[Day 1]
[Day 1]
What a weird morning. First, I wake up with the window open and my phone alarm activating twice in one morning. Second, people have been avoiding me for some reason. They'd stare at me as if I'm a lost tourist, and if I look back, they'll just avert their eyes as if they weren't looking at me in the first place. I couldn't even say "good morning" because of that! Maybe it's because I had just moved to Yamanashi a few days ago. Even then, is the community in this town so tight-knit they would ostracize their new unknown neighbor?
Sigh... Maybe I'm just overthinking it, I thought. I moved in Nemusou Town, one of the oldest towns in Yamanashi. Most of the houses here were either close to breaking down and was up for rent or sale, and as such, the town looked terribly pale. It doesn't help that the weather was humid and cloudy today, adding to the depressing atmosphere. Still -- it was one of the cheapest houses I bought with my late parents' inheritance money. A year's worth of rent in Tokyo for a permanent residence under my name in Nemusou Town? If you were a common-sensing intellectual like me, the choice was easy.
Since I didn't have a bike yet, I have to walk for a while to get to Akanotohana School. I thought of using my inheritance money to buy one, but I didn't want to waste it too much. I have to be responsible as someone living alone, so I have to get a part-time job within the next week or so.
My seemingly uneventful walk filled with my thoughts wouldn't last long, however.
"Yoooo! Are you also a student from Akanotohana?!" A man shouted behind me. Turning around without disrupting my stride, the man had a bright, spiky orange hair and an expressive emotion. From a closer observation as he kept running closer to me, he also had the same uniform as I did: a blue long-sleeved shirt, striped blue tie, with corresponding black pants and white shoes.
"Hiyaaaa!" He energetically greeted himself with a gleeful smile. "The name's Makoto Takahashi! I thought I was the only one from the school living here in Nemusou."
"Ah... I'm pleased to meet you as well," I greeted him with a bow. "I'm Hiroshi Akaki."
"Akaki?" Takahashi pondered for a second before gasping, "Ah, Akaki-san! You're the new resident."
I nodded. "I moved here a few days ago, how did you know?"
With a chuckle, Takahashi answered, "Nah. It's just so quiet here in Nemusou. There aren't a lot of residents here so I instantly knew."
"I-I see..." After his statement, it instantly confirmed my earlier thought: the fact that the community here in Nemusou really is tight-knit. That would explain why my other neighbors looked at me ealier like a weird zoo animal. "Have you long have you been living here? And how's campus life at Akanotohana?"
As we answered each other's questions, we continued to walk to our school. It won't take long before the school campus would be in view, because the town entrance is located a few blocks away from the campus proper. Takahashi answered my previous question, "I came to Nemusou around a year ago. It was really boring at first, but I've grown accustomed to the peaceful atmosphere in this town. It's like nothing's ever happening!" He continued. "Akanotohana is the same. It gets really, really crowded during the school festival though, it's like people all over the city come here to buy our food."
It didn't take long for us to enter the main road, where the Akanotohana School building lay just beyond the pine trees and unbloomed cherry blossom trees. But instead of walking with Takanashi towards the school, he instead went to the right. I asked him, "Where are you going? School's supposed to be that way."
"Cutting class, of course! It's the start of the year, so I bet teachers will give me a little leeway for being absent in the first day of class~" He playfully laughed. "You coming?"
Urgh... He does have a point. Nothing really ever happens during the first day of class, but I already thought of going early to give my current classmates a good impression of me -- the new transferee.
What do I do, then?
>> Be a delinquent and cut the first day of class
>> Go to school like I originally planned on doing
