Flames licked the sky above their heads, the stars casting their nightly spell over them. In the middle of the huddle a man with bright red hair stood among the mass of children, all of which were becoming of age. His intense green eyes took in their meek faces, onyx colored horns poking out from the top of his head. Wren scooped his hand into the roaring flames, causing them to settle as a ball of red licked his perfectly preserved skin. Silence fell over the small huddle, parents and elders settling along the outskirts of the ring. It seemed the whole village was listening in on the tale that would be spoken once every 18 years.
"In the beginning..." he started, bare feet poking at the coals in front of him. "Mother earth and Father sky met along the horizon, and the first human was born." He threw the orange sphere in the air, allowing it to scatter above their heads, small specs of burning ash falling around them, becoming cold before it touched their skin. "Loneliness eventually settled along her heart, and she wished to bear a child. She called to the gods, asking for the gift of a companion. Something to hold and cherish." Grabbing a handful of dirt he let the grains slip between his fingers. "So, Father Sky bestowed upon her a man." He took a few moments, staring at the young faces. "Unsatisfied, she pleaded to the stars for a child she could call her own. A Babe that could grow and learn from her own mistakes, one that could carry humanity through the ages." By this time, the eldest had sat down, his face level with the students that surrounded him. "Afraid the humans would become greedy, the gods gave them only one option; to take a life in order to gain one. The couple were distraught, their feelings towards living beings being the same as the spirits in the trees. However, the need for another to call her own was strong, and when a woman sets her mind to something..." He made a soft sigh, as if everyone around had the slightest idea of the power a woman could have if she wanted something bad enough.
Some of the village hunters laughed lightly, only to stop abruptly, for their mates glare had bit deep.
"The first demon to be slain was a Dragon. The mates battled for many days and many nights, each chipping away at the creatures scales. Fire and earth were scattered among the trees, but they never quit."
A hand raised in the air, belonging to a soft featured girl, her eyes icey blue. Long ringlets of black hair fell around her face, causing her pale skin to look even more so. "You were the first born." She pointed out, her voice soft. Her cheeks were splashed with a tinge of red, the cold air biting deep. Raven glanced around her, the young taking in her words and quickly applying it to the present. Eyes widened.
"Correct, Raven, I am the son of the first humans." He cleared his throat, standing again. A jittery air about him caused a small wave of discomfort, but was dampened as he continued to speak. "They fought the beast for many days, and in the end triumphed." He stared down at the girl who had spoken, taking in the pattern of dark lines that ran parallel to her cheekbones, tattoos given to her on her 18th summer. "Burying the bones, they waited a hundred years. In the end digging the remains up and burning them. Does anyone know why?"
Another hand shot up, light grey skin belonging to another becoming-of-age known only by his blackened eyes and short temper. Selix spoke around a mouth full of sharp teeth, small dots embedded along the sides of his head indicating he'd also turned 18 in the last few months. "Burning the dead releases their soul, and in the case of mating, it provides a spirit-animal for the child."
"And the child will be given abilities from that animal on it's eighteenth birth-night!" A girl blurted out, sharp yellow eyes pinned on the eldest, thick straight blond locks framing her strong face. A forked tongue fell from between her teeth as she spoke. A solid red line from the bottom of her lip, down her neck and splitting off in two directions at her collarbones, another indicator she was of age.
"Very good, Piper, but next time why don't you let me finish the tale, there are many children here have never heard of our origins."
"Why do you speak of it still?" Selix asked, pure black hues reflecting the dancing colors in the center. "The forest has made its wishes known. We've taken too much from the trees, and soon the gods will be enraged by our greed."
"Don't frighten the young." Raven spat, her hand flying into the back of her brother's head. She had large black wings, only they had been tucked tightly against her back until now, her feathers ruffled with anger.
