Think of it as a constant power struggle. They fightvamongst each other a lot and the only thing they respect is strength/power. No matter what firm it takes.
The most powerful demon reigns supreme and his/her word is law around there. Anyone is welcome to challenge or support the current demon lord but it is usually wise to not piss off the most powerful demon alive atm.
