The Ark, the last bastion of hope for a race born from a world destroyed, is pictured above. This is where all humans currently known have been born, have lived, and have died. The true scope of the vessel is hard to explain, but in relative terms, it has a similar amount of living territory to a state such as Ohio. This ship was constructed by the final generation of Earth dwelling humans as a last resort to continue the species as the Earth crumbled into ruin.
No one knows exactly what happened to Earth in it's final days, the logs were never installed detailing human history. In fact, the ship itself was never fully finished when launched. All that is known of Earth is legend and mystery passed down through stories by the first generation of residents, sent into the stars nine hundred years before the current time, leaving the five million residents of the Ark in ignorance.
In a search for a new home among the stars, automated scouts have been sent into the cosmos for the past seven hundred years to no avail, until now. One lone scouting drone has reported a planet that is similar in size and mass to Earth, with favorable conditions for life to exist, with one caveat, the indigenous species. What is found on this planet is a mystery to all, and those who leave to explore the new world may never return, but this risk is well worth it for fifty souls sent into the void as an exploration party.
Some info regarding the Ark.
The government is strict, and to maintain the maximum cap of five million residents, only the best and brightest, or most physically strong and apt people are allowed to reproduce. Everyone else is sterilized at a young age (not castrated, but rendered inert in terms of reproductive ability). Due to this fact, children are a a rarity among the society, and they are viewed as holier than though among all citizens.
Poverty is non existent in this society. Everyone has an assigned job, one that they do dutifully until reaching the age of seventy when they can retire. Everyone is a cog within the machine that is the Ark, and everyone, no matter how high or low they are assigned, is a prisoner as well, for there is no place for humans to go outside of the massive walls of the ship. It is on the Ark where you live, and where you will die.
Most people never leave the surface, but rumors exist of societies that live under the main level within the bowels of the ship. No one aside from the security forces know if these rumors hold weight.
