I personally think everything would go smother if you're a part of the gang, versus waiting a while.

Indeed. For some characters, Doc Goodwin for example, it makes sense for him to have been a Vigilante for years. With others, they could be brand new or still relatively green. It's all what you think works best, or what you'd rather write.
