Otherside…

Li Mei was knelt near the side of a stone walkway in the middle of the main square of town, oblivious to her surroundings. Snugly on her head sat her over ear headphones, playing some kind of Low-fi version of a popular song. She had quite a few pigeons surrounding her, hoping onto her legs and shoulders occasionally. This was something she did regularly and by now, most of the local pigeons had caught on that she was a friend not a foe, and so flocked to her when she was around. She’d brought them Lentils, sunflower seeds and popped corn this time. She carried the mixture in a little stainless steel container.

This time however, Li Mei had dropped her container and was gently handling a small white pigeon. She had one hand around its wings and had flipped the bird onto it’s back so she could look at its feet. She had noticed this pigeon limping when It walked and was trying to figure out the problem. The Pigeon had metal wire wrapped around one of its feet so tightly the poor thing could hardley move. She slowly began the process of unwinding the wire.

Li Mei was paying no attention to the stares she was getting but she could almost feel them drilling into her back. She looked absolutely mad, she imagined. Still, she continued her work with determination. Just as the last of the wire was twisted away, she heard a group of people insistent on getting her attention. So insistent, in fact, she could hear them over her music. She hadn’t quite caught their words, but they sounded rather upset. Adjusting her grip on the bird to switch to one hand, she slowly slipped the headphones off her ears and around her neck. She didn’t look up but began to listen when suddenly.

Whoosh… plop

Li blinked, trying to process what had just happened. She felt something unpleasantly wet hit her shoulder. She stood up abruptly, the pigeons had scattered and left, apart from the one she had just rescued which was still firmly in her grasp. She gently placed the bird down and it flew away with it’s friends.

Someone had thrown a bagel at her. She stared at it on the floor by her feet. Her eyes then fixed on a group of youths who were laughing and coming her way. “What a fucking disgrace” one of them said making a general gesture towards her. “She’s missing her own kind I guess… fuckin disease spreaders.” another said, then spat on the ground near her.

“You are more likely to spread disease doing that.” She said matter of factly. This probably wasn’t the best course of action she decided as the man who had spat laughed again. Li Mei didn’t really understand what was so funny. “Girl you best watch that mouth of yours.” There was a sinister note in his tone. Even she could pick up on that. Anger flashed across her face. It wasn’t often that this kind of confrontation happened, but it’s frequently had definitely increased since moving here.

She glared at the man and In a flat, deadpan tone“You should mind your own fucking business” In response he stepped closer to her and jabbed a boney finger into her chest. There were two other men and a woman behind him, which wasn’t really a comfort to her.
“Listen here you little squinty bitch…” Mei Li was wondering if she should run. All around her, people looked on but no one said a thing. Her widened eyes fixed on the man again as he opened his mouth to finish his sentence.

TAVON GREENE

  • mood

    annoyed

Tavon was bored out of his mind. His in-ear beats headphones naturally gracing his ears gently. The wire running up his lean, but toned physique. The one thing he’d always be adorning, especially if he was alone were those headphones. Ironically given the upcoming situation he was listening to
Ryan Mack, Only Human
. Was music outside his general favorite genre but Ryan Mack had some bangers that really hit the heart.

Not everyday is gonna be easy, you might collect some scars.
Fuck those lyrics could hit anyone’s soul.
Some lovers are gonna break your heart, tear it into a million pieces.
Tavon couldn’t help but sway his skull smoothly while attending to those precise lyrics.

The youth was lying upon a steel green bench in downtown Haven Falls. His hazel spheres were shut. Oblivious to everything presently transpiring around him as darkness was enveloping him with his eyes shut. Tonations, outside the alluring music, all but detached. He could feel the delicate sunlight grazing across his light chocolate surface. For a brief moment he nonchalantly unlocked his left eye. He could recognize a woman feeding some pigeons, people traversing throughout the downtown sidewalks. Cars strolling casually, the youth couldn’t even perceive the engines of the vehicles. He loved his headphones more than his own father sometimes.

He investigated the girl feeding pigeons in the downtown atmosphere but it wasn’t bothering him, so he hadn’t given two shits.
No harm, no foul.

But as those bright hazel spheres lazily inspected the woman he could see something else transpiring. Four individuals flowing around the woman who had been feeding or helping the pigeons. Tavon could tell something was up. Growing up in Detroit, you gained a natural instinct to understand when shit was about to pop off. You had to, in order to survive.

“Mother fucker”
He murmured to himself, slight tones of annoyance. He wouldn’t, couldn’t, allowing himself to sit around and watch something like this transpire. He wasn’t a ‘hero’ he was just human. He slid his in-ear headphones from his receivers. Sitting up from his lying situation upon the bench, he began to nonchalantly emerge upward. He could hear the individuals that seemed to heckle the woman from a generally decent distance. If anything it explained how far Tavon was from the transpiring occurrence.

Upon standing the youth began to stretch, all 6’ 3” of his frame arising. A boisterous
“ugh”
flowing through his rims from the elongated stretch. His black jacket began to slither up his decently toned arms, by his own accord of pushing his sleeves up. Traversing to the occurrence, his deep tonations flowing from his lips.

“Yo, stupid mother fucker! How’re you gonna disrespect someone like that?!”

Tavon could handle himself quite well in a fight. His frame, and reach gave him a universal advantage over others. He didn’t necessarily savor the approach of fighting. But certain people need to be hustled a certain way. Men who would aggressively approach women like this individual was, were the type you had to be threatening towards. They tried to act like lions, but they were cubs. There was a quote that he quite liked, and lived by.

I avoid fights because I’m scared of what I’ll do, not because I’m scared of you.

Despite the song Tavon had been listening to he couldn’t argue with the fact that he, broadly speaking, didn’t like people. Nonetheless his physique continued traversing towards the altercation
“Also how is everyone gonna stand there and watch something like this? Trust me you stupid fucks. You aren’t being looked at like you’re respected. There isn’t one motherfucker here thinking… you tell her!”
He made sure to utter like a condescending redneck the words, you tell her. Tavon stretched his neck out slightly as he had nearly arrived to the nearby operation
“So either keep on moving the fuck on, or get your ass kicked, and trust me. More people will help me before they help you out.”

Naturally, Tavon figured it was human nature that the moment someone spoke up, others would follow suit. Additionally he figured those four individuals would move on as well. Most people, when called out, kept stepping. Which was the case as Tavon traversed his sights over to the woman who had been helping, and feeding the pigeons. The individuals that had been picking on her left the scene.
“What were you even doing anyway?”
Tavon inquired, his hazel spheres viewing the woman.

Otherside…

Li did not realise that her hands had been shaking. It was just so unfair to be so incredibly outmatched by the feeblest of men. She clenched them, and let herself huff out a shakey breath which she had been holding in her chest. She had wanted to snap that man’s finger backwards that had been poking her in the chest. Luckily, she had not had to make that ‘fight or flight’ decision. Shit like this gets around in this town. She knew that her adoptive parents would not stand for that behaviour. Whoever those men were, well, they’d be in custody before they could utter another slur. But, in the moment, who knows how far it would have gone. Would they have followed her home?

After she had let herself calm down, saying nothing as the situation was solved for her and everyone moved on, she looked up at the man who had done the solving. Almost impossibly tall, clearly very athletic, an intimidating individual indeed. Not someone you’d willingly start a fight with. His gaze met hers steadily. It took her a moment to find her voice to answer his question. God she felt like she was straining her neck just to look at this man. And what had he asked? A stupid question really, he has eyes doesn’t he?

She nearly said that out loud, but it would have probably sounded quite rude and this man had just done her a great favour. She held her tongue and tried to translate his real meaning. He probably meant why. Why are you kneeling on the street feeding pigeons. God, how long have I let this silence go on now? Why is this somehow worse than dealing with those racists!?

Li Mei let out an awkward “Er, sorry” she cleared her throat “Pigeons were once really important to us, if fact we spent hundreds of years domesticating them to work alongside us, only to abandon them…” she said, she knew his question was probably not looking for her long winded pigeon rant, but she honestly didn’t know how else to answer his stupid question, and she really couldn't help herself. “Now they’re, you know, whatever that guy said, disease spreaders, In reality you are probably more likely to catch something from a door knob” she said, matter of factly. “Anyway, I like to befriend the pigeons in the area, I’ve done it wherever I’ve live since I was six. I was helping that one I was holding, it had steel wire wrapped around its leg…” She afforded him a small apologetic smile, because she was kind of used to a weird look and an excuse to leave at this point, or maybe earlier than this point. “Er, anyway.” She said hastily “Thank you for your help. Not sure what my next move was gonna be there.” She angrily brushed at the bits of avocado and cream cheese that were on her shoulder, then instantly regretted it as now it was on her skin. She wrung her hand a bit, and reached into her shoulder bag with the un-tarnished one for some tissues. “Not very original with “squinty”, but throwing food… really?” Shd muttered to herself fully expecting the young man to have mumbled something and made his leave by now.

TAVON GREENE

    annoyed

Tavon was apprehensive of what she was doing. But he had anticipated her explanation would have provided better wisdom other than the simplistic obvious, other than typically I’m feeding pigeons in the center of a bustling downtown sidewalk.
She knew pigeons flew to where the feed was, right?
That she could truthfully be feeding them elsewhere and there wouldn’t be a shitload of them around… the prevalent walkway. Maybe she hadn’t conceded that thought process. Or she desired to feed these distinct pigeons. He didn’t know, and he wasn’t about to think within her thought process.

Sometimes when you walk through a store you see an unattended, or neglected child. Causing some sort of problematic situation for everyone else. Tavon traversed his eyes through the populace. Did someone leave their child unattended? He thought about asking her if she knew where her mommy was. Was she off getting her nails done and she gave you bird feed? Are you lost and need assistance, little one?

But as the woman spoke she confirmed…
She liked befriending… pigeons
in the area. Tavon was somewhat speechless. It’s best when situations like this occur to not even attempt to comprehend. Just nod and essentially ignore the comments.

Conversing with this woman was difficult. It was like when someone walked around showing you their baby. What do you even say in situations like that? Oh, you’ve got a cute baby? It was no different here. Oh… you’re doing a good job feeding those pigeons. They sure do look like they’re good friends of yours.

She had mentioned that she wasn’t sure what she would’ve done in the previous situation. Probably gotten her ass kicked, he thought. But he digressed and simply said
“You could’ve taken them.”
He wasn’t sure what to say to her. Like talking with a child when you know you curse like a sailor. A minor smile graced upon his rims as she had thanked him
“You’re welcome. Wasn’t that big of a deal.”

Gazing around once more, looking through the crowded sidewalk of downtown Haven Falls the youth inquired.
“So are you here with your family? Or did you just come downtown to feed… your friends?”
if she came downtown just to feed pigeons, her friends, it had to be a first, right? He started to wonder if she was mentally stable. Borderline regretting ‘coming to the rescue.’ Was she hungry?
“So, were you interested in some food? There are a couple joints downtown if you were hungry?”

This place was gonna be a pigeon shit nightmare here in a couple minutes. People walking through the sidewalk just getting dive bombed with pigeon poop.
“I just have a suspicion that we probably don’t wanna be here in about 10 minutes. Then again though, they’re your friends so... maybe you don't mind pigeon shit.”
Naturally his subconscious had been thinking.
Why the fuck did I help this girl?

Li Mei met the large boy's gaze again. He is still here? She didn't really expect that. "You could have taken them" She spoke before she thought, kind of caught off guard that she was still having this conversation. "I don't think so." She said plainly. I think that was sarcasm. Well, hopefully he took that as playing along, then again, at this point, it didn't really matter. Her social Faux Pas were hardly the stand out in this situation. He smiled when she thanked her, told her it was nothing. She could tell by his face he was... not comfortable, weirded out, even when he smiled at her. She couldn't work out why he was still here if he was feeling this way. The next thing he said gave her a clue though. He had begun speaking to her as if she was a small child. She knew that tone, every one of the adults her adoptive parents showed her off to had spoken to her in the same way. She sighed, her face turning from neutral to slightly annoyed as he continued to ask her questions. He even offered to go and buy her some food. She shook her head, how was she going to say this? Lets try to be tactful here. Her initial emotional response was to tell him to shut the fuck up and not to talk to her like that. He doesn't understand. I don't understand plenty of things. It's fine.

"Look." She said as firmly as she could without raising her voice "I'm not a lost child. I'm not homeless either." She told him “And to clarify…” she began, “I don't have a need to throw any feed on the ground and cause a swarm.” She took some steps back from him until she was maybe 3 meters away. She grabbed a small pinch of feed and opened out her palm facing up. As if trained, a couple pigeons landed on her outstretched arm, her shoulders, wherever they could land, looking for the food in her hand. One even landed on her baseball cap clad head. She was not new to this. This particular flock also knew her face. Sometimes, she didn't need the feed to catch their attention. And the injured ones, they always seemed to know to come to her.

Before the rest of them caught on she gently pulled away her hand forcing the birds to take flight again and casually stepped back towards him. Some curious pigeons still wandered around nearby but they weren't bothering the pair. She began her process of packing up. She put the food away in her bag, brought her hand sanitiser and Kleenex out and cleaned her hands best she could till she could get to a tap. She also grabbed a plastic bag out of her shoulder bag and put her black baseball cap and her old overshirt inside. Putting it away, she grabbed a clean white hoodie out of her bag and put it on over the white Tee she had on. Occasionally she did get pooped on, but honestly less often than she would have thought, she did this anyway just in case. She looked around at the pigeons, who to her, seemed to be as they were again, staying pretty clear from the humans. They didn’t go near her if she had company.

Once she was good and ready she decided to answer his actual questions.

"I'm downtown because I just finished my shift at the Diner round the corner." She told him "If you want to come get lunch with me, that's fine. I can buy you a burger, for your help." She began walking slowly "My bike is back at Betty's diner, so I need to go there anyway." She began walking in the direction she had stated. "My name is Li Mei, by the way. You can call me “May” if it's easier, I don't really mind." She didn’t return the question, if he wanted to tell her his name she was sure he would. She also didn’t really mind whether he came with her or not. Her face softened a little anticipating what he could be thinking when she said she worked at the diner. "...They put me in the kitchen pretty quick, if you hadn't guessed." She smiled properly for the first time. It was ok to laugh at yourself sometimes. She would spend her whole life cringing otherwise.

TAVON GREENE

    disappointed in himself

As Li Mei was breaking down the proper approach of feeding the pigeons, and how it wasn’t a genuine issue that Tavon was making it out to be, Tavon realized his oversight. He was being an overly embellishing asshole. He realized it, sometimes his blunt sarcasm went too far. As she finished illuminating the occurrence of pigeon feeding, and that she wasn’t in fact a lost girl, or homeless he apologized.
“You’re right, that’s my bad. Seriously, no sarcasm. That’s my b.”
He declared, pointing at his chest. Willing to take his thrashing for being an asshole to her.

When Li Mei began making subtle movements, Tavon naturally traversed beside her. Must’ve seemed odd to onlookers. A 5’ 5” woman walking with a 6’ 3” man. But they nonetheless headed to the diner that Li Mei was traversing towards. Tavon gently nodded “Good to meet you May, I’m Tavon. I had two particular friends that called me Tay. We were close, real close. So just call me Tavon.” He was referring to Reed and Willow, Dahlia’s older brother and sister.

He hadn’t meant that May didn’t have the right to call him Tay. Tavon would just find it odd, given only those two other people referred to him as Tay, and he looks up to them. Moreso Reed, than Willow. He felt like he and Willow had a different connection, almost slightly flirtatious. Nonetheless they helped him transition from living in a rough inner city to a more rural area. May probably understood the difference of growing up as a minority in a rural state like North Dakota.

It isn’t an easy transition. The racism is different, as she just experienced. He popped one of his in-ear earbuds into his ear. He could feel the ‘demons’ resurfacing. Just inner thoughts that he tried ignoring. The Show Goes On by Lupe Fiasco had been blaring within his eardrum. He hadn’t asked May if it was okay, if he listened to music while they walked. If she disapproved she could voice it, and he’d still listen either way. Beside, his other ear was attentive to her voice.

His hazel sphere’s gazing over towards her direction
“So mainly pigeons or you an overall animal person?”
He inquired as the view of the diner had come into his overall vision.
“That said what’re your other hobbies?”
Tavon didn’t usually partake in small talk. Wasn’t that he couldn’t, but he usually didn’t give a shit about the other individual. But one, he felt bad earlier for acting like she was some small child, and two, he was genuinely interested. This woman more than likely, had the same general experiences he had with being a minority.

Reed and Willow helped him, so naturally he’d try and help her. Assuming she didn’t already have help. But having someone else is better. May hadn’t realized it but she was actually the one person that Tavon had a legitimate conversation with in weeks. He was either arguing with his father, or alone, most of the time. The other Blake sibling, Dahlia, although Tavon liked her. He felt every day more dis-attached from her since inconsequential things were her top priority... her popularity.

Otherside…

It seems the way she had handled herself in that situation had been correct. She had nodded, acknowledging his apology, and relaxed her body language and the annoyed expression on her face. As he followed her on her way back to her place of work, he introduced himself in return. Tavon, his close friends call him Tay." She logged the information away thinking to herself she was probably going to call him Tavon until he outright suggested she could call him something else. How could she possibly know when they were at the right level of friendship? Or was it... person specific? Would she need to come up with her own nickname for him?

It's probably not this big of a deal, huh?

"It's nice to meet you too" And she did mean it. She found herself craving human connection sometime. She had just been soo far behind her peers in terms of social skills when she moved here, not only that but she had also skill regressed heavily from her own trauma. She had gone from being bi-lingual and quite well spoken, to basically non-verbal. It had taken years to get to the point she was at now. She was only just starting to try to make some proper friendships. Tavon had followed her and was now showing, what she assumed was genuine interest in her. She supposed it could be because he felt bad, but she decided it wasn't worth speculating. She would soon find out if she saw him again. She wondered how old he was. He was tall and athletic, but he looked youthful. Was he around her age?

As the approached their destination, Tavon began some small talk with her, asking her about herself. Again she wondered was this the 'fill the silence' kind of small talk, or did he want to get to know her. She kind of enjoyed the latter. She liked knowing all the little details about someone, she found it interesting.

"Well, to your first question, yes I would say animals in general." She began "People are hard, animals are simple. Me and my sister, we had a little dog growing up, and she would only listen to me. Everyone wondered why, especially because I was only about 9 years old, but it was just because I paid attention." She was smiling to herself, momentarily caught up in her memories "I think I learned dog body language before I learned human body language..." She laughed to herself and then awkwardly realised what she was doing. She wasn't really doing the small talk thing right was she, monologuing at every chance she got. "As for other interests, erm, well I like running and track and field, I'm on the track team at school... I like crafty type things too, Knitting, wood carving, things like that" She wasn't sure if she should be listing more. She also noticed that all of the hobbies she listed were very solo.

Just ask him about himself, Mei.

"So, I've talked you ear off. Sorry about that, I get carried away. What about you Tavon?" She enquired curiously "I can see you like your music" She smiled to show, hopefully, that she was totally fine with it "What are you listening to?" They had reached the diner by then, and Mei headed inside, grabbing a couple of menus as they made their way to a little booth in a corner of the room. Li Mei liked to pick the one furthest from the flow of the waitresses, especially since she did NOT like a single one of them. Most of them had made fun of her at some point. She doubted they would in front of another customer, but she'd sure hear about it at work.
