Welcome welcome to the recruitment thread for the upcoming RP I want to run! But in order to do that I have some explaining to do, don't I? Namely, what exactly is this RP going to be? The Extraordinarily mundane world is as the name implies. Rather mundane at first glance as it has the same things you see every day, but there is a catch. Humanity isn't alone in its day to day grind. The world is inhabited by scores of creatures and beings we have created in our minds. How this happens is thanks to a specific energy called Focus. A type of magic that seems to have a will of its own that manifests when a group of people start believing in something to be true. The effects can range from small things like spoons being bend with the mind or a deck of cards being shuffled by its own, to the more dangerous, such as a village believing a wicked witch lives in their forest and soon enough children start going missing and end up in a stew. Focus has allowed for a lot of things to become manifest in the world and has been both a benefit and a curse on mortal life for centuries.

But where do you, the players, fit into this? You will play as newly recruited members of an organization known as The Archivists. You're tasked with exploring, cataloging and when required, fight off anomalies, creatures and people related to the Focus. The organization is split into different departments-People and entities, Objects of power, Tomes and scrolls, sites and Hidden histories. Each department examines different focus subjects and their name implies what they cover. Often times they overlap and work together and have sub-divisions working on different projects if there is a need. You are encouraged to explore what each department is working on and apply your own abilities where you believe you're best suited. It's a dangerous job, so you will be equipped with gear that will help you even the odds. Your investigations will take your to those corners of the world that have been left untouched by man. You will meet with the people who have co-existed with humanity for centuries. Unearth the secrets to ancient mysteries about the Focus. Maybe stop off at a supernatural pub or two?

Anyone can join. As long as you have a comprehensive grasp of the English language, you're good to go. You can play as a normal human or something else, like a werewolf, vampire or a fishman. If you're unsure, just DM me or ask below and we can work something out for you. I'm comfortable with 8-10 players as the most, but I may take on more if people are interested.

Now if you're interested and want to make a character, just follow the example bellow on how it will look like.

Appearance: You can either post a picture or describe your character with your own words. Whichever works for you the best.
Name: Your character's name
Race: If they're a human or something else
Age: How old they are
Gender: Man, woman, non-binary etc.
Nationality: What part of the world they come from. Doesn't have to be a real place, you can make something up and we can work on it.
Occupation: This isn't mandatory, but it helps describe what your character has done before being recruited and what department of the organization they can fit in the best.
Trait: Maybe your character is good at something or maybe they're born with some ability. Write it down here. You can unlock more traits in the future, but you're just limited to one for now.
Gear preference: This is another optional field, but it will help decide what particular items your character might find useful and what tasks they can perform out in the field.
Bio: Write their background here

Example:
Appearance:
dzv1X5E.jpg

Name:
Liubo, the man of arms from Prague
Race:
Former human, now skeleton
Age:
173
Gender:
Male
Nationality:
Czech
Occupation (optional):
Former circus strongman, now vigilante
Trait: Calcium efficiency
-The lack of skin and organs in half of his body and the tonic that keep him 'alive' reduce the damage Liubo takes in combat. He also restores health using milk and dairy products.
Gear preference(optional):
He has none
Bio: Liubo was a circus strongman in his former life. He traveled all over Europe with his carnival troupe and performed in front of huge crowds. But as it happens with many strongmen, the desire to increase his strength became his obsession. Weights were not enough. He required something more and the snake oil salesman that trailed behind the carnies he was with would provide. He gave Liubo a tonic made from the milk of several different animals. To both their surprise, the effects were instant. The strongman could now carry the entire circus on his back. Literally. He was unmatched in sheer strength, but such gains, have a price. In order to maintain his form, Liubo needed more of the tonic. An addiction that would be his undoing as it eroded him from the inside until his eventual collapse and death. He was buried in Prague as it was his favorite city to visit and perform in. But it was not the end for him, as the tonic had somehow preserved the muscles in his arms and legs. His grave was left empty, which baffled authorities. Even more puzzling is the reports of a skeletal figure roaming the streets at night, attacking criminals and leaving them tied up for the police to pick up. Citizens also report sprees of missing milk, cheeses and other dairy products often times finding money on their table that wasn't theirs. Regardless if they believed or not, the legend of Liubo was here to stay.

I think I'll have a field researcher that specialises in objects of power and tomes and scrolls.

There's more like him running around so you never know what you might see.

I'm not one to claim originality, so there is a real chance I have read this at some point and it impacted me in some way :v
Oh I was in now way trying to attack your originality; I'm overjoyed to find an RP with this concept!

There's no offense taken, don't worry! I'm rather happy that you like the concept since its an idea I've been toying with recently and its good to hear others like it.

I'm definitely interested. I like the idea of our beliefs rendering something existent! So count me in!

Question: Can we be one of the Focused or whatever you call them?

Also, a question: what sort of tech level are we looking at? Is this a medieval fantasy setting, modern, something in between?
Tech levels is at around the near future thanks to the Focus, but not at major sci-fi levels, but we're still in the 2020s.

Yes. The example for character creation, Liubo, is someone like that. People believed that tonics made from whatever assortment of random ingredients and he happened to drink one that did work. So you can play a vampire, werewolf or some other being like that.

Alright! When can we expect the character sheet ?
It's this part of the op

This is hella dope and I'm so interested. Here's my character:

Appearance:
53185833_p7_master1200.jpg
Name: Richard "Dick" McNulty, Agent of the Department of People and Entities [ADPE]

Race: Human (benevolently-possessed[He's a fucking nuisance though.])

Age: 42

Gender: A man's man.

Nationality: American, hard boiled, born and raised in the streets of New York City.

Occupation: Dick used his "natural talents" and "canny insight" to pursue a career in law enforcement. He spent many years as a beat cop, but through one too many hunches he was forcibly promoted to Murder Detective. He spent over a decade exposed to the worst humanity had to offer. This changed 6 years ago, when a director of The Archivists was sent to assist him on a murder investigation suspected to have a supernatural element. Director Kwon Soyun used an enchanted monocle to find the killer, but as a side effect she noticed his little secret. After the murder was solved, they suggest he join. Coerced, more like it. After a month of thorough convincing, he finally relented and joined The Archivists. Most are stumped at what a normal detective is doing in The Archivists, but hey, he is damn good.

Trait:

[Space Ghost Coast to Coast]

When Dick was six years old on All Hallow's Eve a friend of his challenged him to a test of courage. They dared him to go into an old moldering haunted house and bring back something cool. Being a six year old, Dick took this very seriously. With courage in his heart and a nervous shake in his legs, he snuck into the house. Initially he only found dusty trash, discarded beer cans, and empty syringes. But underneath a rotting floorboard, inside an antique box, he found something cool. An antique lighter, with an engraving of a skull on it. He reached for it eagerly. But once his hand was around it, a great cloud of smoke shot out of the lighter. It rushed to him. It entered his nose, his mouth, his ears, and if he hadn't closed them it probably would have gone into his eyes. He coughed and sputtered for minutes. And when he opened his eyes, The Ghost was standing there.

When Dick tried to show his friend The Ghost, they chided him for making things up. The Ghost is imperceptible to everyone who does not have acute perception of Focus. It has no smell, it makes no sound to anyone but Dick, its completely invisible to most eyes, and if you walk through it you'll only feel a little chilly.

The Ghost has long lost its ability to physically interact with the world, along with most of its sentience. Whoever The Ghost was, its lost most of his sapience. The Ghost is very perceptive and good at spotting things others might overlook. This can be as mundane as an overlooked piece of evidence, or a supernatural as a warning about something innocuous. But The Ghost rarely communicates these warnings and observations with words. Sudden images and wordless sounds are common. The Ghost will also often gesture and point. When especially agitated The Ghost will howl, scream, or moan. On rare occasions it has said singular words. These one-word statements always either signal something of great danger or great value...

Gear preference: Dick's personal weapon is an Colt Army Model 1860 revolver. Its a family heirloom with a lot of meaning and history to it. While he allowed some slight improvements to it, he has adamantly refused all attempts to convince or coerce him to use a more modern weapon. He's also a big fan of smoking paraphernalia. Never uses any lighter but his personal engraved lighter.

I'm not too strict. I prefer at least a short paragraph per post, but sometimes when there's a conversation happening or you have your character react to something, you can get away with some short posts.

You can post the character you've created right here in this thread
Aight thanks, I'll work on mine later!
