking down at her hands as if she might even be questioning herself. But, despite how badly uncontrolled magic might be in their town, she would have still felt it flowing through her as those flames came down. They could all feel the magic in their veins, even if it didn't always obey their silent orders. "Alright, I believe you," Aleks responded, pulling her tighter into his side in what he hoped was a comforting one-armed hug. Elliot seemed less than convinced, throwing around accusations of new tricks like one of their friend group would willingly try to hurt someone else. The redheaded man surely didn't know everything about the pasts of his close friends. But he honestly believed that they were good people with good intentions. "Coincidence, probably not. But possibly a mistake? Or maybe someone else, outside of us?"

It was then that Aleksander took a moment to look at his childhood friend, immediately realizing by the look on her face that she was just as surprised as the rest of them. But there was something more there, something like she had begun to realize that fire wasn't a fluke, that she wasn't just lucky or in the wrong place at the wrong time. She looked around at their small group again, seemingly steadier despite the slight tremor in her hands as she dusted herself off. While he didn't appreciate the 'Romeo and Juliet' jab and his eyes narrowed accordingly, Aleks couldn't blame her for wanting answers. Hell, he did too. Monty's soft words pulled him from his thoughts, releasing a breath he didn't realize he had been holding. They were at a party, where could they possibly go that was more private. But Kat's voice easily answered, and he couldn't help the incredulous look that appeared on his face."You can't be serious," the words fell from his mouth before he could stop them. "She's not one of us. She wouldn't even be able to get in, and--" Something in the severity of Kat'sblue gaze stopped him mid-sentence, sending a shiver down his spine. The quiet runemaster was generally friendly. But she could certainly be intimidating when she wanted to be. Running a hand through his hair, Aleks simply said, "Fine, I'll call another car."

Clover Lexington

It fucking figured that Clover was going to be the one accused of the impromptu fire show. Not that she could blame them, it totally looked like one of her tricks. Also, it was a trick against Harley which was also Clover’s disadvantage, considering the hostility between two girls was obvious and unmissable. And yet, Clo was looking at her hands in disbelief, wondering whether it really was her and her magic came so wild that Clover didn’t even feel it anymore. Was it really flowing freely from her now? It was natural that all eyes were on her but in her shock, Clover couldn’t even muster enough snark to send them all to hell. She just weakly defended herself and leaned into Aleks as he pulled her closer, saying he believed her. “If it was me, you all would know.” she mumbled, pretty confident that even if her magic was faulty, she would be able to create a spell that was going to be far more impressive than this wannabe magic.

Maybe they should have moved on, grabbed a drink and enjoyed the party with everyone around them. Maybe they should have just ignored the mishap and forgotten about it. And maybe it would have happened but then Elliot opened his big fat mouth, not paying attention to his words and stuff was spilling out before he knew it. Clover didn’t hold Harley in high regards now but she knew her former best friend was not an idiot. And as a confirmation, Harley spoke up and demanded to know what was happening. No one seemed to be too eager to answer and after all, what was there to say? Sorry, Harley, but while you were gone, we all discovered our magic power and formed an after-school club? But you were not here so sorry, you’re out? Clover could imagine that it could go very smoothly.

Kat then suggested going back to the library and Clo flashed her a look. Aleks spoke first and he spoke for probably everyone. “He’s right. She’ll never get past the door.” Clover joined in and looked at Harley, all concerned. The blonde threw an implication of Romeo and Juliet at her and Aleks but Clo ignored it. Safety of everyone was what was the most important now. But Alkes then gave up and requested another ride. Clover couldn’t get rid of the feeling that things were not going to be the same ever again. Especially if they decided to reveal their secret to Harley. The small group slowly walked away from the loud noises at the party and Clover’s small hand kept squeezing Alek’s. “This is not gonna end up well…” she sighed. “How do we know she won’t tell anyone?”

Elliot was known for his fast mouth and for yapping all the time. It was no surprise that after everYthing went down, it was his big mouth that spilled the beans. To his defense, though, he was concerned and shocked, he was not thinking straight and those words simply left his lips before he realized Harley was not in their little magic parlor group. His arm remained around Kat from when he tried to protect her from whatever danger might have been threatening them and Elliot never took it away so he simply held the petite witch while everyone kept talking. His eyes were scanning everyone in the group as he was wracking his brain, trying to figure out who managed to do this. It was not him, he was sure. If his magic misfired, Halloween would become way scarier, with the possibility of real skeletons walking the streets.

His first guess was Clover. She was not okay with Harley being back and elements were her specialty. It was definitely a petty enough thing for the young heiress to do but she defended herself and the others believed her so El dropped it as well. Maybe Kat and her runes? But he saw no reason for the gentlest of the girls to do something like that, even coincidentally. This was a real entangled enigma and the answers were nowhere near for them to see, which only made Elliot angrier. He craved a smoke but manipulating with any kind of fire just seemed like an unnecessary hazzard at this point. And then Kat dropped the library bomb which immediately raised the discussion with Harley in the middle of it, wanting to know what was happening. Aleks and Clover were right, though. Harley didn’t have a chance to get to the library. But it seemed that was where everyone was going so Elliot just sighed and once the car appeared, he climbed in again.

Inside of the car felt even more suffocating. There was nowhere to run, nowhere to hide and he knew that if he was in Harley’s place, he would press for answers even more. His fingers toyed with the zipper of his leather jacket and he kept chewing on his lower lip to try and suppress the need to smoke. “So much for joyful homecoming, eh, doll?” he smirked at Harley, trying to make the mood lighter. Not that it helped, the atmosphere was pretty gloomy the whole car ride until it stopped in front of the library. “Thanks, man.” El mumbled at the driver as they all piled out of the car and he looked at the old building of the local library. The moment of truth was approaching. Patting Monty’s back, he nodded at the nerd. “Lead the way, little dude.”

Maybe the Romeo and Juliet comment was uncalled for, but it would be a lie for Harley to say she wasn't freaking out a little bit. The idea of the party had been an excellent one, one that Harley had been excited for. A night out at a bonfire with her friends that she'd missed dearly? Absolutely. But the fire coming towards her hadn't been something she'd dreamed, or a figment of her imagination. She knew that it had been real-- or as real as it could be. It was completely gone now, almost as though it hadn't been real, and the other partygoers didn't seem to think of it as anything more than a party trick. But her friends were acting like it was more than that, and Harley wanted answers. Monty suggested they go somewhere more private, and for a moment, no one said anything.

But before she could start demanding answers yet again, Kat suggested they go to the library. "The library?" Harley scoffed, looking between them. Surprise filled her when she saw the looks on a few of their faces, and heard Alek say she wouldn't be able to get in. "To the library?" She repeated, but it was almost as though she wasn't even speaking. Clover seemed to agree with him, but Alek caved and said he'd get a car. Disbelief was written all over Harley's face as they made their way back down to where the car would find them, climbing in once it arrived. Elliot was the only one who said anything, and Harley just looked at him. "The joyfulest." She muttered, looking at the others, wishing someone would say something relevant. It didn't happen, and the silence continued until they arrived at the library and got out.

Elliot told Monty to lead the way, but he didn't head towards the front doors. "This place looked closed." Harley commented, looking at the dark windows of the building. But she still followed the group around to the back of the building, where there was an old storm door that looked like it hadn't been touched in years. "Guys?" She stopped a few feet away from the door, half expecting someone to turn to her and tell her this was all some sort of joke. But Monty just looked at her, silent before he moved to the door, unlocking the combination lock and moving the chains away from the handles. He struggled for a moment with the door before he got it open, the hallway inside just as dark as the building had been. "This isn't funny." Harley commented, pausing when everyone looked at her. "What? Fine, you want me to go in?" Feeling suddenly angry, she moved past Monty and into the dark hallway. Turning around to face the others, Harley held up her hands. "See? I got into your little secret hiding spot. Happy now?"

After some pleading on his part, Kat finally suggested that they go to the library. Alek and Clover looked shocked at her suggestion, both of them claiming that Harley wouldn't even be able to get in. Sliding his gaze over to Harley, though, Monty wasn't so sure that was the case. When they'd found the backdoor to the library that led down into the basement, they hadn't known at first that non-magic users couldn't get in. They'd discovered that fact by accident when they asked a librarian about the door and the basement, and she'd looked at them like they were crazy. "Nobody goes in there." She'd told them, sliding her glasses up her nose. "The door wont open." And from there, they'd found some books in the basement that had told them pretty much all they needed to know. It was... strange.

Alek finally said he'd order a car, and the group headed down to meet it. The ride to the library was awkwardly silent, and Monty shifted continuously in his seat, wishing he could think of something to say that wouldn't make things worse. Arriving at the library, Elliot thanked the driver and they all piled out. Nodding slightly at Elliot's instruction, Monty started around the back of the library, biting down on the inside of his cheek as Harley kept trying to get someone to say something. They reached the door around back and he fumbled with the lock, finally snapping it off the chains and moving them aside. The door always stuck, and he hated it. "Stupid door." He muttered, finally managing to get it open. He glanced at the others over his shoulder, but ultimately, his eyes landed on Harley.

"This isn't funny." She said, causing Monty to grimace. He looked over at the others, wishing someone would say something. But it was Harley who broke the silence, growing angry as she threw up her hands. She waltzed into the dark hallway with no issues, then turned around to face them. "See? I got into your little secret hiding spot. Happy now?" Monty had suspected she would be able to go in, but seeing it was another thing entirely. He stared at her for a moment before he finally grew tired of the silence. Stepping into the hallway as well, he offered his friend a small smile before he reached out and awkwardly placed a hand on her shoulder. "Harley is one of us." He told the rest of them, though his eyes never left Harley. "Harley... you're a witch."

For many, when they hear the word 'library,' they think of a room full of shelves and books, each labeled with a specific number and placed in its genre-specific section. It was a quiet place to study, to learn, to delve into a new world you never thought you could visit before. There were tables and chairs made of oak wood to sit at. Or, if you were lucky, you could find a spot in a soft armchair or even a bean bag chair in the warm sun coming through the windows. There were always the occasional chatterers, those that didn't understand the beauty of a library was in its strong silence. It was a place where people didn't need to communicate with one another to know they were similar. If you didn't know what you were looking for, whether it be a source for a paper or just your next novel to delve into, the intelligent and polite librarians would be more than happy to show you the way. It was a magical place, one that Katarina spent a lot of time in as a child and even into her adult years. But all those years ago, when she sat curled up with a book in some far corner of the library, could she ever have imagined what was lurking beneath it.

Still, underneath Elliot's arm, the brunette witch stayed rather quiet following her comment about heading to the library. She knew it would cause some turmoil. After all, it was their place and no one else's. It was their home away from home, a place where they all felt like they belonged and were normal. It was where she and Monty could read and study, whether Elliot, Clover, and Aleks could practice their skills, all safely within those four walls. The Circle was important to them and, unfortunately, that meant protecting it from outsiders. Even Harley. That being said, Katarina had a sinking suspicion that Harley wasn't as mundane as they thought she was. Monty's look had confirmed it. Assuming that one of their own group hadn't made that fire move, it had to be from an outsider. So, unless a new face in town was trying to play a terrible trick on them, it had to be Harley. That, and the magic itself seemed new, untapped and untamed. It only made sense that it would be their long-lost friend, returned to Ashbourough only to have her powers awakened.

As they piled out of the storm door, Kat could feel a buzzing crawling along the runes inked into her skin. Her magic knew where they were, and wanted closer. She carefully followed Monty to the old storm door, staring at it for a moment as he yanked the chains away before turning her turquoise blue eyes towards Harley. The brunette could tell by her returned friend's voice that she was annoyed. She wanted an explanation. But what explanation could Kat give? Honestly, not one until she knew for sure if Harley was a witch or not. Harley waltzed right into the dark hallway of the library, and Kat found herself instinctively stepping closer to Elliot in surprise, finding a bit of comfort in being near him. "Harley is one of us," Monty said, stepping into the hallway with her, before finally uttering those three words. "You're a witch." Excitement filled her body, setting her heart racing. "This is so amazing!" Katarina announced, almost skipping as she too entered the hallway, taking a few steps past Harley and Monty.

Raising her hand, one of the runes tattooed into her forearm began to glow. She held her palm to the wall, where an identical symbol also glinted in magical radiance. And with that, the entire place came alight. In a strange succession, like something out of a Harry Potter movie, the candles perched in chandeliers and sconces were set ablaze, illuminating the rest of the the room. The floor was made of tile, while the walls were lined with old oak bookcases filled to the brim with books. Cobwebs and dust littered certain areas that were mostly unused while others were completely clean. A large brick fire place was at the far side of the room, also now set aflame alongside the candles. The spiral staircase led up to a second floor that was half a replicate of the first, and half a training space for them to practice their magic. Though, that part had gone largely unused since things had gotten largely uncontrollable. Just the use of her fire rune alone had given her a headache. Katarina walked into the open space, spinning to lean against one of the oak tables and face her friends. "Welcome to the Library, Harley!"

As much as Aleksander trusted her friends and the rest of the Circle, he wasn't quite sure letting an outsider in just because they witnessed magic was a good idea. She had no magic of her own, didn't know what all they had done or could do. What if she turned around and told people? Blamed them for all the misdoings that had happened in town, and the others ran them out? Would the rest of the town even believe them? Someone would. Hell, if his father knew about magic without growing up in Ashborough, it was only logical that other people knew about it and had magic too. While he had yet to meet anyone else outside of their Circle with magic in town, there was a strong possibility that there were others. And if one of those others happened to be Harley in the slight probability, then he would lament and understand that he was wrong. But until that point, Aleks wound protect his friend, his family, and himself.

At least he had Clover who supported him, squeezing his hand as they walked together towards the car he had hailed. "I don't think it will either," he agreed quietly, low enough that the four in front of them probably couldn't hear. The nostalgic part of him wanted to believe that the Harley he knew as a child wouldn't blatantly turn her friends in, even if magic were suddenly real in her world. But she had disappeared for years, no communication at all. And so, he wasn't sure he knew her anymore, let alone trust her with his greatest secret. "Honestly, I don't know. I mean, it is Harley. But also, no one has heard from her in so long that she could be an entirely different person now. Whatever the case, we were outvoted. So I guess if the worst happens, it will be on them," the redhead continued, leaning over to place a light kiss against Clover's temple before catching up with the other four.

The car took them to the town library, a majestic and modern building that housed the biggest collection of books in town. Aleks had never really been the library type of guy. When it came to basic school stuff like math and science, he wasn't the smartest guy in the world. Plus the whole need to be silent thing didn't really fit well with his personality. What he lacked in booksmarts, though, he made up in common sense, brawn, and athleticism. that being said, he could appreciate what the building of knowledge stood for, and even more so what lie beneath it. Monty, being erudite as he was, led them around to the storm door entrance. Aleks moved to help his friend open the door. But by the time he had, the chains were already removed. "Trust me, it's not funny for any of us," he muttered, hearing Harley's exasperated words. She moved towards the entrance, and he braced himself, half-expecting something bad to happen. But, much to his surprise, Harley waltzed right in like she owned the place. Light brown eyes wide, he quietly said, "Well, I'll be damned."

For a moment, Aleksander couldn't help but feel elated. All those years ago, he and Harley had been two peas in a pod. Best friends, partners and crime, and all that. He had lost something when she left. Maybe a part of himself? Whatever it was, the thought that she would join their group, potentially be a part of the Circle, made him happy. For a brief moment anyway, until he remembered how betrayed he had felt, still felt. How he had Clover, Monty, Elliot, and Kat now, close friends that he trusted with his life for the most part. "She has some sort of magic," Aleksander said matter-of-factly, walking past them into the Library as Katarina had done. He glanced around absentmindedly, watching the candles light from her runes. Finally, he looked back at Monty. "But that doesn't necessarily explain the fire back at the party. That wasn't the same thing as Clover's elemental magic, and it didn't seem like something from Kat's runes either. So what exactly was that?"

Clover Lexington

It definitely seemed that it was only Clover and Alkes who were rather against taking Harley to the library. Clo was still very much bitter and hated the fact that her best friend would just disappear one day, not telling her a word. Clover considered Harley the best person in her life and the blonde knew all the secrets young Clover had to hide. To the Brit, it was almost like a pact. A pact Herly broke when she vanished into thin air, going on to chase her own dreams, never bothering to grab her phone and call. Clover wasn’t jealous of her career, pfft, as if! She had a career on her own waiting for her to pick up when her father decided to retire anyway. What she hated though was that Harley actually had the guts and went for it, leaving Clover in Ashborough, basically all alone. At least that was how the brunette saw it at first. Now she had Kat, she had Aleks, she had her small Circle. Who needed Harley anyway?

The real surprise came when Monty took the chains off of the door and they all walked in. All of them. All as in, Harley walked in as well. Clover’s jaw positively dropped. “How…?” she whispered but didn’t wait for an answer before walking inside their little sanctuary. This place had been their hideout for quite some time. Before, Clover only studied her grandmother’s old grimoire at home and tried a spell or two before her elemental powers fully unlocked. It was only her and… Well, her and AJ. Her twin brother whose name was still leaving a bitter aftertaste on her tongue whenever she uttered it. But it was him who pulled her into the world of magic and spells only to leave her there hanging while he fled away, leaving the family and most of all, Clover all alone. Yet another person abandoning her. No one could wonder why Clover was the way she was. At least partially.

“How long have you known about this?” Clo asked Harley, hopping up on a sturdy oak table. Her legs, clad in thigh-high suede boots, dangled in the air as she gave the blonde a long scanning curious look. “Is this what brought you back? Your magic?” she pressed on and opened her purse to fish out a pack of long thin menthol Marlboros. One of them ended in between her lips, leaving a dark lipstick imprint on the filter. “So what can you do, darling? We already saw your fire.” she smirked and lit up her own hand, knowing she was risking a lot. She already felt her veins burn and not in that pleasant way she was used to. Yet, her cocky nature didn’t allow her to stop her show and she lit up a cigarette with her own flames before attempting to put it out. It took more to do so than she anticipated and in the end, once the flames were finally gone, she felt her energy level drop to minimum, leaving her slightly breathless. And yet, she still stared at Harley, expecting answers.

Elliot belonged to the part of the group that was actually okay with Harley going with them. Partially. And maybe he was just a group of one. But it just didn’t seem alright to abandon her just because they had formed the Circle now. One way or another, Harley was their friend, or at least used to be, and they all should try their best to welcome her back home. And yet, not everyone seemed to get the memo. El was the kind of a guy who would always walk an extra mile for a friend and he was willing to scold everyone who doubted Harley but a small part of him knew they should just wait and see if Harley was able to walk inside. They could always go from there.

The cab brought them to the library and El told Monty to lead the way. It was apparent the nerd was slightly nervous but after fidgeting with the chains for a while, he managed to open the door and let them all in. Elliot hurried outside but soon turned around and watched in awe as Harley walked inside without the smallest problems. Immediately, his lips turned into a mischievous grin and he knew that everyone who doubted her could just…well, quite frankly, El didn’t care. His friend was in and obviously, she was a witch too. And if you asked him, it only figured, They all possessed a set of powers. Naturally, Harley had to have some too. In Elliot’s logic, it couldn’t have been any other way. And as if to confirm his thoughts, Monty announced that to her as well. She was a witch indeed.

The whole group stepped into the main room, filled with old books and all kinds of items and Kat proceeded to put the lights on. It was a risky move, every time they used their magic was risky. But sometimes it could be worth it. Clover was next to show off with flames licking her hand and El knew it had to be draining. But the girl also accompanied it with a set of mean words and Elliot wondered what was more tiring. Her magic or being a royal bitch all the time. Though El decided it was not worth it to argue with the brunette. Instead, he turned to Harley with a wide smile. “Welcome to the Circle, Jade.” he announced theatrically and opened his arms in a welcoming gesture. “Make yourself at home and just ignore the bitch talk. You’re one of us now. Or so the library says.”

The longer Harley spent without getting answers, the angrier she was getting. She was positively heated by the time they reached the library, and once Monty got the chains off the door and the door itself opened, she walked in without a second thought. Spinning around to face the others, she couldn't help her snappy words, seeing surprise on more than one face. Scoffing, she looked over at Monty, as he was the first to approach. He seemed hesitant, but then placed a hand on her shoulder. His words floored her, and her anger immediately gave way to surprise, her eyes flying wide. "What did you say?" She asked him, but it was Kat who spoke next. She, for one, seemed way more excited about the prospect of Harley being "one of them" than, say, Clover and Alek. But still, Harley only grew more confused.

The others stepped in as well, and with the hallway getting crowded, they made their way into the bigger room. The glowing runes on Kat's arms caught Harley's eye, and she whipped her head in that direction, her eyes going wide again as the lights in the room came up. Alek brought up what had happened at the party, with the whole fire thing, and the scene replayed in Harley's mind. She had no idea what it was; why was he asking her? Or maybe he was asking the entire room, but nobody seemed to have a concrete answer. She was so lost in her thoughts that she missed Clover walking past her, though her words were hard to ignore. Harley turned to look at the girl, perfectly poised on top of an oak table, her eyes directly on Harley. "Known about what?" Harley asked, her tone clipped.

Clover pressed on, asking if her magic was what brought Harley back. "My-" Her words cut off as Clover pulled out a cigarette, lighting it with a fire she conjured with her hand. Harley could only watch, fascinated by the second-- or third, if you counted the fire back at the party-- display of magic right before her very eyes. When Elliot spoke, Harley turned her head to look at him, feeling some of her own anger ebb away at his welcoming words and gesture. Despite herself, one corner of her lips quirked up in a smirk. "Ignoring the bitch talk is no problem." She shot a look at Clover before she turned to look back at the others. "So. Magic." She didn't really know how to broach this subject, as it was never one she'd even thought would come up. "And you're not fucking with me right now?"

The surprise that flooded Monty when Harley was able to walk into the library didn't last long. Somewhere inside, he'd already known that she was a part of the circle. It just made sense, especially considering the information he and Kat had found out. They needed to complete the circle, and Harley just made sense. Maybe now they could figure out a way to calm the magic wreaking havoc in the town. Things had been escalating lately, but according to the prophecy he'd found and shared with the others, a complete circle would calm the magic. He was ready for that, because not being in control was something that Monty didn't do well with. It's why he didn't drink, why he didn't do drugs or party hard with the other kids his age. He needed to be in control, especially of his own body. And his own magic.

Everyone walked into the library, and Kat used her runes to light the place. A small smile appeared on his face, though it disappeared when he heard Clover's bitchy words. Turning back to face the others, he tensed, not wanting this to lead into an all out cat fight. Thankfully, Elliot broke the tension between the two girls, though it was clear afterwards that Harley wasn't letting it go completely. Swallowing heavily, Monty sank down into an overstuffed chair, his eyes darting between everyone. But then Harley spoke again, and Monty perked up. "No, we're not!" He assured her, jumping out of the seat as if it had shocked him. It hadn't, of course, but he'd gotten an idea. "Come here, Harley." He moved to the same table Clo was perched on, but past her, to where the book with the prophecy lay.

Opening to the correct page, Monty stepped aside, nodding towards it. "Just read, Harley." He told her, watching her carefully as she moved closer to the book to read. The room was silent for a few moments until she finished and straightened. "See? With you here, Harley, you complete the circle. Whatever happened at the party was you. All you. Has anything like it happened before?" He seemed excited at the prospect, his shoulders slumping some when she shook her head. "Maybe you needed to be here to activate it." He pondered out loud, glancing at the others to see if anyone else thought the same. "Or maybe you just... didn't realize..." He trailed off, getting lost in his own thoughts again. He placed his hand on the table, accidentally brushing against Clover's behind as he did so. Now he jumped again, yanking his hand back as his face turned cherry red. "Sorry, Clover." He mumbled, quickly moving back to his chair.

After the Circle was formed and their little group found the Library hidden beneath the town library, it had largely become a second home to Katarina. Or maybe a third home considering how much time she spent at local art galleries. With her family entirely gone, home had become a place that could get incredibly lonely. And despite her close-knit group of friends that she truly loved and cared about, it was hard for Kat not to feel alone at times. But in the Library, she was surrounded by so much history, so many stories and art pieces and voices that it was hard to feel along. And so, she spent a lot of her free time there, reading and studying and creating to her heart's content. Some nights, she even stayed there so late that she fell asleep hidden away in the stacks of books, head pressed against the pages as she leaned on the table. Some might think of it as sad. But it kept the demons floating around in the back of her mind at bay, and that was enough for her.

The rest of her friends entered the library, even Harley who still seemed confused about the entire thing. With the ignition of the lights, she could feel some of her energy melt away from her body. But it wasn't enough to warrant worry, at least not with the news that her childhood friend was back and magical as well. Clover hopped up next to her on the oak table, and Kat turned her turquoise blue eyes back to Harley in excitement. "Oh yes! I'd love to know when you found out! What are your powers? We each have our own specialties in one way or another. I prefer runes to center my magic like these," she said, pulling up the sleeve of her peasant blouse to reveal the markings permanently inked there, a representation of Elliot's handiwork with his medium of choice. She chose to ignore the snappy comments between Harley, Aleks, Clover, and Elliot, instead just happy that their little group was back together and bonded more than they ever had been before.

Katarina watched as Monty took a seat in an oversized chair, immediately jumping out when Harley questioned them all about the truth in his words. "Not at all. We've known for quite some time now but didn't realize our Circle was incomplete until recently. When Monty and I found the prophecy," she answered, moving to take a seat in the oversized armchair Monty had abandoned to let them see the old book. It was old and bound in leather. She had pored over it for hours on end in an attempt to understand the prophecy, to try and help cure whatever curse had overtaken them and the town. "I remember reading in a book somewhere around here that this town was built on some sort of magic reservoir. So it's largely possible that returning here ignited the magic in her that she was too young to possess when she left," Katarina said to Monty, crossing one leg over the other. "Either way, if she's here, that means we can finally break this stupid curse that's throwing our powers out of whack. How do we do that?"

While Aleksander didn't spend as much time among the bookshelves and references as a few of his friends did, he did love the Library for the other amenities it had to offer. When they first found the Library, it was covered in dust and cobwebs like it hadn't been accessed for several years. In reality, it probably hadn't. The large oak furniture had been there, but other things were new. Aleks remembered spending several late nights and even weekends cleaning up the library, doing a lot of the heavy lifting while the brains of the group, Kat and Monty, went through the books and paperwork for more information. Eventually, the place looked brand new, even fitted with new training equipment that they could use to hone their powers. That was where the redhead spent a lot of his time. Not only was it a free gym that he didn't have to worry about training other people in, but it was also a way for him to understand his transmutation better. To hone his skills and maybe avoid another catastrophic failure in the future. He even helped train the others. That is until magic began to run haywire.

Aleksander walked over to where Clover sat, cigarette between her lips. He hated the things, the smell wasn't that great and they were bad for her health. But he knew better than to try and argue with her about them. It had caused many a fight in the past, and he didn't need to reiterate that cycle. Instead, he leaned in to press a light kiss again on the side of her temple before meandering back towards the fireplace with his hands in his pockets. Just being in the Library caused an unexplainable tingle through his body, like electricity crawling across his skin that had no discernible source. The magic of the place drew those that could feel it in, made them feel at home, like they belonged. Aleks kept his mouth shut at the bantering between Harley and Clover. He didn't want to take sides, feeling a pull towards both. Clover was his girlfriend, had been for a long time, and he truly did have feelings for her. But Harley was his childhood best friend, and despite his anger towards her, there were still feelings there.

"Hey now, man. Let's not say that." Aleks was pulled from his thoughts by Elliot's words, furrowing his brow at his friend. He knew there weren't many nice feelings between El and Clover. But they could at least try to be civil. All of them. Running a hand through his red hair, he noticed Monty's accidentally groping and chose to ignore it, though a slight smirk played on his lips. Despite the shy brunette's obvious crush on his girlfriend, Aleks didn't feel threatened. In fact, he knew Clover rather liked the attention, and it took a bit of the pressure off of him. Monty was too nervous, and he couldn't help but think that the Clover he knew would crush the poor guy like a bug were they were to interact beyond a one-sided friendship. Pulled from his thoughts by Kat's words, Aleksander tilted his head curiously. "You mean you two don't know? Isn't there some kind of ceremony or ritual in those books of yours that we can follow?"

Clover Lexington

One might ask what Clover was doing here. Meaning, what was her contribution to this whole place? Sure, she had her magic and so naturally, she was allowed to enter. But back when they found this place, it needed a lot of work to look the way it did now. It used to be a dirty dust-filled hole and Clover did not look like someone to enjoy a good old-fashioned sweeping and mopping. And no cleaning service could come here unless they held magic of their own. So yes, while unimaginable to most people, Clover actually helped to fix this place. Maybe, just maybe, she had a minor help and she may or may not have used a few spells from her grandmother’s grimoire. In the end though, they managed to remove every speck of dirt and the place started to shine. And that was exactly when Clover came in. The furniture and basically everything around them except books and all the magic material, Clover picked it out and her father’s money paid for it. Just one card swipe here, another one there and Clo made sure this turned into a comfortable place for not just studying magic but also a cool hangout. If they had let her, she would have provided a juice bar as well but… yeah, apparently it was not a good idea.

The banter between Clover and Harley went on and Clo was actually enjoying herself a little. She leaned into her boyfriend’s kiss and would take even more but he walked away, leaving her on the table with a half-second pout. Elliot spoke up next, distracting Harley and Clover just rolled her eyes, focusing on her cigarette. A part of her was acting up. Honestly, it was not just the fact that Harley was back after abandoning her all those years ago. Clover also knew that the blonde and Aleks used to be close friends. She had no idea how far that friendship went, nor did she ever ask either of them. But she still felt a pang of jealousy inside and the green monster was slowly starting to resurface, climbing up her spine. Come on, Clover. What are you afraid of? You don’t even know what happened. Probably nothing anyway. What is this all about? Her inner voice was trying to convince her everything was alright. And it was, wasn’t it? Jesus, girl, get a grip!

It was Monty’s hand that broke her reverie as he brushed against her rear. She looked at him with a playful smile and let out a soft laugh over his reaction. “Calm down, Monty, jesus.” she shook her head. “I’m not a monster.” she added, putting her cigarette out in a crystal ashtray on the table. Apparently, there was one good thing about Harley being back. If it meant that her powers would stop being all over the place and draining her life force with even the tiniest spell, Clover could probably make her peace with the newest addition to their group. She never really studied the prophecy deeply. She read it, yes. But never really went deeper into it. After all, Kat and Monty were far smarter for these things, and if they couldn’t solve the mystery… At least Clover had that much self-reflection. “I agree. There has to be some sort of ritual. ?Maybe a sacred place we can go to on a special night, full moon or something. How about some other books? There must be something we can study.”

It became rather clear that it was not magic or anything about it that brought Harley back home. She apparently only found out by accident and this was now all very new to her. Everyone kept asking questions and in between that and the cold welcome by some members of the group, Elliot could imagine this was all rather overwhelming for the blonde. Therefore, he tried to be as welcoming as possible so Harley wouldn’t turn on her heel and run. Not that he considered her a coward but with everything piling up like this, he himself would decide to vanish if he was in her shoes. It was only Aleks’ voice that stopped him from talking more. Elliot needed to keep reminding himself that as much as he didn’t like the heiress, she was his best friend’s girlfriend and he needed to make his peace with it. How those two boys were friends, it was sometimes a wonder but it was only the redheaded athlete who could tame Elliot’s fire. It had always been that way and Elliot could say with conscience that it was their friendship that saved his ass way too many times at this point.

The conversation moved on to the prophecy. Elliot was not that book-smart guy here, there were more suited people here to do so. He fully trusted Kat and Monty to be the brains of their little library operation and he considered himself to be more of a muscle type of guy. “Are we sure we even need a ritual or ceremony or whatever?” he asked, throwing himself in a comfortable bean bag, shifting himself so he could see everyone. “I mean, maybe just Harley being back, acquiring her magic is enough.” he shrugged. Honestly, that sounded like a simple solution. Way too simple but a guy could hope, right? “If there is nothing in the book, then maybe there is nothing more to it. Kat, hun, could you repeat that prophecy to me?” he asked the artsy girl directly. “Or Monty. I know you guys have kind of memorized it, right?” he teased their nerdy sides.

And then something occurred to him. It was dark and bordering with dangerous. Especially considering how frantic their magic was. For a moment, Elliot was quiet and toyed with the zipper of his jacket. “Or…you know…” he started quietly. “We could ask the others.” he proposed, looking back at the others almost sheepishly. “I mean those before us…” he said, raising his eyebrows. “If we dare, that is.” Elliot was talking about using his powers, about trying to bring someone from the Underworld for a little chat. “I’m sure there are records here about other people like us. So if we want to risk this, I could…erm, I could make it happen.”

Maybe it was actually fate that had brought Harley back to Ashborough. There was clearly more to the town than meets the eye, though Harley still wasn't one hundred percent convinced that she wasn't dreaming. A small part of her felt as though at any minute, she might wake up, back in one of the cheap homes or slummy motels she stayed in with her dad. But the bigger part of her knew that this wasn't a dream, her father was back in whatever shithole town she'd left him in, and that magic was real. It was that last part that stirred the most emotion within her. Because she loved her dad, of course, but the clear displays of magic that she'd seen were blowing her mind. From the fire at the party to Clover's simple lighting of a cigarette, Harley couldn't lie to herself and say it wasn't impressive.

But it was also confusing, and terrifying. Harley didn't miss Monty's disappointment when she told him nothing like this had happened before, but she felt a silent thrill when he told her that it had been her who created the magic at the party. She glanced down at her hands, wondering what else she was capable of. The rational side of her brain kicked in, chastising her for believing it. Magic isn't real. But it was. If she wasn't dreaming, which she knew she wasn't, then what other explanation was there? Looking back up, Harley glanced around the room at her friends. The bond between them was real, had always been there. Only now it was deeper, something not quite understood but clearly very real. Monty went back to sit in another chair, Kat sat in the one Monty had left earlier, Clover perched on the table smoking, Alek and Elliot stood nearby.

Kat was the one who seemed the most excited about what was going on, so Harley looked at her finally, listening to her explain about the circle and a prophecy. She'd also explained that they each specialized in something, showing off her runes now that Harley had initially thought were just basic chinese tattoos or something. "They're amazing." Harley stepped closer, lifting Kat's arm to inspect the rune tattoos. "You'll have to tell me about them." Setting Kat's arm back down, Harley turned to look at Elliot as he spoke, seemingly hesitant about what he was saying. "Make what happen?" Harley asked, looking around at the others for a hint of what he was saying. It was Monty who answered, shrinking into his chair as he spoke, clearly unhappy about the idea. Harley thought for a moment before she shrugged. "Fuck it. I say we do it. Get some answers."

After apologizing to Clover for his inappropriate touch, he migrated to a different chair and sank into it. He realized he should have brought the book with him to skim through, because he wasn't sure what to do from here. Neither were the others, it seemed. A small frown appeared on his lips as he grew lost in thought, trying to recall everything that he'd read. Nothing stood out to him, though, but movement from Harley drew him out of his trance. He saw the girl approach Kat, studying her runes. "There's a book for that!" He suddenly jerked up, sitting on the edge of the chair. "I can show you. There's a few, actually, that can tell you all about runes. Might be some heavy reading, though, so I'm sure Kat can give you the rundown if you don't wanna read..."

He trailed off, his gaze snapping over to Elliot when the tattoo artist started to speak. Monty immediately started shaking his head, looking over at Harley when she asked what he was talking about. "Necromancy." He stated simply, crossing his arms. "Talking to the dead. It's dangerous magic, and with how everything is going, it's not a good idea." He looked back pointedly at Elliot, his bravado fading some, especially when Harley suddenly said they should do it. Of course he wouldn't go running, wouldn't abandon his friends, but was this really the way they wanted to do things? What if they set off the zombie apocalypse or something? Jesus... Looking between everyone again, Monty sighed, trying to judge how everyone else felt about the issue.

"I mean... it could be bad..." Monty muttered. "But then again... maybe with Harley back, our powers can settle, and we can actually pull it off." He thought for a moment before he suddenly looked back up. "Maybe we should try a few smaller spells first? And if they go okay, we can revisit the topic of calling on the dead." Resisting the urge to gulp in fear, Monty stood from the chair. "Why don't we all try something?" He suggested, his gaze landing on Harley. "Harley, can I...?" He approached her, lifting his hand to touch her arm when she nodded. Trying to focus, he softly touched her, a gasp catching in his throat as the image appeared in his mind. It was of Harley, clad in all black lingerie, while red lights shined down on her. She was singing, moving around sultrily, and Monty quickly yanked his arm back. His face now a tomato once more, he ran his fingers through his hair. "It, uh... it worked." Purposefully avoiding Harley's eyes, he looked over at Kat. "You wanna try, Kat?"

The Prophecy had consumed Katarina's life for quite a while. She mumbled it herself, repeated it absentmindedly as she worked or cleaned or painted. She knew every word by heart, the strange riddle she fully believed had been written so that they would never figure it out. Or maybe it was written in some old-timey idiomatic phrases she didn't understand. Whatever the case, she had spent hours diving and turning through nearly every book in that library trying to figure it out. And, other than realizing her friend group made up some interconnected flow of magic that someone was missing from, she came up with nothing. Kat knew that Monty had done the same, often spent hours with him in that Library, bouncing ideas and new information off one another in the hopes that what didn't make sense to one would fall into place for the other. But even together, they had come up with very little so far. They needed a new lead. Little did they know it would come in the form of a blonde long-lost friend.

She grinned at Harley, nodding as her friend examined the runes. "Of course," she replied, but her attention was quickly caught by Elliot. "Maybe if you paid attention once in a while, I wouldn't have to remind you all the time," Kat teased him in response to his question, a smirk playing on her lips. It was just sassy banter, and she probably would have repeated the prophecy to him eventually. But uncharacteristically, her tall, dark, and handsome friend was quiet for a moment, seemingly unsure before he spoke again. And Katarina nearly froze. Because of everything that had been going on around town, she hadn't even considered or thought of attempting to contact those that wrote the Prophecy in the first place, assuming they were dead. "The previous Circles, yeah," she answered softly, turning the thought over in her mind. Harley was the first to agree, enthusiastically at that. But she was still new, didn't fully understand the consequences if it went wrong, what could happen to Elliot... or the rest of them for that matter.

"Smaller spells are far different than what this could be," Katarina began, turning her attention to Monty. But he tried anyway, walking over to Harley and lifting a hand to her arm. Kat waited with bated breath, and whatever Monty saw seemed to shock him. But he didn't say anything about it. Whatever Harley had been up to all these years, he had seen a part of it. His voice speaking her name pulled her from her thoughts, and Katarina's turquoise eyes met his for a moment. "Sure," she answered softly, standing from the armchair once more. She had already used her ruins to turn on the lights. But that was simple, requiring only a little bit of energy. She needed to test something riskier, something more complex. Something like... healing the human body.

Turning to the lit fireplace, the reflection of the flames flickered in her eyes for a moment. Bending down, Kat reached towards the fire, closing her fingers around the metal frame that kept the tinder off the stone floor. She immediately heard the hissing sound, the sharp pain of burned flesh, and she winced. Her relationship with fire was complicated, to say the least, and she knew that pain all too well. Pulling her hand back, the brunette could already see the skin begin to change colors and blister, second or maybe even third-degree burns. Ignoring the stinging sensation, she activated the healing ruin tattooed into her skin, watching it reflect golden in the light. And just like that, the discoloration and blisters disappeared back into the skin, the pain only a memory. Kat felt slightly light-headed, a dull ache in the back of her skull, and moved to sit on the arm of the chair once again. But other than that, there were no consequences to the magic. Holding her palm out for the others to see, she grinned. "Mine worked too."

whatever it takes

To say that Aleksander was fed up with this restriction to his magic would be an understatement. One never truly realizes how many different things they touch in a single day until they have to purposefully think about all of them. Hell, just getting out of bed in the morning meant concentrating on the blankets so that they don't turn into lead or the floor so that it doesn't disappear beneath his feet. Drinking or any sort of party was no longer an option. Hell, he could barely kiss his girlfriend without worrying that he might turn her into a frog or something. And on top of all that, it meant that he couldn't get the healing magic he needed to repair his leg. Sure, it was several years ago now. But magical injuries healed far differently than normal ones. He and Katarina were just getting close to everything being back to normal when shit hit the fan and they had to hit pause. Things certainly hadn't gotten better since then. But, what if they had gotten worse?

The annoyed fire that lit in Aleks when he realized neither Monty nor Kat had any idea how to fix things now that Harley was back was nearly all-consuming. But he bit back any snarky or angry comments with what little self-control he possessed. It would do them no good to be angry at one another, not while they were trying to find a solution. Clover tried to help, and the redhead felt himself nodding along. "Witches are all about the dramatic, right? We probably need a cauldron and Eye of Newt or something stereotypical like that. They had to have written that down somewhere. How else would we be able to break the curse and finish the prophecy? Dumb luck?" Aleks felt his jaw tighten, his hands removed from his pockets clench into fists, the strong, masculine urge to put one through a wall. He had always been a bit rash and hotheaded. But in his older years, he found some semblance of control and held tightly on to it.

Elliot's words were like sedatives, immediately cooling and calming the ire and replacing it with something better: excitement. "I agree with Harley." Okay, those words were uncharacteristic given how he had been treating her since her arrival. But, Aleksander didn't care. This was at least a plan, actions they could take to figure out what was going on and make things better. So what if there were risks? Life was a risk. Every movement he made was a risk. It couldn't get any worse. "We could spend days, weeks even, digging through books that you two have already probably been through in the hopes of finding something. Or we could ask the people that wrote the damn thing and get answers now. Let's do this." Maybe Monty wasn't entirely wrong in wanting to test their magic first. But the thought struck a bit of fear in Aleks. But he had already committed to this and wasn't about to immediately turn tail and run.

So he watched as Monty lightly touched Harley, his clairvoyance immediately picking up on something that he didn't like or want to see. Knowing how the shy brunette's magic worked, Aleks couldn't help but be a bit envious and wondering. What had he seen? What had Harley been up to since she left Ashborough all those years ago? Why did it make Monty nervous and quiet? Before he could try to get answers, Katarina stood, practically placing her hand into a lit fire. Had it been Clover, the redhead wouldn't have been surprised. But Kat wasn't immune to burns in the same way his girlfriend was, she could feel the singed skin. Soon after, however, the rune-creator turned her palm to the group, revealing no injury remaining, and that gave him hope. "Alright, my turn," Aleksander said with excitement in his tone. Seeing the others do it meant he could as well, right? He looked around the Library in search of something "smaller," as Monty put it, that he could transmute. Settling on a nearby bookshelf, Aleks placed his hand lightly on it, concentrated, and felt the wood shift beneath his fingers. Soon, a pool table sat where the bookshelf once stood. Grinning, Aleks turned his attention back to his friends. "I always thought this place could use some more fun."
