Realistic or Modern Suitors at the Abbey

"I believe it's roast chicken." Lady Montgomery answered as she took her seat at the table and the servants began to go about serving the family and guests.

"I'm perfectly capable." Diana only smiled to herself, slipping into her usual spot at the table before James had an opportunity to catch up.

Ryan looked at the servants and said thank you. He put the napkin on his lap then remained silent.

George looked at the suitors, "How was the journey?" The man placed the napkin on his lap and looked at James as if he was to answer first, "I noticed a nice car at the corner of my eye Sir Woodhouse". This was his attempt to forget about Kayla's lateness.

"Prr...Looks like there is an icy front coming from lady Diana's direction."He said openly in a joking tone amused slightly by the display. He made a shivering motion before thanking the serving staff for the food."Good thing some things stay the same."

Margaret sensed the disapproval in Lord Ashford's voice, though she decided to drop the subject until later in the evening. It was not her obligation to convince someone of her cause. She bit her pink lip softly when her eldest sister, Diana, refused the help of a suitor, knowing her stance on the entire ordeal. Only time would tell how long they would all last before going positively mad at these arrangements. Hearing Richard comment on Diana's coldness openly, she raised an eyebrow and glanced at him for a moment, though she said nothing in response. Across the table, Margaret glanced at her sister, trying to hide her amusement at passiveness of her tone, as dinner was just being served.

"I suppose the roast chicken will be divine as always." Margaret commented lightly, making light dinner conversation, as she opened her napkin and spread it carefully on her lap.

Noting Diana's frosty refusal, James bowed his head. "Forgive me if I suggested you were not!"

In response to Mr. Montgomery's inquiries, James cheerfully responded as he seated himself (with an aside of "Ah, roast chicken! Such divinity!"), "The journey was quite nice really. I was so fortunate in that the weather was so pleasant! It would have been a miserably long journey otherwise, my legs all cramped and stuck in one spot all those hours! But, it's wrong of me to complain. The car is, as you implied Lord Montgomery, mine. Forgive me for showing off, they do say a man should let others do his bragging for him."

Kayla mumbled to herself "Yes." Then politely said "Roast chicken, what a fine choice im glad that we have this many people here to share it with." She smiled and looked around the room, when she got to Diana she gave her a look of plied, as if to say why are they here and can we do something to make them go away?

"It is in a human's nature to complain; however, it is in a lady's and gentleman's nature to keep complaints to one's self. No worries James, I will let it slide because you have sacrificed for quite a while being in a nice car and all. At least you are aware of your mistake and your car is pleasing to people's eyes" George smiled. He thought James as well-mannered and respectful man. His gaze shifted to Richard, "You Sir Richard if I am not mistaken, were the first person to arrive. Yes? How was your travel?" The man glanced at the suitor's cane. He knew Richard was especially strong for not having backed down from any obstacle in front of him.

"Well, my lord, you sort of limited my range of responses to that question with the talk of complaining."Richard quipped trying to mask the truth of the words with his sense of humor, he was never one to reveal let alone his troubles with traveling. He intentionally taking a bite to eat so he had a moment to choose his words." The trip was pleasant enough in all honestly thanks of the scenery between here and Woburn Abbey...Sorry i am wrong, this chicken in itself could make the trip worth it."

George smiled, "It's nice to hear that, and how were you feeling on your way here?" He continued to slice his chicken into pieces. Lord Montgomery had the habit of slicing all his food before eating it. It was a slightly unique habit.

Ryan heard the voices, but did not listen to the discussion. His thoughts were still focused on the past. The suitor blinked a couple of times then continued eating.

"I would be lying if i said i didn't feel abit nervous of what the trip may bring but that should be expected considering the circumstances."He replied sensing an inquisition behind George's question. "However but fairly relaxed overall."

"Hm. Okay" George was just beginning his "digging". He looked at Rayver whose eyes were locked onto his chicken, "How was your trip Rayver?" The suitor looked at Lord Montgomery, "...It was fine. I apologize for my tardiness earlier. My friend Lucario and I were driving on the way here; however, the car became over-heated and we had to pull over. I was able to bring some water back to the car as well as borrow a horse from a friend. That's why I arrived with a horse". George tilted his head, "Ah I see". He paused then continued, "Borrowed? You plan on returning it any time soon?" Ryan set his utensils down, "Yes. He did say that I could keep it though". "Why don't you keep it?" Lord Montgomery questioned as he took a bite. The suitor picked up his fork then poked a piece of chicken, "In some way...he has worked really hard in order to obtain that horse; therefore, I will not keep it. Rather, I will return it to him and give him another one". Ryan bit the slice of chicken as George analyzed the information in his head, "Ah...so he is eh" He carefully chose his words to try and not insult Ryan's past class. Rayver lifted one of his eyebrows. "-has animals. He owns an animal company" George said studying Ryan's expression. Ryan smiled a little and nodded his head.

George felt a sense of relief then looked back at Richard, "How are the Duke and Duchess?"

"They send their regards and their appreciation your note of sympathy for my brother."He paused for a moment before continuing, hiding a quick somber moment behind his eating.? Which reminds me, father won't forgive me if i didn't ask the time for a rematch of your last card game. Never seen my father taken down a peck so masterfully. I aim to take advantage of this trip and learn your card playing secrets."

George laughed, "There are no secrets to winning at cards Richard. It is all in the genes". He smiled taking his last bite then setting his fork down. Ryan had finished his food as well, setting his fork down then glancing at the clock. At the moment, he desired rest after riding all over the place with a horse and saying various commands in Portuguese. George looked around the table. He had plenty to discuss with his wife later regarding their daughters and the suitors. Just from the suitors' responses has he acquired a handful of personality traits about them though he knew that there was still much to learn.

Diana noticed Kayla's gaze, but could only offer a brief look of sympathy in return before turning her attention back to her plate. She listened silently as her father questioned each of the suitors, almost as if they were being placed under some sort of test. Eventually, she began to tune out the conversation, lost in her own thoughts of nothing ranking of any particular importance. Upon floating back into reality, Diana gently placed her napkin next to her plate and she stood.

"Please do excuse my interruption. I'd forgotten until now that I was to pass a message on to the kitchen staff." She put enough of a smile into the explanation for her exit that it was fairly believable, though she could have made it more convincing if her mind had been in it. Quietly stepping out of the room before Catherine had the chance to protest, Diana crossed the parlor and the foyer, making as if she were to turn for one of the two sets of servants' stairs.

James Woodhouse

James, who had been listening to Lord Montgomery grill the other men, was distracted by Diana's leaving. He watched her go, quite aware, as was most of the room probably, that she was lying. He would not push it - he doubted approaching her would be of any articular use. Nor would she appreciate it. Still, he did find it rather distasteful behavior. He understood not wanting to be there, but she could have at least finished dinner.

Given the silence that followed her departure, he decided to fill it. "Lord Montgomery, I must inquire as to your household rules! I would hate to commit some grave error during my stay due to my own silly ignorance. And might I also add compliments for the chicken, it is exquisite!"

George responded, "One, do not speak back to me and the Lady. Two, do not make too much noise...it's fine, but not too much. Three, do not hurt eachother physically, mentally, and emotionally. Four, do not leave the lot without my permission..as in go to another town and whatnot. Five, DO NOT attempt or actually perform the creative process". He turned to his wife, "Am I missing anything?"
