Multiple Settings The Aspirant

One Sleepless Night
  • official clown business

Okay so our name is Piss and we are the Mafioso

Corilyn blinked her eyes a few times, getting used to the sudden brightness of the study. Though it was always candlelit, stepping in from the moonless sky wasn't nearly as pleasant for the eyes as it used to seem, especially since they would have preferred to rest themselves in bed during this time. Corey was used to it, of course. She'd had insomnia all her life and there didn't seem to be a cure in the world, magical or physical, for such an ailment.

After adjusting herself to the brightness, Corey sauntered over towards the center of the study, her eyes focused on the single object she and Anor had discovered last week. Resting on a simple wooden pillar in front of her was a crystalline orb somewhat larger than her head, occasionally shimmering multiple colors. Though Corey had spent several days attempting to study the orb and discover its properties, her efforts were almost entirely fruitless and she eventually decided it was little more than an expensive household decoration, meant for an ancient hoard or a mansion of some kind.

Tonight, however, the orb had called out to her, sought her out by name. As reluctant as Corey was to be summoned to such a mysterious object, her insomnia had been acting up this time and she couldn't think about anything else, so she eventually found herself in the study, staring at the orb as it suddenly shifted from abstract colors to definite images - images of people she had met in passing, but never got to know too well.

Three images flashed in her mind at once - an ambitious ranger, an enigmatic drakir... and her younger self.

The Orb called out to her again, as if expecting a choice to be made between the three.

    A. The Aspirant
A fresh face to Chorral, Arich Liordei has finally done away with his training and has but one step to take before he becomes a fully-fledged Rider, something he considers a stepping stone towards fulfilling all his other aspirations in life.

Before he can take the step forward, however, one of the more senior Riders, David Ars, has personally assigned him what he considers a small 'task' - retreive an artifact of value from the Maison Creue and leave without making any unnecessary noise.

Having accepted the task, Arich now finds himself alongside David and atop Anor as they fly towards the Maison, briefing the fledgling rider on what they can expect to find at their destination.

He'll need to make use of all he's learned so far if he doesn't want to bollocks this one up.

    B. Blissful Recollections
Corilyn nearly jumped back in excitement upon seeing the snowed-in cabin, one of the only things she really remembered from her youth. Would she really be granted the chance to revive her own memories at this very moment?

The secrets behind Corey's younger days are guarded even from her closest friends, but today she's willing to reveal the blissful days of her ten year old self to the few she's known for years. Already, it's starting to come back to her.

A rider since birth, gifted with animals since her earliest days in this world, little Corilyn can be seen retreiving a stick from her faithful friend Kalemu, and throwing it to begin the cycle once again. Her other companions, Xalphin and Nials, are just out of view, but she knows one thing:

They'll be waiting for her to come back and pay the three of them one last visit.

    C. The Nameless Wanderer
Corilyn is well-acquainted with those who appear more lizard or dragon-like than human, but even so she had to admit the red and blue fellow she met a couple years back was a complete enigma.

He doesn't seem to remember anything of his past - his name, his skills, and the perspective of life he's gained over the years don't truly belong to him. How he even came to be associated with the Riders is another mystery altogether.

What Corey sees in front of her isn't the fellow's true past, but what appears to be the aftermath of his apparent amnesia. Face down in the middle of a deep forest, the wanderer has yet to rise from his coma.

Will this brief recollection be enough to uncover any clues about his past life?

each character has their own unique items, traits, & skills that are revealed at the beginning of the quest.
for now, you'll simply have to read the summaries to see what kind of personality one might have, as that affects the quest choices.

    The Aspirant Awakens
  • Arich Liordei used to be a familiar face around Chorral, but soon after his induction he was already off on his own, seeking a larger role in the world with his newfound companion. Corilyn didn't quite recall what happened during that time, as most of her years among the Riders were spent travelling the world with her close friends. It felt odd that she couldn't remember, though - felt more like empty space in her mind rather than simple forgetfulness.

In any case, Corey had made up her mind. As the image of Arich flashed across her vision, she clasped the orb tightly with both hands, prepared for whatever the outcome might be.
The orb began quietly humming and vibrating with energy, and soon Corey's hands and arms followed suit. She could feel the energy preparing to flow through the rest of her body, but it instead concentrated itself on the dream pendant hanging from her neck, twisting the shades of its purple gemstone ever so slightly.

She wasn't looking, though. The study around was rapidly reduced to a blur as dizziness and lightheadedness began to take over Corey, who closed her eyes in acceptance of the sleep that would soon overcome her. A few seconds later, she was sprawled over on the floor of the study, in a deep sleep.

When Corilyn awakens, she will be watching the world from the eyes of Arich Liordei, the Aspirant.
and... she'll be waking up soon. sometime today, let's hope.

    The Errant [1-1]
  • Wake up, Arich. We are almost there!

The ranger shot up in alarm, glancing frantically at the night sky around him before coming back to his senses.
"Fucking hell, Anor," Arich complained, raising his voice against the wind. "Is this what I can expect to wake up to every day when I get my buddy?"

After receiving no response from the dragon or the man in front of him, Arich decided not to push it and check on the gear he had brought with him, making sure nothing was missing. Afterwards, he ran his hand through the short brown hair on his head, feeling it whipping backwards from the breeze.

The ranger took a quick glance at his travelling companions. The first was Anor, a traditional dark green dragon who seemed to always be nearby whenever Corey or David were around. Though he was large enough to carry half a dozen riders without issue, Arich had rarely seen him do more than stand around at Chorral, keeping watch over the riders' day-by-day activities or conversing with his friends.

Arich looks back up towards David, a man with a slicked back head of brown hair who wore little more than a white woolen tunic, topped with a brown vest and simple black pants. His face gave away his expression, eyebrow raised expectantly as the ranger silently finished his once-over.

"Right, David," Arich quickly began, "I'm awake now. So, how much longer until we're there?"

"We'll be at the maison in ten minutes," David replied. "I'm hoping you remember what you're supposed to do when you get there."

"Oh, yeah, of course," the ranger answered. "Get inside the mansion, grab the thing, and dragon away before the host realizes they've been made."

"Right, right. So you remember exactly what it is you were supposed to retrieve, I'm assuming?"

Arich might've forgotten this particular detail of the briefing, but he decided he would take a crack at it anyway.

    "Of course I do, David-"

    A. "-you wanted me to get an orb or something for Corey, right?"

    B. "-how could I forget about the amulet you were looking for?"

    C. "-they're experimenting with an arrow that fucks dragons right up!"

    D. Mentally reach out to Anor for backup. He probably overheard the briefing, right?

    Better check on my stuff!

    The Errant [1-2]
  • For a brief moment, Arich considered taking the safer route and having Anor bail him out. But he was pretty sure he knew what he was saying time.

"-how could I forget about the amulet you were looking for? It's the sinister-looking one - black and gold, right?"

As David nodded in confirmation, Arich sighed internally, relieved he had remembered everything this time.

"Yes, that's the one," David said. "If you know exactly what you're looking for, this shouldn't be much more than a simple errand. Once you're inside the mansion, it'll be all you, and Anor should be able to give you the rest of the details from the sky."

There is one more, very important thing you must know, Arich, a deep voice spoke within the fledgling's head. Corilyn wished for me to tell you not to interact with the artifact in any way, aside from carrying it. Do not wear it, and do not press the onyx.

    Why not?
Arich asked. What happens if I do?

Do not interact with the amulet,
Anor's voice repeated. The ranger waited a few moments to see if anything else would be said, but after the warning his mind had gone silent for the time being.

"Awfully serious fellow today, isn't he?" Arich wondered aloud. David turned back towards him, curious.

    "Serious? About what?"

"Forget about it," Arich responded dismissively. He couldn't stand how oblivious the man was to every mental conversation he'd been a part of. It probably explained why he never saw David alone when he was riding, since it seemed like he always needed someone to translate thoughts midflight.

Arich didn't feel the need to make a big deal out of this fact, so he decided to lean back and relax for the next several minutes of the flight. Perhaps it wouldn't be too bad of an idea to ask a question or two, and strike up some quick conversation before the three reached the maison.

What does Arich have the most interest in asking about?

    A. Really, now, Arich has seen Anor and most of the other companions speak their mind to entire gatherings of Riders at once, and yet David seems to be oblivious to it all. Why, though?

    B. Ask where the leader of the Riders has been. She's been gone for a week or so and Arich had never gotten the chance to hear why.

    C. Ask about the amulet, and come up with a few guesses with David and Anor on what the it might do if one were to actually wear it or touch its jewel.

    D. Relax, no need for all these extra details. Just ask the two how their friends back at Chorral are doing.

    The Errant [1-3]
  • "So, how's everything going for your friends back at Chorral?" Arich inquired. "Seems like they haven't had much time to relax the past couple weeks, with half the Riders' best on holiday and all."

"You're right about that," David agreed with a sigh. "The most senior members are off in the desert looking for something, and that's left the rest of us to take care of things here.

"Corey has had her hands absolutely full with pretty much every dragon and gryphon in Chorral, and she works nonstop, even in her sleep. I worry about her sometimes, but Anor is always with her and he keeps telling me things will be fine."

Your concern is appreciated, Anor told Arich when later asked, but sleepless nights have not befallen Corilyn for the better of a year. She will be fine.

"Sounds like she'll do alright," Arich assured David. "She never seems to really sleep, in my opinion, but she's damned good with dragons which explains why she wants to be around them all the time. What about your other friend, though?"

"Cenephar can handle himself, without a doubt. The three of us have known him for several years, and we've seen his fighting skill firsthand. I don't think he would have taught you personally, but I'm sure you've seen him showing off his warrior skills to the Riders once or twice." David sighed wistfully. "That's pretty much us right there. Four friends who know each other far better than any of the other Riders."

    _________________________

After a few minutes of relaxation, Anor dipped below the clouds and fog to reveal the destination of their flight: the Maison Creue, just an hour or two from the nearest city. It was a fairly large estate, with a wide two-story cobble and a well-tended courtyard, hedges and all. More importantly, though, Arich noticed the mansion was fully-lit, with carrages and horses bordering the front of the courtyard.

"They're having a party, aren't they?" David quietly asked to himself. "Too bad Anor and I aren't dressed for the occasion."

A moment later, the dragon had flown to a shrouded forest a few minutes west of the mansion, landing quietly and gently lowering himself to let Arich dismount. The ranger turned towards David, waiting for him to do the same, but no movement was made.

"I thought you were coming into the mansion with me," Arich said. "If you can't talk to Anor while you're in the air I don't see how you could help out at all."

David shrugged in response. "I'll just move the saddle closer to his head. We can manage it up there."

Anor appeared to make a scowl, and his rider sighed, dismounting to make the adjustment. It was clear this change would put both of them in a rather uncomfortable position when they took flight again. The dragon's blue eyes regarded your own, taking on a serious shade.

"Remember," Anor growled, "do not wear the amulet, or activate it. Bring it to David as soon as you find it."

David's addition was to "Do it however you like, but keep the noise to a minimum. If people figure out what you're up to, then it'll be a long night for all of us."

Before Arich gets going, he responds:

    A. "No problem. Get in, get the amulet, and get out without anyone realizing. Should be a cakewalk."

    B. "You sure you don't want to tag along, David?"

    C. "Can you tell me a little more about the maison before I get moving?"

    D. "What's your policy on killing people?"

    The Errant [1-4]
  • David nodded at the response. "Based on what we know about the maison, it shouldn't be too difficult. We'll leave you to it, then."

Arich shielded his eyes from the blasts of wind as Anor, with a few beats from his wings, took off suddenly and forcefully, becoming hard to make out in seconds. Then he turned towards the direction of the Maison Creue, beginning the short trek towards it.

Several minutes later, the ranger broke through the small expanse of forest to find himself at the edge of the courtyard, facing the western side of the mansion. It was an impressive sight, cobbled from white bricks and ending in a rooftop of vibrant red. Arich had little desire to live in such a place, but he still whistled to himself as he took in the magnificent sight.

After spending a few more minutes admiring the mansion, Arich took some time to circle the courtyard, noting all the potential entrances to the place and taking notice of two stewards at the front of the courtyard entrance, seemingly there to watch over the several carrages and horses parked nearby. Other than their red attire and smoking pipes, Arich noticed they stood far enough from the entrance that they wouldn't see anyone climb over the hedges and walk over to any of the mansion's entrances. Apparently, no one had ever tried doing so.

Alright, Arich. You've got this for sure, but just in case you'd better go over your options here.

    A. Silently make for the front door and consider other options from there.

    B. There's no one watching the back door, of course. That'll be the most subtle way inside.

    C. Case the mansion until discovering a window without any activity behind it and try that.

    D. There really is no need to do this, but decide to head to the front of the courtyard and see what the two stewards are up to.
Each option has a variety of additional plans to go along with it, so you really can't go wrong with whatever choice you make. Consider the possibilities and make your decision.

  • It didn't take long for Arich to pick out the most ideal choice from what he had. A minute later, he found himself against the back of the two-story mansion, with a small back door before him.

There was still plenty of moonlight to spare, so Arich took a few moments to put his ear to the door, listening for any indication of a nearby presence. Other than the muffled sounds of conversation and eccentric music, it didn't sound like there was anything directly behind the door.

Arich was confident he wouldn't run into any problems once inside, but he figured it would be worth considering what else he could do while he was at the back door.

What's the next step in Arich's plan?

    A. The door has a keyhole on it, so bump the lock with those picks and head inside.

    B. Quietly knock on the door and see if anyone answers.

    C. Try the conspicuous route instead, and take the front door. Going subtle is too risky here.

    D. Actually, this might work better... (Write-in.)

    Hmm...

    The Errant [1-6]
  • Arich weighed the options in his head, and the more he thought about it the riskier the back door seemed. He had enough time to make it to the front door, but he was pretty worried the stewards outside had already seen-

Arich, Anor interrupted from inside the ranger's head. Neither of the two in red are paying any attention to the maison. Approach from any angle except the front of the courtyard, and neither you nor the guards will take notice of each other. You have not been revealed yet.

Peeking at the courtyard entrance from behind the mansion, Arich could indeed confirm that the stewards were not in sight, and would have never seen him enter from the west. With the back door out of the question, he decided to make his way around to the front, ducking under lit windows and adjusting his clothing using light from the lanterns. He didn't look half bad for what he assumed would be a party of some kind.

After taking a few more seconds to make sure he looked alright, Arich pushed one of the front doors open and stepped inside into the white light of the foyer.

The foyer of the mansion, white as the light shining from its bright decor, was far emptier than he expected. The grand staircases in front of him surrounded a small desk attended by a steward, dressed in a red outfit similar to the ones outside. He nodded in greeting after taking in Arich's presence.

To the left of the ranger is a bench, seating a slim woman with long red hair and a redder dress, accented in gold. She didn't seem to notice Arich at all, as she was more occupied with what she had in each of her hands, a small flask and a simple book.

Haven't even stepped inside the actual party yet, and there's already something to keep Arich busy:

    A. Approach the desk. From the entrance, Arich can see an empty ledger and an assortment of paperwork. Of course, he might have something to ask the steward as well.

    B. Stride over to the woman and make yourself known. She's probably just another guest, but perhaps you'll hear something useful.

    C. Walk past the steward's desk and enter the galleria, where all the music and commotion is coming from.

    D. Seems the staircase is off-limits. Better try something else. (Write-in.)
The steward will bar you from entering the second floor if you approach the stairs, but you've got your hands full with the other three options anyway.

    Don't worry, they're concealed.

  • Despite his best efforts, Arich remains exposed to the music coming from the galleria.

The steward looks up from his own paperwork, notices Arich approaching, and greets him with a look of concern on his face.

"Welcome to the Maison Creue, sir. Is there any reason you're two hours late to the party?"

Arich nodded. "Just got lost on the road is all. From where I live, it takes a good day to get here by carrage, and I haven't been near the city in a long time."

"Of course, sir. Well, there's still a few hours to go, so feel free to enter the galleria whenever you like."

"So there's no need for me to sign this piece of paper here, based on the lack of names?"

The steward took one look at the ledger, seemingly noticing it for the first time, and tucked it into one of the desk drawers. "Our mansion is technically open to the public tonight, though we did send out 'invitations' favoring those who would arrive for the sake of lightening their purses. I presume you are only here for the food and dance, though."

Arich took a closer look at the desk, which was littered with well-inked papers and illustrations, likely meant to be read by visitors.

It might be worth observing everything here in detail. He had plenty of time to kill.

    A. Read it all. The papers illustrate various artifacts and describe them in small detail.

    B. "Mind telling me a little about the owners of this fine mansion?"
If you're curious about the woman reading in the foyer, mention it and Arich will be sure to ask about her as well.

    C. "You sure the real party isn't happening on the second floor? I'd hate to miss out on that."

    D. Step into the galleria and see what the party's all about.

    E. Turn towards the woman and stride towards her with a greeting.

  • Despite his best efforts, Arich remains exposed to the music coming from the galleria.

Arich took a few of the papers in his hand, glancing over each of them one by one. An arcane dagger here, and a dream necklace there, among the several trinkets and heirlooms that would apparently be on auction in half an hour. None of it interested him until one of the last sheets caught his eye.

In the ranger's hands was a piece of paper depicting one of the strangest, most intricate amulets he had seen. Built from what appeared to be a mix of blood rubies and gold, the chain appeared less than comfortable for wearing. The centerpiece, which appeared to be some kind of letter in an unknown language, had a black jewel inlaid in the round hole left by the letter.

That must be the amulet, Anor's voice could be heard saying. Corilyn will decipher it if we can bring it back to Chorral.

"Wanna tell me what this one does?" Arich asked the steward, noticing the lack of any description on the paper.

The man shook his head in response. "You'll have to ask it's owner. All I can tell you is they've been trying to get rid of it for a while, perhaps passing it off onto someone else."

"Well, the guy's gotta be around somewhere," Arich pressed on. "Could you point me in their direction so I could talk to them, then?"

"You'll want to speak to mistress Fiola Creue." The steward motions towards the woman on the bench. "She's Eran's daughter, and lacks much interest in parties, so it's no surprise rarely anyone recognizes tonight."

Arich nods his thanks and turns to approach the woman. After a few long strides, he's sitting on the bench next to her.

"Hello," he began. "Not much of a partygoer, I'm guessing?"

Fiola looked up from her thin book with an eyebrow raised, and responded in a soft voice.

"Is there something you wanted from me?"

    A. Ask her about the amulet, since she's the most likely person to know about it

    B. Try to get something going with Fiola. She's tipsy and might reveal something useful.

    C. Attempt a little small-talk with her while you take a closer look at her book and what she's wearing.

    D. No, these options won't do. You'd rather say this instead: (Write-in.)

  • Despite his best efforts, Arich remains exposed to the music coming from the galleria.

"I figured it might be a lot nicer if we headed outside, away from all the noise and music. Surely, it's gotta be hard to concentrate with the party in the background."

Fiola held her gaze with Arich, this time with a sincere smile in her face. "Of course. But first, may I have your name?"

"Just call me Liam," the ranger quickly made up.

"Sorry, Liam, but I'm away from all the people for the reason. I've already heard this from several others in the past hour," Fiola stated, a little regretfully it seemed. "And with hardly any of the effort you were able to muster up. I'll take note of your suggestion and head outside, though."

Setting the flask down on the bench and putting her book inside a jingling handbag that was previously concealed, Fiola strode towards the front doors, taking slow and deliberate steps as she pushed past them and turned out of sight.

Arich shrugged. He couldn't expect things to go his way all the time. He would just have to find another route to the information he needed to find the amulet.

    What's next, then?

    A. Enter the galleria, enjoy the party a little, and look for information before the auction.

    B. Follow Fiola outside. It doesn't sound like she minds Arich's presence yet, so she should be fine with this.

    C. Ask the steward questions, just to pass the time, and learn more about the partygoers, the owner of the mansion, and the items being sold at the auction.

    D. The steward is alone in the foyer, and no one will notice if a more forceful approach is taken here.

  • The music is really quite much for Arich's tastes, a little louder than he can think.

After mentally informing Anor to keep tabs on Fiola, Arich heads past the steward's desk and pushes open the solitary door between him and the galleria.

The ranger is immediately faced with louder music, the vibrant colors from the dim lights all around the ceiling and walls, and the commotion all around the room. There are all kinds of well-dressed people around, wearing variations of casual and formal clothing. Some of them appear to be in the midst of dance while others are conversing or grabbing drinks from the miniature bar at the left of the room. Arich takes a piece of cheese from one of the steward's trays before moving forward, pretending to admire the various paintings on the walls.

At the front of the room appears to be a stage with several glass displays featuring almost all the artifacts that would be sold. Arich could see all of them from where he was, but it quickly became obvious the amulet he was looking for wasn't on display at all. He thought it was somewhat strange, considering how it was supposedly one of the items up for grabs as well.

This place certainly isn't short of ways to pass the time, so what should Arich do before people start preparing for the auction?

    A. Take a look at the artifacts anyway. Arich didn't bring enough money for an auction, but he hasn't seen some of these before and wants to know more about them.

    B. Go to the bar, get a drink, and see what the patrons are talking about. It'll be a lot easier to just overhear them, though Arich may asking a question or two.

    C. Quietly head back outside and see what Fiola's doing. Anor says she is currently behind the mansion.

  • As he approached the stage, Arich could see there were plenty of interesting items available for the auction, each one contained within their own glass case. He also noticed some of the partygoers opening up the cases and taking a look at the items, grasping them in their hands and getting a feel for the various enchantments each of them had. He thought he wouldn't have enough money to join in earlier, but as it turned out the starting bids on some of these items weren't nearly as ludicrous as he'd expected them to be.

At the far left of the stage, Arich noticed what he assumed to be the musicians who were playing earlier. They had stopped to take a brief look at a lute, testing out its notes and talking about what a hit it would be for their next performance. The instrument didn't sound too bad, but the ranger wasn't sure he wanted to stick around for much longer once they got their hands on it.

There were several other items on display, and Arich spent some time handling them all. Jewelry seemed to be the most common thing on the stage, with signets, bracelets, and a necklace that caught his eye. The ranger wasn't that interested in the rest of the jewelry, but he knew a dream necklace when he saw one. Almost all the senior Riders had one along their neck at all times, from what Arich had seen, and he figured it would be quite the shame if he wasn't among that number within the year.

Arich skimmed through the rest of the items, but the rest were either too expensive or not as interesting, and he noted only a few additional pieces before a man with red vestments with a sleek black haircut along his head and face made the announcement that the auction would begin very shortly. Soon enough, a small crowd of partygoers and collectors had gathered all around the stage, awaiting the opportunity to take one of the many valuable objects home with them. The man, who introduced himself as Eran Creue, made a short speech expressing his appreciation to those who attended, and spoke about the maison itself, which he had acquired exactly a year ago. Arich tuned most of Eran's speech out, listening for any news from Anor and waiting for the moment they would reveal the object of his search.

Still, some of the items at the auction seemed promising. Perhaps it's worth trying...
Options that present clear risk have the level of risk shown if Arich or his companions know just how difficult it will be. When these options are taken a twenty-sided die will be rolled to determine the result. Rolling the lowest or highest possible number may yield interesting results.

    A. Arich has barely enough money to try getting one item, if he's lucky:
    1. Make room for a
    latest
    scented candle (modest).

Aside from smelling really nice, it lets Arich clear his mind, making him immune to mental attacks.
    2. Try to get a
    latest
    dream necklace (chancy).

These aren't rare in cities where magic is common knowledge, but Arich wants to see what all that dreamworld business is about.
    3. Bid for an
    latest
    altuni cloth (tough),

one of the most dangerous clothing enchantments. If the wearer would pass out or die, the cloth will break and cause this to happen to an ally instead.
    4. It's going to be the
    latest
    warp blade (high-risk) for sure.

Simply hitting something with this dagger allows the wielder to warp a short distance.
    B. Don't take part in the auction, and just wait it out until they get to the last part.

    The Errant [1-12]
  • The auction kicked off quickly and efficiently, with Eran or one of his stewards stating the initial bid and a few of the collectors firing off higher and higher bids until someone gave in. They had started with the cheapest items first, and after about ten minutes of bidding, things had started to slow down a little once they reached the warp blade, the halfway point in the auction.

Arich was confident he would easily be able to secure the knife for himself, and once Eran announced the starting number he quickly responded with a slightly higher one. As a flurry of other bids came in from the crowd, Arich found himself caught up in the rush of bidding and decided he would be victorious at any cost. Whenever a bidder spoke up, the ranger responded in a louder voice. This continued for several minutes until the others inevitably gave in, and Arich stepped up to the stage, leaving what he assumed was enough gold in a small bag on the podium as a steward presented the dagger to him.

As the ranger walked away from the stage, he took a little time to admire his newfound piece. It was a graceful-looking weapon, which appeared somewhat like a stiletto knife with a mahogany handle and a blade with arcane script faintly etched into it. Even if it hadn't come with the little enchantment Arich had sought it for, it still looked like it would make a decent weapon in a pinch.

He quickly looked up to see Eran standing in front of him, holding the bag of gold and an accusing stare against him.

"There something wrong here?" Arich asked, though he already knew the answer.

"Do you remember how much your final offer was, there?" Eran quietly inquired. After Arich confirmed the offer, he shook the bag lightly and continued. "This doesn't feel like two hundred twenty-six gold to you, does it? You didn't seem particularly intoxicated when you were going on your little bidding spree there, but I'll be lenient just this once. I'll let you hold on to the stiletto."

"You sure?" Arich said, with more than a hint of apprehension in his voice. "Then you'll let me hand it back over and we can forget about the mistake back there, right?"

Eran shook his head. "I'm afraid not, my friend. A deal has been struck here, and it would be in poor taste to go back on a purchase so soon. There is simply the matter of taking care of the rest of the payment. I have no doubt you are armed based on your appearance, so I simply ask that you reveal all your weaponry to me before I have one of the stewards search you in front of this crowd."

Arich sighed and pulled out the leather satchel where his arcane shortbow was kept, removing it and presenting it towards the man. When Eran simply continued to wait expectantly, he reached into his right pocket and pulled out his knuckledusters. He watched as Eran took both of the weapons, putting the knuckles in his vest pocket and examining the bow with great interest. Arich hoped the man would have no idea what he was looking at, but within a few seconds he had the bow unfolded and was testing out the conjured bowstring, which hummed a deep purple.

"Is that going to be enough?" Arich mumbled in a dejected tone.

"These will most certainly suffice, my good friend," Eran asserted with a smug grin. "Now, would you be quite gracious as to turn around and escort yourself outside the mansion?"

The ranger solemnly complied. Not wanting to make any hasty moves for the sake of his task, he was outside the front door of the mansion a few moments later, as the muffled sounds of music resumed. Immediately after the doors closed behind them, Arich kicked a nearby stone with as much force as he could muster.

"Bollocks!" he yelled, the mixture of anger and frustration evident.

Arich couldn't possibly go inside the mansion again, not with the risks involved. Fortunately, after a while, he had calmed down enough to assess his remaining options.

Perhaps he still has a chance to get something done tonight.

    A. Go behind the mansion where Fiola is - quietly. Who knows what she's been up to while Arich was inside?

    B. Go behind the mansion and immediately approach Fiola. There are a few questions that need to be answered.

    C. Take out some anger on one of Eran's stone fountains, and warp up to the roof of the mansion. It looks doable from here.

    The Errant [1-13]
  • After confirming with Anor that Fiola was still behind the mansion, Arich slowly walked around, keeping close to the walls and making sure the music would mask the sound of his footsteps. He peeked around the side of the mansion and saw the lady was simply leaning against the back wall, her arms crossed in deep thought. Once, she glanced around herself cautiously, but Arich was well hidden.

What had she been doing while Arich was inside?

She has been waiting, Anor answered, for some time. Whether she waits for a person, or for time to make it's course, I am not certain.

After a few seconds, Fiola began slowly walking towards the back hedge, likely aiming to leave the courtyard and do something interesting with whatever was in her handbag.

Arich has no intention of watching her leave.
Anor informs you he will be landing nearby, and that he does not quite see anything behind the courtyard at the moment.

    A. Just sneak behind Fiola as she leaves the courtyard.

    B. Sneak up close to Fiola - and try to take her handbag without being noticed. (high-risk)

    C. Walk towards Fiola and get her attention. You don't want her to get too far just yet.

    D. Walk towards Fiola, stab the grass, and warp right in front of her.

    The Errant [1-14]
  • Arich wasn't certain whether or not Fiola would be expecting someone beyond the courtyard, but what he was sure of was that she would provide something of value, either from her handbag or her own words. As he got closer, he could hear the familiar jingling sounds coming from the former. It seemed the lady didn't want to waste any time getting some distance from the mansion.

Just before Fiola could reach the hedge, Arich called out her name, and she turned to face him. The ranger gradually slowed to a stop, a short distance from the lady.

"How long have you been spying on me, Liam?" Fiola asked cautiously.

    A. "Hey, Fiola, mind if we skip the small talk? I know you have it."

    B. "I haven't done anything like that. I am curious, though - where are you headed?"

    C. "You must be joking, right? I left the mansion just a minute ago."

  • "You're joking, right? I left the mansion just a minute ago," Arich replied. "I didn't come here to waste money on an auction, so I decided to step outside until they were finished."

"Enough with the lies," Fiola spat. "It's an awful coincidence that you happened to stop me just before I had the chance to get over the hedge."

The ranger shook his head. "You're being really paranoid if you think it's not reasonable for someone to want to relax outside a little. Or sulk, in my case."

"There's a good reason for the paranoia," Fiola said, "but I'm not telling you any more. Just make sure I don't see you behind me once I'm past the hedge."

She turned around and began walking away in a hurry, and Arich took notice of her right arm, which was reaching for something within her dress.

Well, Arich definitely needs to do something here.

    A. Attempt to reason with Fiola. (Write-in.)

    B. Keep following Fiola and see if she's actually going to try something against Arich.

    C. If Fiola won't say anything, Arich will take matters into his own hands. Warp in front of her and make a threat. (chancy)

    D. Anor is supposedly hidden somewhere behind the hedge. Tell him to reveal himself, and pretend it's Arich's first time seeing him.

    The Errant [1-16]
  • Anor? Arich quickly thought out. Can I have you ready to jump out of the bushes when I need you?

    I will be ready,
the dragon answered. But I would wish to not reveal myself to anyone tonight, if you can avoid that.

Arich took a couple light steps forward before yelling "Wait, Fiola!"

She stopped just before the hedge, turning around to regard the ranger with a glare. "Please... just turn around and leave."

In the darkness, he could barely what the lady was reaching for just a few seconds earlier, but after a moment of silence he realized she was holding a sleek wand in her left hand. She swiftly raised it towards Arich, but made no attempt to conjure any sort of spell just yet. Still, the ranger wasn't totally sure what Fiola was capable of doing at this point, so he put his hands up in a defensive gesture and prepared himself to sidestep any spell she might launch.

"Take it easy, Fiola," Arich softly pleaded. "I didn't mean any harm at all tonight. When I saw you sitting on that bench inside, I just saw someone who was lonely, someone who could've done with the kind of company a party couldn't provide." Noticing Fiola wavering just slightly, he pressed on. "Just understand I didn't have any bad intentions or anything like that when I came here. I just wanted to talk and get to know you better, that's all. Can we still do that, Fiola?"

Perhaps it was the sincere tone of Arich or something else she heard, but Fiola sighed and decided to lower her wand.

"Fine..." she breathed out. "Fine. I suppose I should apologize for being so suspicious of you earlier, shouldn't I? And perhaps I should show you the reason I'm on edge."

She slowly opened up her handbag, reaching into it and pulling out the unique amulet Arich had recognized from the pictures he had seen at in the foyer. He saw the chain's mixture of gold and blood jewels, saw the strange symbol inlaid with an onyx gemstone. The ranger couldn't help but stare into the gemstone with fascination. It wasn't calling out to him, and it didn't seem to radiate any sort of energy from what he could see. He was certain that it represented something powerful, and his suspicion was confirmed when Fiola began speaking again.

"I won't tell you exactly what this is or what it does, but you can tell just by looking that it wasn't made with good intentions, right? Whatever it does, it's been troubling my father and his stewards for a couple months now. I'm going to find a way to get rid of it."

"Wasn't that supposed to be at the auction?" Arich asked. "What's your father going to do when he realizes the necklace was grabbed?"

"It doesn't matter," Fiola replied as she put the amulet back into her handbag. "He'll understand eventually."

Suddenly, she began to clutch her handbag tightly, her fingers whitening as the bag gradually took on the shape of the amulet inside. Realizing what she was doing a few seconds later, Fiola reached into her handbag again, casting it aside as she took out the amulet once again, grasping it in her hand. Arich turned his gaze higher to see if Fiola's expression had changed any, but it now it seemed as if the ranger's words had never reached her earlier. She raised her wand again, this time with an apologetic look on her face.

"I shouldn't have said anything to you, Liam," she whispered. "I didn't want anyone to know what I was about to do."

She sighed as ice began to emanate from her wand. "I hope you can forgive me for this."
If Arich fails to get through to Fiola, he will just have to take the force of the spell, which isn't going to hurt him that seriously. He doesn't want to risk letting a spell hit the mansion, for obvious reasons.

    A. Reveal Arich's identity and try to convince Fiola his colleagues have something better in mind for the amulet. (chancy)

    B. Counter-attack by hitting the spell with the warp blade, putting Arich right in front of Fiola. (chancy)

    C. Tell Anor to jump out, now. And stop Fiola while he's at it.

    D. There's gotta be another way. (Write-in. There may be risks involved depending on the action.)

  • Fiola had her wand pointed forward, prepared to launch an ice projectile, but Arich quickly made sure to have his thoughts known before she was finished speaking.

She's about to shoot a spell at me, Anor. Quick, jump her!

In the space of only a few seconds, Arich watched with a mixture of fake surprise and genuine awe as the titanic form of Anor leaped from his hiding spot behind the hedge, spreading both his wings fully and obscuring the brightly lit full moon behind him. Despite the great shadow that was cast and the ranger's shout of warning, Fiola was barely able to turn her head sideways before one of the dragon's clawed hands sent her to the ground with just enough force to avoid any actual injury. She began screaming at Arich for help, but Anor moved his head closer to issue a warning in a rough, deep voice.

"Another word from you, and you shall not watch the sun's ascent tomorrow, or ever again." Fiola immediately ceased her screaming, but still whimpered and trembled with fear as she couldn't turn her head enough to see what had attacked her.

Anor looked up, seeing the strange amulet had slid from the woman's grasp and fallen a few steps from where Arich was standing. In a meek voice, he had to pose the question: "What are you going to do to us?"

"Listen to my instructions carefully and you needn't discover what I am capable of," the dragon replied. "Do you see the amulet on the ground, boy?" Arich quickly nodded. "Send it past the hedge."

"No, Liam!" Fiola yelled out in despair. "You can't let him- agh!"

Arich quickly complied as Anor tightened his grip on his victim, grabbing the amulet and launching it far over the hedge. "Alright, done... are you going to let us go now?"

"I will grant both of you thirty seconds to run back to your little house," the dragon growled as he released his grip on Fiola. "If you fail or turn to face me, they will be the last thirty seconds of your life."

Fiola spent the first few seconds struggling to get back on her feet, and once she managed to do so Anor quickly spun around, swinging his tail against her head and sending her sprawling across the grass until she came to a stop near Arich. The ranger took one look at her head, seeing a slow trickle of blood, mouthed "Ouch," and took off through hedge, with Anor following behind.

"She's going to be fine, right?" Arich asked as he made his way towards where he assumed the amulet had landed.

You need not fear for the girl's life, Anor responded. He waited for Arich to look towards him and motioned downhill with his head, setting off in that direction. David will be waiting for us here.

Several seconds later, the two had gotten clear of the incline, and Arich could see David leaning against the tree. As he uncrossed his arms upon seeing their return, it became clear he was wearing the amulet.

"Wait, why are you wearing it!?" Arich exclaimed in surprise. "There clearly isn't something right with that necklace. Should I be worried, Anor?"

David held out a hand to stop Arich before he could say any more. "Relax, it's nothing you need to worry about. I'm wearing the amulet so no one else touches it by accident. It doesn't affect me, but save your question for later."

The rider clasped the amulet in his hands, feeling the onyx gemstone and turning it around to examine the five letters on the other side. "You did good finding this thing, Arich, even if you did need some help at the end there. I didn't get to see what happened inside, so do you mind telling me how well it went in there while I get this saddle on Anor?"

Arich thinks about what he wants David to hear before they fly back to Chorral.

    A. "Couldn't have been easy without Anor. Every task goes a lot smoother with a good pair of eyes in the sky."

    B. "Oh, nothing interesting happened inside the mansion. Fiola was the real key here."

    C. "Uh, well... about that bow Corey gave me..."

  • "Couldn't have been easy without Anor," Arich said as the dragon's eyes regarded him with acknowledgement. "Every task goes a lot smoother with a good pair of eyes in the sky."

David nodded approvingly at Arich's compliment. "For sure, Arich. He gets far more accomplished from way up there than he ever could down here, especially when it's just for small errands like these. I'd say the same goes for the rest of our fellow Rider companions around Chorral. As a matter of fact, we've all come together and found things go much more smoothly in general if they spend more time in the sky, rather than stay on the ground, trying to fight things or be scary. It might take a while before everyone else agrees with that strategy, though."

"Arich," Anor slowly began. "With what we have accomplished tonight, do you think yourself ready to become a Rider, when the time approaches tomorrow?"

"I think so," Arich responded. "I mean, I don't think anyone can be prepared to meet their companion for the first time. I don't even know who or what they're going to be yet."

"Well, it's perfectly fine to be nervous about it," David said. "You don't know who your lifelong friend is going to be until sunrise, though, so just don't worry about it for now. Dragon or gryphon, I'm sure you'll both get along well." He hesitated slightly, as if he was going to add another possibility from there, but he quickly dismissed it before moving on. "It's going to be the most exciting day you've had in years. It's gonna be good. And if I'm not doing a good job of convincing you of that, then Corey will for sure."

Arich realized he had almost forgotten to say something else, and quickly interjected "Erm, speaking of Corey..."

David paused his saddle work for a moment and turned around. "Yeah, Arich? Is there something you needed to tell me about her?"

"Uh, actually, it was nothing," Arich amended. "Don't worry about it. I'll tell Corey when we get back."

"Sure thing," David said. "I've just about got the saddle ready, so one more thing I want to let you know is that since you're done pretty well during this mission, there should be something nice waiting for you once we get back to Chorral. You should have plenty of spares in the morning if you there's something in particular you've been wanting to get for a while. Once you've taken care of that, we'll find out who your new friend will be at noon. For now, just get some rest while we make our way back. Think about your future, what you're going to be getting in the morning, and whatever else hits your mind. Now, let's head off before those guys back at the mansion start searching around for their necklace."

With the saddle fully tied on, David and Arich carefully mounted Anor as he stood up, spread his wings fully, and launched himself skyward. Before long, the three were above the clouds and on their way towards Chorral.

    The Errant [Conclusion]
  • Arich is one step closer towards his companion. Soon, ranger, soon.

Though Arich did manage to have some kind of interesting experience at the Maison Creue, he didn't exactly gain any innate knowledge, though he's found himself to not be that bad as far as subtlety goes.

At any rate, he would certainly remember to get something nice for himself at David's request, just to make sure he earned something as a result of his success. After assessing his options, Arich figured he could take a stroll around Chorral first thing in the morning, after he's decided what he's going to take with him.

What is Arich planning on getting himself in the morning?

    A. Have Arich's current armor added on to with a
    latest
chimera vest, a vast improvement from what he's currently wearing.

Chimera vests are highly protective vests worn by just a few riders. They are rare and difficult to make, requiring several dragon scales and the featherhide of a gryphon before they are magically woven together by someone Arich only knows as Syaeralith, who only ever sees and speaks to David for unknown reasons.
The vest will be able to stop several physical and magical attacks before they even get a chance to draw blood from Arich. It looks quite nice and is perfectly humane, using materials that have been shed or harvested from those who have fallen to old age.

    B. Spar with Cenephar using the
    latest
titanium cutlass Arich has been trying to get for a while.

Cenephar is a green drakir, one of the few who have the privilege of calling Chorral their home, and among the close friendship that David, Corilyn, and Anor share. He is well versed in virtually every form of melee combat and has a few techniques he can pass on to Arich.
The titanium cutlass is a weapon that flourishes with such techniques, equipped with a durable hilt guard and a wide, deadly blade. It can parry incoming attacks just by swinging into them.

    C. Just get a
    latest
longbow - and either make up a bullshit story about what happened to the other one, or just tell Corey the truth.

Inevitably, Arich will run into Corilyn at some point, prompting her to ask about the change of equipment. He'll either have to make up a story of some kind or just fess up about the arcane bow, hoping she won't be terribly hurt by either choice. Fortunately, Arich has seen Corey enough to know she's almost never prone to outright anger.
While the arcane shortbow required no physical arrows, it fired bright purple beams in a straight line, something Arich had found to be the most conspicuous trait of the weapon. The longbow is more traditional, and even if it is bigger and requires a quiver, the arrows it launches carry some real power and distance behind them.

    D. Ask David about
    latest
draklung, and take a few rolls of it.

From what little Arich has heard about draklung, all he can really tell is that it's some kind of drakir or draconic substance that when lit and inhaled, makes one feel more like a dragon. Well, that doesn't mean it'll make a person breathe fire, but perhaps getting blown in the middle of combat isn't as bad as Arich has made it out to be.

Other options, including spells and magical items, have been excluded because Anor's assistance was required and Arich is missing a certain bow from his inventory.

    The Rider [2-1]
  • Morning. It was morning, and only an hour or two before the sun would reach noon position.

Arich walked out of the Rider armory, satisfied by the choice he had made last night. There was a brand new longbow slung over his shoulder, a simple weapon made from high-quality wood and an actual physical bowstring. In addition to this, he felt the weight of the quiver on his back, complete with two dozen arrows. Though it would be a lot more for him to carry going forward, he figured it would ultimately end up being a better choice for him than the magical weapon he had been given previously. Arich was more familiar with the longbow than anything else he had used in the past, and now that he felt a more familiar presence in his hands once again, he could take on tasks with a lot more confidence in the future.

There was another issue he would have to deal with as a result, though. Inevitably, Arich would encounter Corilyn sometime before he would have a chance to see his new companion. She would spot him with his new longbow, and ask him about whatever may have happened to the old one. Considering how much effort the sorcerer put into her spellcraft when she wasn't busy reading or drawing, Arich wasn't terribly sure if he wanted to risk upsetting her, even if he ultimately came out with something that may have personally suited him better for what he had considered doing back at the mansion. Eventually, he decided to simply hold back his worries and head over to to see Corey immediately.

It wasn't more than a minute before Arich found himself in front of Corilyn's personal study, opening the solitary door to let himself inside. As always, the ranger remarked at how much smaller the place seemed on the inside, perhaps because of the fact that the study was really only a moderately-sized room, shaped like a hexagon and well-lit from the glass ceiling. Aside from the entrance and the very back of the room, which had a writing desk at it, the walls were all lined with shelves, each filled with various books about magic, the world and all the creatures on it, and the occasional fiction novel. Glancing a little higher, most of the walls also had some kind of painting or decorative artifact attached, though Arich didn't pay nearly as much attention to those as he did to the wooden pillar in the center of the room, which Corilyn had placed the strange amulet on while David was speaking to her.

"...anything so far, Corey? You said there was some kind of power behind it, but right now all I see in front of me is some fancy-looking necklace."

"That's all you've ever been able to see," Corey replied. "Eventually, I'll be able to figure out how this works without wearing it, but don't be surprised that I haven't discovered anything useful in the past hour. It's going to take a lot of work to find out how to pull off something like this without using any magic to get there, but if things don't work out I think I'll only be able to do this with Cen."

The sorcerer looks up from her thoughtful pose to regard Arich, who had been doing the same for several seconds. Despite what one would initially assume a skilled caster to be wearing, Corilyn often stuck with a more casual appearance, leaving her purple eyes and auburn ponytail visible and sticking with a black, short-sleeved tunic, a brown rancher vest, and simple black pants complete with brown riding boots. Interestingly enough, it was apparent she had also tied string around her wrist, likely something to do with the purple dragon scales on the back of each of her hands. After making himself familiar with the lady in front of him, Arich looked up expectantly, waiting to see what she would say first.

"Hey, Arich," Corey greeted with one of her usual genuine smiles. "Thanks for helping David out last night."

"Yeah, no problem at all. But, ah... there was something I needed to tell you." The ranger briefly hesitated, but Corey's silence prompted him to continue.

"It's about something from last night..."

    A. "I lost that bow you gave me, Corey... sorry."

    B. "Alright, I'm just really nervous about the whole Rider thing. Is there anything else you could tell me before I meet them?"

    C. Show her the warp blade. Maybe she'll forget to ask about the bow.

    D. Say something else. (Write-in.)

    The Rider [2-2]
  • "I found something for myself while I was at the mansion, and I'm trying to figure out if it'll be useful to have when I'm a Rider," Arich said, taking out his arcane dagger and showing it to the others. "It's a wa-"

"Hold on a second," David interrupted. "How'd you get a hold of that thing?"

"They had an auction back at the mansion, selling all sorts of magical stuff," replied Arich. "I... may have given up more than I should've to get this one." Seeing David's raised eyebrow and Corey's slightly concerned expression, he continued, "Alright, I may have gotten a little carried away with bidding, and the host may have taken my old bow..."

In answer, David gave him a glare. "How the hell do you get carried away at an auction, man?"

"That's enough, David," Corey spoke softly, maintaining her genial expression. "Arich, it's fine, don't worry yourself. It took a while to make, but if you were asking whether warp magic might be better than bright arcane beams, I think I'd have to agree. I'm sure you'll be more careful about it in the future."

Arich breathed a sigh of relief. He had expected Corey to be disappointed or even angry at what he had done to something she made, but as it turned out she was quite ready to forgive him for whatever he had done. If only his companion could be someone like Corey or Anor, and speaking of which...

"Alright, fine, if Corey's fine with it then I guess you're good," David said. "While you're here, there's something else I want to talk about.

"So, you probably have a good idea of when your companion will arrive to meet you, right Arich?" The ranger nodded. "Okay, good. But there's a little something you may have to take care of before this. If I remember correctly, it should've been just about a week since you got that whole brand thing on your arm."

Every Rider was branded with the mark of a great beast - dragon or gryphon - about a week or a month before they would first encounter their lifelong friend. At first, the brand would appear in an unrecognizable form, but over time it would begin to develop itself until suddenly it appeared, in full clarity. Something interesting Arich had noted over time was that he had not seen such a mark on David, Corey, or Cenephar, though he had never bothered to ask any of them why this was the case.

"Corey will need to see what it is before you head out in a few minutes," David continued. "She always likes to look at what everyone gets anyways, and you might have to meet your companion in a different spot depending on how that tattoo looks."

Arich steadily breathed in and breathed out a few times, the moment of truth only seconds ahead of him. After asserting Corey she was ready, he slowly took off his glove and pulled his right sleeve as far up as he could, until he finally revealed the mark beneath.

    Who will Arich's companion be?
This is no easy decision, as there are three very different great beasts to choose from, each with their own set of unique skills, enhancements, and personalities... each with their own aspirations and their own flavor of speech (hopefully) - though you will have almost no idea what Arich will be walking into until after the choice is made.
In addition to abilities, each great beast has a single meta ability that will have a significant effect on your future choices and the rest of this story - though it is generally better to have more voters to make things more interesting with those extra additions in mind. These abilities are revealed to you from the outset in order to help you make this choice.

This may well be the most important choice you make in the story... so choose Arich's companion wisely.

    A. The Dragon
Dragons are one of the great creatures of the world, curious yet highly intelligent, and there are many different variations of them if one is fortunate enough to come across them during their travels. Though some dragons do not accept their fates alongside Riders at first, over time they grow to become some of the most devoted companions one can have. Their ability to provide support in and out of combat simply cannot be overlooked, as each dragon has an elemental preference and a powerful selection of spells which they cast from their mouth.
    Dragons possess the meta ability
    latest
Lorehound. Once per encounter, Arich may ask the Dragon to reveal some lore or backstory behind a character, object, or place. Combat information will never be directly revealed, but sometimes Arich may gain knowledge about certain characters he was never meant to know. Very few characters are resistant to this ability.

    B. The Gryphon
Loyal, stalwart, and gallant, gryphons are creatures that can easily be summarized with such grand language. They are willing to take on any risk and any challenge, and will readily put themselves in front of their friends if need be. Their fierce visage, half hawk and half lion, fits perfectly with their actions in battle and they have a light build that supports speed and aggression, allowing them to fight alongside others without issue.

Riskbreaker. The success percentage of every risky option is revealed, and rolls will be shown in a spoiler tab on the top of the page whenever one of those options is taken. In addition, Arich will know what happens on a failure before the risk is taken. Rarely, one may come across an option that still has unknown risks.

    C. The Serpent
Arich has never heard mention of any serpentine creature during his time in Chorral, and like most of the Riders has no idea they can even exist. However, there is in fact one such being living in absolute secrecy, waiting for someone to bear the mark. If Arich is branded with the Serpent's mark, he will find himself alongside a creature no Rider should ever be around - though it will certainly be quite the positive experience for his new companion.

Anarchism. Instead of selecting the option with the most votes, a voter will be randomly chosen and their choice will be used. If this vote is different from the majority decision, the Serpent will force Arich towards the chosen option. There will be a clear indication as to whether choices are or aren't affected by this.

    The Rider [2-3]
  • Arich couldn't help but hold his breath for an uncomfortably long time as he brought his sleeve further and further up. Soon enough, he had pulled it up far enough to reveal the wings and beak of a gryphon, inked in black and depicted in a fierce stance.

"A gryphon..." the ranger gasped. "My companion is going to be a gryphon."

Arich could not imagine Corilyn's smile to be any brighter than it already was, but today would surprise him in more ways than one.

"They will be much more than a companion," the sorcerer began, her tone much less casual than before. "This gryphon, over time, will grow to become your lifelong friend, and your ever-constant partner whom you can rely on whenever you are in battle, whenever you need eyes in the sky, and..." Corey paused for a second, as if she was trying to remember what to say next. Her relaxed tone returned when she continued, "Well, just think of it like having a wingman. They'll listen to you, and they'll always be around when you need them."

David nodded. "I don't really know any gryphons myself, but from what I've heard they're real easy to get along with, even at the time you first meet each other. I think you're going to be just fine."

"Hope so," was all Arich said in response. He knew his nerves would calm down soon enough, even during the face-to-face encounter with the gryphon - something years of occasional acquaintance with Anor had allowed him to become used to.

"Just remember this is something you'll need to do alone," mentioned Corey. "If you head over to the clearing a good few minutes northwest of here and spend some time preparing yourself for the encounter, you'll be ready when the gryphon tracks your mark over to where you are. If you're all set here, then I think it might actually be a good time for you to go."

Arich simply nodded in response, still anxious and a little giddy at what he knew was going to happen in an hour. He took one last look at himself before walking out the single door of the study and making his way towards the clearing, intending to arrive about half an hour before his new companion was due.

The clearing appeared exactly as Arich had remembered: a wide area lush with grass, docile wildlife, and the occasional log or boulder. Though he had only been around the area once or twice, he knew how significant was for a great portion of Chorral, as many of the Riders before him had also met their companions here for the very first time. It was also a spot frequented by many of the senior riders from time to time, likely for the purpose of revisiting such memories. For a while, Arich just sat, going through all the possibilities he and the gryphon could be a part of in the future. Of course, they would have to meet each other before that could all happen.

As if on cue, however, almost all the sounds of the birds and fauna around the ranger had suddenly become silent, and even the ambience of the wind and trees ceased for a while.

Arich listened for a few seconds, tensed up in anticipation, but nothing came and he relaxed a little. Perhaps it had just been a coinci-

Suddenly, a blur of movement flew in from behind the ranger, rapidly closing in towards the center of the clearing and narrowly missing his head.

As Arich watched the form land, he immediately realized what was standing in front of him. He quickly glanced at the creature's features, noting its razor-sharp front talons, fully spread wings, and falcon plumage, with the other half of the body appearing as that of a lion, or perhaps another predatory cat. Though it was only about one-and-a-half times as tall as the ranger and roughly twice as long, it was still an impressive and imposing sight to witness. With all this in mind, the creature staring down Arich could none other than the gryphon who had sought him out.

Arich stands up and prepares to face the gryphon.
Select any combination of choices here, between just one of them or all of them at once.

    A. Slowly, carefully approach the gryphon.

    B. Have a hand raised out. If Arich is also approaching, he will attempt to touch the gryphon's head.

    C. Have the other hand on the warp blade, ready to strike or warp away if things don't go as they should.

    D. Avoid direct eye contact. Arich isn't sure if gryphons are like wolves or certain birds of prey, and may not want to chance it here.

    E. An introduction? A question, perhaps? (Write-in.)

    The Rider [2-4]
  • Arich decided not to say anything at first, and figured he would try to approach the gryphon as fearlessly as he could.

Taking slow, carefully measured steps forward, the ranger held the gryphon's gaze intently as he raised his open right hand, holding it forward as if attempting to reach for the creature's head. It stood perfectly still as he gradually closed the short distance to rest his hand upon its beak. It felt quite warm and smooth to the touch.

In response to this, the gryphon closed its eyes, making a sound similar to a contented sigh. It then lifted its great clawed foot to be level with Arich's head. The ranger held his breath, unsure of what would happen next, and watched as the talons slowly descended to rest themselves on his left shoulder.

A few tense seconds passed until, finally, the gryphon opened its eyes and became the first of the two to break the silence.

"It is an honor to finally meet you at last, Rider." The voice was fairly deep, and it confirmed what Arich had slowly begun to assume, that he was facing a male gryphon. "And I would be even more honored to know you as a friend - if you would allow it."

"Of course," Arich replied with a grin. "Absolutely. It'll be damn good to fly alongside you, but I feel like we should introduce ourselves first."

The gryphon nodded slightly. "Indeed. May I hear your name first, Rider?"

"You can call me Arich Liordei - just stick with Arich." The ranger paused a bit as he heard his name being tested aloud, then continued, "Now, mind telling me your name?"

"I do not have a name yet," replied the gryphon. "We do not call ourselves by any name until we are deemed ready to receive a name, usually by an elder of our kind - but here, the naming would fall upon you, Rider."

"I... have to name you?" Arich asked, and the gryphon nodded in confirmation. "Wow. That's a huge thing for me to do, isn't it?"

"It is Rider tradition, from what I have been taught," the gryphon said. "I am still young, but if you believe me to be worthy of a name, then I await it eagerly."

The gryphon's intense gaze remains fixed on Arich, in anticipation of his answer.

    A. Consider a good name for the gryphon. (Write-in a name and a very good reason for this name.)

    B. Tell the gryphon he should be the one to name himself. It doesn't seem right for anyone else, not even Arich himself, to make this choice.

    C. Tell the gryphon it may need to be done later today. Arich was put on the spot here, but he promises he'll think of something soon.

    D. Perhaps it will still be a while before the gryphon should have a name. The two will need to learn more about each other before Arich can come up with a name that sounds best for the gryphon.
