Ploegy Ploegy I just noticed your pfp is aqua XD
It indeed is Aqua lol me continuing to be unable to keep the same pfp for too long per usual
I actually giggled at this just because of the simple mental image of Byleth gazing into Layton's beady black dot eyes! XD

I'm always impressed how the game developers can make a guy with dot eyes look intense and badass, even when standing next to a more "realistically" designed character.

A very serious Byleth just staring into some lil dot eyes. Truly an iconic mental image lol

In Unwound/Lost Future, an NPC is terrified of Layton, and Luke tells him to look into the Professor's eyes, asking if they look like the eyes of a bad man. The NPC responds that he only sees beady little eyes and can't read them lol

Layton's stare can be hilariously creepy too!

The best part? That music is actually in that scene, so it wasn't edited! That was from Professor Layton and the Eternal Diva, which is a movie. One of, if not the first video game-based movies made that doesn't suck! Layton had a good movie before Sonic and Mario! I recommend it if you enjoy Ghibli films. Knowledge of the games is not needed to enjoy it, and it doesn't spoil the games.

I just finished Unwound/Lost Future, and yep, I think the ending broke the heart of one of my viewers. The ending reminded me of something I actually forgot about in the game's story, and may possibly change the way I think Layton might view Joker. In the game, the main villain was a young man who lost his parents and wanted revenge on the scientists and politicians responsible for it. He tries to destroy all of London and killed many innocent people, calling it justice. As such, Joker might possibly remind Layton of that character should they ever meet and he learns of what Joker does in his own world. I think Layton would quickly realize there are other worlds and that Joker's world works differently from his own, but I think that such an event would change their dynamic from what I hypothesized before. Despite everything, Layton still believed the young man had good in him somewhere, so I think he'd be concerned about Joker one day losing his way and going down a dark path as well.

I think in that case Ann would probably tell him he has nothing to worry about. Joker could have very well strayed from his path but he didn’t given his strong desire to help others and his bond with others. He’s also seen what abusing his powers is like thanks to his “rival” of sorts. This other user uses their persona to cause mental shutdowns and ultimately kill people via the metaverse which Joker is rather appalled by. And this rival does it all in the name of revenge against their father. While Joker does empathize with the struggles that led them to take the path they chose he is very firm in his own path of sparing his targets and making sure they admit to the crimes they have committed. He does understand his path goes against many things and he is in a way manipulating these criminals into changes of heart, but he sees no other path forward. With the system so broken and full of its own manipulation, he had to stick to what he was given. Ann of all people would understand that. She is part of the reason Joker took this path after all. His desire to save her from the harassment she was being put through was a factor in him committing to using his persona powers. So she’d be quite keen on assuring that Joker wouldn’t stray from his path. Besides, their whole goal at the end was to destroy the metaverse so it couldn’t be used like it was, meaning they’d be giving up their personas as well, which they were fully okay with.

Joker has several opportunities to not let that happen actually and the player can accept certain deals in the game that actually allow him and the others to keep their powers and keep the metaverse in tact, all while gaining fame because of their roles as thieves. Of course these are considered the bad endings but they do exist and briefly explore Joker being rather selfish in his decisions.

But our Joker here of course didn’t do that. He found his way to the true ending and erasing the metaverse, or so he thought because the little sequel does bring it back in a new form (which the beginning of that is where I place our Joker in terms of timeline). He’s rusty with his persona because he hasn’t used one in about 6-7 months. But he still is more than ready to jump head first into things again and find the source of the reappearance again (although that has been put on hold of course because he remembered his promise to the other Smash Brothers).

All in all, Joker himself probably wouldn’t try and prove to Layton he has no need to worry. He’d let his actions speak for themselves. Ann would be more of the one that would speak highly of him and try to convince Layton that Joker won’t stray god I am sorry for me rambling on this like the lil P5 nerd I am LMAO

It's all good! Who doesn't like geeking out about their favorite characters?

As I said, Layton stated that he saw good in the villain despite the horrible things he did, so I'm sure he will immediately sense that Joker is a good person. He's suffered a lot of tragedy, but much like Uncle Iroh from Avatar: the Last Airbender, he chose to become kind and gentle instead of bitter. He's seen the catastrophic results of people going so far for justice and revenge that they become the very monster they claim to be fighting against. I think Layton would be wise enough to understand that other worlds work differently and as such he may not get the full context of the situation involving other characters, and would find it unjust to judge and condemn others because of it. Honestly, I think Joker and Layton talking about such things can be somewhat heartwarming in a sense. Layton would be speaking out of genuine kindness and concern for Joker, and I'm sure Joker would be horrified if Layton tells him the story of that young man and what he did. Sometimes it's good to be reminded of what can happen if someone goes too far in the name of "justice." It keeps one's priorities in order!

I like the idea of Layton going into gentle dad mode around Joker. He'd likely also tell Ann that she's very good for Joker, and that he's very lucky to have her looking out for him! 😊

Lol I pictured some of the good-aligned fighters getting annoyed with Layton's quirks such as his tendency to get distracted by things that fascinate him, as well as bringing up puzzles in inappropriate or inconvenient times, but they feel they can't be harsh to him, or they feel guilt after scolding him, because it's like chewing out a sweet father or grandfather XD

Every time I nerd out like this I get the strong urge to replay P5 instead of playing any of my unplayed games LMAO must resist the urge since Xenoblade DLC is in a couple days and I need to no life that

I can very much see a conversation between Layton being quite heartwarming as well. Joker explaining why he does what he does and possibly even opening up about his struggles because Layton sees the good in him would be a very touching moment. I feel he could be one that Joker might talk about the whole interrogation room stuff too. Him talking about all the abuse and struggle he had to put up with in that like day or two alone shows a lot of his character after all and I feel someone as kind and gentle as Layton could be a good person for him to open up to. Would even be a bit amusing if he is the first one (aside from his team and a few people from his world ofc) to hear about it. Like I can picture Joker's close allies overhearing him talking about it and just staring in shock and disbelief like "why didn't you tell us you were carrying that kind of pain"

But also Layton praising Ann for being good for Joker is so cute! She'd be very proud of it and probably be like "See Ren, I told you I'd be someone you could heavily rely on!" and poor Joker is just looking away, embarrassed

In Unwound/Lost Future, after the lab experiment that killed his girlfriend, a grieving Layton saw that there was no media coverage on the incident, and started his own investigation to piece together what happened. Someone with power sent death threats to Layton, and he was eventually beaten into a month-long coma by thugs, and had his research stolen. In a way, he can definitely relate to Joker.

It’s later revealed that one of the scientists made a secret deal to sell the technology for huge sums of money, and used Layton’s girlfriend as a guinea pig to prove the tech was worth the investment, despite the other scientists warning him that it wasn’t ready and it was too dangerous to use human test subjects. That man eventually became Prime Minister.

It’s very telling of Layton’s character that, at the end of the game, he was willing to risk his life to save the man who caused him so much pain and grief. If he harbored any anger or resentment, he did a very good job of hiding it. It just shows how pure-hearted and forgiving Layton is. I think he and Sora would have some very cute interactions too!

Oddly Joker is somewhat similar in willing to save his rival who brought him so much grief, though unfortunately for him he cannot save them, but they actually in turn end up protecting Joker and the other thieves. Also an odd similarity is Joker's rival's father is the one who originally got Joker deemed a criminal and he too is supposed to be Prime Minister. So I guess both Layton and Joker gotta deal with crummy Prime Ministers

Sora would definitely have some cute interactions for sure! Pure hearted gentlemen adopts pure hearted keyblade boy

I’m still chuckling at the thought Roxas would be the first to confuse Seph not that it’d change much but it’s a feat.

Samus is the mom, Layton is the dad. The Little Brothers ask Samus if they could do something, she says no, so they go to Layton to ask him lol I can see the Professor having fun puzzle battles with Zelda, the Links, and Palutena. I wouldn't be surprised if Layton could wield a keyblade! He'd likely be one of the fighters who is very resilient to the influence of the Pillars of Destruction because of his incredible control over his emotions, and because he's already made peace with his demons.

I think Byleth and Layton have already sensed that they're kindred spirits in the RP. I was thinking about how funny an outfit swap between them would be!

Luke has the ability to talk to animals, and I like to think that extends to Pokemon, as well as creatures like Pikmin and Kirby. I think he'd be awed by Sora. He gives the kid a puzzle, and Sora just as a "no thoughts, head empty" look on his face.

I think it's an absolute shame that the Prof. Layton games have no references in Super Smash Bros. at all, especially since they are pretty popular games, and they're Nintendo console exclusives outside of a few mobile spin-off games and remakes. No trophies, or stickers, or spirits, or even Mii costumes!

Maybe I'll try and draw a swap between them though thinking of drawing Byleth's outfit pains me

Sora gets a puzzle and he's one of these two moods

It's this puzzle, the very first puzzle in the very first game of the series! XD

I'd like to think Sora is smarter than that, though!

What's neat about streaming the Prof. Layton games is that my viewers and I are good at different puzzles. I'm very good at puzzles that involve spotting tiny or hidden details and patterns, while another viewer is great at number puzzles, a third viewer is better at puzzles that require visualizing 3D objects, and so on.

I do think Sora isn't all the dumb tbh. Like does he struggle with things? Yes, but he also has a lot in that head of his. Sure he may not be smart and he is definitely dense af a lot, but he is out there doing his best after being thrown into it all. I think given a bit of time and encouragement, he can figure things out, but sadly more times than not he doesn't get either of those things. Of course he wouldn't be solving complex things even with time, but simpler things that may initially go over his head become easier for him. It isn't like he's gonna be on par with someone like Joker or something then again maybe Joker doesn't have a single thought n his head

If you want a good example of how dumbed down Pit is in the English dub of Uprising, check out the Japanese version of the chapter where he's in Hades's belly. In the English dub, Pit fails in his rallying cry because he forgot the words, stumbles over himself when Hades debates him on the morality of eating souls, and when Hades asks him questions he just quotes Palutena. In the Japanese version, he stops doing his rallying cry out of spite towards Hades, gives firm answers when Hades asks him questions, and holds his own during the debate about devouring souls. He picks up on Hades's belly being a separate dimension pretty quickly.

I think Pit and Dark Pit would do fine with puzzles, especially ones such as this:

PL3PB2B.gif

I can see them being decent with strategic games like chess and checkers, or Risk. I can really picture the Pits having checkers/chess/Risk game nights with each other or the Fire Emblem fighters. Pit and Marth playing chess with each other sounds cute to me!

I see Sora as one who might enjoy card games like Go Fish and Old Maid. I think it's the same with most of the child fighters.

Games of Uno usually end in violence lol

I dunno if Sora would be a board/card game kind of person tbh. Maybe he'd have fun with it, but I feel like he rather be up and moving/playing games that involve that. Even when they show young Sora in the games he is always running around and all that so I don't think much has changed there

Sure, he’s an energetic kid, but I can’t see him saying no to playing card or board games especially when a lot of the kid fighters are also playing!

I can see him trying to make a poker face while playing a kids card game like Go Fish and it results in a comedically exaggerated serious face lol

He'd play if asked for sure, I was saying I see him more as the type who would prefer to be playing more active games. Basically, he wouldn't be the one to initiate such a thing, but he'd play if it made others happy

All this talk about video game characters and board games without even mentioning the best video game board game of all time smh/j

Oh my god noooooooo! Anything but that game LMAO

Oh, yeah. I don't think he'd initiate such games either, but I can see him taking part and enjoying them. He'd have a more enjoyable time playing kids card games and board games compared to games like Risk.

Roxas watches as Zelda and Dark Pit have a very intense game of Risk! They're quiet, but Roxas can just sense the tension as the two place their troops, attack and defend territories, and try to wipe out the other player's army. I wouldn't put it past the two of them to make some kind of wager before playing, such as Dark Pit going with Zelda to the Deedly Dee's concert if he loses.

I didn't even know that existed.

While other fighters are playing more Western card/board games, Joker tries convincing some of them to play either shogi or tycoon with him

Inkling plays Shogi with Joker and then she gets to teach him how to play TableTurf!

Joker finds TableTurf very confusing because of how many cards there are and how many different things they do, but he does his best because she bothered to play stuff with him
