  Yato appears as a young man in his early twenties. He is usually seen wearing his signature navy jersey, along with a tattered scarf tied around his neck. He has dark, bluish-violet, chin-length hair, which he occasionally wears in a ponytail, and blue eyes, which have cat like irises when he is angered. Comparing him to Yukine (155 cm) he appears to be roughly between 175 and 180 cm, leaning towards the taller side.
• Yato (夜ト) is the male protagonist of the series. He is a God of calamity/god of war, but as of recent has decided to be a god of fortune. Yato will often indulge in fantasies of himself being a very successful god with more followers than any other god with lots of shrine maidens at his fingertips. He works as a "delivery god", and does pretty much everything for five Yen. He advertises for his services by smearing grafitti all over walls and windows or handing out cards. He's the chaotic good kind of person, and he does what he thinks is right.

  Despite his aloof and often idiotic personality, Yato is a god that is seen to be quite wise and very serious when the situation requires it. He was a god of war in the past, after all...
  
  
  
  
  But... Well, he doesn't behave like one most of the time.
  
• No god can fight without a Shinki, and the same goes for Yato. A Shinki is basically a spirit of a person, turned into a god's weapon (Regalia) Yato has only one Regalia, and that is Yukine. Gods need a Shinki in order to defend themselves against other gods or Ayakashi (phantoms). However, a Regalia is also a god's weakness. And that weakness is blight. Blight, also known as Impurities is a term used to describe wounds caused by a phantom and corrupts gods, shinki, and souls. The term "Impure" is used when a victim is wounded. Blight is known by visible purplish-red mark on the affected area of the body, although the appearance differs between gods and souls. A god, a shinki or a soul can get impure through three ways as follows:
  
  
  
  
  
  -When the god, shinki or the soul is attacked by phantoms.
  
  
  -When a soul touches the blight mark and gets infected.
  
  
  -When a shinki commits a sin.

  Blight in general will cause the victim to go through a phase called “defilement” or "corruption". However, the appearance of the blight mark and the effect of it differ between a god and a soul or shinki:
  
  
  
  
  
  The blight mark for a god is shown as visible purplish-red mark with nothing else. If left untreated, the blight will spread all over his/her body, causing the god to degrade and eventually die. For a soul, other than the blight mark the wound will also appear phantom-like. Phantom’s eyes will appear on the wound and spread all over the soul’s “body”. If left untreated the phantom will feed on the soul, possessing and changing the soul into a phantom. If a soul or shinki touches a blight mark on a wounded god, the blight will infect them. The blight mark has no phantom eyes but if left untreated the eyes will appear, and the effect is similar to one directly attacked by phantoms.If a shinki commits a sin, the blight appears on both the owner god’s nape and the shinki’s back. While the shinki feels nothing, a red phantom eye will appear on the back each time a sin is committed. The god however will feel stabbing pain as the shinki’s name is linked with the god’s life. If left untreated or no action is taken, the god will die and the shinki will turn into a phantom.Blight can be treated using the following methods:
  
  
  
  
  
  A blight mark without phantom eyes can be cleansed by washing it away using purifying water obtained from shrines or natural springs. This method only works for a god that is injured by a phantom’s attack or a soul that is infected from a wounded god. If the blight is caused by a shinki committing sins, the blight must be purified by conducting a purification ritual towards the offending shinki. This method while painful is the only way to cleanse both the shinki and the god owning it.
  
  
  
  
  
  Yukine is Yato's one and only shinki. However, Yukine is the most powerful shinki Yato ever owned. The blade's lethality depends on the Regalia's mood, loyalty and willpower.
  
  
  
  
  
  To sum it up, a god's power depends on the Regalia's behavior. If the Regalia has a strong mind and a pure heart, the god will be extremely powerful and healthy.
• Yato loves food and saves as much money as possible. He has a bottle filled with 5 Yen coins, and he loves that friggin' bottle. He needs every coin for his shrine, after all. And, of course, he likes his friends. Especially Yukine and Hiyori.

  Yato dislikes those who decide to commit suicide. 'If they want to die, let them die' Is a thing he likes to say. He makes no effort to save them, but says that people should be thankful for the live they've been given, even when it's tough.
• 
  When Yato makes Yukine his Shinki, Yato experiences the forgotten memories of Yukine when he was human and cries in reaction to it, indicating that Yukine had a hard life before his death, although as of now, Yukine still doesn't remember. It is vaguely shown that Yukine had a family, but his mother and sister left, leaving him in the custody of his father. Although how Yukine died is currently unknown, the flashbacks may indicate that Yukine was possibly beaten and neglected by his father because he talked back and later died of his injuries. From then on, Yukine wandered aimlessly as an uncorrupted spirit before being found by Yato.
  
  
  
  
  
  A shinki is able to use many skills depending on the form it takes. However in human form, all Shinki in general can use a skill called "Boundary".
  
  
  
  
  
  Boundary is a shinki’s only weapon and is used to protect itself from phantom attacks. This unique ability can only be used by a shinki; it cannot be used by gods, loose spirits, phantoms, and living beings.
  
  
  
  
  
  To make a boundary, a shinki uses his/her right hand’s index and middle fingers to draw a horizontal line between themselves and the phantoms. This gesture will make a temporary barrier, and phantoms cannot move across it. However, if the phantom is too strong the barrier will break, and the shinki will be attacked.
  
  
  
  
  
  Aside from protecting a shinki from phantoms, the Boundary has another use. If three shinki use Boundary in the form of a triangle, a Prison is formed and can trap a shinki, a phantom, a human or even a god. Prison is normally used to perform the purification ritual on an offending shinki, attacking the phantom residing on his/her body and cleansing the shinki.
