The Danger in Divergent Love

A loud bell and some shouting signaled the start of the day. Ryder heard his parents already up and moving about, and he rolled out of bed before one of them would come banging on his door. “Are you on patrol today?” his mother asked as soon as he walked out of his room. “Yeah,” he replied. “I’m stationed near the Amity border. That’s where they normally put the newbies,” he snorted. Ryder wasn’t an “official” Dauntless yet. He had just turned seventeen a few days ago, but he was still waiting for the Choosing Ceremony. Of course, he intended to stay in Dauntless- at least, he hadn’t had any reason to think otherwise at this point.

Ryder ate some toast and fruit, provided by Amity, no doubt. He jogged out the door, waving goodbye to his parents. Other black shirts lined the streets, most of them running to their designated positions or duties for the day. It seemed like the Dauntless were always running, but they never ran away from anything- always toward it.

“Hey!” a hand clapped Ryder’s shoulder. The boy twitched a little. His shoulder was newly tattooed and still stung a little bit. Ryder looked over to see his friend James running beside him. “Are you stoked for patrol?” he laughed. “I mean, it’s cool we get to do stuff even if we’re not fully initiated yet, but Amity? Nothing would ever happen there,” James chuckled. Ryder shook his head. “Nothing ever happens at any of the factions. That’s how it’s supposed to be,” he reminded his friend. Within each faction, it was peaceful because everyone shared the same goals and mindset. Conflicts were rare because of the political system set in place. Dauntless was to protect that peace, but they rarely expected anything unusual to happen. “Well at least the Amity are nice, not snobby like a lot of Erudites,” Ryder shrugged.

The two boys joined a small group of others from their class to wait for the train. Several of the Dauntless leaders were to accompany the students on the job, since they couldn’t be trusted to be completely on their own yet. James and Ryder grew quiet as they stood with the others; the Dauntless leaders always looked strict, and you could never tell when one of them was in a bad mood and could snap at the slightest infraction. “Everyone, prepare to board!” one of the leaders instructed. One by one, each of the Dauntless started running and then jumped into open cars. Ryder had done it about a hundred times before, so it was basically second nature.

“When we arrive at the Amity border, we’ll assign you to different posts. A few of you will actually go inside the faction, but just remember why you’re here. You’re here to protect the peace, so don’t disturb anyone as they go about their daily tasks. Should a conflict arrive, you are to notify one of us immediately. Do not deal with the conflict yourself. Is that understood?” one of the leaders addressed the students. The class nodded.

After they all hopped the train, one of the leaders motioned for Ryder to follow her. “You’ll be posted inside, by one of the largest Amity fields. There will be a lot of people farming there but I don’t suspect any trouble, so just do your job and let them do theirs. I’ll be back to relieve you in a few hours.” Ryder nodded and followed the leader to his station before she left to instruct his other classmates. Ryder looked out across the large field, a bit surprised at how serene and vastly different it was from his home in Dauntless.
