Losing a parent was unlike anything else, and it seemed the three girls of Ashborough knew that better than most others. Katarina still relived the night she lost her mother in her nightmares nearly every night. She felt the heat of the flames on her skin, inhaled the bitter taste of smoke into her lungs, smelled the putrid stench of burning plastic and singed hair. She watched her house burn down over and over again, serving as some sort of reminder of what her magic had the potential to do. A few years back, Kat had created a rune to quell the nightmares, practically made it so she didn't have any dreams at all. At first, it was torture. Going to sleep and waking up with what seemed like nothing in between. She was constantly exhausted, and so she made a rune for that too. Something like a triple shot of espresso activated with a simple wave of her hand. Eventually, it all got easier. That is, until this jumble with magic acting up began. Now she was back to nightmares and restless nights.
Clover lost her mother after Harley had left, right around the time she and Kat became friends. Cancer was a bitch, and it always would be. Kat did her best to be there for her friend, but it brought up a lot of memories for her that she didn't quite know how to deal with. And now Harley was in the same boat. Unfortunately, her old friend didn't have the same magic to help her deal with it. At least, not that Kat knew of anyway. But then again, things could change in over a decade, couldn't they? Whatever the case, even though Harley had been gone for so long, Katarina still felt like they were old friends, they still shared that same bond over music and kindergarten playground scuffles that began all those years ago. She knew how it felt to lose a parent, and pretty much her entire family. She knew how it felt to be alone. So, she wanted to be there for her friend in her time of mourning, even if they hadn't spoken in nearly half of their lives.
Katarina took a step back as others went into console Harley, adjusting the bag across her body before slipping her hands into the front pockets of her black skinny jeans. Turquoise blue eyes slipped over to Elliot at his suggestion of Phill's and she nodded, knowing they could probably all use a drink to take the edge off. Especially Alek and Clover, who seemed to have an aura of bitterness practically radiating off of them. It was true, that nothing had moved in Ashborough in the ten years or so Harley had been gone. A few new places were open, and some had closed. But generally, the town had stayed the same. Some thought that to be boring, but Kat found it rather comforting. When life felt hectic, it was nice to know she had a handful of familiar places to go to clear her head. They took off towards the pub, and it wasn't long before they were sliding into their designated booth. The waitress came, taking the orders before leaving their table in silence, and Harley was quick to notice.
Monty's follow-up words caused Katarina to stifle a laugh behind her hand, glancing over at her clairvoyant friend. He had always been the shy type, but their conversations allowed them both to relax some. It was all platonic, but meaningful. The waitress returned with their drinks, and Kat pulled the glass of Long Island Iced Tea to her lips, taking a sip through the plastic straw. The bitter taste of the multitude of alcohols mixed with cola was a comfort spot for her, her favorite beverage. It was the type of drink that you order when you want to either take the edge of or forget the night altogether. Katarina savored the flavor for a moment, letting it calm the nerves that were struck from the town hall meeting. She wanted this whole 'uncontrollable magic' thing to be over just as bad as everyone else. But she didn't know how to fix it. At least the alcohol might take her mind off of it for a moment. "It's nice to have the old squad back together again," Kat said, trying to save Monty from himself. "Especially with everything in town seeming to go crazy."
