We could say he got separated from the group during the last chapter you remember and he can either find the air Base or run into one of the mini groups that are out in the world.

Maybe he got separated from the group long ago, was picked up by wild men. Rescued by the air force base people but was so weak and hurt he was in a coma in the infirmary until now.
