Emily seemed to calm down some once Pepper announced her presence to the formerly sleeping young woman. A sigh escaped her lips as she brushed a hand back through her hair. Her head still hurt something fierce, but she didn't expect a full recovery in one day. It never really worked that way unfortunately as she lay back against the couch. Grateful, at least that Pepper had taken the initiative to get Reyna some breakfast even if she felt bad that she hadn't been up to do that for her daughter. Still, she had accepted Pepper's help and she guessed that meant in more ways than one. She waved off Pepper's apology though when she mentioned waking her up. That she'd been worried about her which made her heart warm to hear it even if she doubted it was in the way she hoped for. Truthfully, she hadn't slept that well since her days with Jeremy but she didn't offer that up to the woman. This was only temporary until she could find somewhere away from Damien.

Why on earth would Pepper want her back in her life or Reyna for that matter? She knew her daughter had a right to know her real father, but she wouldn't subject that to her right now. Not if Pepper was just going to walk out on them again. Her daughter didn't need that in her life, though one could argue she didn't need a monster in her life either. Her thoughts not quite altogether as she was still hurting from being knocked out by her boyfriend. Her eyes looked up though when Pepper handed her another dose of painkiller asking her how she was doing while she sat up to take them. She still felt exhausted and battered, but the sleep had helped. Being safe had helped as Pepper insisted she had more if she needed them. Prepared to open her mouth when Pepper insisted that she had been very well behaved. That she even got to go on a coffee run with her as the little girl bobbed her head excitedly.

"Well now...sounds like somehow had an exciting morning. I'm feeling a little better. Head's killing me though...but at least it's stopped bleeding," murmured Emily tiredly as she glanced down at her sweet little girl.

She really didn't deserve a wonderful daughter like her, but she'd doing anything she could to come close to it. Her fingers carded through her daughter's long black hair just as silky as her own. Just as Reyna chose that moment to practically pounce her which caused a wave of pain through her body though she didn't voice it. She knew her daughter didn't mean it and furthermore, she was still just a little girl. Her head slowly turned though when Pepper offered her the coffee and muffin though Emily really wasn't that hungry at the moment. Though she did thank Pepper appreciatively as she took the coffee and chased down the pills. The coffee was black with sweetener which was just the way she actually enjoyed it. Just as Pepper mentioned she'd simply done her best before scolding Reyna who just giggled innocently.

"Trust me she's enough trouble without coffee. It's perfect. Black with sweetener just the way i like it actually. You did good Pepper. I appreciate it," murmured Emily softly as she moved to lay back down again. Unintentionally letting her top shift revealing an angry-looking bruise as she kissed Reyna gently on her head. She knew she should get up and get Reyna out of her hair, but she just didn't have the strength to do it.

"Well now aren't you lucky, Reyna. That's one of your favorite drinks isn't it, sweetheart."

"Hehe yes, mommy. What are we doing today? Are we going to the park? Or the library? Wait...it's not daycare today is it?" asked the little girl as she suddenly scrunched up her face trying to remember if it was or not. It made Emily chuckle as she shook her head before regretting that as she felt a wave of nausea hit her. In an instant, she was struggling to the bathroom forgetting the fact that she was still very dizzy to begin with. Reyna frowning worried she'd said something when she just barely made it to the toilet to throw up. The little girl bit her lip in concern as she glanced up over at Pepper nervously.

Emily waved away Pepper's apology for waking her and took the pills Pepper had offered her. So she had gotten the coffee right after all. It was strange, the things one could somehow manage to remember after years of not thinking about them at all. A small half smile danced at the corner of Pepper's lips as Reyna enthusiastically bobbed her head up and down, and she moved to perch on the edge of a nearby chair. Pepper had never been one to relax with others around her, and with Emily still so fragile it probably wasn't wise for her to get comfortable.

Emily's shirt shifted then, revealing a particularly nasty bruise along her collarbone, and Pepper felt herself involuntarily flinch before quickly turning her head away. It was worse than she'd realized. Pepper swallowed thickly and then acted as though she hadn't seen anything. Even if she had pressed Emily about it, it was unlikely she'd say much of anything about it with Reyna right there.

Her thoughts were pulled from the sight of Emily's bruises as Reyna piped up again, excitedly asking what they were going to do today. Pepper listened silently. The park would be nice. Maybe she could take Reyna and Emily someplace interesting--catch up a little bit. Pepper's gaze settled on Reyna, who was still chattering away. Was there any point? Emily and Reyna weren't going to stay here forever. They'd leave, and Pepper might never see either one of them again. She shouldn't get attached. Not only for her own sake, but for Reyna's as well. Reyna seemed to have been growing up just fine without her. Getting close to the little girl just meant it would hurt her when they left. Pepper refused to hurt another person again.

Pepper was about to speak up again just as Emily shook her head. The woman struggled to sit up and then bolted into the bathroom, barely making it to the toilet before throwing up. Pepper stared for a moment, and then took note of Reyna standing nervously beside her. Pepper gave the girl a reassuring nudge and quickly moved to Emily's side, kneeling down next to her and gently placing a hand on her back. Perhaps Emily wasn't as all right as she'd originally thought. "Emily," she started softly. "Maybe...maybe you should lie back down. Just...stand up slow."

Emily could only groan as she heaved what little she had eaten the night before in the bowl. Her eyes closed as she regretted shaking her head as she had. Maybe she wasn't as 'alright' as she fooled herself into believing. Her head rested against the toilet feeling ashamed of herself that her daughter had to see her mother in such bad shape. Usually, Emily could pull herself around after a good sleep, but then again she'd never hit her head like this. Sure, Damien smacked her around a good while, but never enough to knock her out. Her daughter didn't deserve any of this. Maybe she should do the right thing and let her be adopted. She closed her eyes knowing Reyna would resent her forever if she did that to her now. She wouldn't understand and the only thing that she would understand was that her mother didn't love her. She kept her eyes closed as she felt the cold porcelain edge of the toilet against her aching head. It helped a little as she waited for her stomach to stop revolting against her.

Coughing a little just as she felt a presence to her side before a hand was gently pressed against her back. She flinched a little at first out of habit, but then slowly relaxed against the familiar touch. How the roles had reversed it seemed with Emily now needing help Jer-Pepper. There was no Jeremy anymore it seemed. It mattered little to Emily as she didn't care what gender she wanted to associate with. She'd slept with men and enjoyed it just as much as she had slept with girls and enjoyed it. 'She doesn't want you that way,' reasoned a voice in her head as if to remind her that this was only temporary. At least, Reyna wasn't here to see her like this. If she knew her daughter, she was probably taking little bites of the muffin untouched for her. She'd normally scold her as she'd already clearly had enough sugar...but she doubted she'd be able to eat it. Nor did she particularly feel like scolding the girl after the rough night they'd both had.

Her focus returned to the presence beside her when she heard Pepper call her name. Telling her that maybe she should lay back down. To take it slow while she stood up. Emily wasn't particularly fond of the idea with her little girl eager to spend a rare day off with mommy. She supposed that was the least of her trouble right now. If she didn't get better she'd likely end up in the hospital which she did not want to deal with. They'd take one look at her and draw the conclusions she didn't want to hear. Even if she could claim that she'd fallen against the table which wouldn't have been a lie. How she fell against the table was a different story though as she took a few moments to collect herself. Her head still hurt and she was pretty sure, she just wasted those painkillers she'd just taken. Much as she enjoyed the cold floor, she knew she was going to have to get up eventually. Slowly forcing her limbs to move as she used her arms and Pepper's support to get her up again.

Her head throbbed, though she didn't get that return of nausea as she had feared this time. Slowly being allowed to retreat from the bathroom as she could hear Reyna chattering to herself. A weak smile on her face, glad to see her daughter could entertain herself with little effort. She knew she hadn't exactly packed much of anything for her daughter in her haste to leave. She'd have to rectify that soon as she could. Thankfully, she'd been too tired to argue about not having any of her toys and clothes the other night. Her body slowly lowered back down to the couch with a painful wince as the little girl whipped her head around to look at her mommy and Pepper.

Pepper slowly helped Emily to her feet, the woman's shape still weak against her side. Pepper let Emily lean against her for a few moments before scooping the woman up into her arms, unsure if she could manage getting back to the couch without stumbling. Pepper was surprised she could still lift her. Pepper hadn't lifted much anyone in years, but she supposed that she had built up more strength learning to defend herself than she'd realized. Her fingers accidentally tangled in her ex's hair for a moment, and then Pepper forced herself to pull her hand away.

Pepper carried Emily back across the living room and gently deposited her back onto the couch as gently as she could. "Try not to move around too much," Pepper told her. She rounded the corner into the kitchen and returned with a glass of water, setting it down on the table beside the coffee. "If you don't feel well enough to eat, at least try to drink something. You'll feel even worse if you end up dehydrated." Pepper turned around to see Reyna staring at them, her eyes round and worried.

"Don't worry," Pepper assured the child. "She'll be okay. She just needs to rest." She went back to the kitchen for a second time, the image of the bruise on Emily's chest still fresh in her mind as she rummaged around in the freezer. She headed back to the living room with an ice pack and handed it to Emily. "Here," she offered. "This might help."

Pepper leaned against the arm of the couch, gazing worriedly down at Emily. "Do you...need anything?" Pepper asked her. "Reyna and I could go and pick up some stuff and leave you to rest."

Emily was grateful when Pepper reached out to support her without being asked about it. If Emily had her way, she'd never ask for it and never had even when things had been good between them. Her head still felt like it was spinning, but at least she didn't have the urge to throw up again. She didn't feel very stable though she didn't call attention to this particular fact. Only to startle when Pepper suddenly lifted her into her arms. 'Just like old times,' mused a voice in her head as she closed her eyes. Waiting to adjust to the sudden elevation only to flinch when a hand tangled in her hair. She had just started to relax before the hand was removed once more. Unable to explain the sharp ache in her heart that came when the hand disappeared. She said nothing to Pepper as she was gently carried back away from the bathroom and settled upon the couch once more as gentle as possible. Even still, she did groan a little from pain as she lay back down once more.

Well aware that her daughter was looking at her with blatant concern knowing she'd never really see her mother this bad off. Not surprised when Pepper seemed to take over care of her. It made her think of one of the few times she was sick with a nasty cold. She closed her eyes just as Pepper told her that perhaps she should take it easy today. Easier said than done with a restless child to oversee and certainly her boyfriend wouldn't bother to help in that department. Instructing her not to move around so much if she could help it. Her eyes briefly returned to her daughter who seemed quite worried for her. She wet her lips as she tried to coax her daughter over, but Reyna stayed where she was. Listening as Pepper rummaged around in the kitchen before returning to her side once more with a glass of water. Her brown eyes fell upon her former lover as she saw a glass of water sat down in front of her. Just as Pepper told her that she should at least drink some water if she didn't feel up to eating.

A weak nod was all she received as Emily slowly reached for the glass of water and took a sip. She sighed gently as the water helped soothed her now burning throat. She had to admit it sure felt nice to be cared for in such a manner. Damien would have never done anything of the sort for her. Probably still angry she hadn't cleaned up the blood left behind. She quickly pushed the thoughts aside as Pepper turned to address her daughter. Just as Reyna slowly moved her way over to Pepper's side. Clearly seeking comfort from the only other adult in the room right now. She was glad to see Reyna felt comfortable enough to go to her. It made her feel good in that respect as she sighed contently. Grateful even when Pepper reassured her that her mother would be alright and just needed more rest. Looking up as Pepper once more was at her side offering her an ice pack.

"Thank you...I guess I hit my head harder than I realized," murmured Emily softly as she took the icepack.

Setting it gently upon herself as she attempted to get as comfortable as her body would allow. The cold did help a little with the aches and pain she had accumulated this last little while. Grateful that Pepper didn't pry too much more though she doubted she would with her daughter standing there. She did not need her daughter hearing such things. Not surprised that Pepper stood there over her in concern. Asking if there was anything she could get for her as she thought she'd take Reyna out for a bit. Likely so Emily could rest and get back her strength as she glanced at her daughter.

"May let her pick out a new stuffie and book if you don't mind? I didn't exactly get a chanc-No Reyna...I'm sorry....I didn't get Sa-"

"But I need Sammie mommy. I can't sleep without Sam.....can't we just go and g-"

"No sweetheart...I'm afraid not," murmured Emily not really in the mood to argue with her daughter even though she could see the sadness written all over her face. She loved that plush dog as it'd been the one she'd practically grown up with. Had it since the day she was born. She almost hated herself for not getting that little dog as she could see the tears threatening to fall down her face.

Pepper felt her heart crack as she set Emily down on the sofa. She'd never seen Emily this bad off before. Pepper's shoulders dropped as Emily took a small sip of the water. She hadn't even realized how tense she'd been. This was all foreign to her. Back when they'd still been together it had always been Pepper who'd needed help. Pepper had been the one who'd needed to be tended to, always frightened and on edge, and keeping her head down to avoid trouble. Emily had always taken control. It had been Emily who'd always known what she was doing while Pepper struggled frantically to put the puzzle together.

Now Emily was the frail one, and Pepper had no idea what to do apart from just trying her best. They'd gone their separate ways and Emily had been the one to end up hurt and scared, while Pepper had wound up apathetic to most things around her. Pepper hadn't figured out what she was doing. She's simply become better at faking it.

Pepper glanced down, blinking in surprise as she felt Reyna brush up against her side. Unsure of how else to comfort the child, Pepper gave her a gentle pat on the back and offered up a reassuring grin. Her mother would be fine. Emily just needed time to heal. Emily quickly suggested taking Reyna to get a new book and a stuffed toy. She apologized for not grabbing Reyna’s toy, and upon learning they couldn’t just go and get it, Reyna’s lip began to tremble, tears threatening to spill down her cheeks. Pepper knelt down next to her.

“Hey,” Pepper started. “Don’t be upset. I’m sorry we can’t go and get Sammie. But maybe we can go find you a new friend for now, hm? I’ll let you pick out any one you want. You can pick a book too and then maybe tonight we can read it together if you want.” Pepper stood up again and looked expectantly down at the girl. She hoped Reyna wouldn’t be too upset. Pepper felt bad, trying to replace something the girl was obviously so attached to, but Reyna looked like her heart was about to shatter into a million pieces. It made Pepper’s own heart hurt.

Emily knew this wasn't what her former lover had wanted or probably needed in her life. From the looks of it, Pepper had her life well put together and here she'd gone and ruined it. She felt like shit just thinking about the fact that she was causing extra stress on Pepper's shoulder. Granted, she didn't think she'd be this badly off she couldn't take care of herself or her daughter. Still, she supposed there was nothing for it unfortunately as she lay there battered and bruised. Her eyes closed as it seemed to help with the pain behind her eyes as she reminded herself she had a daughter to take care of. She knew Reyna was upset and it wasn't fair to be grouchy with the little girl. Not that she had been, but she had to remind herself that she wasn't the only one that had been affected by the sudden decision to move. And she knew how much Reyna had loved that little dog. She just was more worried about her boyfriend finding them packing to leave than her toy.

An error in judgment she regretted deeply though there was nothing more for it now she supposed. Taking another sip of her water before she set it back down and lay down to rest once more. She could practically hear the sadness in her daughter's voice when she begged for her to get Sammy back. To know that she couldn't get the little worn stuffie was more than enough to start the waterworks. And hard for her mother to bear, but she couldn't afford to risk returning and being caught by her father. Maybe when things calmed down, she might attempt it when Reyna was none the wiser. Yet, even she was skeptical and wary of setting foot back in their old house. It was just too dangerous for the little girl much as she knew that she'd miss the chance to sleep with Sam. She couldn't blame the child as she was sure she'd be upset too if she found out a beloved toy was no longer available to them. As Reyna's mouth quivered just as the little girl felt a gentle pat on the back.

She had an inkling that Reyna wanted to fight more on the subject matter, but was too upset to get the words out. Or too worried for her mother to start something up. In either case, Emily was grateful to the little girl even though she wouldn't have expected any less. The little girl dropped her head sadly as her lip continued to tremble a little. It wasn't fair. Mommy always brought Sam with them. Why couldn't they just go and get it? It didn't make any sense to the little girl. Only to turn her head when Pepper knelt down in front of her so they were almost eye level. How she was sorry they couldn't go and get sammie back. But that maybe she could get a new friend and a book that Pepper even volunteered to read to her. Well, it wasn't Sam, she supposed that would be alright as she reluctantly nodded her head.

"Okay..Pepper," murmured the little girl quietly as she slowly wrapped her arms around the older woman. Hugging her tightly as Emily just smile where she lay as she gave another yawn. 'That's my girl,' thought Emily as she settled back down under the blankets. Glad that for now Reyna wouldn't argue anymore about getting Sam, though she doubted this was truly the end of the conversation. She was really appreciative of Pepper taking her on like this even if this wasn't the point of the visit. She was going to have to talk to Pepper about this, but now right now.

"You be a good girl for Pepper now and stay close. No running off either," warned Emily to her daughter.

"Yes mommy," murmured the little girl from where she stood hugging Pepper before releasing her and then giving her mother a brief hug. Earning a gentle kiss on the forehead for her efforts as the little girl smiled and giggled. Then looked back over towards her mother's friend as if asking if they were ready to go yet.

Pepper could tell that Reyna still wasn't entirely sold on the idea of going without her toy, and she could see from the look on Emily's face that the woman felt terrible about it too, but it was more than likely too dangerous to go and get it. Pepper frowned. She hoped that whatever they found today could tide Reyna over at least for a little while Maybe she and Emily could figure something out later, once things weren't so risky. Pepper reached out to lightly tousle the child's hair as she stood up, giving a small jump of surprise as Reyna wrapped her arms around her legs.

Pepper exhaled quietly when she looked down and saw Reyna hugging her. The corner's of Pepper's mouth lifted in a small smile and she reached down to return the girl's hug. "It won't be so bad," Pepper promised. "We'll have fun." The girl gave her mother a quick hug and bounced toward the door. Pepper quickly took her coat from the back of the desk chair and pulled it on before looking back over her shoulder at Emily. "We'll be back soon," she told her. "Get some rest." She paused, swallowing back anything else she might have wanted to say before turning to lead Reyna from the apartment.

"Come on," Pepper told her. "It's not a far walk." She then added, "No running off, all right? Your mom will end me if you get lost." Pepper wasn't used to having to keep an eye on someone. She was usually just out alone, though she couldn't say she didn't enjoy the little girl's company. It was a nice change of pace for someone who normally spent most of their daylight hours in solitude. At night she was either out at the bar, or working, and that was when she got in her social time. It was strange to have company, though not unpleasant.

The walk to the store was fairly short, and as the pair of them stepped inside Pepper turned to look at Reyna. "All right," Pepper told her. "One book, one stuffed animal, and you can pick a third thing just because I feel like being nice." She smirked and looked down at Reyna out of the corner of her eye. "Don't tell anybody I'm being nice," she said, straightening up. "It's my carefully guarded secret." She only meant it partly as a joke. Pepper reserved her vulnerability for in private, and even then it was difficult to pry out of her.

Emily watched the pair leave as she felt her heart sank knowing she should be the one to take Reyna. It was her fault after all that she didn't have any of her toys or books or even her own clothes. She just hadn't been thinking about anything more than the need of getting her daughter out safely. She was definitely going to have to rectify that as well as her own situation at some point. She couldn't help smiling when she saw Reyna hug Pepper's legs after the woman had stood up. A faint smile on her face that grew more warmly when Pepper slowly returned the hug from her...their daughter. If only Reyna knew, but she wouldn't do that to her. Not if Pepper would cease to exist from their lives once this temporary arrangement came to an end. Her daughter's giggle priceless when Pepper reached down to tussle her long black hair. Just as Reyna hugged her before taking off to get ready for her day out. Pepper chimed in saying for her to get some rest and they'd be back soon.

The black hair lady nodded her head as she watched the pair of them head out of the apartment. A gentle sigh escaped her lips as she slowly sank back down into the sheets. Her hand came up to gently brush through her hair wincing as she touched the gash on her head by mistake. She flinched slightly when she heard the door close and lock behind them. The apartment fell silent once more as she chewed her inner cheek. With nothing more to do and her daughter in the care of her ex-lover, she slowly closed her eyes and prepared to sleep. Reyna meanwhile, followed Pepper out the door excited for another little adventure as she stayed close to the older woman. Reaching out to gently take her hand like she sometimes did with her mommy as Pepper informed her it wouldn't be too far a walk and not to run off again. Her head nodded enthusiastically though she did giggle at her mommy's friend's choice of wording.

"Do you like mommy?" asked Reyna suddenly as she imagined her free hand was the wing of an airplane.

Making little zooming noises with her lips as she giggled at her own creative mind as they walked down the stairs and outside. It was a little crowded which made things easy as Reyna was quick to stay close to Pepper. She really didn't like crowds all that much as they got too loud and hurt her ears. Moving to press a little closer to her as she was guided towards the toy store nearby. Conversing about trivial things that probably made more sense to the little girl than anyone else. A few more minutes and they were finally inside the toy store as Reyna gazed in awe at the big selection. Seeing other children pass by without care and parents looking for last minute birthday gifts. Her head lifted up uncertain until Pepper told her she could pick out one stuffed toy, a book and maybe something else.

"You no go anywhere right? Daddy sometimes leave me behind places....sometimes for hours...I don't like it much. But I'm not supposed to tell mommy," asked the little girl anxiously as she shifted from foot to foot. Her eyes on the woman that was supposed to be looking after her. Although she was clearly interested in what the store had to offer. It just became apparent that the store was a bit daunting for the little girl as she jumped when some rowdy boys tore past them with toy guns.

Pepper stiffened slightly as Reyna asked her if she liked her mother, and then answered as if nothing had happened. “Of course I do,” she said. “Your mother and I were very close before you were born. And then we went off to different schools and didn’t see each other anymore. It’s nice seeing her again. I missed her a lot.” Pepper knew it was her own fault they’d fallen out of touch. At the time, she’d believed she was helping Emily by staying away. Sparing her from dealing with Pepper’s own inner demons. She knew now that that wasn’t the case.

“I’m glad I get to see her again,” Pepper admitted. “I just wish she wasn’t hurt.” She looked down at Reyna. “I’m happy I got to meet you too. I like you. Which is saying a lot. I’m not particularly fond of most people.” Pepper could probably count the people she was close to on one hand. And even then, the number was debatable. They stepped into the store then, and Pepper willed the thoughts from her mind.

She raised an eyebrow as Reyna practically begged her not to go anywhere. Saying that her father often left her behind places. “I’m not going anywhere,” Pepper promised. She then added, “You know, Reyna, it’s not safe for you to be wandering around on your own. Sometimes grownups will tell kids to keep secrets because they don’t want to get in trouble with other grownups. If your dad is leaving you places and doing things that make you scared, you need to tell your mom.”

She reached down to give Reyna’s shoulder a reassuring squeeze and then headed towards the stuffed animals, hoping that the toy might calm Reyna’s fears.

Reyna was too busy taking a look at everything not to notice the discomfort on her face when she asked about her mother. A grin on her face when she heard that Pepper did like her mom. Well, obviously she did or they wouldn't be staying with her. Though it didn't make much sense why she'd never known about Pepper before this moment. She supposed it didn't matter though as Pepper told her they had been very close for a time but had just gotten separated somewhere along the way. That made sense or as much sense as a little girl could understand. Sad to hear they'd not seen each other for a long time, but that she was glad to see her. She even missed her by the sounds of it as she stared at a shelf full of puzzles with various designs and complexities. Her mom loved puzzles or did until Daddy got mad at the mess she had made with the pieces. She really didn't like it when mommy got yelled at. It was always so loud and scary when it happened.

She looked up at Pepper when she mentioned she was glad to see her again. Though she wished it was for better reasons. She could only nod her head in agreement. She didn't like mommy like that, but surely Pepper would get her fixed up soon enough. At least, she hoped that was the case only for Pepper's gaze to come to rest upon her face as she admitted she liked her. That she didn't normally like other people, but she wasn't bad. It made Reyna grin a little more before bursting into one of her typical giggle fits. She settled soon enough until they had gotten into the store which was crowded with both rowdy, boisterous kids and their parents. Suddenly turning to Pepper for comfort since she didn't have her mother to go to. She wanted to be picked up, but she didn't know if Pepper would indulge her. And she was too shy to ask so instead, she simply pressed closer to her. Unable to help herself asking Pepper not to leave her alone. Unaware of how unusual it was for a parent do to that.

She had only just dropped her head when Pepper promised her that she wouldn't leave her alone. A brief nod on the little girl's face though she didn't quite seem to believe her. Her face did scrunch up when Pepper told her that her daddy shouldn't do that to her. That it wasn't safe and that grown ups sometimes told kids to keep secrets so they wouldn't be in trouble. That she should always feel comfortable telling her mom those sorts of things, but she didn't know. He was her dad after all so she wasn't sure if that still applied. Wasn't it just as wrong to tell on your father? She didn't think that was right, but said nothing. Just as Pepper's hand came down to rest upon her shoulder which she squeezed. Unlike Emily, Reyna didn't flinch from the touch though she did lean into it as though starved for attention. It seemed to soothe the little girl as they wandered over towards the stuffed animals. Practically every kind of animal imaginable was on those shelves as she stared in awe.

Her eyes roamed over the sea of plushies, from a pink penguin to a rainbow-colored unicorn. It was almost a little too much as her eyes widened at the sight in front of her. There had to be a billion stuffed animals in this section as she looked at them all in awe. Sadly, there weren't any Sam look alikes though she didn't know if she really wanted one. She was starting to thinking she might never find someone as good as Sam when she spotted a slightly worn red panda plushie that caught her interest. By the looks of it someone or someones had been tugging quite hard on the plushie as Renya slowly wandered over towards it curiously. It made her sad.

Pepper assured Reyna she wouldn't leave her alone, but the child appeared unconvinced. Pepper frowned. Just how often had she been left to fend for herself? Pepper didnt have much experience with kids, and even she wasn't dumb enough to just leave a small child to wander on her own. The girl's face scrunched up when Pepper told her it was wrong for her to be left alone, and she seemed to be thinking about what Pepper had said. "I mean it," Pepper told her. "It's very important to tell someone you trust if somebody is making you feel unsafe. Even if that somebody is your family. Families are supposed to take care of each other. Your family doesn't get a pass to hurt you just because they're your family. And you don't have to put up with it."

Pepper's own family had never outright hurt her. They had all at least tolerated her being the way she was, but no one talked about it. They didn't indulge it, instead acting as though she were simply a typical boy. Most of her birthday and Christmas gifts had been things she never would have chosen for herself, and though she always thanked whoever had given it, most things remained untouched. And there had been the subtle gazes of disappointment from her father and uncles, a reminder that she was not as she should have been.

Reyna leaned into Pepper's touch, almost as though starved for it. Pepper could see that. Emily obviously loved Reyna, but it was unlikely anybody else gave her affection often. Pepper let out a quiet sigh. She too, felt starved for affection most days. It was why she did the work she did. She could pretend that the attention she received was given out of affection rather than a part of her job. If she drank enough, she almost believed that it was.

Reyna made her way toward the plushies then, and Pepper followed after her. The child's gaze settled on a rather tattered looking red panda on the top shelf, and she stared at it for a few moments.
"He looks sad," Pepper observed quietly. She leaned down to scoop up Reyna and placed the little girl on her shoulders so she could see better. Pepper was surprised by how light she was. "He could probably use a pal."

Reyna looked up from her exploration of the plushie aisle when Pepper repeated again that it wasn't good for her to off on her own. That it was important for her to tell someone she trusted in that sort of situation. Even if it was part of your family which surprised the young girl as she stared at her puzzled. She hadn't realized that though nobody had ever really told her that part. Then again, she always felt bad bothering mommy with those things and often chose not to talk about them. Then again, her daddy could be pretty scary when he was in a bad mood. Which was normally just about all the time. She nodded her head again as she tried to make sense of what the woman was saying to her. She was still young so she didn't quite understand it all or her insistence that family didn't get a pass on hurting you. She would try to remember though as she looked between the shelves upon shelves of stuffies. Looking for anything that might have caught her eyes.

Every now and again, she'd chance a glance over in Pepper's direction as if trying to assess whether she was still there or not. Unaware of the fact of how starved she seemed for just the slightest bit of affection. Sure, her mother loved her dearly, but her father was another thing entirely. He hardly gave her any time or attention which used to bother Reyna a lot. It still did, but she often shrugged it off more than anything now. Like it was normal for parents not to want to have anything to do with children. Then slowly returned to her search wondering if she'd ever find someone like Sam. It still hurt that her mother said she couldn't have Sam. But she didn't think there was any point arguing further with her mom. A sigh of her own escaped her lips as she considered looking elsewhere when she noticed a little plushie on a high shelf all on its own. Unlike most of the other toys, it looked a little less new and tag was partially ripped. Yet, something about it enticed the little girl about it.

It seemed she wasn't the only one that noticed her longing for the panda out of all the others. Maybe because it was different than all the rest and didn't look so new. All it needed was a good friend she thought only for Pepper to tell her that he looked sad up there. Reyna nodded her head in agreement as she didn't even see any other red pandas around either. Likely all sold out which made Reyna even more sad only to squeak when Pepper scooped her up and lifted her onto her shoulders. A little giggle from her lips in enjoyment as she took a better look at it. That it seemed like he could use a pal as Renya inspected the red panda more closely. Reaching out to gently pick it up as she squished it gently between her hands. It was quite soft to the touch she noticed as she gently hugged it to her chest. Looking down at Pepper from her perch on her shoulders.

"Can we get him?" asked the little girl as she held out the red panda to Pepper to look at. It was a decent size too which meant plenty of cuddle opportunity. And wouldn't be so easily misplaced either not that Reyna was bad about leaving her toys on the floor. She remembered one time where daddy yelled at her because he tripped on one of her blocks by mistake. Not really her best move as a shop keeper noticed the pair and the scruffy looking toy in the girl's hand.

"Oh you don't want that thing. We have better toys dear. I might even have an extra red panda in the b-"

"No I want this one," insisted Reyna suddenly holding back the toy protectively in her arms as if afraid of it being taken.

As Pepper lifted Reyna onto her shoulders, the child reached out to grab the beat up looking toy and hugged it to her chest. She shoved the toy down into Pepper's face, excitedly asking if they could get it. Pepper smiled, reaching out to touch the soft toy and nudge it back up to Reyna. It really was soft, and its battered appearance added character. "If that's what you want," Pepper said. "Then you can have it. Maybe we can come up with a story about why he's so beat up. Maybe he's been on an adventure."

She had just finished speaking when the a store worker came up to them and immediately tried to grab the toy from Reyna, saying that she didn't really want that toy, that they had better ones and maybe even another panda in the back. Pepper understood on some level where the worker was coming from, but Reyna was obviously fond of the toy she had and didn't want to replace it with something else.

Reyna pulled the toy away, clinging to it desperately. It wasn't likely anybody else would take it, and if they left it behind it would probably just spend the rest of its days on the shelf looking sad, waiting for someone to come along and give it another chance. Pepper's eyes flicked up to the little girl on her shoulders and then back to the shop worker in front of them. "This is the one she wants," Pepper said simply. "We'll take this one. She can pick her own toys. But thank you." Pepper gently nudged the toy back into Reyna's arms. "Lets go see about finding you something else, hm?"

Reyna smiled when Pepper seemed to approve of the furry friend clutched in her hand that she waved in front of her. A giggle on her face when she reached up to touch the toy that she threw excitedly into her face. It may not have been her Sammie, but he would do just as well. Taking it back to where she currently rested on Pepper's shoulder enthusiastically. Listening as Pepper went on to say that if she really wanted it then she wouldn't argue it. A big smile rested upon Renya's face upon hearing that as she just hugged the little bear closer. Maybe it was the battered appearance that drew her attention...maybe it was fire red coat. It didn't matter to the little girl certain it just needed someone to give him a proper home. She liked the idea of figuring out a story for it as well though nothing really came to mind for the little girl. All, she cared about was the fact that she liked the sadly mistreated plushie and spending time with Pepper though she didn't voice that last thought.

At least, she hoped that was the case until the shop keeper had intervened suggesting Reyna might want another. Immediately upsetting Reyna as she quickly clung to the little panda so she couldn't take it. The woman quickly retracting her hand not wishing to upset the child. She only wanted to help to figure the girl would like a much newer toy. It really shouldn't have been on the shelf, to begin with. She relented though as the girl seemed to only become more protective of the battered toy. Probably fallen off the shelf or tugged between kids too often in her opinion. Reyna wouldn't even look at the shop keeper by that point as Pepper glanced her way. Relieved when she told the lady off and that she could pick her own toys. A nod of her head in agreement as the shopkeeper shrugged and moved away to help someone else. Reyna waved her goodbye as she kissed the little red panda on the head. Whispering that nobody could hurt it now.

Contented with the little panda even if she did miss Sammie as they discussed looking at some other things for her to occupy herself with. Especially when Pepper or Emily weren't available. Just like the plushies there was a seperate section devoted to books of all kinds. From coloring books to craft books and typical stories. That seemed to run a little smoother than the plushies as she wasn't necessarily replacing an old friend. She ended up picking a book that contained various short stories about different types of animals. They were just about to go look at some other items when the puzzle rack came up again as Renya bit her lips.

"We should get mommy a puzzle....she loves puzzles...or did....daddy took the one away that we had. I don't know what he did with it," suggested the sweet little girl after several minutes or so. Looking down at Pepper in thought wondering if she might feel similar about doing something nice for her mom. She was sad they didn't seem to be all that friendly anymore. Maybe she could try and help mend the friendship.

The worker made no further attempts to convince Reyna to choose a new toy, and Reyna clutched the little red panda to her chest as the woman turned and walked off. A smile tugged at the corner of Pepper's mouth as Reyna whispered reassurance to her new friend. Reyna was a sweet kid. The sort of friend Pepper could have used when she was young. It made her happy to know that Reyna was still kind despite her troubled family life. She wasn't old enough to become the jaded, broken person that Pepper was.

They lingered among the shelves of books for a while, eventually settling on a book of short stories. It reminded Pepper of something she would have read when she was young. Pepper had spent her childhood burying herself in books. Many of them had been stories about animals. Pepper had always harbored a strong fondness for animals. They didn't judge her. They didn't care what kind of work she did, and as a child they hadn't cared how masculine or feminine she was. Her family had had a cat named Peanut for most of her childhood, and she had been Pepper's dearest friend. Often her only source of comfort.

After choosing her book, they headed back in the direction they had come, Pepper slowing to a stop as Reyna spoke up about a puzzle. Her mother liked puzzles, and her father had taken away the one they'd had. "You know what that means?" Pepper asked her. "I think we're gonna have to get two puzzles. In case something happens to the first one. Then you'll have a spare." Pepper grinned up at her. "Why don't you pick a couple out?"

Pepper knew Emily had only asked for a book and a stuffed animal, but it wasn't like Pepper had much at home that could entertain Reyna for long. It wasn't fair to just expect her to amuse herself all the time. She'd get bored eventually. Besides, Pepper did want to spoil her a bit. It was the least she could do after being completely absent for seven years.

The book section was a lot of fun and there were plenty of stories she'd have to come back for at one point. It was nice of Pepper to get her some things while they stayed with her. Maybe she could even leave them with her for when she went back to see Daddy. Not quite understanding that this was a bit more permanent than all that. Far as she knew it was just temporary. And hopefully, she'd get to see Sammie again with any luck. Still a bit sad that she didn't have him to cuddle up with. But this new red panda was very cute and fluffy. So it wasn't too bad and she got a new bunch of stories to bed red. For such a short outing, the little girl was already getting a bit sleepy. Her hand reached up to rub her eyes before they passed by the rack of puzzles on display. She did look up when Pepper asked if she knew what that meant. Her head shook once or twice no until Pepper clarified that it meant they could get two puzzles. That was nice...she was sure mommy would like that very much.

She didn't particularly like puzzles herself as she found them too difficult. So maybe she'd give the additional puzzle to her mom. Emily was the puzzle whizz in this family. She much preferred books and plushies to that sort of thing. Her eyes roamed over the shelf noting various types of different difficulties as well. It was just a matter of how many pieces you wanted for yourself or your child. That took a little more time as Reyna didn't really know what sort of puzzles her mommy liked. She furrowed her brow as she tried to think of what the last puzzle had been on. If she remembered it might have been a little village. So maybe she should look for some of those as her eyes lifted once more to the choices they offered. Her tongue poking out of her mouth as she sat around Pepper's shoulders deep in thought. She wanted to make sure Mommy had nice puzzles to work with. She didn't see any village ones that were nice but she did point out two puzzles eventually that were 1000 pieces each.

"Mommy likes puzzles more than I do. So she can have my spare. I don't really get them. I normally play with my blocks or coloring book," commented Reyna softly in thought as she pointed out the two puzzles for her mother.

She hoped they would be okay for her mommy though she'd never actually heard her complain about anything Reyna got her. A small smile on her face as she absently began to play with Pepper's hair. It wasn't perhaps as silky as her mommy's but it still felt nice. Making sure not to drop her new plushie at the same time as she gave Pepper a small hug then continued whatever it was she was doing. A happy sigh escaped her lips contently. She liked spending time with the woman that was her mommy's old friend. Something just felt comfortable to the little girl about them. She did turn when she thought she heard someone call Pepper's name.

Reyna swayed a little on Pepper's shoulders. Pepper had forgotten how fast kids were to tire out. The child commented that her mother liked puzzles more than she did, but she still picked out two anyway. Even if Emily was the only one to get any use out of either of them, Pepper figured her ex could use the distraction. She'd been more stressed in the past twenty four hours than Pepper had seen her throughout the entirety of their relationship. She could do with something to focus on. It would keep her mind of everything that had happened.

Reyna had started playing with her hair, and Pepper reached up to give the girl an affectionate nudge. Reyna seemed to like her, and that made Pepper happy. Pepper often had trouble convincing herself that anybody really liked her beyond simply tolerating her. But Pepper didn't think Reyna was quite old enough to pretend to like her to spare her feelings. If Reyna didn't like her, it wasn't very likely that she would have opted to go out shopping with her. Or to be anywhere near her at all. Kids tended to be more blunt. Adults would be polite to her to her face and then scorn her once her back was turned.

Pepper let her gaze travel around the surrounding aisles. Reyna had mentioned liking blocks. Maybe they could get her some blocks too. Pepper had liked blocks as a kid. It was probably the closest to a masculine hobby she had ever had. She'd spent a lot of time building towers and small fortresses. "Maybe we can get--" Pepper started to say, but she was quickly cut off by someone calling her name from not far off.

Surprised, Pepper turned her head at the sound of her name. Who could be calling her now? Or here, of all places? Maybe she'd heard wrong.

(apologies been dealing with some stuff <3)
********************
It didn't take long for the little girl to already begin to tire out well aware that in a couple of months she'd start school. Which didn't sound all that exciting to Reyna, but she didn't want to fuss too much with her mommy. As it was, she was still getting used to staying awake for long hours though every once in a while she took a small nap. Thankfully, Pepper had her on her shoulders so that was alright with her. It was actually quite comfortable all things considered as she snuggled her new friend. She'd have to see about finding a name for them, but that could be done later. She was feeling pretty happy though all things considered and she'd even managed to make a new friend in Pepper. She seemed much like her mother in a lot of ways which wasn't necessarily a bad thing. The sort of personality that Reyna tended to gravitate towards more often than not. Sure, she had her moments of excitement and high energy, but not nearly as often as some kids.

Probably because the majority of the time, her daddy was always telling her to be quiet. Or mommy but she was a lot nicer about it. She pulled the stuffy a little closer to her mindful not to damage it any further. She definitely didn't want that to happen glad that at least Pepper had picked up the puzzles. She didn't think she could have carried them from her position. Glad at least, that she had managed to find something for her mom. She knew she loved puzzles so it was only fair she get some things for her too. Unable to help herself when she started playing with Pepper's hair. It felt nice in her fingers and gave her something of a distraction. She always tended to do better when she had something to do with herself. Only to giggle a little when Pepper nudged her in affection making her beam even more. Her fingers continued to play leisurely in the woman's hair sometimes braiding it and other times just moving it from one spot to the other.

She felt pretty happy even if she hadn't been allowed to go and get Sammie as she had wanted. She sighed gently as she was just thinking how nice it was to be around someone that didn't mind her talking their ear off. At least, she didn't think that Pepper minded or hoped she didn't in any case. Just content to browse around a little longer. Although, she was also a little worried about her mommy as she hadn't been feeling too good when they had left her. Maybe the puzzles would make her feel better as she sighed contently. Only to perk up when she heard someone calling Pepper's name as well Hearing Pepper say something before she too seemed to have heard the call. Her head already looking up from where it had been not quite resting against Pepper's own. A man was pushing the way through the crowd towards them. Reyna just sat quietly where she was almost feeling better for it as the man came to greet her.

"Didn't think I'd see you in the toy shop? Whose the kid?" asked the gentleman as he glanced her direction. A few packaged toys in his own arms for his kids that he only got visiting rights to. He'd called upon Pepper a few times and was just surprised to see her there of all places. Then noticed the child with her which surprised him as much as seeing her there. He didn't quite peg her for someone that enjoyed the company of kids.

Reyna stayed quiet though she didn't particularly seem comfortable, but behaved nonetheless. Her hands-on the red panda once more as she ever so slightly flinched when he referred to her as 'kid'. Something she never really liked especially when her daddy would say that. She had a name. She could feel the man's gaze on her as she dropped her own though she was a little put off already. Did Pepper know this person? Well, she didn't really like him and would have much preferred if he went away right now. Yet, she didn't say anything because that was rude and mommy didn't like her doing it. Even still, it was clear she wasn't thrilled even as the man flashed her a smile. His hand reached out to introduce himself to Pepper but she moved from his touch.

Pepper stiffened as she caught sight of the man coming towards her. She recognized his face almost immediately. It was always uncomfortable to see a client during the day. It was an unspoken rule that outside of her work, she didn't know them and they didn't know her, but apparently that had slipped this man's mind. Pepper set the puzzles down on a shelf for a moment, feeling Reyna flinch slightly as the man approached. Pepper reached up and gently lifted Reyna up off her shoulders and set her back down on the ground again, taking a small step in front of the girl. She doubted the man would do anything to her, but still. It was better to be careful, and Reyna seemed a touch uncomfortable.

"Hello," Pepper greeted, somewhat stiffly, instinctively taking a small step back as the man reached out to her. "She's...a friend's daughter," Pepper answered, pausing for a moment to choose her words carefully. "I'm treating her to a day out, that's all." She glanced down at Reyna, who still seemed less than thrilled by the sudden appearance of a stranger. Pepper's gaze travelled over the nearby aisles and she looked back to the child again before speaking. "I think I saw blocks over there," Pepper said, motioning to a nearby aisle. "Why don't you go and pick some out? I'll be here."

She wouldn't normally try to send Reyna off on her own, even for the short distance, but Reyna was clearly uncomfortable, even if she wasn't voicing it, and Pepper couldn't exactly flee the situation. He hadn't done anything to her of course, but just as she kept her guard up during the nights she worked, she kept it up now. Pepper's very existence often felt like a dangerous one, and now even more so with Reyna ducking behind her.

(sorry its so short i'm running on depression energy oops)

Reyna didn't like this one bit, but she was far too polite to voice her concerns about the situation. If her mommy had been there, she might have gently pulled on her pant leg. However, she didn't really know Pepper and even if she was really nice might not really like that. The man seemed friendly enough...too friendly for Reyna's comfort levels though. The smile didn't seem to help as it only seemed to make him a little scarier. Her hands clutched the panda a little tighter in her hands now. Only for Pepper to put the puzzles down now before she was suddenly being lifted off her shoulders. Reyna wanted to object as she felt much safer, but she didn't resist either. Being so little, it was easy for the man to tower over her which didn't help matters by the slightest. She was much quieter now than she had been before...more subdued. While her father had never physically hurt her, there were other ways to traumatize a little girl.

Grateful when she felt Pepper stand in front her to try and put some distance between them. Something mommy would have done if she'd been here as she wished she was back on Pepper's shoulders. Her nerves becoming much more apparent as the man seemed to pick up on it. Despite trying to be as friendly as he could with the little girl. Not for the first time wishing she was back on Pepper's shoulders, but that didn't seem to be happening any time soon. Just as well, she was happy to have Pepper in front of her as she looked at the older man. Just as Pepper greeted the man though she didn't seem particularly comfortable either. Did he yell too like Daddy? Should she say something? Reyna didn't really know what to do as she nodded nervously when Pepper mentioned she was a friend's daughter. That seemed to have gotten the man's attention as he moved to bend down and try and get a better look at Reyna.

"You don't say? She's quite the lovely little lady. I got two boys myself....are you gonna be a little princess?" asked the man trying to be polite.

His eyes more focused on the little girl which didn't make Reyna all that thrilled. Friendly or not, she didn't like this man and he was way too tall and scary for her liking. She bit her lip uneasily as Pepper talked to the man that had come over to them. Only to have her attention taken away when Pepper mentioned that she thought she saw some blocks down the nearest aisle. Suggesting that she go and pick up some that she might like to have at the house. She looked to where the blocks were and then back up at Pepper several times. Much as she wanted some blocks, she was too nervous to go off on her own. For once she actually shook her head just as the man looked down the aisle too.

"Go on lass...there's loads of blocks that way...pick up two sets...any friend of Pepper's a friend of mine," replied the man as he slowly stood himself back up again. Renya ducked quickly behind Pepper almost instinctively then as she shook her head much more prominently then. Much as she wanted blocks...she really didn't want to leave Pepper's side. Not even for the chance at new toys especially in this crowded toy store. What if Pepper left her behind? What if she got lost? No, mommy always told her to stay close and she really didn't want to go explore right now. Keeping directly behind her to avoid looking at either adult at the moment right now.

"Shy thing eh?" asked the man as he scratched his head surprised by the youngster's refusal to leave Pepper's side.

Reyna didn't leave Pepper's side despite her coaxing, and the man continued chattering to her despite Reyna's clear discomfort. Pepper lifted her chin as the man offered to buy Reyna an extra set of blocks, leaning down to scoop Reyna up off the ground and put her back on her shoulders. Reyna had been cowering behind her for the entirety of her time on the ground, and if she wasn't going to go look for blocks, perhaps she'd be safer with Pepper holding onto her. "I can pay for her blocks myself," Pepper told him. "Save your money for the evenings, all right?"

Pepper nodded as he mentioned Reyna being shy. "Yeah," was all she said, becoming irritated that he seemed unable to take the hint that neither she nor Reyna were much interested in talking to him. Pepper reached over to pick the puzzles up off the shelf where she had set them down one moments before. "We should probably be going," Pepper told him, her gaze flicking up towards Reyna. "She's probably getting tired. But I'll see you around, all right?"

Pepper took another step back, forcing a small smile to the man before turning to head towards the register. Pepper quickened her pace, reaching the register and letting the cashier scan the items. "Sorry about that, pipsqueak," she apologized, looking up towards Reyna. "People from my work aren't supposed to be bothering during the day. I'm sorry if he scared you. We can come back for blocks some other time, okay?"

Reyna didn't so much as budge from behind Pepper's legs too afraid to be on her own right now. The man hadn't done anything to her, but he still managed to make her uncomfortable. Only for Pepper to reach out to her at first nervous until she gently lifted her up and returned her to her shoulders. That felt better as she found herself playing with Pepper's hair once more. It seemed to distract the young girl, though she was still clearly keeping an eye on the man so long as he was with them. She did seem to be more comfortable up there at least though still not that happy about the man there. Just as Pepper told the scary man off about the blocks as the man finally lamented that maybe he just wasn't going to get anywhere with the child. A shame as he loved children and missed being able to spoil his boys as he wanted. Unfortunately, when you got into drugs and the bad crowds one tended to look unfavorably upon you from a court point of view

Reyna just kept her attention on Pepper's hair playing with it at her own leisure glad to be up off the ground again. She paid little attention to them as they talked though she really just wanted to go home and check on mommy. And maybe just be with Pepper a little longer. Something about her just felt safe to the little girl. She liked the woman even though she hadn't talked to her for very long. Just as Pepper picked up the puzzles that she had set down earlier so she could put her on the floor. When she mentioned they should probably get going, Reyna seemed to perk up a little. Insisting that she was probably tired which she was and she'd talk to the man later. Why? She didn't really like the man he came off scary. Why on earth would Pepper want anything to do with him? The man at least nodded his head not before he tried to ruffle Reyna's hair as she quickly ducked out of the way. A lopsided grin on the man's face as he just chuckled at her expense.

"Yeah I better get going as well. You should bring her around some time. She's an absolute darling. Maybe next time you'll even tell me your name hmm?" asked the man clearly not fazed at all by the child's eagerness to get away from him.

Then he turned and left to go about finding something else for his two boys. Reyna was glad to see him go as she felt Pepper turn and head off as well. She seemed to relax a little more at least, once they were away from the man. Though a tiredness had fallen upon her features as she rubbed her eyes tiredly. Watching the lady at the cash register scan their items this time though Reyna managed a small smile as the woman said how cute she was. Only to gently nudge Pepper and hand her the stuffie that had been clutched in her arms this whole time. Given the state of it, the woman even gave them a slight discount after checking one last time to make sure Reyna really wanted it. Just as Pepper tried to apologize for the man they'd bumped into. Her head tilted in surprise when she mentioned he wasn't supposed to bother her. That they'd come back for the blocks another day. Which was fair as she already had a book of stories and a new stuffie.

"I don't ike him....he scarryyy like daddy. Why you friends with him?" asked Reyna who didn't know any different. Her face all scrunched up as she relaxed once more content to fiddle with Pepper's hair again as they got ready to leave. She hoped mommy would feel better now with their little surprises. Maybe she'd even read her a story or help her come up with a name.

Pepper remained rigid even as the man said his goodbyes, suggesting that Pepper bring Reyna around sometime. Absolutely not. The only time Pepper ever saw him was during their nights together, and Pepper would sooner drown herself in the ocean than let Reyna get anywhere near the people she found herself with at night. Especially at night, where Pepper was most often drunk and could barely look after herself, let alone make sure Reyna stayed out of harms way.

"He's not my friend," Pepper told Reyna. "I don't like him much either. I just know him from my work. He isn't supposed to bother me outside of it. If he didn't pay me I'd never talk to him." Pepper took the bag from the cashier and passed the panda plushie back to Reyna. "I'm sorry if he scared you. You'd think he'd figure out how to take a hint." The interaction had been a brief but uncomfortable meddling of the two halves of her life Pepper tried so hard to keep separate. She hoped Reyna wouldn't ask too many more questions about it. It would be hard to explain away their relationship if she had to go into further details.

"Let's get you back to your mother," Pepper told her. "We've been gone a while, she's probably expecting us back by now." Pepper let out a long sigh as they exited the store. What she could really use right now was a cigarette, but even she wouldn't smoke with Reyna right next to her. So she just kept heading back the way they had come, telling herself that she could sit down and smoke later to calm her somewhat rattled nerves.

They stepped back into the apartment building, Pepper ducking through the door to ensure Reyna wouldn't bump her head before heading back up the steps. She gave the apartment door a light knock before opening it to alert Emily to their return and then ducked again to get through the door. "Hey Em," she called, reaching up to lift Reyna off her shoulders and place her on the ground. "We're back."

Reyna remained quiet after Pepper insisted that he wasn't a friend and just someone from work. That made sense she supposed, though she felt bad that Pepper had to deal with that guy. But that she didn't like him either and he wasn't supposed to talk to her. Reyna didn't choose to ask further questions as she still felt tired if not more so now. Glad at least, that they were going home now as she really didn't want to spend any more time here. Happy to cuddle up against her little Panda as she rubbed her eyes again. She gently leaned a little against Pepper mindful not to get in her way as she apologized if the man had scared her again. A small smile on her face though she didn't quite understand Pepper's words. She was just happy to have spent some time with mommy's old friend. She liked Pepper quite a bit as she sighed contently happy to be quiet as they made their way from the store. She missed mommy and just as well wanted to cuddle up against her.

"i like spending time with you though....can we do this again?" murmured the tired little girl with a yawn.

Giving Pepper a gentle hug as they stepped back into the apartment build and then up the few slights of stairs to her apartment. She waited patiently while Pepper got the door and they slowly entered the room. Emily was sitting up taking small mouthfuls of the muffin that Pepper had gotten her earlier. She seemed a little better though it would probably take a day or two for to return to rights. Her head turned when she saw Pepper and Reyna on her shoulders glad to see Reyna had gotten along well enough with Pepper. She'd been worried that she was asking too much of her former lover, but the rest had definitely helped. At least, a little as she swallowed another mouthful of muffin and wiped her mouth.

"Hey sweetheart.....I hope you were good for Pepper," insisted Emily as she turned to her daughter.

"Mommy!" replied the little girl as she wiggled free of Pepper's hands once she had scooped her up and set her down.

"Reyna!" laughed Emily softly as she wrapped her daughter up into her arms and kissed her.

She winced a little as she was still bruised in several places and hurting something fierce, but she didn't care right now. Her arms holding her daughter tight as she silently thanked Pepper for taking her. As she kissed the top of her daughter's head just glad to see her in good spirits. Just as Reyna insisted she was the 'bestest behaved child ever' which made Emily laugh a little. Her fingers carded through her daughter's raven hair as she sighed in contentment as she looked back at her former lover.

"And I see you got some things...did you thank Pepper?" asked Emily raising an eyebrow at her daughter. An amused look upon her face when Reyna quickly turned and went to hug Pepper again. Thanking her profusely for the new book and stuffie. The stuffie still clutched in her arms just like she did so often with Sammie. She truly felt bad that she didn't think to take Sammie...but she'd just had no choice. She just couldn't risk her ex coming and finding her packing everything up to leave him.
