Josh grinned, “Well, it seemed like it was a few hours. Supposing time flies when you are enjoying yourself as opposed to something like math class when Halley’s comet will return before it ends. Gentleman Wolf. Both you and me.”
Josh reclined on his bed and put his hands behind his head, “You still stuffed? I’m not so stuffed. I might munch on a couple of Mandarin oranges or a slice of bread with peanut butter before calling it a night. You bet, definitely worth going back to. Tomorrow, maybe I’ll have time to write a quickie review for my Foodballs blog. If you want to share your experience, I can add that also.” Josh opened his mouth to voice what he was thinking of saying about Burger Dome when the phone rings. He makes a sour face of sympathy when he sees Matt’s reaction. Our moms ought to meet each other.
“Ma says hi.” Josh mouths softly, “Hi to you also ma’am.” He picks up a spiral notepad and lays on his stomach and writes what he’s thinking of posting to the blog. The writing is mostly chicken scratch English mixed with Japanese characters in case he wanted to post a Japanese translation of his eatery review. His pen drops when Matthew’s tone changes. His ears become alert in case something is said that needs focused attention.
Matthew’s eyes lock onto Josh and his eyes latch onto those blue eyes. He rolls up and sits on the bed with his legs off the side of the bed upon mention of boyfriend. His face tilts and is befuddled as his ears now make out a different voice. Kiss? Check. Then… Did I just hear what I thought I heard? Josh’s face reddens. That sure is an inappropriate question. He immediately puts his earbuds in so he can listen to his music to drown out the questioning. Josh looks at the screen as he decides to watch music videos featuring Nova Dream, his favorite J-Pop boy band. It helps muffle his boyfriend’s conversation especially when he starts singing along but his singing is subdued. Some moments later, he looks up to see Matthew set the phone down. He closes his phone and takes out the earbuds.
“No need to apologize. Family is family. We all have our own tempos. I tried my best to not pay attention too much after the other voice came on the line especially when my ears started to make out certain things.” Make out? Poor choice of wording. Let’s move on. Josh explains, “I have good hearing and I had to give my ears something else to pay attention to.” He awkwardly says, “Sorry if I heard more than what I should have heard.”
