Fantasy The Chernobyl leftovers

William had left the hospital, only a few minutes ago. He was now standing by an old car with a cigarette inbetween his lips, leaning a bit on the back of the car. The mood in this town felt different, it felt tense. The night sky was darker than ever, the only thing lighting up this place was the pale ligt from the fullmoon and a few stars shining from above. Many people would call this night beautiful, but William had always been stuck here, he couldn't find the beauty in a lonely town like this. Out of nowhere, his vision blurred. It blinked from black to white. Then, a blurry picture appeared in his mind. What the picture showed, he didn't know, but something told him that it was a person. The picture in his mind caught fire in one of the corners, then burned up completely. The only thing left in his hallucination was bright flames covering most of his vision. William breathed heavily, almost hyperventilating. He put his hands in his hair and pulled the strands of black hair in an attempt to calm himself.

Harry always liked to think of himself as a reasonable man... that he could always be reasoned with in a calm and polite matter. But as he stood at his post carving up another Mutated Rat he had to restrain himself. The building he and his associates had set up in this time was part of an apartment complex at one point. The building right alongside the road was where they brought all the meat after catching it. Cleaned it in a tub of water located in the courtyard, gutted and diced it inside the building's small mess hall, then distributed through the ramshackle stalls set up on the road out front.

His arms were the perfect cleavers, but that didn't help him with the yelling outside. He didn't hate his brother-in-law, but damn it he made that so very... very... hard.

...................................................

Outside near the stalls, a massive man of bulk and anger gestured for the several critical mutants nearby to continue yelling.

"That's it! That's the kind of noise they want to restrain with their bullshit!!!" The man yelled to the spurs of his peers "They want to restrain it with fear, they think they can cause US fear with their little metal toys and their worthless opinions!!!"

A clawed mutant had begun clapping in the small crowd as well, using the back of her hands in order to keep from maiming herself.

"We sit here in our slums trying to survive, yet they encroach! Trying to force us from the very homes they crammed us into with their ignorance! Why must we suffer more!?! Have we not trudged through every lick of hell possible already?!? Do we not deserve rest?!?"

The agreements from the crowd caused the man to chuckle lightly in his gruff voice.

"But no, they'll never learn... never ever... because we are different." The man paused "Because they know we're better than they ever could be with their inferior genetics. Take back the city, take back your lives, take back the city, take back your pride!"

He was able to spur the crowd into chanting it as well, and gestured for them to get louder when he felt a smaller hand on his shoulder.

He spun around fist ready to cave in the ground when the air shimmered and a small man appeared.

Damn Enrique and his chameleon skin.

"Eh, Listen Butch man. Harry and the boys don't have anything against you expressing y'self bro." the little lizard-man said "But we would appreciate it quite a bit if you could keep it quiet out here so we can work."

Butch growled at Enrique ferociously before turning on his heels and trudging off into a random part of Gutter Town, passing various Critical Mutants on his way as the disgruntled crowd dispersed.

........................................

Harry watched from a window of the shop as Butch left, he wasn't going to convince himself that everything was going to be okay. When the chameleon man, Enrique, returned Harry made sure to thank him for risking Butch's rage. Kid's got guts if anything, Harry chuckled before returning to his work.

The Wolf watched, as the girl ran from him, full of terror. Something deep inside him felt a little.... hurt... by this, but he started following, curious. He wanted to ask a few questions, as to what a human was doing in these ruins, or why he could smell the taint upon her, when the changes stopped years ago. Maybe she was only minorly effected, as he had thought before? Maybe. He began sprinting forward, determined to not let her escape. He had to know. Maybe she had cured herself of the mutations? If so, he needed to get to her even more.

Thankfully, his mutations allowed him to go much faster than the average human, so, in around 30 seconds, he was almost right behind her. "WAIT! I only wish to speak with you!" he shouted, his voice coming out growly and rather intimidating, although he hadn't meant it to.

Apollo's eyes widened as the wolf got closer and closer to her. Her lungs burned, and her legs threatened to collapse from under her, but she kept running, fear and adrenaline keeping her upright. She didn't believe the words he said, it would be only too easy to kill her. The girl needed an escape. Apollo was so distracted with trying to come up with a plan that she didn't notice the piece of rumble on the ground that tripped her, sending her sprawling onto the broken gray asphalt. Her only weapon skid a few feet away from the girl, and her ankle screamed in pain.

Is this how I die? The girl asked herself, her mind racing with panic. Apollo sat up to face the wolf, her hands shaking from fear and pain. She hoped that this creature had told the truth, for her sake. The girl knew she couldn't stand her own in a fight, even with her levitation powers, not in this condition. "W-what do you want?" Apollo tried to make herself sound tough, but she doubted it made a difference.

He was on all fours, looking down at Apollo, who's knife had slid away. He knew she stood no threat at this point. "I only wish to speak with you," he said, "I pose no threat," he continued, as he looked at her leg that had apparently caused her fall. "Is your ankle broken?" he asked, leaning forward to sniff it. She could feel his heat simply radiate off of him, as she began to sweat.

"I'm most curious though, you appear to have no mutations, but I can scent The Taint upon you, why is that?" he asked, once she had responded to his ankle question, if she even did.

Apollo sat, shell shocked for a moment, then shook her head. "No...I think it's just twisted..." The girl wasn't comfortable with the wolf-man this close to her, but she didn't tell him so in fears of making him angry. Don't tell him anything. We can't trust him. "My-my mutations aren't visible." Apollo replied, her voice still shaking. A sharp pain rose from her ankle, an already weak point, and the girl clenched her fists to keep from crying out in pain.

I told you not to tell him.
What do you expect me to do, pretend I'm mute?! He already heard me speak! Do not address me like that. Apollo felt a smaller twinge of pain, but the voice did not bother her no more. The girl guessed that the voice knew she was right, but didn't want to admit it. Either way, it wasn't punishing her anymore.

Anna didn't push Alexis for any information about his story. She was just looking through various drawers and started making a little first aid kit to carry around with her. She looked at him when he said he was going to gutter town.

"I will stay here, in my condition it is better to stay away from any kind of dangerous situation."

She pulled open a drawer full of hospital gowns. She grabbed two, she knew she could find a purpose for them. She zipped the first aid bag closed and grabbed her pillow.

"It was nice meeting you, I will see you around."

She walked out the door and stopped in the hallway, she needed to decide where to go from here.

"Should I go back to the apartment building or, the office building."

She slowly walked down the hall, wondering which of her safe buildings to got to. As she walked outside she looked up at the moon and stars. She rarely went outside and it was nice seeing all of the stars and the moon. She noticed a figure in the distance and be lined it to the apartment building. She knew her footsteps could be heard but, did not want the figure to see her. She quickly settled down in one of the old apartments.

He nodded not liking to leave her alone but not wanting force her otherwise, Gutter Town was no place for a girl like her and he was not the right person to protect her. He watched her leave keeping watch out the window for her until she entered one of the apartment building before looking back at his own issues. He found an old changing room in the hospital, used for doctors to change in their coat or some such and went to work. He removed his mask and began moving a bandage covering the left half of his face, the pain of the act was the same as when he got the wound making him almost howl in pain. He caught sight of himself in the mirror and turned his head away almost immediately, he knew he was not as bad as other found in the area but he could stand the sight of himself. He was ugly and horrid as any other freak out there. He put disinfected and ointment from his pack on to the wound which burned greatly as he hold himself from screaming, then placed the bandages on top. Then he took a moment break for he knew he had to this for the rest of his body.

He nodded, looking down at her leg. "You should be fine in a couple days, then.... maybe less," he guessed, as he looked up at her face, noticing her discomfort. He remembered his own mutations, and stepped back. "Yours aren't visible?" he asked, curiously. "I've never seen something like that before...... if... if you don't mind me asking, what are your mutations?" The girl's face looked conflicted, as if she was..... fighting herself. It was probably him, she probably thought he'd kill her or something, so he stepped back again, putting a bit of distance between them, before looking at the ground, in an attempt to appear non-threatening. "Before all of this happened," he said, still looking at the ground, "People used to call me Kurt. What did they call you?"

Apollo took a second to answer, as if she was debating what she should tell him. "I can heal," She told him. "And make objects levitate for a short time..." Come to think of it, she hadn't been able to do that in a few days. It must have been because she hadn't eaten for awhile. Not that the girl was telling him , of course. Just as she didn't tell him of the voice. She didn't need people thinking she was crazy.

"They called me Apollo. What are your mutations Kurt? Besides your appearance." The girl said awkwardly. Apollo was beginning to feel a bit calmer around this wolf man. Perhaps it was because he hadn't slashed her throat yet. Don't let your guard down. It's not like I trust him.
